Lea Hill residents voice concerns about speeding, safety By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com
On Feb. 2, 2011, a fiery, single-car accident near 320th and 116th Place on Lea Hill killed Chengjing “Julie” Tan, 17, a Green River College Community student from China.
Then, just shy of three years later, on Feb. 12, 2014, GRCC student, Zhenyu Yang, died on the same stretch of road, in another single-car accident. A fellow passenger, Weihao Zu, sustained serious injuries. About both accidents, police
say, drivers Ying “Tim” Xie and Qiang Lu, respectively, were clearly speeding, Indeed, Auburn Assistant Police Chief Bill Pierson said last week, not only was Lu speeding, but physical evidence at the scene indicated that he was moving well
above 100 miles per hour when he went airborne, smashed into two power poles, spun and flung his two back-seat passengers to their bloody fates. For such an undulating stretch of road, residents say, speed like that, three times the posted speed
limit, is light years beyond stupid. Fed up, eager for a solution, more than 75 residents met with Auburn officials at Wesley Homes on Lea Hill last Thursday to talk and work out solutions. [ more speeding page 3 ]

anne Guier, should give the City relief from its mounting legal fees by locking in municipal legal services for a year at a fixed price. “Basically, what [the council] wants to do is make it on a one-year contract, so it can be renewed each year,” Guier said. “They want someone who is more diverse also, as far as municipal issues go. And it will ease the process of billing.” [ more PACIFIC page 3 ]

When Wolf Kotenberg needs the Hyde Shuttle van, as he did last Tuesday morning, it is there in front of MultiCare Auburn Medical Center. And when driver Mike Saftich spots Kotenberg there in his wheelchair, he hustles from the van and rolls him onto the lift. Once he’s
got him secured inside, it’s a quick ride to his home near Dick Scobee Elementary School. By now, Kotenberg, in treatment at MAMC to save his left leg from diabetes, says the free service “is my lifeline.” Senior Services, a nonprofit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington [ more SERVICE page 2 ]
