West Hills STEM Academy delayed School district financing isn’t adequate to cover construction costs BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Last Thursday, the weight of the decision fell across the room as heavy as sawdust covers a construction site. The Bremerton School District board members paused, thought quietly and then finally decided. The construction on the West Hills STEM Academy would have to wait. Other projects needed more immediate funding, such as the leaky roof at Bremerton High School. During a bi-monthly board meeting, the members again postponed the project due to financing issues. Wayne Lindberg, director of finance and operations for the district, laid out the options for the board. For the project to be fully funded, it would have cost a little over $2.5 million, Lindberg said, which is more than the district currently has available for such projects. Without a loan, that amount would have needed to have been funded through the capital levy that was approved in 2012, which has recent collections coming up in the next two months. The 2015 collection would have also been put toward the project, pushing it into a 2015 start date. Lindberg estimated that the shortfall if construction were to start in a few weeks could range between $400,000 and $700,000. With the option to move forward with the project, Lindberg advised they take out a loan to themselves, take out an interfund loan, or transfer out of the general fund to make the project happen. “We’re just gonna be a little bit short,” he said. A year ago the board received a presentation from Lindberg letting them know that there would be a cash flow issue in the future when it came to the project. While it was discussed to possibly put aside a “specific reserve” for the West Hills STEM Academy, it never happened, Lindberg said. The board deliberated and bounced questions off one another

regarding other pressing issues in the district that may need the capital funds more immediately, like the Bremerton High School roof. The district has spent around $12,000 fixing the leaks in the roof that was meant to last much longer than it has. Those funds for repairs come out of the capital levy funds, Lindberg said. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Leavell weighed in on the topic after Director and Board President Scott Rahm asked what the priorities were and what’s changed since when the capital levy project was approved. “I’m not sure that there’s bucket brigades all over the building. There’s a concern it’s leaking into the walls and causing different types of problems,” Leavell said, noting that the rainwater could get into the walls and wreck electricity. Leavell said the prior administration adjusted for the academy to start moving things along for the construction. Grade levels were added and the building was switched and structured to how it would function as a true STEM school, Leavell said. But other building issues popped up in the meantime, calling for the board’s attention immediately as well, not making it an easy decision, he said. “This has been one of those programs and one of those projects that we’ve been touting,” said Leavell. “This does become a really tough decision for you. I hate using the word “prioritizing” because that’s not really what we’re doing. What we’re doing is saying are we willing to still make that tough decision with the school district’s budget and still accomplish both projects over the next two years.” Among the projects to be paid for by the capital levy include roof replacements at the high school and Crownhill Elementary School. Other items on the list included improvements to technology, energy upgrades for long-term savings and upgraded fire alarm systems. Lindberg said some of the projects are underway. Another item — the central district kitchen — has already been completed. Some of the work at West Hills STEM Academy can possibly get done this year, including sidewalks, a SEE STEM, A9

Buckle up for Beethoven in Bremerton BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Conductor Alan Futterman, the Music Director of the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra, says there is a lot to look forward to in this Saturday’s tribute to Ludwig Van Beethoven. “I think that the audience will be blown away

by the level of playing they will hear this weekend,” Futterman said. The performance, “Ludwig’s Legacy,” is set to start at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, March 15, at the Bremerton Performing Arts Center. The all volunteer orchestra will perform the Egmont Overture, the Beethoven Violin Concerto and the Seventh

Symphony. The latter is described by Futterman as some of the first “heavy metal” music. “The music has driving and relentless rhythms pounding away at the same chords over and over again,” he said. “It had excitement and rhythm in a way that no music had ever had before. It

gets maximum energy and maximum sound out of a classical orchestra. It is fearsome and beyond anything Mozart or Haydn or his predecessors had done.” And don’t let the fact that the symphony is made up of working professionals fool you into thinkSEE BEETHOVEN, A9

Crews remove two Highland Avenue trees BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Bremerton Public Works crews removed a pair of trees planted along the sidewalk of Highland Avenue last week. Milenka HawkinsBates, a Public Works manager, said that her department can remove trees that are causing major safety hazards, either following a request from a resident, as was the case last week,

or at the department’s discretion. The branches of the Highland Avenue trees were interfering with power lines running to a pair of homes and the roots of the trees have buckled sidewalks. At least one member of the city’s Tree Committee, though, was concerned by the way the removal occurred. “At a minimum the city needs to communicate its intentions, the reason for its intentions, and what the city is going

