Police recover large amount of stolen property

MARYSVILLE — More than 60 bicycles, two motorcycles, several firearms and an unspecified amount of narcotics were found at a residence in the 5200 block of 81st Place NE, through an investigation by members of the Marysville Police Department’s N.I.T.E. Team, which Marysville Police Cmdr. Wendy Wade described as the definition of swift response.

“We received the first complaints from area residents by email on Wednesday, April 2,” Wade said. “On Thursday, April 3, our officers went out to make contact with the occupants of the residence, and they observed what were later identified as two stolen motorcycles in the front yard.”

During that same contact, one of the officers also spotted a bicycle matching the description of a unique and expensive Olympic-style racing bicycle, worth more than $7,000, that had been stolen a couple of weeks prior in a residential burglary in Marysville. When officers obtained a search warrant for the residence later that day, they not only recovered those two motorcycles and the bicycle, but also found an additional 61 bicycles during a search of the backyard SEE POLICE, PAGE 2

“We had one man there, who was already a convicted felon, who is now up on quite a few more charges, including possession of and intent to sell stolen property,” Wade said. “We’re not sure how long he was in business for, but from our end, everything was done in the same day.”

Wade explained that residents of the central Marysville neighborhood became suspicious of possible criminal activity in their midst when they noticed their neighbor receiving an unusual amount of foot traffic, and stockpiling a large number of bicycles in his backyard.

“They were paying attention to the right signs,” Wade said. “If a house has a lot of people coming and going, or a lot of cars staying for only a short while, that should be setting off some alarms. We all have visitors, but most of them don’t just stop by for a few minutes and then leave, and then do the same thing the next day and the day after that.”

children, Wade elaborated that the area has already presented the city and police with problems in terms of a transient population, which is why signed trespass letters have been obtained from the owner of that woodland property.

“We’ve had a lot of burglaries in that overall area within the past few weeks and months,” Wade said.

“These pockets of crime will pop up, and when we see them and deal with them, they’ll move to another area. With crime mapping, we’ve become more aware of those pockets, which allows us to focus resources such as the N.I.T.E. Team where they’re needed most. Because the N.I.T.E. Team isn’t out on patrol or responding to 911 calls, they have more flexibility and mobility to respond to the bigger nuisance and neighborhood livability issues.”

“While this investigation is ongoing, and we continue to look into the firearms and narcotics that were located in the search warrant, we’re hoping to return as many of the stolen bicycles as possible to their rightful owners,” Marysville Police Lt. Mark Thomas said. “The bicycles range from your average BMX, mountain and touring bikes to several highend road bikes.”

Those who spot a bicycle they believe to be theirs should contact Marysville Police Officer Brad Smith, by phone at 360-363-8387 or via email at bsmith@ marysvillewa.gov. Smith is scheduling appointments for citizens to come to the Marysville Police Station, at 1635 Grove St., to identify bicycles that might belong to them. Supporting documentation, such as receipts, documented serial numbers, personal photographs or even previously filed police reports, may be used to verify rightful ownership.

“When you don’t record things like serial numbers, it makes it that much harder to connect your stolen bicycle back to you,” Wade said. “Even if you put your own ID number on it, or hide your name on it, that helps out a lot. When cars are stolen, we can enter their VIN or license plate numbers into a database, but people who own bicycles often don’t document their ownership as well.”

Appointments for viewing the bicycles being made for Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 2:30-3:30 p.m., through Thursday, April 24.

Earlier that day, Inslee had issued a statement of his own, reporting that the President had informed him that morning of his planned visit.

“This will give the President the opportunity to see firsthand the devastation wrought by the slide, as well as the incredible community spirit flourishing in Oso, Arlington and Darrington,” Inslee said.

“From the earliest days following the slide, the President has closely monitored events in the area, and shown his concerns for the victims and their families. He and his team have been important partners in the response effort, and I believe this visit will strengthen those ties, as we face the tough work ahead.”

DelBene had also been informed by Obama that same day of his upcoming visit.

“Additionally, the President informed me that he will move quickly to sign into law legislation that was recently passed by Congress, to save the historic Green Mountain Lookout near Darrington,” DelBene said, in a statement issued on April 8.

Murray and Cantwell issued a joint statement that day, expressing their appreciation to Obama for his decision to visit the area on

April 22.

