On an island where fleece and muck boots predominate as everyday apparel, it’s hard not to be startled when you first spot two women decked out in false eyelashes, corsets, taffeta skirts and cocktail hats adorned with ribbons and marabou. And that’s before they turn around and you notice they are also sporting wings. But over the course of the past few years, residents of Vashon have become accustomed to the outlandish costumes worn by Jennifer Sutherland and Tami Brockway Joyce, and to the cheerful music they seem to make everywhere they go. Joyce and Sutherland — also known by their character names Klahowya and Kalakala — have a singing telegram company, the Washington State Fairies, that has been in business since 2010. both say they are ready to go door-to door to delight unsuspecting recipients with made-to-order musical messages. Joyce and Sutherland expect to make at least 20 surprise Valentine’s Day visits in all.
As community interest grows in the potential purchase of the K2 building by a marijuana company, King County has proposed an amendment to its comprehensive plan that would allow marijuana growing and processing at the property. County representatives will take comments on the proposed amendment at a public meeting on Vashon next Wednesday. The amendment will be considered by the King County Council as soon as next month. “We want to go to the community and ask what their thoughts are … and see what kind of information we get back,” said Lisa Verner, the legislative coordinator for the county’s Department of Permitting and Environmental Review (DPER). “That will help us tailor the language we then propose to the council.” Meanwhile, Bakkhos Holding, the company that is close to purchasing the K2 building, is inviting islanders to attend its own public meeting on Vashon this week. At the meeting, scheduled for this Thursday, Bakkhos representatives will discuss their plans to grow marijuana and make Edipure-brand edible pot products at the K2 building, as well as answer questions and hear comments or concerns, said Dan Anglin, a spokesman for the company. Bakkhos is under contract to purchase the building, according to Anglin, but has not yet closed on it. Anglin said the company wanted a chance to talk to islanders

Investigators unable to find proof of profiling after spring incident Sheriff’s office concludes racial profiling investigation of two deputies By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
A King County Sheriff’s Office investigation into alleged racial profiling on the part of two Vashon deputies has found insufficient evidence to prove or disprove a grievance filed by an African American man last spring.
Recently released documents from the investigation show that while the complainant believes deputies treated him harshly because of his race when they were responding to a call about his presence at Jensen Point, the deputies involved say they thought their interaction with the man went well. One deputy, in fact, reported that he had wished at the time that a recruit had been present to see how good contacts with the public are made. With accounts from both sides conflicting, authorities said they looked for other individuals who had first-hand knowledge
of the incident but found no one, leading to the official finding of “non-sustained.” “We conducted interviews of everyone that was involved,” Sheriff John Urquhart said in a recent email to The Beachcomber. “Then we looked for independent witnesses to the incident. We found none. The end result was a non-sustained finding.” Last May, Kenneth Richard, an employee with a Seattle company that contracts with the post office, filed the grievance with the the sheriff’s office shortly after deputies spoke with him at the beachfront park in Burton. At the time, Richard said, his job
required that he bring the island’s mail over in the morning and take the outgoing mail off the island at the end of the day, giving him free afternoons that he often used to study in his truck at the park. But on May 21, he said, deputies approached him about his presence there and told him that some of the girls on the crew team were intimidated by his presence. Richard reported then that the deputies dealt with him in an aggressive manner, asked him several times if he had a gun in the truck SEE INVESTIGATION, 28

County purchases large swath at Shinglemill

The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) has purchased a 67-acre property at Shinglemill Creek, preserving a piece of land that includes salmon habitat, mixed forest and one of the most popular hiking trails on the island. The property, which the county closed on last week, will be added to the 108-acre Shinglemill Creek preserve, which is managed by King County, the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust and the Vashon Park District. DNRP purchased the property for $240,000 from the county’s Road Services Division, which has owned it for years and allowed trail building and conservation projects there, said Greg Rabourn, Vashon’s basin steward for King County. The property begins at Cedarhurst Road near Fern Cove and stretches south, encompassing 800 feet of creek. In 2009, the land trust built a now-popular trail at the site,

