‘Queen’ bids adieu, legacy lingers By Scott Rasmussen Journal editor

Whether the new design for the Spring Street Landing building lands back on the drawing board remains to be seen, but the Town Council agrees it’s worth a shot. Bowing to lingering concerns over the building’s height, as proposed, and pitch of its roof and the waterfront views impacted by it, the council agreed without dissent at a June 26 public hearing to send the project back to the Port of Friday Harbor with a request to consider whether the roofline might be lowered. Specifically, the council asked the port and its architect, BC&J Architecture of Bainbridge Island, to consider whether the pitch of the roof can be lowered from 10/12 to 8/12, in architect parlance, thereby lowering the overall height of the roof. Not everyone on the council believes that a redesign is favorable, or necessary. Councilman Neal Monin said after first impressions of the roof ’s pitch faded, that it was “steep and up there,” he noted it appears striking similar to that of the nearby Doctor’s Office. “Aesthetically, it’s very unique and pleasing,” Monin said of the design. “Overall, it’s a nice look, a nice design.” The Port of Friday Harbor Commission is expected to consider the town’s request See PITCH, Page 5

County crews begin a labor intensive cleanup after more than 60 auto tires were dumped on the waterfront of a westside land preserve in midMarch.

Accused of dumping at least 60 automobile tires on the shoreline of the Land Bank’s Westside Preserve, a San Juan Island man has about three more weeks to cover the cleanup costs and the expense of disposing of the discarded debris, some of which ended up in the water, or face additional fines or possible criminal prosecution. She took along with her an untold number of memories and myriad reflections of 60 years of maritime expeditions when the venerable Evergreen State set sail out of Friday Harbor, bound for Anacortes, for the very last time. A host of ferry lovers, history buffs and local dignitaries made their way to the waterfront, assembling around the ferry terminal, to see her go. Sunday, July 29, marked the final sailing of the oldest boat in Washington State Ferries’ fleet, and state and local officials memorialized the event with photos, gifts and speeches onboard her deck. Known by many as the “Queen of the Northern Fleet,” the Evergreen State cruised out of Friday Harbor for the very last time escorted by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and with San Juan Island Fire Department’s Fireboat Confidence in the lead, casting aloft a steady stream of water at the head of the procession. Bill and Schevaun Massey of Anacortes, accompanied by friend Jan Conklin, boarded the boat in Anacortes and made the roundtrip back home to be part of the 2:15 p.m. sailing

The first, for the alleged dumping of the tires in mid-March, calls for reimbursing San Juan County a total of $4,700 for the cleanup costs and paying a fine of $1,000 by July 20, or to have made See FINES, Page 4