Trees and other things There’s more tree turmoil in Bremerton. Last week, city crews cut down two large trees on Highland Avenue. When passersby noticed, a member of the city’s tree committee got a phone call. Unfortunately, he knew nothing about what was going on. It seems the city’s tree committee isn’t on the “need to know” list. It was last year when the Bremerton city council approved the formation of a tree committee to advise the city and Mayor Patty Lent on “all things tree.” The subject surfaced when the city made plans to remove all the trees along Fourth Street from Pacific Avenue to Washington. There was a public outcry to save the trees, although some, including merchants along Fourth Street, wanted them to go. They said the trees had overstayed their welcome, grew too big, and were making it difficult to walk down the sidewalks where roots were pushing up the concrete. To date, those trees remain in place. But a year prior to that, a few blocks to the west, about 30 trees on Fourth Street were cut down without ever being discussed by elected city officials or department heads. Regarding the most recent adventures along Highland Avenue, it became known that those two trees were interfering with electrical lines in the area, and were buckling the sidewalks. Homeowners there called the city to request that they be removed. It’s true that no city can operate reasonably without seasoned employees making decisions in the field. But with the “tree history” in Bremerton, it would have made sense for someone in the city to call the tree committee chairman and let them in on what was going on. There’s nothing worse that recruiting volunteers to give of their time on a project, and then leaving them out of the loop.

Keeping the public informed

And while we’re speaking of leaving the public out, Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue is making sure that no one in Tracyton feels left out of its decision-making process on whether to close Tracyton Station 44. A public meeting and open house is set for March 24 at 3:30 p.m. at Station 44. A few months back, CK District officials learned the hard way that residents are paying attention. It happened when they altered staffing levels at the Chico Station without getting public opinion. Due to a reduction in staffing, that station has days when there are no professional firefighters on duty. It’s been a subject of some discontent. But this time around, they’re taking every measure to make sure the public has its say. And that’s the way it should be.

There’s good news and the bad news The Wheaton Way corridor has most certainly suffered its share of disappointments over the years. Disappointments that have been the direct results of poor planning and leadership as well as extremely poor investor and private property owner decisions. I really feel for the businesses that do exist and succeed there. I frequent many of them as often as I can for what services or goods I need and can still obtain within the city of Bremerton. The good news is that at the last Bremerton City Council meeting, the council voted to revoke the long term development plan that never really fit what was needed, desired or more importantly affordable for Bremerton. While in place, this plan with its visions of pedestrian and bike pathways connecting a mixture of residential and retail stifled a considerable amount of development that could have and should have occurred. It was incapable of accommodating the needs of what developers and well established nationally and regionally recognized businesses with money in hand to construct were asking for. The misconception prevails that it is and was only the city’s business and occupation tax to blame for driving away or preventing new businesses from operating within the Wheaton area. When, in fact, it was actually a restrictive development plan that caused the city to turn away what

Everything Bremerton

Colleen Smidt could have been some much needed improvements and new businesses. I would like to thank the city planning commission for their recommendations and hard work they put in on getting this plan revoked. Now that the Wheaton area goes back to being a less restrictive mix of high-density commercial corridor and residential zoning you would think that existing businesses who are currently bringing in that all important tax revenue to the city would be encouraged to thrive and improve. Unfortunately that is not the case. In a “cut off your nose to spite your face” type of move, the city of Bremerton administration has decided to engage its own determination of what types of business does and does not “belong” within the city limits to

fit individual agendas. Sure, on the surface certain corrections and leeway regarding business operations within certain types of zoning might seem reasonable. However, this leeway is not always exercised in the best interest of the city. One example is the for-profit needle exchange that was operating out of compliance within a residential area. Also, of additional note was the occupancy and business permit that was approved for the bondage club that moved into the Charleston area. Approval was granted for this additional adult-only business despite existing city restrictions and a rather hard limit on the number of such adult type businesses that are allowed to exist at any one time within the city limits. Mistakes with permitting and the questionable choices of enforcement within a pick and choose environment of what does or does not “belong” only undermines the faith and trust of the existing business community which works very hard to operate within the existing rules or for those new businesses looking to locate their operations in Bremerton under a community development system that is clearly defined and is executed in a correct and professional manner.

Obama lying and deceiving citizens On Obama’s watch: Fast and furious. Fully automatic weapons given to the Mexican cartel by Obama administration and Eric Holder. A border patrolman murdered with same-style weaponry issued by Obama and Eric Holder. Obama at first demanded to get to the truth of this travesty. Congressional hearing were closing in on truths that incriminate Obama administration. Why, Mr. President? You stated to want the truth and denied on national TV of knowing anything about fast and furious. It’s funny how the hard truth turns martyrs into liars and cowards. Benghazi: More lies, more deceit. Four very brave men, including US Ambassador Chris Stevens, murdered by terrorist after repeated warnings from Ambassador Stevens for increased security and protection from potential threats. Then Democrat Secretary of State Hilary Clinton ignored repeated warnings. During Benghazi hearings, Hilary shouted angrily. At this point what does it matter? Four Americans are dead. On Obama’s autocratic style rule more lies and more deception. Deny, delay, destroy. A very telling pattern used continually to deceive the American public and news media misleads with mistruths and deception protecting Obama and democrat cronies. Obamacare lies: If you like your health care plan, you can keep your plan, period. If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, period. Absolutely no equivocation. Once again repeating his lies day after day, month after month. All on national TV and again the news media covering his lies and deceit of the American people. IRS scandal: Top official Lois Lerner, targeting conservative groups, During congressional hearings, Ms. Lerner takes the fifth amendment to not testify. Obama states not one smidgeon of corruption has taken place on national TV, repeating the same lies daily and once again the media falls in line with more deception and lies. With all the lies and deception of Obama, Democrats, and a very corrupt media pertaining to