While Rabourn was unsure why the roads division owned the piece of land in the first place, he said the 67 acres was up for surplus and could have been purchased by a private party had DNRP been unable to buy it. “It could have potentially gone away,” Rabourn said. “It could have been a step in the wrong direction.” Funds for the purchase came from the King County parks levy and the county’s Conservation Futures Tax. Rabourn said the county, in partnership with the land trust, would continue conservation projects at the site, but the stream and forest are in fairly good health. “We’ll continue to steward it in the same way it’s been done,” he said. — Natalie Martin
3-car accident on highway sends 4 to hospital Four people were transported to a Seattle hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 5, after a three-car accident on Vashon Highway, according to George Brown, assistant chief at Vashon Island Fire and Rescue (VIFR). VIFR responded to the accident on Vashon Highway north of town at about 10 p.m. Brown said a vehicle traveling on the highway apparently sideswiped another vehicle, and one of those vehicles then hit a third car. Two of the vehicles had two passengers and one had just one passenger. Brown didn’t know the cause of the wreck. Four people involved in the crash were transported via ferry, one with serious

injuries and three with non-life-threatening injuries, Brown said. Last week he was unsure of their current conditions. VIFR put all its resources into responding to the accident. Brown said all four paid responders on duty at the time arrived at the scene, as well as four volunteers. One of the three ambulances that responded transferred a patient to a private ambulance in Seattle in order to return to the island. “It drained us,” he said. “We were out of folks and equipment.” — Natalie Martin

Island food bank to move its farm to town this spring By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
After three years of growing food on a plot of land in the southern reaches of Vashon, the food bank will soon move its farm to town. This move will enable more volunteers to help with the labor of growing large amounts of food and has fulfilled a longtime dream of the food bank staff, said Yvonne Pitrof, the food bank’s executive director. This change, finalized last week, happened because of two large pieces of support, Pitrof said. Norm Mathews, the owner of Vashon Thriftway, approached her last fall to see if the food bank would like to use the 4.5-acre property his company owns behind the IGA shopping center at the edge of town. While Mathews has been a supporter of the food bank over the years, Pitrof said this offer was exceptional. “It was certainly a welcome surprise,” she said. “It was really wonderful to have that invitation.” Additionally, The Seattle Foundation recently awarded the food bank a $30,00 grant, an award intended to increase people’s access to healthy food. With those funds in hand, Pitrof, Jenn Coe — the food bank farm and garden manager — and volunteers will be able to begin working the land Mathews offered. “This grant supports that move to the new farm, putting in the infrastructure, getting it going and

The agreement now in place allows the food bank to use the land without paying rent, but the food bank will pay for water and cover its own farm expenses, Pitrof said. The tasks ahead include testing and amending the soil, tilling the 2-acre area they intend to use and building a fence. With more volunteers, the food
bank will be able to produce more food, Coe said, and as much as she appreciated the land on Wax Orchard Road lent by Amy Greenburg and Chris Robinson, the location made it hard for people to get to. “I love the idea of being someplace in town that is really visible that people can walk to,” Coe said. “There is never a lack of things to do, and the more people we have,

the more food we can grow. We’ve not come close to hitting a limit.” Reached last week, Mathews gave a simple answer for why he offered the land. “Basically, I knew of a need and that’s why,” he said. His company, Mathews Co. LLC, purchased the land — a large, grassy field southwest of town — in 2012 for $475,000, according to the King County Assessor’s Office. He added that the food bank’s lease at the land is for five years and could be easily renewed after that or cancelled at any time by either party with 90 days notice. Mathews noted his company has no imminent plans for the acreage, and purchased it for possible future use. Half of it is zoned commercial, and half is zoned for multi-family housing. “It was just a good buy, and we thought there might be a future need,” he said. Looking ahead, Pitrof and Coe say there is a considerable amount of work to do. “It’s been fast and furious, and now we have to get a timeline together,” Pitrof said. “I am sure there will be little hurdles as we go, but it is an exciting move for us.” People interested in volunteering at the farm should contact Emily Scott at emily@vashonfoodbank. org or 463-6332 to get on the farm and garden email list.
West Seattle man who pled guilty to Vashon thefts is sentenced Sean Jeffery Jeardoe, 21, was sentenced in King County Superior Court last week to four years in prison and four years in community custody, an alternative program with many requirements, including substance abuse treatment. Jeardoe pled guilty last month to 14 felony charges, including several stemming from crimes on Vashon, where he broke into a home last fall and stole a safe with a gun in it and some jewelry. He also stole several backpacks and gym bags from the Jensen Point boathouse. Leslie Brown, a spokeswoman for the county Department of Public Defense, said Jeardoe received an alternative sentence called a DOSA (Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative), which the defense had requested because of his drug use. Brown noted that Jeardoe’s birth mother used drugs while she was pregnant with him and his birth family has a long history of drug addiction. “There’s a chance, with a DOSA sentence, that he’ll be able to change his life and thus end his criminal behavior,” Brown said. — Susan Riemer

