Gov. Inslee: City, Port earn smart growth awards Posted online Thurs., May 29 The City of Tacoma and the Port of Tacoma have earned 2014 Governor's Smart Communities Awards for their work to promote smart growth planning and projects that contribute to quality of life in Washington State. "Washington is a great state in which to live and do business thanks to these examples of leadership and innovation in community planning and development." "The 2014 Governor's Smart Communities Award winners reflect the wide variety of efforts and collaborations that make up growth management planning in Washington," added Washington State Department of Commerce Brian Bonlender. "Communities can move forward economically when good, collaborative work like this is being accomplished." Past Tacoma and Pierce County award recipients include Town of Wilkeson—Rural Town Center Corridor Plan (2013); Pierce County—Bridge To The Beach Project (2011); City of Tacoma—Mixed-use Centers Update Project (2010); City of Puyallup—Puyallup Civic Center Project (2009); City of Sumner—Town Center Implementation Project (2008); and Tacoma Housing Authority—Salishan Hope VI Redevelopment Project (2007). Pierce County earns VISION 2040 Award for agriculture program Posted online Fri., May 30 Photo Courtesy Pierce County The Puget Sound Regional Council has honored Pierce County and its agriculture program—which aims to strengthen support for farming and farmers to ensure agriculture remains a healthy component of the Pierce County community—with a 2014 VISION 2040 Award. Other projects and programs earning awards this year include Seattle’s 12th Avenue Arts; Bremerton’s Fourth Street Improvements; Mountlake Terrace’s Arbor Village; Redmond’s Central Connector; and Everett’s Residential Infill Measures Report. Tacoma Chamber to host Smoke + Cedar ribboncutting ceremony Posted online Fri., May 30 The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony next month for Smoke + Cedar restaurant, which opened earlier this year at the Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma. The restaurant is owned by Food & Wine magazine Top Ten Chef Gordon Naccarato (who also owns Pacific Grill in downtown Tacoma) and serves lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch with modern spins on American comfort foods. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Fri., June 6, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., at Smoke + Cedar, located at 2013 South Cedar St., in Tacoma. VISION 2040 is the region’s growth management, economic, and transportation strategy, designed to meet the needs of the five-million people expected to be living in the region in 2040. It is an integrated, long-range vision for the future that lays out a strategy for maintaining a healthy region-promoting the well-being of people and communities, economic vitality, and a healthy environment. The Puget Sound Regional Council develops policies and coordinates decisions about regional growth, economic development and transportation planning in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. The Council is composed of over 80 county, city, port, transit, tribal, and state agencies serving the region. It coordinates the distribution of at least $180 million in Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration funds each year. More information is available online at psrc. org.
