Sheriff plans to move city police chief

The Tahoma School Board unanimously approved the schematic design for the new Tahoma High School at its May 27 board meeting. The plan outlines where on the piece of property, located off 272nd near Four Corners in what has become known as the Donut Hole, the school will be located, as well as the location of athletic fields and the floor plan of the school. Initially the district had hoped to jointly develop the city’s Summit Park property in a win-win for both the city and the school district, but the budget for the district’s projects will prohibit development at Summit Park for now, district spokesman Kevin Patterson said. The plans do call for a parking lot to be built on a portion of the Summit Park

Maple Valley Police Chief Michelle Bennett has accepted a reassignment to a different post within the King County Sheriff ’s Office. Bennett has been with the Maple Valley Police MAPLE Department — VALLEY a department that is staffed through a contract between the city and Sheriff ’s Office — most of the last decade. She was named chief in Maple Valley in 2004 when she was a sergeant. After becoming a captain in 2008 she completed her probationary year at the rank with Precinct 3, then resumed the post of chief in Maple Valley in 2009. “There are some retirements

Zaria Jones finished the last leg of the girls 400 meter relay for Kentwood at the track and field state championship meet at Mount Tahoma High School May 29-31. To Ghana and back again Community team led by Real Life Church ‘brings it’ to Ghana ksmith@covingtonreporter.com

T

hey brought it to Ghana, and then they brought it home. The team of community members from Covington and Maple Valley who traveled to Ghana over spring break under the motto “Bringing it to Ghana” gathered at Real Life Church Pastor Steve Murray’s house last month after journeying over 14,000 miles

together. Susie Neds, a senior at Tahoma who went on the trip, said she was most surprised at the spirit of the people she met. “They don’t see their lives as a sad thing,” Neds said. “Their presence was almost more life giving than ours was. I didn’t expect that amount of happiness.” The evening was filled with the telling of “shoe moments” — a term the team adopted after Davis shared about a moment