Now’s the time to speak up about marijuana at K2
The island’s fingerprints are on the team’s playbook
Few things have gotten Vashon talking lately like the potential purchase of the K2 building by a marijuana company. Indeed, the transformation of the largest commercial property on Vashon into a facility for growing marijuana and producing pot-infused candy and other edibles would be a huge development on the island. On one hand, this legal marijuana company would make use of a large commercial building that has sat vacant for years. It could provide local jobs and could pump money into our local economy. And after all, Vashon Islanders voted overwhelmingly to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2012. There are reasonable concerns about how this company could change the face and feel of our small town. Whatever your opinion on pot at the K2 building, now is the time to speak up, as a county amendment that would allow pot to be grown and processed at K2, removing a major obstacle this company faces, will soon be considered by our county council. The amendment to the Vashon Town Plan portion of the King County Comprehensive Plan already has support on the council, as it was their original intention to allow marijuana uses at buildings zoned like K2, no matter the location. But a look at the 1996 Vashon Town Plan that established a special business district on the island shows that islanders were specific about what new uses they thought should be allowed in Vashon’s core. Of course the town plan’s creators didn’t include marijuana businesses on the list, as it was 1996. But a line from the town plan reads that one intent of the plan was to “direct gradual growth and infill development so that it best meets the needs of the community and does not over tax infrastructure. The intent is to seek ways to reinforce Vashon’s traditional small town values, character and structure.” We can’t help but wonder what would happen if the same public process around the town plan were carried out today and whether a similar committee would opt to include marijuana growing and processing as an allowed use at properties close to Vashon town. With little local government on Vashon, our town plan has been one way to give locals a say in what shapes the place we live. Perhaps this particular portion of the town plan is outdated, creating a technical barrier to something that would benefit — or at least not harm — our island. Or perhaps it’s a reason to think twice about allowing this large marijuana business to set up shop in the middle of the island. Either way, we don’t think a county ordinance passed last year should trump our town plan without some serious consideration by both islanders and county officials. King County is giving Vashon residents the chance to voice their views before this significant amendment goes through. Islanders are known for taking advantage of the public process, and we encourage them to do so next Wednesday at McMurray Middle School.
Vashon was consumed by the Seahawks over the past several weeks, just as much if not more so, than the rest of the region, nation, world and universe. It was a fascinating and enthralling, allencompassing vortex. Don’t pretend you didn’t notice. I did a pretty thorough poll of the island. Some were quick to discount it: didn’t care, hated football, didn’t have a television, barbaric sport, bad food, commercialism, rather be reading or gardening, yada yada yada. OK, but shut up already. We’re in the freaking Super Bowl, don’t you understand? But no, they didn’t, and they’d look at me with a pitying smile, and I’d look at them in exasperation and think maybe I should slam them to the turf like Kam Chancellor. And then I’d catch myself clenching my teeth, my thighs bulging to extraordinary skittles-fed Beast Mode size, and I’d breathe and relax and return to my body. But I don’t want to be relaxed in my body. I want to be Richard Sherman, with every bit of his bluster. One day I’m at the dump doing recycling, and I’m really in the zone, 16 bags of mixed paper emptied — not dumped — in three trips. I’m weaving, I’m bobbing, totally efficient in my glass bottles work, leaning the leaking bin up to my chest, deftly tossing 64 pieces into the bin. The guy next to me compliments my technique, and I scream: “I’m the best recycler on Cemetery Road! Don’t you EVER talk about ME!” He backs away, and I realize I should never respond to recycling comments without a couple minutes to cool down. It’s still too hot to touch. It was insane. Not just that we won, but the whole up-swelling of … what was that? I want to somehow harness and bottle that crazy collective energy for the good of

