Man charged in fatal assault at airport BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@fedwaymirror.com

A Federal Way man is facing first-degree manslaughter charges after he allegedly slapped a Korean Airline manager, who died when he hit his head on concrete from the blow on July 6. Taumailelei Mapusua Jr., 27, is being held on $1 million bail because he is considered a flight risk due to having family in Nevada and Samoa. “This was a selfadmitted, unprovoked assault on a coworker that resulted in death,” a prosecuting attorney said in the charging documents. Victim Jason Keum and Mapusua got into an altercation at SeaTac Airport on July 5. The two apparently disagreed about which piece of equipment to use to stabilize a cargo plane. Keum was the manager of Korean Airline and the suspect is a cargo handler employed by Integrated Airplane Services, the company Korean Airline uses to load and unload large body cargo airplanes. Post-Miranda, Mapusua told police he slapped Keum on the side of the face, which caused him to fall backwards and hit his head on reinforced concrete tarmac, a material used for surfacing roads. Keum lost consciousness and experienced a [ more ASSAULT page 3 ]

Judges rule Fred Meyer crosswalk legal school zone BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@federalwaymirror.com

F

ederal Way Municipal Court judges recently ruled that, yes, drivers of Federal Way can get a speeding ticket from traffic cameras at the Saghalie Middle School crosswalk by Fred

Meyer. Unlike a ruling last August that allowed Federal Way resident Stephen Cramer to argue his way out of a $210 speeding ticket, judges David A. Larson and Rebecca C. Robertson corrected the misconceived notion that “the crosswalk near Saghalie Middle School is not a school zone” in an official

report on June 27. In April, seven defendants challenged the city of Federal Way on speeding tickets they acquired at the crosswalk located at 21st Avenue Southwest between Southwest 338th Place and Southwest 339th Street. [ more CROSSWALK page 25]

Residents appeal High Point project Hearing tentatively set for July 28 BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@federalwaymirror.com

Federal Way residents, city officials and a developer are gearing up to argue two appeals on the highly controversial Hight Point mixed-use apartment complex proposed for the former bus barn site. Tentatively scheduled for July 28, the city’s Hearing Examiner will hear arguments on both sides of the appeals. Federal Way resident Leah Boehm-Brady filed an appeal on May 1 of the city’s environmental threshold determination and an appeal on June 19 on the land-use decision for the High Point project. Both appeals were signed by more than 50 in support. Boehm-Brady’s home is in the neighborhood that abuts the north side of the 9.8 acre property, located at 1066 S. 320th St. in Federal Way, across from Safeway. “I’ve lived here three years,” Boehm-Brady said in an interview. “I moved into this quiet neighborhood because I loved it — the kids can play with their bikes, people watch out for each other. It’s a special little place and that’s being threatened now.” The project includes 308 apartment units and 26,095 square feet of commercial and amenity space on the ground floor. The proposal calls for 15 buildings and a parking lot that provides 1.5 stalls per apartment unit. Allowed under current city zoning, the apartment buildings will [ more PROJECT page 17]