said scandals, the lies and deceit continue. No one held accountable. You are losing your country, America. I truly believe Obama is dismantling our constitution to become a more socialist nation and the media is assisting. Need more proof? Read writings of Bernard Shaw and Sol Lewinsky. If the light comes over you, America can still recover. If not, all of us deserve what we get for ignoring the warning signs. Better wake up. Evil does succeed when good people do nothing. Olympic parents lend support We would like to respond to a recent article posted in the Central Kitsap Reporter, “A place where gymnastics comes with support”. We are writing this first as the proud parents of a wonderful young girl. Our daughter has progressed through recreational gymnastic classes and is now competing on a team

at Olympic Gymnastics Center (OGC). OGC has been an amazing place for her to grow as a young lady and as an athlete. After attending many gymnastic meets, we can confidently say OGC is led by some of the best coaches in the state of Washington. We know this through watching the girls practice and compete. We can see an incredible work ethic and a drive to succeed. Most importantly, we see a positive spirit in how they compete and interact as young girls growing up. The “other gyms” as noted in the article are developing young girls into wonderful members of our community. It is being done through caring, supportive and excellent coaching. The second reason for writing is to directly address the article and comments made. It is wonderful to see places like our local gyms being built. Places where children can go to develop into positive community members. In the recent article, Cascade Elite West made comments that might lead people to believe “other gyms” teach in a negative

way. We will say nothing could be further from the truth! It was disappointing to read statements with negative undertones directed at other local gyms. Joe and Kim Marzano Bremerton

Move left for patrol vehicles The Washington State Patrol is reminding drivers that state law requires them to slow down, and move left if safe, when passing emergency vehicles stopped beside the roadway. Emergency vehicles include police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and highway maintenance vehicles with emergency lights activated. The law went into effect in 2011, after a series of incidents involving not only police cars, but other emergency vehicles and the death of a tow truck driver. This law couldn’t be easier to comply with. All you have to do is ease off the gas and, if it’s safe, ease to the left. But use caution. We don’t

want people making sudden maneuvers that could be even more dangerous. Since the law went into effect, State Troopers have contacted more than 10,000 violators using a mix of education and enforcement to win compliance. Troopers report that most drivers understand the reason for the law once it’s explained to them. Although failure to move left is a traffic violation, if the behavior is egregious enough to endanger emergency workers the conduct becomes criminal, and can result in a jail sentence. During the next few weeks, troopers statewide will be making an extra effort to contact violators they might observe in the course of other routine work. We’ve asked them to keep a watchful eye on their fellow emergency workers, and take action when they observe a violation.

Local Democrats are led by a native daughter BY LESLIE KELLY LKELLY@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

(Editor’s note: Last month we featured an interview with Kitsap County Republicans Chair Chris Tibbs. This week we feature Kitsap County Democratic Chair Katherine Woods. Here, she answers questions about herself, Kitsap Democrats and upcoming races.) Tell me a bit about you. I was born at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton. I grew up here, graduated from Central Kitsap High

School, and moved to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah in 2008. After I graduated from college, I moved back home and married my husband, Michael. We have a home in Bremerton and a corgi named Benny. I’m 23 years old. How long have you lived in Kitsap County? All of my life, outside of the three years I was in Utah for school. What do you do professionally? I’m an External Relations Specialist in the King

County Executive’s office. How long have you been involved in politics? What campaigns have you worked on? I’ve been active in politics since I was 16. In Utah during the 2008 presidential campaign, I lead a team of student volunteers and we made phone calls into Colorado and drove there on the weekends to doorbell. When I moved back, I became involved with local campaigns, starting with Christy Cathcart’s re-election to the CK School Board.

Katherine Woods In 2012, I was a Field Organizer and later Regional Field Director for the coordinated campaign that re-elected President Obama, elected Governor Jay Inslee and Congressman Derek Kilmer, and passed samesex marriage in Washington State. In January 2013, I was unanimously elected chair of the Kitsap County Democrats. Last year I managed King County Executive Dow Constantine’s re-election campaign. When did you become head of Kitsap Democrats? I was elected last January for a two-year term. What led you to that role? While working on the 2012 presidential and coordinated campaign, I mostly worked out of the Silverdale office managed by the Kitsap County Democrats. I became