I grew up in Minnesota, endured four badly lost Super Bowls and have had an NFL inferiority complex chip on my shoulder for 41 years. For me, it’s personal. But I also saw a lot of unexpected fervor among spiritually minded, non-materialistic, enlightened island elders. Places on Vashon that are typically calm pools of positive feng shui were transformed by improvised 12th Man banners made of massive blue tarps. Island Yoga apparently supplied blue and green face paint before class. Just a rumor. My neighborhood felt particularly frenzied — everyone in my house was electric with excitement, except for the other people who live there with me. We don’t really have a neighborhood in the woods, per se, but I felt like if I did have neighbors, we would have totally watched it together. I drove past the theater an hour before the game, with its 300-person tailgate party prior to the collective big-screen viewing. It was like a pack of well-organized, highly intelligent, rabid dogs. I honked, enviously imagining swearing and hotdogs and a safe context for small children to drink beer. They screamed, politely, and waved. Lest we discard Vashon’s version of Seahawks mania as typical mass-culture, pro-sports knuckleheadedness, I think it bears some philosophical consideration. There are powerful messages in there, somewhere, about who we truly are, and what we’re capable of, about a sense of community, joy, love, peace, brotherhood and how to truly humiliate your opponent — lots of good stuff. Some messages, I think, may be subliminal, unexpected and out of context. Like me writing “No

I say we take it all, every bit of what the Seahawks did, and let it inspire us: Have wildly self-confident bravado (Richard Sherman), let your action do the talking (Marshawn Lynch), be uncompromisingly positive and optimistic (Coach Pete Carroll), praise a higher power, your mom, the community, the rest of the team, and, if it works, speak exclusively in cryptic clichés (Russell Wilson). The future looks funny from here, with unpredictable twists and turns Well, it’s that time of year again, time when I acquire another growth ring and get one step closer to that dreaded first piece of mail from AARP. It’s also that time when I make my predictions for upcoming events around the world. Not many people are aware, but I am something of a Nostradamus of the Northwest. I inherited this rare gift from my mother who had the astounding ability to see into the future — yet oddly enough she always called me her little surprise. I understand if there are some skeptics out there, but I do have a proven track record. For instance, I was way ahead of everybody when I predicted the Mariners would be in the Super Bowl. I also predicted the gluten-free craze without even knowing what the hell a gluten was. And if it weren’t for my advice, people would be buying Apple products named pod, pad and phone. And much like the Oracle of Omaha, I offer pearls of financial advice. Take it from me, don’t sell your AOL stock because dial-up modems are poised for a huge comeback; that goes double for Beanie Babies and the Cornballer. If you’re worried about how to invest your retirement funds, I have two words for you, “Franklin Mint.” However, I’m not too proud to admit I’ve had a few minor miscalculations. One
HUMOR By CHRIS AUSTIN of my visions went awry, and I ended up buying tickets for the Sushi Olympics. Another time I picked the right year that pot would become legal but the wrong state. (The police have predicted I will be picking up roadside garbage.) The Weight Watchers’ Organ Meat Only diet did not do as well as I predicted, and I was completely surprised to hear Lindsay Lohan failed to complete her court-ordered rehab. Seriously, who saw that coming? But with my latest prodigious prognostications, I can tell you the future will hold a mixed bag of ups and downs. We will finally get our long-promised flying cars, but the TSA will be in our garage. Detroit gets back on its feet after years of aid from Africa, and Big Fossil Fuel embraces solar energy, buys the sun and charges by the photon. Also, the Walt Disney Company will become so pervasive that every child will have happy memories and Disney will own them. Society will finally get its priorities
straight, so while movies and athletics will continue to inspire, actors and athletes will lead ordinary lives. The lucrative endorsements, fawning groupies and prying paparazzi will only be a concern for those that make a difference in the world like Jonas Salk, Nelson Mandela and whoever invented the helmet that holds beer cans. On the cultural scene, hipsters will run out of things to do ironically, which is ironic, tattoos will be flesh colored, and what was once known as the “plumber’s bum” will be called the male cleavage. As for fashion-driven young adults, they will be sporting the haircut that says business in the front and party in the back, the mullet. Hip-hugging bell bottoms are back too. This sartorial eye candy will be good for the guys, but the trousers will be unisex, which will be bad for the gals. Speaking of young adults, the GOP will continue to try and entice this important demographic, so expect to see Chris Christie with a mullet and hip-hugging bell bottoms, which will be bad for everybody. Also on the political front, Newt Gingrich will carry on his fight for the Defense of Divorce Act, and the income gap continues to grow with the 1-percenters becoming just one person. In the future, the United States will combat truculent regimes with a visit

