Explore downtown Tacoma June 22 Posted online Weds., May 14 The Washington State History Museum will invite area residents to explore downtown Tacoma next month during the Tacoma History Hike. The event, which begins at the Washington State History Museum, will send walkers, runners, and bikers out to a variety of checkpoints within a 1.5-mile radius to answer Tacoma-related historical trivia questions within an allotted time period before returning to the museum for music, awards, goody bags, and free admission. Participants can sign up solo or in teams of up to five people. "Downtown Tacoma is such a lively and historic place," said Washington State History Museum Development Director Laura Berry. "The History Hike is a fun and active way to engage the public with our great city and support the preservation of history at the same time." The Tacoma History Hike will be held on Sun., June 22 (check-in and walk-up registration begins at 12:30 p.m.; maps will be handed out at 1:50 p.m.; hike begins at 2 p.m.). New roof planned for century-old Tacoma Municipal Barn Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Images Courtesy City of Tacoma A new roof could soon cover the former Tacoma Municipal Barn, a 104-year-old structure also known as the "City Shops and Stables Building." According to a legal notice published this week in the Tacoma Daily Index, the City of Tacoma is accept-

ing bids on a $430,000 project to install a new roof, overhangs, and gutters for the sprawling, City-owned building that occupies a full city block near the corner of South Holgate Street and South 24th Street. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m., on Tues., June 3. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. The City Shops and Stables Building, which was designed by a City engineer who also worked on construction of the Murray Morgan Bridge and the Puyallup River Bridge, is near Tacoma's historically significant Union-Depot / Warehouse Historic District. The building was nominated to Tacoma's Register of Historic Places earlier this year. Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission reviewed the nomination in March. A public hearing on the nomination was held last month. The building is one of three City-owned properties within a three-block area currently for sale as part of a Request for Proposals.