acquainted and close with a lot of the members of the organization, and was encouraged to run. What are your responsibilities? The role of chair is all encompassing and goes far beyond what I could have imagined. Our bylaws reference keeping a list of updated PCOs and running our meetings, but they don’t mention the countless hours spent recruiting volunteers, looking for office space, writing emails, updating the website, coordinating events, etc., all to elect Democrats. The job takes as much time as you’re willing to put in. I often find myself wishing I had dozens more hours to work for the party, and that’s after spending thirty hours a week on it. But, of course, it’s all worth it if it means electing Democrats: people who want to make sure that every child receives a good education, that everyone has access to affordable healthcare, that we take care of our planet, and that every person has the opportunity to succeed. Based on their actions, I don’t believe the Republican Party believes that, and it’s disheartening to say the least. We should be electing people who want to better our nation and the lives of its people, not bring government and the services it provides to a grinding halt. What do you think the

status of the party is? As I’m sure you know, the last two years have been frustrating given the flipflopping that’s occurred in the State Senate. But we’re working hard to change that. We work hand in hand with our legislative district organizations to ensure good Democrats are elected and re-elected. We are also in good shape county wide. We have some excellent candidates prepared to run this year, and I’m confident in where we’ll end up come November. What are the big elections coming up? The c o u nt y commissioner race will be a big one, obviously. Irene Bowling challenging Tim Sheldon in the 35th is drumming up excitement, and we have plans for races in the 26th as well. And then there’s the rest of the county-wide seats, as Auditor Walt Washington and Sheriff Steve Boyer are retiring. We have truly exceptional candidates, Dolores Gilmore and Gary Simpson, up for those spots. But since this is a “blue moon year,” — no statewide, top-of-the-ticket candidate — it’s going to be an interesting election year for sure. The Republicans are saying that Jan Angel’s victory shows an upswing in support for Republicans in the county...what do you think? I wouldn’t say that at all. Sen. Angel has been an elected official in this area for a long time and, in a special election year, a lot of people don’t turn out to vote. Nathan Schlicher, who was virtually unknown to the district until the end of 2012, came extremely close to beating someone who many considered the incumbent in the race. Looking at the data, our problem was turnout, not Democrats voting for Sen. Angel. Does the Kitsap Tea Party affect the Democrats in any way in Kitsap County? The Tea Party — or any third party — has an effect on us in that primary races become more interesting. It might change field strategy, who we talk to and who we don’t.

Kitsap woodcarvers meet to share their art BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Eighteen years ago Ernie Travelstead fell in love with woodcarving. His favorite pieces to create include birds and fish, but he’s also been known to carve an ornate coffee table or two. “I retired. Then I went to a woodcarver show, and I went and bought the tools that same day,” said Travelstead, now 75. Last Saturday, he had won a few ribbons for his work, and he also brought items to sell as well. “I don’t give a squat about the ribbons,” he said. “It’s just nice to be recognized.” If there’s one particular element that was showcased quite well at the Kitsap County Woodcarvers 28th annual juried show, it was that any one of any age can start woodcarving as a

Life-like birds on display at the annual Woodcarvers Show hobby. The show was hosted and open free of charge to the public last weekend at the West Sound Improvement Club. The event was put on by the Kitsap County Woodcarvers, a club of dedicated woodworkers who love the art. Once a year the

group holds the event as a fundraiser, and as an opportunity for local woodcarvers to showcase their best work in the show. Throughout the weekend, plenty of accolades and admiring glances were bestowed upon the 130 pieces displayed for the

judges and public. Carvers brought their best pieces forward, including hand carved bowls, delicate flowers, birds and other pieces so fragile that signs warned visitors, “Please do not touch.” Carvers could enter pieces into six different sections, which all had individuals categories for various carving types, allowing judges to pass out hundreds of ribbons. Entries were accepted for woodworking of all types, including scroll-saw work, driftwood, pyrography, turning and intarsia. Both adults and children were encouraged to enter, and the youngest participant was 9 years old. Between admiring art and chatting with artists, attendees could also enter a raffle for various woodworking tools, purchase wood and tools from the wood shop, or watch carvers at work chip-

ping away at wood. While the annual show is a way for artists to showcase their work, it also serves as a recruitment tool for the Kitsap County Woodcarvers. Three years ago, Dawn Barnett walked into the annual show to see what it was all about. What she saw made her fall in love, she said. Barnett saw the wood-burned pieces and knew pyrography — as it is typically called — was what she was meant to do in her spare time. Her husband also got into woodworking as well, and he often helps cut Barnett’s wood pieces that she wants to burn on. “I go to the fire pile and my husband cuts my rounds,” she said, holding up a small,

at various community meetings including at the Port of Bremerton Tuesday evening. He offered this: “Wear your Seahawks 12th Man gear and come ready to meet a special guest.” Rumor has it that the Seahawks’ mascot Blitz will be in the parade. Sign up at 9 a.m. at the Kitsap Bank at Sixth and

Pacific to march in the parade which begins at 10 a.m. The route runs through downtown Bremerton and at the end, there will be

rounded piece of wood as small as a teacup saucer. “I’m stealing our heat,” she joked. The Kitsap Woodcarvers have a membership of 56, and at least 22 are female members, Campbell said. As of Saturday afternoon, the club had recruited three new members and had hopes of more signing up through Sunday. After watching hundreds of guests come through, most of the club’s members thought the show to be a success, despite the rainy weather. “We got more entries than we expected, which is good,” said Mark Campbell, Kitsap County Woodcarvers show chairman. “We got a lot of variety. It’s just incredible the talent that goes into it.”