Fees for elective classes raise concerns I just got a bill for my son’s Vashon High School classes. No joke. After 10 years of homeschooling on my own dime, donating to the annual school auction, voting for the new high school and facing another levy vote, I’m staring at a bill for my son’s theater, woodworking and Japanese classes. Am I the only one surprised? Charging money for classes concerns me greatly. Public schools seek to equalize existing inequalities in a community by offering equal education to all. Class fees serve to further divide the kids into the haves and the have-nots if they must
choose their classes based upon economic forces. When I was 14, if I had been faced with choosing a language class with a fee and one without, I’d have simply chosen the free class. Like most kids living under the poverty line, we were broke, I knew it, and I would never bring home one more bill for my parents to face. How unfair to put kids of struggling families in this position. If we can’t afford to offer a class free of charge, then it shouldn’t be offered. This way, we all have a stake in finding a solution for everyone. If we put it on the table — the option of creating a two-class public school system — we lose the heart and soul of public education. Truly, only those who are struggling will be hurt. — March Twisdale

Mainstream media is in for a few surprises as well. An autopsy will reveal that Donald Trump’s hair was actually a parasitic rodent. (This is the second such life-sucking mammal discovered by scientists, the first being Congress). For news hounds, I can tell you that sooner than you think, the public will trust the Onion and Fox News equally. And having solved every conceivable crime, “Law and Order” will be finally cancelled. Kanye West will continue to annoy the entire world. In the area of science, germaphobia will become so universal that the handshake will be replaced by twerking. Big Tobacco will pinky-swear their GMO cigarettes are safe for anyone over 12, and Monsanto will report that one of its agro-scientists was mauled by an ear of corn. My son and his wife really want to buy a home and I’d like to help them. They asked me if I could be a co-signer for their mortgage and, of course, I said yes. It just means they combine my credit score with theirs to get a good loan, doesn’t it? I’m happy to do it but not sure what it really means.
I’m glad you asked before you sign any documents. It’s very important that people know exactly what they’re signing up for. You will be equally responsible for the mortgage should your son and daughter-in-law be unable to make the payments. As a co-signer you are guaranteeing the loan. If, let’s say, your son loses his job and they can’t make the mortgage payment on just your daughter-in-law’s income, you would have to make those payments. I’m not a financial advisor or a loan officer, but I would recommend that you have a talk with the lender involved and read through your documents carefully before you sign anything. If you aren’t acquainted with legal documents it would be money well spent to have an attorney review everything and explain your responsibilities. It may be that you will feel comfortable enough to go ahead with the co-signing of the loan but it’s best to do so when you really understand your financial exposure. This isn’t to cast doubts on your son or his wife. It very well may be a great idea to step in and help them purchase a home. Just be clear about it all before you sign anything. Keep in mind that you can also give them a gift of money. That’s legal and can often be free of tax implications for either party if done correctly. That added cash can make their down payment larger which may get them a better interest rate. It will also lower their monthly payments and that might make all the difference as to whether they can afford to carry the mortgage on their own. Do some exploring and talk it over with trusted advisors.

Online auction will benefit VCC Vashon Community Care’s 14th Labor of Love online auction will start at noon today, Feb. 12. All proceeds will help fund resident activities and trips throughout the year. As part of this island tradition begun 16 years ago, islanders can bid on hundreds of items and services made or performed by other islanders. A wide range of items, services and experiences are available to bid on, including being a distiller for a day, having a pet’s portrait painted by island artist Jayne Quig, going on an overnight cruise to Blake