“We are confident that President Obama will see what we have seen: The tremendous resolve and determination of the people of Oso, Darrington and Arlington in the face of tragedy,” Murray and Cantwell said. “The President’s visit is another important step in demonstrating the federal government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the families, first responders, volunteers and businesses, as they recover from this disaster. We appreciate the decision to make major disaster resources available, and by the IRS to grant tax relief, and we’ll continue to work for the federal government to provide every resource possible for these communities.”

This news came after the Army Corps of Engineers had coordinated with Snohomish County to commence construction on a temporary berm, to reduce flood impacts in the slide area, in the area of State Route 530, near milepost 37, at C Post Road and 312th Street NE. Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews have assisted in these efforts by clearing debris from the search areas, and WSDOT itself is working with Snohomish County to develop a plan for clearing State Route 530 after all the search efforts are complete.

Three Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Centers are open to assist residents who have been affected by the Oso mudslide — at the Arlington Public Works Administration Building at 154 W. Cox Ave., the

Darrington Ranger District Office at 1405 Emens Ave. and the Oso Fire Station at 21824 State Route 530 NE — Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents should register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or logging onto www. disasterassistance.gov. At the close of business on April 9, FEMA reported that 377 individuals or families had registered for assistance.

While help is still needed, officials are reporting that the best way to support the slide recovery effort is through a monetary donation, and a list of trusted charities collecting such funds is included on Snohomish County’s SR530 slide resources page at http://snohomishcountywa. gov/530Slide. County officials added that Darrington is literally out of room to house physical donations, so those who wish to offer services or equipment should call 425-388-5139.

The weekend will bring a trio of Oso community fundraisers. The Mirkwood & Shire Cafe’s benefit concert series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, for $5 at the door at 117 E. Division St., while the Viking Hall at 1331 Pioneer Hwy. in Silvana will host a charity breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon that same Saturday for Oso firefighter Seth Jefferds. On Sunday, April 13, the Norpoint Shooting Center at 8620-A 172nd St. NE in Arlington will be serving up an Oso relief barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $5 a plate, with $20 for raffle tickets to try and win a Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm.

SMOKEY POINT — Snohomish County Council member Ken Klein had planned on addressing the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, April 8, about his first few months in office, but as the Arlington native noted, “All our lives were radically changed by what happened in Oso.” Klein praised agencies ranging from the helicopter pilots of Snohomish County Search & Rescue, for retrieving so many survivors on March 22, to the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation, for serving as a conduit for the community’s financial donations, while echoing compliments he’s heard from members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“FEMA couldn’t stop talking about how professional and focused everyone involved in the recovery efforts has been,” Klein said.

“The people here saw prob-

lems and wanted to get them solved.”

Klein credited Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert with helping to implement a disaster recovery center in Arlington similar to those that had proven successful in Stanwood and Camano Island, before frankly acknowledging that “Darrington was in a precarious economic condition before the slide, and it continues to be after the slide.” Klein reported that, in response, parties as diverse as longtime political figure Bob Drewel and Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin have conferred with groups such as the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County, to develop clear paths for Darrington to succeed moving forward, even long after the ongoing disaster recovery efforts have been completed.

“The first thing that has to happen is that State Route 530 needs to be reopened as quickly and sensitively as possible,” Klein said. “As

Darrington goes, so too could Arlington go, so it’s in all of our best interests to ensure that Darrington is a vibrant community.”

Klein also advocated paving the Mountain Loop Highway, to provide a reliable alternate access way, and preserving the historic Green Mountain Lookout, the latter of which he praised a number of local members of Congress for supporting.

“You can still go there and see some amazing views,” said Klein, who touted the tourism, recreation and quality of life benefits of such a feature, before moving onto a proposal to open state lands to sustainable logging.

“The last lumber sale from that area was 2010, and the Hampton Mill is only at 60 percent capacity.”

Klein likewise called for a review of the list of roads that have been closed due to a lack of funds, characterizing them as just as essential to developing a recreational economy for Darrington.

“And I know you’ve heard

about it before, but a manufacturing and light industrial center in Arlington and north Marysville would bring in up to 20,000 jobs,” Klein said. “A lot of Darrington residents already commute to Boeing, so if we could bring those aerospace jobs closer to them, it would benefit everyone.”

Three months into his first term on the County Council, Klein still sees one of his primary roles as serving as a conduit between the needs of the local communities and the county, state and federal levels of government that can serve them.