Exhibit honors Kitsap County working women BY LESLIE KELLY LKELLY@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Some of them were teachers and nurses, working in the more traditional employment roles for women. Others were ferry captains, politicians and even bankers, breaking the mold of what women were expected to do. An exhibit at the Kitsap County Historical Museum honors them all, and all women in Kitsap County who are women of character, courage and commitment. The exhibit, titled “Women’s Work: Breaking the Mold,” opened last week at the museum in downtown Bremerton. Volunteer museum cura-

tor Nina Hallet put the exhibit together as a part of the National Women’s History Project which is honoring a dozen women throughout the nation and history this month. In Kitsap County, Hallet found great examples of women who led the way from the early days to recent times. One such woman was Mary Watkins, better known as “Polly.” In 1893, she left London to come to American and settled in Kitsap County. She traveled by ferry to Seattle almost daily for years to work as a maid, cook and nursemaid in the homes of the very wealthy. She wanted to earn enough money to build herself a

house so she didn’t have to live in the “shack” that her husband called their home. “She was a woman with goals and the will to reach them,” said Patricia Drolet, museum executive director. Many of the women featured were teachers and nurses and carried on more traditional roles, Drolet said, especially for the time in which they lived, the 1800s and early 1900s. All of them showed character, courage and commitment to whatever they pursued, she said. In 1881, Elizabeth Ordway became the first female school superintendent for Kitsap County.

Ordway is featured in the exhibit. “She fought for female rights,” Drolet said. “And she always signed her name L.M. Ordway, so as not to be judged because she was a woman postmaster.” Drolet added that in those days, even titles showed how hard women had to work to break the mold. There was no title of postmistress. Scattered throughout the exhibit are some museum artifacts of the work that women have done. Included is an oldfashioned washboard and tub because back then, washing was always women’s work, historians said.

If you don’t make your final arrangements, who will? Surely, it’s not a responsibility you want to leave to your children. Talk to one of our counselors or funeral directors to find out why planning in advance is one of the most economical and loving things you can do for your family. It lessens the financial and emotional burden from them during a difficult time and spares them from making the painful decisions. You will provide your family a sense of relief and a true gift: peace of mind.

An all-female crew at the shipyards during World War I era. 1800s. She is thought to be one of few female skippers, when in 1899 her husband “mysteriously” disappeared and she took over the ferries. Of the more modern day women in the exhibit are the Langer women. Hannah Norum Langer was the first female bank president west of the Mississippi when she took over the Kitsap Bank in 1952. Her daughter, Helen, followed her and was chairman of the board at the bank until 2011. The exhibit will remain up through May. Hours at the museum are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday. It is located at 280 Fourth St. Call 360-479-6226 for more information or go to www.kitsaphistory.org. Soroptomist clubs from Port Orchard, Bremerton and North Kitsap helped to fund the exhibit.

Another woman featured is Millie Woodward, who in 1940 along with her husband, took over editorship of the Bainbridge Review newspaper. They ran the paper until 1963 and it was the only west coast paper to speak out against the Japanese interment camps during World War II. The exhibit also includes a photograph of an all-female construction crew at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards in 1919, during World War I. In the photo, the women hold rivets, buckets and tongs. A second photo shows a woman “ship fitter” driving a bridge crane at the shipyard during World War II. Then there’s Dora Troutman, who was the wife of the owner of the “Mosquito Fleet,” small ferries that operated around the Kitsap Peninsula during the late

ing the performance will be somehow less than top-notch. “None of (the orchestra members) are professional musicians, but many of them could be,” Futterman said. “The Bremerton Symphony is an amazing story. With orchestras failing all over the place, Bremerton has maintained an outstanding orchestra since 1942.” There are lots of teachers, a couple of physicians, various other professionals and the principal bassist is an underwater surveyor. “That’s got to be unique among orchestras, but here we are in Bremerton and the submarines have got to know where to go,” Futterman said. For his part, Futterman holds a master’s degree from the Juilliard School of Music with two years of Doctoral studies in Musicology and Baroque Performance Practice. a public backlash when a proposal was floated by Public Works to remove all the trees along Fourth Street between Washington and Pacific avenues. A year prior to that, city street crews cut down 30 globe locust trees along Fourth Street between Naval and Warren without any notification to the public or city administrators. The crews left the bases of the trees in place, but eventually cut