Island on a 44-foot Trimaran sailboat, gardening chores, one homemade pie a month for six months and a keg of Cliff’s Beer. The care center did not hold the Labor of Love last year because it was focused on refinancing the building, said Linda Milovsoroff, the center’s director of development. The last auction, in 2012, brought in $14,000 she said, and the goal for this year is $18,000. Labor of Love will run for two weeks, ending at noon Wednesday, Feb. 26. Musicians sing for love and money on Valentine’s Day Special event will raise funds for RISK By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
This Valentine’s Day more than 40 local singers will pair up to croon about love at 8 p.m. at the Red Bicycle. And in the best tradition of the heart, all funds raised will benefit the Rock Island String Kollective (RISK), an organization that provides musical instruments and lessons for lowincome children. Pete Welch and Allison Shirk, the masterminds behind Vashon Events, launched Love Duets last year to great success. It returns this year to the delight of islanders and singers alike, not to mention musicians Kim Thal (violin and guitar) and Shane Jewell (multiple string instruments) who over three years ago voluntarily created RISK, a fiddle, folk and rock string orchestra for musicians ages 8 and onwards. On a gray morning last November, RISK had a chance to show their peers what they had learned through the program. The cafeteria at Chautuaqua Elementary School buzzed with the sound of excited students sitting cross-legged on the floor waiting to hear their fellow students serenade them with tunes from groups like the Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Klezmer, the rhythmic dance music of eastern Europe. Ten weeks earlier, the 10 performers with five guitars and five violins had never touched an instrument. But after rehearsing twice a week before

Next up came the original RISK group, a mix of ages and string instruments including guitar, violin, viola, harp, bass, mandolin, ukulele, banjo and fiddle led by Shane Jewell and Kim Thal. At Jewell’s persuasive instruction, the audience clapped their hands first on their thighs and then together in percussive unison as RISK fired up the room with their infectious beats. Jewell then donned a washboard for a Cajun favorite and concluded
the show with a rendition of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, asking the crowd to join in the singing. Smiles broke out on the faces of students and teachers, with toes tapping and bodies swaying. Thal and Jewell started RISK as a way to keep music alive for students whose schedules get overcrowded when they enter high school. “We wanted to bring musicians of all ages and levels together socially,” Thal said, “and include professionals like Ian Moore to join in. We thought this might be a way students could continue to play.”
And play they do, every Tuesday after school at the Minglement. Professional violinist Sarah Perlman joins Thal to initiate a second RISK program for students at Chautauqua, coaching them on violin and guitar Tuesday and Thursday mornings for 40 minutes before school. “Many of these kids have never had any exposure to playing an instrument and in some cases, the kids have special needs,” Thal said. “We also try to target lowerincome families for whom private lessons would be out of the question.” “We think kids learn better in a group,” added Perlman. “RISK is not a school program — Chautauqua doesn’t have a string program — but the school lets us use the music room and instruments.” Perlman credits Jody Metzger, principal of Chautuaqua, and Samantha Herman, the school’s music teacher, as two key people who helped make this program possible. For Welch and Shirk, targeting RISK as a Vashon Events fundraiser became a simple, selfish choice. “By supporting young musicians, we ensure that we are developing and nurturing our next generation of musicians to perform at Vashon events,” Welch and Shirk said in an email, noting that string instruments are expensive and children move through violin sizes so quickly that it’s necessary for them to rent them. “Without the scholarship fund, lowincome kids wouldn’t be able to afford to play these instruments. ... This is really a win-win situation all around, and we are proud to be a part of it,” he said.

Workshop to explore American Buddhism Tibetan teacher, scholar, former physician and author Karl Brunnholzl will lead a one-day workshop titled “American Buddhism: A Religion or a Science of Mind” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Joan Hanna’s Barn. At 2,500 years old and counting, the Buddhist path is nothing new, but for those in the western world, it is a relative newcomer to our culture as a more or less 50-year-old phenomenon. Before the beat generation in the mid1950s took an interest in Zen, Buddhism was a subject mostly relegated to a school’s department of religion or maybe history. Outside of ethnic enclaves, western practioners were few and far between, a fringe group not readily understood. Today Buddhism — and its offshoot mindfulness — is a familiar topic mainstreamed by books and movies, Buddhist teachers and organizations, finding its way into classrooms, boardrooms and the medical and psychological fields, among others. But, according to Brunnholzl, it is also still commonly misunderstood. Brunnholzl, author of “The Heart Attack Sutra,” among other titles, will come to Vashon to shed some light on the topic, exploring what Buddhism in America means today, how an ancient Asian wisdom can be useful in western modern-day life and how Buddhism can