In terms of non-Oso priorities, Klein is concerned with securing funding for infrastructure improvements to the Stillaguamish Valley as a whole, as well as the business that could be brought in by allowing commercial air service to Paine Field.

“I’m a man of faith, so if you could pray for me, that would be important,” said Klein, when asked how citizens could help him do his

When Dave Duskin asked how long it would take to clear State Route 530, Klein admitted, “It’s going to be a process. In a normal situation, this could be done within 17 days, from start to finish, but everyone is sensitive to the fact that there are

still people within that area to be recovered. We’re looking at months.”

“I just want to thank you for your leadership, Ken,” Tolbert said. “It’s been a very complex process, and you’ve paid attention to your constituents.”

“I’ve just tried not to get in the way,” Klein laughed.

He attended high school in Stanwood, WA. He was born in Vancouver, BC, in 1928.

He served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corp during World War II. He became a U.S. citizen in 1967.

He and his wife managed the Glenwood Mobile Estates in Marysville. He enjoyed boating, fishing, rv-ing, and woodworking, and restoring antique classic cars.

His remains will be laid to rest at Grandview Cemetery in Anacortes in the spring at a private family gathering.

William Edward “Bill” Welsh, 66 yrs., of Arlington passed away at the Oso Landslide on March 22, 2014.

Bill will be remembered for his smile, caring ways and big heart! Bill would “give you the shirt off his back” and would do anything for family and friends.

Bill was born to Tom & Mary Welsh at Burlington Memorial in Skagit County on October 8, 1947. Bill attended all his school years in Sedro-Woolley, WA graduating in 1966.

Bill was active in track and football where he set high school athletic records. Upon graduation Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany for one year followed by another year in Vietnam, returning home in May 1969.

After his military years Bill worked at Safeway.

While working at Safeway Barbara was introduced to Bill by a mutual friend. They married on August 28, 1971 in Sedro-Woolley, WA. Their first home was in Mount Vernon and later they moved back to Sedro-Woolley until moving to Darrington in 1973 where Bill worked for Summit Timber Company.

He was then hired by Whitley Evergreen Mobile

where he worked for 18 years and lived in Arlington, WA at the time of his death.

Bi l l a nd Barbara shared many activities together. They bowled in various leagues through their marriage. Bill golfed for several years with the Redmond Eagles. He was also involved with Boys Club sports and umpiring for ASA. He is survived by his wife Barbara Welsh, his two sons Christopher Welsh; Wayne Welsh and Stacie Locke and Josh; two grandchildren Alexander Welsh and Kyle Heirman. Brothers Daniel Welsh, Michael M. Welsh; and sister Jackie Welsh Angleton; and several nieces and nephews, brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law.

Bill was preceded in death by his father Thomas Edward Welsh and his mother Mary M. Walker Welsh. Historical Society host Spring Tea

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Historical Society’s 11th annual spring tea and vintage fashion show welcomed back stylish hats and charitable donations on April 6 at the Tulalip Resort Casino Hotel.

The fashion show was held as a fundraiser to raise money for the construction of the society’s museum.

Participants showed up in large hats and springthemed clothing.

“We feature a vintage fashion show,” Marysville Historical Society President Ken Cage said. “The ladies will march across the stage.”

Among the festivities were a silent auction, a raffle drawing, a people’s choice award for best hat and table, and a fashion show, all while enjoying tea.

“It’s a fundraiser for the historical society,” Cage said. “The theme this year is museum celebration, because we are building a museum.”

The amount of donations received were estimated to be more than $8,000.

“This is our one big fundraiser,” Cage said.

Though there have been some delays of the museum project since 1974, Cage is optimistic that the structure will be finished later this year. “We’re celebrating the fact that the structure is getting built,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Cage has been involved with the historical society since 1998. “I have been their president since 2002,” he said. “And the board more or less told me to see if I can get a museum going.”

The economy and several other factors have led to setbacks for the structure. “Or, it may never be completed because we’ll be adding different exhibits,” Cage said. “It may be a work in progress for the rest of Marysville’s life.”

The new museum will replace the temporary museum now located on Third Street in Marysville.

Like its temporary counterpart, the new structure will feature old pictures, tools, historical objects and other memorabilia donated from Marysville citizens.

“There’s a telephone section of the museum that features the early telephones,” master of ceremonies Jennie Cooney said.

