Sustainable Tacoma 5 locals join commission
By Todd Matthews, Editor Five local residents have been formally appointed or re-appointed to the City of Tacoma's Sustainable Tacoma Commission. In April, the City of Tacoma put a call out for candidates to apply to fill vacancies on the commission. Last month, Tacoma City Council's Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee interviewed eight candidates to fill the positions: Stephanie E. Brock (Council District 1); Ken Campbell (Council District 1); Sarah Chessman (Council District 5); Christine Cooley (Council District 2 — seeking re-appointment); Felicity Devlin (Council District 1); Todd Hay (Council District 1); Eileen Moore (Council District 2 — seeking re-appointment); and Caitlin White (Council District 4). On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council approved a resolution to re-appoint Cooley and Moore to each serve three-year terms to expire on April 30, 2017; appoint Chessman to serve a threeyear term to expire on April 30, 2017; appoint Devlin to serve an unexpired term to expire on April 30, 2016; and appoint Campbell to serve an unexpired term to expire on April 30, 2015. "We had a slate of really, really impressive candidates and had a really difficult job winnowing down the field," said Tacoma City Councilmember Ryan Mello, who also chairs the Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee. "We conducted interviews, had good discussion, and — at the end of the day — we're very proud to forward these five citizens who are committed to this work, come with a good diversity of background and experience, and — we believe — will add a lot of value to the work of the Sustainable Tacoma Commission. We're looking forward to them hitting the ground running and getting to work for us." The 11-member Sustainable Tacoma Commission was created five years ago and consists of stakeholders from environmental, small business, labor, housing, industry, port, transportation, education, building industry, and residential communities. "The [commission] does really important work to work with our Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability — and all departments — to make sure that we are implementing our climate action plan, saving money, and making our city healthier and more resilient," added Councilmember Mello.

Community unveils signage for renamed Tacoma park Posted online Tues., June 17 Photo Courtesy Metro Parks Tacoma / Greater Metro Parks Foundation Metro Parks Tacoma officials, Tacoma City Councilmembers, and Tacoma residents gathered Monday on the city's east side to unveil new signage for a park recently renamed to honor a Tacoma couple instrumental in youth sports in Tacoma. A public process to rename McKinley Playfield began last year when officials responded to reports of confusion among some residents over two public parks located so close to each other — McKinley Park, located at 907 Upper Park St., and McKinley Playfield, located at 4321 McKinley Ave. In April, Metro Parks Tacoma Board of Park Commissioners voted unanimously to rename the site "Verlo Playfield" in honor of Ben and Reba Verlo. The Verlos coached youth sports, advocated for the development of the former Boys and Girls Club on Tacoma's east side, and often provided a home for kids who didn't have a place to stay. Park visitors learned more about Verlo Playfield and gathered to be part of a community photo during a dedication ceremony Monday at noon. More information is available online at metroparkstacoma.org/verlo-playfield.