down the trunks to street level several weeks later. The Highland Avenue stumps will also be ground down and crews will pour a section of new sidewalk in front of at least one of the trees, if not both. Tom Kay, who has owned homes in the neighborhood for a couple of years, says his next door neighbor was the one who called the city about removing a tree. Kay subsequently asked

that the city to remove the tree in front of his property as well. “It’s nice to have trees on the street, but it’s kind of a love-hate relationship,” Kay said. “I mean, look at the condition of the sidewalk.” Kay was taking advantage of some sunshine on Monday afternoon to make improvements to the home he owns that fronts one of the new tree stumps. “Our goal is to try and

bring it up and make it a nice place for people to live by fixing it up,” he said. “I’m glad to see the city doing that, too. I like that the city is committed to improving things around here.” Hawkins-Bates said that the city is in the process of looking at some trees near the intersection of Naval Avenue and Gregory Way that a resident has raised concerns about. She says

there will also be ongoing discussion about the remaining trees along Highland Avenue and what could or should be done there. She also said that the tree committee is working on an inventory of street trees to develop a ranking system about which trees should be removed and whether they should be replanted and with what types of trees.

School of Music in Boston with Charles Mariano. While still a doctoral candidate, he served as assistant conductor to Maestro Vladimir Kin of St. Petersburg and participated in master classes with Sir George Solti and Leonard Bernstein. Here is a closer lookup at Saturday’s musical lineup: • The Egmont Overture commemorates the life of Count Egmont and the war of independence for the people of the Netherlands. Beethoven wrote this rousing and heroic overture to accompany the play by his idol Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. • The Beethoven Violin Concerto is the basis and the template for every great concerto that followed. The themes are simple, powerful and memorable. This will feature superb 16-year-old soloist and Northwest native Lara Lewison, who has already won several competitions and appeared with various orchestras. • The finale, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, a work that Beethoven himself sin-

gled out as one of his greatest creations, is known for its insistent, driving and exciting rhythm. The second movement of this Symphony is one of the most eloquent and profound statements in any music. It has been a favorite of musicians and audiences since the premier performance, when the Viennese public demanded that it be encored before they would allow the rest of the symphony to proceed. Individual concert and season subscriptions for the Bremerton Symphony’s 20132014 season, which runs until May 2014, are still available. Individual concert tickets are $24 for adults, $19 for senior and military, and $8 for youth and students. Information on concerts and tickets can be found at www.bremertonsymphony.org or by calling 373-1722. A pre-concert chat with Maestro Alan Futterman will be held in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Bremerton Performing Arts Center, 1500 13th Street in Bremerton.

was the first to make a “reluctant” motion. After considering the bids of 11 different companies, including local ones, the price was still too high for the board to accept at the moment. “Having always had a very comfortable reserve fund, I am hesitant on depleting it at this time. However, I also am a very, very, very strong advocate of the STEM academy,” said Perkins. “I’d just like to make sure we are fiscally

sound and not operating on a hope and a prayer.” Perkins made a motion not to accept the bid due to financial constraints. All other board members agreed with the motions Perkins made, except for Ken Watkins who was absent from the meeting. The next Bremerton School Board meeting will be March 20 at 5 p.m. in the board room at the District Administration Building at 134 Marion Ave. N. in Bremerton.

Community Health Fair all about healthy living BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Despite the fat raindrops falling all around them, third graders Marissa Quitevis and Emalee Kylben were determined to have a good time while completing a bike rodeo event last Saturday morning. The bike rodeo was just one of several activities at Cottonwood Elementary for students to partake in during the school’s second annual Community Health Fair. The event is part of a county-wide 5210 initiative designed to encourage healthy eating and physical activity to reduce the obesity rates in Kitsap County. Both Quitevis and Kylben —

who are active in the school’s unicycle club — weren’t scared of a little rain while participating in the rodeo which was set up to teach students about proper hand signals, stopping at intersections and yielding when needed. Orange cones and stop signs dotted the basketball court behind the school where students could get fitted for helmets and hop on a bike for some exercise. Quitevis noted that it’s important to follow all the road rules to avoid injuries. The third grader remarked that she wants to stay healthy as well, and that the event taught her quite a bit. “You can do more things if you are healthy and active,” she

said Gail Smith, Cottonwood’s physical education teacher. Smith was approached by PTSA member Lalaine Diaz about hosting a fair at the school. When Smith heard the idea, she fell in love with it, she said. “It’s wonderful because I can preach this to the kids and they get it,” she said of her daily work. “I’ve got pedometers on the kindergarten students so they can see how many steps they take (throughout the day).” Smith said that while she teaches the basics of healthy eating at school, sometimes the message is lost by the time students make it home. By hosting the fair, the parents are able to make the connection to what their child is learning, which is a huge benefit, Smith said. “I feel like I want to get this message out to adults,” she said. “Because the kids go home and it stops. This is my outreach to the community.” While the bike rodeo took place outside, vendors packed the school’s gymnasium and filled attendees grocery bags with information about healthy living. Speakers offered advice on gardening in small areas like apartment patios or a corner of