“I hope to raise enough money to get this building finished,” Cooney said.

“This our biggest fundraiser for the Historical Society.”

Cooney has been involved with the fundraiser for two years.

Aside from the fundraising, Cooney also enjoys the social aspect of the event.

“I love being here and listening to all the stories and history,” she said.

“It’s up and going now,” Cooney said. “So were just getting contractors in for the inside parts.”

The two teams battled for seven innings, but the Chargers came out on top, when their bats came alive in the fifth and seventh innings.

brought home to break the tie in the game.

The final inning tiebreaker was made possible by MG junior pitcher Kymberlie Devlin’s superb pitching in the seventh inning.

“We put the ball in play where it needed to be, and we picked each other up on the errors,” Moran said.

“And our pitcher did awesome.”

Though there were some rough patches in MG’s season, the Chargers did what they needed to do take the win.

“The first couple of games were rough, but we got a few practices in,” Moran said.

“We have grown as a team, and we have won some important games.”

After getting rained out on April 6, MG still came ready to play on April 7.

In the first inning, MG scored a run.

MG led for two more innings until Everett loaded the bases in the fourth inning, and scored two runs.

MARYSVILLE — The Lakewood Cougars were defeated by Archbishop Murphy, 4-2, on April 7.

The Cougars’ baseball season has been

Lakewood was 2-6 overall when it met Archbishop Murphy, which was 8-2 overall, on April 7, but it was the best the Cougars looked all season.

of the better teams in the conference,” Lakewood head coach Jake Kon said.

“It was good to see what we can do in the game.”

The Cougars looked good at the bats, and on defense, but it was executing in the later innings which cost their win.

“I thought our approach at the plate was good, but we just need to execute,” Kon said.

Lakewood started strong and held Archbishop Murphy down for six innings in the eight-inning game, but an untimely rally by Archbishop Murphy in the final two innings snatched the win from the Cougars’ claws.

“For the first six innings, we held them at bay,” Kon said. “We were able to squeak some runs across, but I think we left a couple out there, that we could have added on, that would have helped toward the end of the game.”

The first inning couldn’t have started better for Lakewood.

“The potential for this team is right up there with anybody else,” Kon said.

“They have enough talent to go and play against anybody.”

Lakewood senior Drew Earnheart pitched well, and was backed up by strong fielding in the first inning.

MARYSVILLE — The Lakewood boys soccer team was defeated by King’s, 3-0, on April 8.

King’s displayed its dominance in the game from the start, by scoring a goal on Lakewood within minutes of the first half.

“They’re a pretty organized team,” Lakewood head coach Bryce Barker said.

“They’re quite a bit taller this year.”

Barker said the Cougars were missing their competitive edge in the game.

“Starting two minutes in and giving up a 40-yard free kick goal can’t be acceptable,” he said. “If you’re trying to compete in the league, specifically on your homefield, a lackluster effort is not going to get you anywhere.”

It didn’t get any better for Lakewood throughout the remainder of the match.

The Cougars struggled in possession of the ball, while trying to keep it out of their side of the field.

“We expected what we saw out of them,” Barker said. “They dictated the pace of the game, and controlled the ball through the majority of it.”

The slick conditions of the turf didn’t help Lakewood either. The Cougars frequently lost their footing and slipped during the game.

When Lakewood was able to possess, the King’s defense seemed to be one step ahead of the Cougars’ offense. “It seemed like every time we received the ball, they had

one guy there pressuring and another guy there to win the ball off of the second touch,” Barker said. “Offensively, they had all the space occupied anytime they needed to break pressure in order to counter us.”

As the first half was waning, King’s kicked in another goal, leading 2-0 at halftime.

After halftime, King’s scored its final goal, winning the match.

“That was a classic King’s performance there,” Barker said.

Defensively, Lakewood did only allow three goals from one of the highest scoring teams in the league.

“I thought our defense played really well,” Barker said.

Lakewood is going to lose its senior-ladened core next year. With that, Barker is thinking ahead in his team’s development.

“We’re going to try and get as much as we can out of this group,” Barker said.

“We’re going to lose a lot of seniors this year. We’re going to make sure we are getting those young guys the experience they need to step in and continue competing.”

For now, Barker is prioritizing in the development of the soccer program at Lakewood.

“Right now, we’re playing with a real shallow bench, so we’re getting the younger guys the opportunity to fill in roles,” Barker said. “We have seen a lot of good things out of the guys.”

