Tacoma could raise incentives for electric vehicle owners

Posted online Tues., May 13 Article and File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor It could soon be cheaper for drivers to recharge their electric vehicles while doing business with the City of Tacoma. The City's Sustainable Tacoma Commission has recommended Tacoma City Council adopt an ordinance that would allow City employees and visitors doing business with the City of Tacoma to charge their electric vehicles at designated City-owned charging stations. "Currently, the costs to charge at City facilities are not encouraging maximum use and broader purchase and/or leasing of electric vehicles," wrote City of Tacoma Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability Director Kristin Lynett in a May 6 memo to Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax. "The fees of $1.50 to $6 can be more than the cost of a gallon of gasoline. While truly committed [electric vehicle] drivers will not need the extra incentive, the next tier of potentially interested [electric vehicle] drivers could be motivated to make the switch if they did not have to pay while at City facilities." Lynett points to a Washington State law enacted five years ago that allows electric vehicle owners to recharge their vehicles at state-owned charging stations while doing business with the State of Washington. "It is in the City's interest to encourage the use of electric vehicles in order to reduce emissions and provide Tacoma citizens with cleaner air," added Lynett

Posted online Mon., May 12 Photo Courtesy Sound Transit Sound Transit will host an open house this month to discuss the Tacoma Link Expansion Project. Earlier this year, Sound Transit's Board of Directors identified a potential Link light rail expansion alignment that would continue north from the existing Theater District Station to the Hilltop District via Stadium Way, North 1st Street, Division Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. As part of the environmental review process, Sound Transit will evaluate the potential community and environmental impacts of the proposed alignment, stations, and expanded maintenance facility near the existing facility at East 25th and G streets. The open house will be held on Tues., May 20, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at Allen AME Church, located at 1223 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in Tacoma. Visitors will learn more about the newly identified alignment, comment on potential station locations, review maintenance facility site options, discuss key design factors, discuss types of potential environmental impacts to be evaluated, and hear about next steps for the Tacoma Link Expansion Project. More information is available online at soundtransit.org.