Massage therapists, dentists and farmers were available to answer questions from parents and students alike. For energetic students, hip hop, tennis and kickboxing classes were available to burn off some energy. All vendors volunteered their time to come to the event. “It’s a really good program for the community and Cottonwood,” said Diaz, who brought the idea to Smith. “We’re adopting this concept. It’s not really just for the children. It’s for the adults as well. All of us can benefit from this..” The 5210 Kitsap concept is an overall lifestyle change meant to impact various parts of Kitsap County. The 5210 stands for eating at least 5 servings of veggies and fruits per day; cutting down on screen time to less than two hours per day, participating in at least an hour of moderate to vigorous exercise, and drinking zero soda and sugary drinks.

CK Fire teams raises $16,000-plus in stair climb BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

They went from $9,000 to more than $16,000. That’s the increase in funds earned by the Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue team, this year over last, via their participation in the 23rd Annual Scott Safety Firefighter Stair Climb at the Columbia Tower in Seattle this past weekend. Per capita, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue finished in the top ten for fund-raising at the stair climb in Seattle this past Sunday. The annual event challenges 1,800 firefighters from nearly 300 departments around the world to raise funds and awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Financial tallies were still being made this week, but organizers say that the event raised more than this year’s $1.55 million goal.

Contributed photo

Seven from CK Fire & Rescue completed the stair climb. Central Kitsap firefighters raised more than $16,000 this year. Per capita, that works out to $1,545.61, which was the tenth best total out of the nearly 300 participating departments. Resident firefighter Ryan Orseth, who also works

at Silver City Brewery in Silverdale, was responsible for raising more than $5,200

of the team total. He’s been with the department for five years and this year marked his fourth competing in the climb. “Once you look up at that building, you find yourself in awe,” he said. “It’s a moment where you just realize that, very shortly you’ll be climbing up those stairs gasping for air with every muscle in your body telling you to stop.” One of the many reasons the firefighters don’t stop, though, is because as they ascend every flight of stairs they see a poster of a child who has fought leukemia or lymphoma. “It gives me goose bumps just talking about it,” Orseth said. “It hits everybody hard, because if you don’t know

somebody who has it, someday you’ll meet someone who does.” In all, participants climb 69 flights and 1,311 steps, gaining 788 feet in vertical elevation. They do all of that while dressed in 50 pounds of “bunker gear” including a helmet, fireproof coat and pants, boots, breathing apparatus and air tanks used to fight fires. Central Kitsap’s fastest finisher was David Mackovjak at 20 minutes and 18 seconds. Orseth was close on his heels at 21:56. Not far behind them was Chief Scott Weninger at 23:17. Weninger, who took over the district in August 2013, has said that he’s wanted to take part in

the actual climb for years and finally got his chance. Among the 59 chiefs that climbed this year, Weninger finished a very respectable 31st. Other CKF&R firefighters that climbed this year included Doug Bekenyi (24:39); Kyle Good (28:35); Linda Jenkins (32:01); Steven Werner (37:59); and Lindsay Muller (41:51). The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer.

Man decides to steal instead of going to therapy A Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a theft at JC Penney’s after a Bremerton man became unruly after being caught stealing. The 30-year-old was caught stealing a $40 watch, and he was confronted by loss prevention just outside the door. The man grabbed and pushed at the chest of the security officer, who in turn pinned the man down to handcuff him. The thief told the officer, “just kill me and other similar statements,”

according to the KCSO report. When a deputy arrived, the man admitted to stealing and assaulting the security officer, and apologized to the officer. The man said he ran out of anti-depressants and “that he should have gone to see his counselor instead of shoplifting.” Upon searching the man, the deputy located a glass pipe with a small amount of white substance in it, which was not enough for testing. The man told the deputy he had been smoking incense when asked what was in the tube. The Bremerton man was booked for

assault three with a $5,000 bail and for theft three with a $1,000 bail. He was also placed under suicide watch at the jail, states the report.

Homeless man found living in vacant home is arrested

A homeless Bremerton man was arrested March 5 after being found living inside a vacant home. Upon arrival, Bremerton Police detectives found the suspect to be “mumbling words, twitching and sweating, appearing to be on narcotics,” states a police report. For the safety of detectives, he was placed into hand-

cuffs for the questioning procedure. When asked what drugs he was on, the man told authorities “coke” and that he was aware he committed a crime by breaking and entering the house. The man told detectives he had been living there for about a week. The 33-year-old said he noticed the house was vacant, and he broke the door and tossed a brick through the window. He told detectives “it was an accident” and when the detective told him he thought it was more on purpose, the man agreed by saying, “it was.” He was placed under arrest, and while in

Friday, March 14, 2014 custody detectives discovered a glass pipe that tested positive for meth. He was booked into KCSO jail and his bail was set at $22,500.