As of April 10, Lakewood’s overall record is 2-4 overall, and 2-3 in the league.

Lakewood attempted to the break tie when they were at bat, but the Cougars were tagged out at the end of the seventh.

The eighth inning did Lakewood in. Archbishop Murphy loaded up the bases, and scored two more runs.

Lakewood had one more

chance in the final inning.

Though Lakewood’s last stand was competitive, they were unable to convert in bases, taking the 4-2 loss.

Lakewood avenged its loss against Archbishop Murphy on April 9, defeating them 7-2. On April 11, Lakewood played Archbishop Murphy a third time, but the results were not available by press time.

Marysville Ford breaks ground at new location

MARYSVILLE — Victor Fernandez’s first job in the automotive industry was in 1994, and 10 years later, he opened the Marysville Ford dealership in 2004 as its coowner.

Another 10 years later, Fernandez is the sole owner of Marysville Ford, and on Wednesday, April 9, he was joined by his employees, his colleagues and his family in breaking ground at the site of the Marysville Ford

dealership’s new location, just north of the Marysville Honda dealership, on the west side of Smokey Point Boulevard.

“Marysville Ford is the fastest growing Ford store in Snohomish County,” said Xavier Cortes, general sales manager of the Marysville Ford dealership, which currently remains at 3520 136th St. NE. “People will want to come here because of new services like Quick Lane, which allows customers to come in and get their oil changed without waiting, as well as the huge new selection that we’ll have here.

We’ll be able to stock a lot more inventory.”

Among the other planned features that Cortes touted were the new facility’s expanded lounge area for adults and play area for children, complete with a coffee shop and a Ford merchandise store within the dealership itself.

“We’ve been waiting for this to happen for the past five years,” Cortes said.

“Through planning and preparation, what was once a dream is now a fact.”

As for Fernandez, he still cites his humble origins as an immigrant from Columbia

who came to America at the age of 18 with only $300 and a suitcase to his name.

“When you start with nothing, you really appreciate a business that serves

you well,” Fernandez said.

“I want to be that kind of business.”

MARYSVILLE — United Way of Snohomish County’s free tax preparation at Goodwill’s Marysville Job Training and Education Center will remain available through Tuesday, April 15.

Volunteer tax preparers are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and have helped more than 291 North County households file their taxes this year. The free service is one of the ways in which United Way is helping people reach and maintain financial stability.

Three quarters of the way into the 2014 tax season, volunteers working out of Goodwill’s Job Training and Education Center had already helped residents get back $579,275 in refunds, including $175,517 through the Earned Income Tax Credit. The average household income for those making use of these services in Marysville is a little more than $25,000 a year.

Collectively, they have saved an estimated $52,800 in preparation fees.

Individuals who want to file their taxes themselves can use a free website, set up by United Way for Snohomish County residents at http://t. uwsc.org/myfreetaxes_snoco.

This free service is available for households earning $52,000 or less.

Although no appointment is necessary, taxpayers must bring a picture ID, a Social Security card or tax identification number for everyone on the return, W2s or other income statements from all employers, any 1099 forms, records of student loan payments, records of payments for educational expenses such as college tuition, mortgage interest and property tax statements, a bank account number to receive your refund via direct deposit, last year’s tax return — if you have it — and the name, address and tax ID number for your child care provider.

If you’re filing jointly, both spouses are required to be present to file electronically.

Red Curtain prepares to present classes, art show

Scott and Beckye Randall, secretary of the Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts in Marysville, invited current and prospective volunteers to an orientation and open house on Tuesday, April 8, at their facility, located at 1410 Grove St., to recruit enough crew members to help them present not only their upcoming classes, but also events such as the Spring Art Show on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, at that same facility.

“We’ll have 18 artists at the Spring Art Show, and

they’ll all be juried entries,” Beckye Randall said. “There are lots of great crafters and craft shows already in Marysville, but this show will focus more on art.”

“It’s exciting to see this annual event evolve into an actual art show,” Scott Randall said. “Just as importantly, once people come into our facility, they’ll realize how much work we’ve put into this building. This thing hasn’t just been sitting stagnant. We’ve been preparing all along, and that labor will bear fruit in the dozen or so events that we have scheduled here within the next three to four months. Of course, a big part of that relies upon our volunteers, whether they’re manning our booth during the Strawberry Festival or
