Bill Strothman, a KOMO 4 News cameraman and former Bothell resident, was identified as one of the two people killed in the heli-

copter crash near the Space Needle in Seattle Tuesday morning. Strothman’s son Dan Strothman graduated from Inglemoor High School. Bill attended the First Lutheran

Church in Bothell with his wife Nora. “Bill Strothman’s gentle, gracious and generous spirit has been a gift in our congregation,” said a spokesperson for the church.

Strothman was a longtime videographer, who won 13 Emmy Awards during his career. After retiring from KOMO, Strothman worked as a free-lancer and also as an employee of the helicop-

Kenmore community honors Sarah Paulson BY SARAH KEHOE AND RAECHEL DAWSON Reporter Newspapers

It was Sarah Paulson’s big smile and the contagious love of life her family and friends remembered the most during a candlelight vigil Monday night. Around 300 people stood in a circle with lit candles, praying and embracing each other at Rhododendron Park in Kenmore. There was a moment of silence and an invitation for attendees to come to the center of the circle and say something about Paulson. “She always had a huge smile on her face and gave everyone lots of hugs,” said Mary-Alyce Burleigh, a friend and former Kirkland mayor. “She had the greatest spirit of anyone I’ve ever known.” Paulson was walking in the crosswalk on Juanita Drive Northeast and Northeast 160th Street on Friday morn-

ing when she was hit by a car driven by Kwesi Gyesi, 53, of Lynnwood. The Kenmore resident passed away from her injuries at Harborview Hospital later that day. “Sarah was blessed with so many lovely family and friends, just as we were blessed with a young life full of enthusiasm, love and kindness,”said Sarah Frostad Hudkins, a family friend. “I know she was looking down on us with a huge smile and wrapping her arms around each of us with a big hug.” Paulson was in her 20s and graduated from Inglemoor High School in 2011. She was enrolled in the Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) program at Bellevue College, which is an innovative 90-credit associate degree program. It gives adults with cognitive disabilities the opportunity to acquire an accredited college degree. [ more PAULSON page 9 ]

Lifetime Kenmore resident Dave Culley’s blue eyes light up when he recalls sitting beside the Sammamish

River watching boats whiz past. Those slough races were a tradition for Kenmore until 1976. “This was before Seattle had any football, soccer, basketball or any kind of sports

teams; this was our sport team, this was the event of the year,” said Culley, 69. “Thousands of people came from all over the Northwest to participate and watch the race. It was a social event;

held right in our backyards and it was the most exciting time of the year for most of us.” The Kenmore Hydroplane Cup event returns in two weeks. The event will

be held on April 5th at the north end of Lake Washington at the newly remodeled Kenmore Boat Launch. The timed exhibition race will feature a variety of boats including two cylinder

and three-and-up cylinder boats, Native American war canoes, junior hydroplanes and RC hydroplane demonstration. Competitors will race one or two boats at a [ more EVENT page 11]