Son steals TV from parents

On March 6, a caller notified authorities about a residential burglary on NW David Road. The caller said a male was at the back door with what looked to be a screwdriver, trying to get inside while the occupants were not home. The suspect got into a gray Lincoln town car with two other passengers. An on-duty Bremerton police

officer saw the car and stopped the vehicle to detain the occupants. The suspect had asked for a ride to “a friend’s house to pick up a television,” states a certificate of probable cause. His friends waited in the car while he paced around the house and finally emerged with a large television. The home owner confirmed on scene that her son was the one who broke into the home and was not welcome inside the home. The son admitted to taking the TV, but planned to “give it back.” His bail was set at $50,000.

Gary Chambers, April Spain, Dan Engelhard and Anna Borer take on multiple roles in “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” Honey Toad Studio told through a series of vignettes featuring four actors, each taking on multiple roles. “Every scene they play a different character,” Brodley said. “So you’ll see the same people playing couples, but they’ll be different couples. six or eight different parts. It’s a challenge for actors, but it’s fun for them.” Brodley notes that the play, while traversing different characters and themes, covers all stages of relationships from dating to break ups, and sticking together through thick and thin. “My favorite moment in the entire thing is in the second act,” He said. “There is a song called ‘Shouldn’t I Be Less in Love with You,’ which is one of the guys singing to a woman. They’ve been married X number of years, and he’s realizing he’s still in love. And that’s a really poignant and sweet moment. It’s something we can all hope and strive for.” On the other end of the

spectrum, Brodley said, there is another scene featuring a couple that runs through their entire relationship, right to the break up, on their first date. “And of course, it’s just funny,” Brodley said. Carbajal, however, with the help of musical director Nils Thompson, was certain not to leave the music out of the musical comedy. “With this one, we are going super-cabaret with it,” Carbajal said, further noting that the production goes light on other aspects of the play in order to showcase the music. “We decided to strip it down because the music is so funny and the lyrics are so funny that we wanted to focus on the actors and the music itself,” he said. “We

are going minimal stage, very minimal props, and minimal costumes.” Each song takes on a different theme. “Take for instance, there is song about a man who no longer speaks like a man, he speaks the way he would to his toddler,” Carbajal said. “He speaks to everybody that way. He’s got a whole song about how he can no longer function as an adult anymore, he only speaks like a child.” The song brings to mind the change people go through after having children, and how that experience affects their friendships. “So they’re no longer humans, and his friend See Musical, Page 3

A few tips for beginning Kitsap bird watchers kitsap birding By GENE BULLOCK

ird watching can be a little like fishing. If you sit for hours without a nibble on your very first try, you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about. But once you’ve landed a big one you could be hooked for life. And once you get started, you soon learn that a little knowledge and the right equipment can make all the difference. Birds may seem like nondescript brown “jobs” lurking in the trees — job, because it might take some work to figure out what they are. But that perception can quickly change under the influence of a mentoring parent or teacher whose infectious enthusiasm can kindle in you a lifelong love of birds and wildlife. Sometimes the initial spark comes with that first glimpse through a good set of borrowed binoculars. Quality optics can bring to life the subtle hues, iridescence and dazzling colors you otherwise get to see only in bird book photos. If you’re a beginner, getting the hang of spotting, identifying, and snapping

The American goldfinch, above, is a familiar sight at backyard feeders. While common near forest fringes, the red-breasted nuthatch, right, is more often heard than seen. Don Willott photos of birds takes a little practice — but here are a few tips to help you hone those skills. Get a good field guide and suitable binoculars This is equipment you’ll want to have right from the start. A field guide will help you identify birds and learn what to look for locally. You’ll also want a good pair of binoculars. Good birding binoculars can be a little pricy, but they’re worth it. They should offer at least 7x or 8x magnification and be easy to focus. Try them out at a local birding store to see what suits your needs.

You can also find a helpful guide at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website, www:birds.cornell.edu/ allaboutbirds/gear/binoc Learn the species common to your area Identifying birds gets a lot easier if you know which ones you’re most likely to see. It can vary with habitat, season and region. A local checklist helps you narrow down the possibilities. Kitsap Audubon offers a checklist online at www.kitsapaudubon.org that provides a seasonal guide to the birds you’re likely to see in Kitsap County. Make careful observations, take notes When you spot a bird,

make mental notes about its size, color patterns, behavior and type of habitat. Once the bird has flown away, jot down these mental notes before you check your field guide. You’ll have time to search your field guide later, armed with detailed notes to aid identification. You can also learn more about each species from such online resources as the National Audubon Society website: www.birds.audubon.org/ birdid. Add a bird feeder or bird-friendly plants to your backyard You’ll want to explore all the natural areas in your region for different types of birds, but your backyard

can also be a great place to sharpen your skills and become familiar with the birds in your own neighborhood. Join other birders Getting out in the field with experienced birders is one of the best and most enjoyable ways to build your birding skills. Kitsap Audubon offers monthly field trips to local birding
