Old Town Dock
Construction begins Monday on public restrooms, crosswalk improvements Posted online Tues., March 11 By Todd Matthews, Editor Visitors to Tacoma's Old Town Dock will soon notice contractors working on more improvements to the recently renovated 141-year-old pier. City of Tacoma officials announced this week construction will begin Monday on a project that includes two new public restrooms, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, a rain garden, native plant landscaping and irrigation, and public art. Work is expected to last until summer. Drivers in the area should be aware the turning lane from westbound Ruston Way onto McCarver Street will be periodically closed, resulting in westbound access to Old Town from Schuster Parkway available via North 30th Street. Ruston Way through traffic will remain open at all times. In January, Tacoma City Council awarded a $262,533.40 contract to Olympia, Wash.-based Rod McConkey Construction for the project. The City set a project budget of approximately $260,000 using bond funds and began to solicit bids in November. A pre-bid meeting was held on Dec. 3. The deadline to submit bids expired on Dec. 17. Ten contractors submitted bids for the project: Nordland Construction NW (Nordland, Wash.) — $262,000; Bershauer Construction, Inc. (Olympia, Wash.) — $237,609; Lincoln Construction, Inc. (Spanaway, Wash.) — $242,905; Westmark Construction (Tacoma, Wash.) — $336,691; Rod McConkey Construction, LLC (Olympia, Wash.) — $218,777.83; T Miller Construction (Auburn, Wash.) — $303,700; Pease & Sons, Inc. $12M contract would consolidate Tacoma's parking operations Posted online Mon., March 10 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma is seeking bids from contractors interested in managing its public parking operations, according to a legal notice published this week in the Tacoma Daily Index. Currently, the City of Tacoma has one contract with Republic Parking NW to manage its off-street parking operations, which include 1,700 parking stalls in six garages, and 216 parking stalls in three surface lots, and a separate contract with Xerox, Inc. for its on-street parking operations, which includes 2,200 parking stalls located within the downtown parking enforcement area. Of that total, 1,800 spots are metered using approximately 160 Parkeon Strada pay stations. According to the legal notice and request for proposals, the City plans to consolidate those operations to a single primary vendor under a six-year, $12-million contract. The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department will continue to oversee the parking facilities and the operating company awarded the contract. The parking garages earned the City of Tacoma approximately $2.2 million in gross revenue in 2013; approximately $1.6 million $231,355; Jody Miller Construction (Tacoma, Wash.) — $281,000; and Pease Construction (Lakewood, Wash.) — $249,750. Tacoma's once-crumbling and shuttered Old Town Dock, located at 2200 Ruston Way, was closed to the public in the summer of 2008 for a variety of safety
in gross revenue in 2012; and approximately $1.65 million in gross revenue in 2011. The onstreet pay stations earned the City of Tacoma $970,524 in gross revenue in 2013; $962,751 in gross revenue in 2012; and $897,968 in gross revenue in 2011. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Tues., April 8. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. reasons, including a deteriorating deck and structural deficiencies. The dock re-opened last May following a $2.3 million renovation. Tacoma Mall Macy's fundraiser could net $250K for Point Defiance Park Posted online Fri., March 7 Tacoma's Point Defiance Park has been selected for "Heart Your Park," a program in partnership with Macy's department stores and the National Recreation and Park Association that aims to raise awareness and dollars for local parks across the country. From March 7 to March 31, customers at Macy's Tacoma Mall can donate $1 or more at the register to benefit Point Defiance Park. To further spread the love, Macy's will match
the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 in total. Donations will be administered through the Greater Metro Parks Foundation to support the operations and care of the 702-acre park, which serves more than three-million visitors annually. "The love for Point Defiance Park extends well-beyond the boundaries of Tacoma," said Metro Parks Tacoma Executive Director Jack Wilson. "Metro Parks appreciates the part-
nership between Macy's at Tacoma Mall, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the Greater Metro Parks Foundation to create this opportunity for the community to see its donations matched dollar for dollar this spring. Through this wonderful program and donations by Macy's customers, we are excited about the increased awareness and additional funding to support this regional treasure. This park is a great asset to the community, and we greatly appreciate Macy's support."
