Google, police address online safety for everyone SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

The Internet can be a useful tool to help students research for a homework assignment or project. But with summer just a few short weeks away, the need to do online research

goes down and the penchant to surf the web goes up. In an effort to ensure students use the Internet safely and appropriately while school is out, Evergreen Middle School (EMS) held an assembly Monday afternoon on how to do this. “This is a strong reminder

to students before leaving for summer vacation about online safety,” said EMS principal Sean Cassidy. “We want our students to be well-informed and make positive choices while having fun with online media, social networking and technological opportunities that are

available to them.”

RESOURCES FOR EVERYONE

The assembly, dubbed the “Online Safety Roadshow,” was presented by Google and featured information, tips and advice for students, though they could be applied to Internet users of all ages,

said Google spokesperson Jamie Hill. She said Google has an online safety center (www. google.com/safetycenter) with many resources for teachers and parents, but they didn’t have a way to relate to students and young people. Through this need

came the “Online Safety Roadshow,” which launched in September 2013 and has been presented in 25-30 states nationwide, Hill said. “We’ve had a great response so far,” she said. The interactive assembly gives students a chance to [ more SAFETY page 9 ]

RELAY FOR LIFE

From left, former City of Redmond parks and recreation director John Couch has a laugh while walking through the Redmond High School halls with Class of 1975 graduates Mickey Anderson and Terri Fletcher on May 29 at the school’s 50th anniversary gathering. Fletcher beat out Anderson for junior class president in 1974 and the two joked about the election. See page 2 for story. ANDY NYSTROM, Redmond Reporter STAFF REPORT

At age 67, one of Laurel Macartney’s favorite hobbies is traveling. Whether she’s taking a two-and-a-half-week trip to Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands or a motorcycle ride across the country, the 32year Redmond resident enjoys seeing the world. And she’s not about to let anything stop her — not even cancer. “You can have a life while you’re in treatments,” she said. These are words Macartney lives by as she is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland while taking breaks here and there to go on trips with her husband and family around the country or the world.

cancer in 2005. She had been on a four-week crosscountry motorcycle trip when she said something didn’t feel right. After the diagnosis, she underwent nine months of treatment, which included chemotherapy, radiation and a double mastectomy. She went on medication for five years, but in 2011, doctors discovered that the cancer had become metastatic, meaning it had moved to other parts of her body — her spine, pelvis and liver — and she has been on constant chemotherapy for the past three years. Despite this, Macartney’s travel plans have not changed, though she concedes she has been very lucky in that she has been able to tolerate the treatments well and carry a normal lifestyle. This is not to say the treatments have not affected her at all. “The treatments can [ more RELAY page 8 ]