Some dos and don’ts for planning an island wedding
Tips for tying the knot on Vashon By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
There’s nothing like saying your vows on Vashon, a place full of beauty, romance and rural charm. But planning an event at a place surrounded by water can present some challenges as well. Whether your wedding is a big garden gala or a small ceremony by the water, consider a few dos and don’ts for your island celebration. Do shop and hire locally when you can. Local merchants have a lot to offer, and it feels good to support Vashon’s small businesses. It’s much more convenient to work with locals, and in most cases their prices are comparable or even better than those found in Seattle. There’s no reason not to order a cake, hire a photographer, choose a musician or rent tables and chairs on Vashon. Consider looking off-island or online when you’re looking for a particular deal, want to order in bulk or have special preferences that can’t be found on Vashon. Don’t turn to Seattle wedding magazines or those comprehensive wedding websites like The Knot to find wedding resources on Vashon. They won’t be listed. Check in with the local chamber of commerce for island wedding resources. And oftentimes the best way to connect with vendors on Vashon is word of mouth. If you live on the island, ask your friends and acquaintances if they know anyone who caters, does wedding-day hair, designs invitations, etc. If you don’t live on Vashon, ask merchants you’ve already signed with to connect you with others, or find someone who has been married on the island and make them your new best friend. Do book any lodging required for your wedding as soon as possible, especially if you’re planning a summer wedding. There are no hotels on Vashon, so housing
family, friends and wedding attendants on the island can be a challenge. Vacation rentals and B&Bs book up fast, and many places only take week-long or multi-day reservations in the summer, making options limited. Check out VRBO.com, www.airbnb.com and www.vashonchamber.com to find the perfect spots for your guests. Don’t forget Vashon has no big box stores, so some wedding items simply won’t be available on the island. Plan ahead for the shopping or ordering you’ll have to do off-island, and remember Vashon stores also have limited hours for picking up those last-minute things. It shouldn’t present a problem if you think ahead. Do keep in mind that many of your guests won’t be familiar with the ferry system. Consider including a small card in each invitation that lists suggested ferry times and reminds guests to arrive at the ferry early. Make sure out-of-town guests understand which ferry route they are taking so they don’t find themselves getting on the boat in downtown Seattle or driving off the ferry at Southworth. Don’t take your wedding too seriously. Vashon is a great setting for a tasteful but relaxed celebration. Consider holding your wedding in a barn, at a public park or at the beach. Ditch the heels for flip flops, have a backyard barbecue for your rehearsal dinner or consider adding a fun element to your ceremony, such as having the bride and groom arrive in kayaks. And don’t let unexpected circumstances — rain, heat or even ferry delays — ruin your day. Do take advantage of the helpful Vashon community, especially if you live on the island. As addressed earlier, friends and acquaintances can point you to vendors who often operate by word of mouth. And many people are

eager to help with arrangements, offer a hand with projects and even lend items you would otherwise have to purchase or rent. Do encourage your off-island guests to stay a while on Vashon. There’s plenty to do and see on Vashon, so they can easily make the wedding trek into a day trip or weekend trip. If you live on Vashon, it’s a chance for them to see your home, and if you don’t, it’s still a fun mini-vacation. A destination wedding in Burton Couple coordinated their dream wedding from afar By SARAH LOW Staff Writer
Baltimore resident Emily Haroz recently realized a lifelong dream when she was married on Vashon Island. Though born and raised on the East Coast, in the summer of 2012, Haroz was married on the lawn of her family’s summer home, overlooking the waters of Quartermaster Harbor. Haroz’s mother, islander Elizabeth “Boo” Edmunds, grew up in Seattle and spent summers on Vashon with her family. When Edmunds had her own family, she continued the summer tradition, even though they lived in Boston. “I loved Vashon so much growing up,” Haroz said, recalling her summers on the island. “It was so important to me that I wouldn’t invite any friends to come and spend time here with us. I didn’t want anyone else to have it.” Eventually Haroz did find someone she wanted to share the island with — her boyfriend, Jacob Taylor, and she took him on a trip to Vashon one summer. Taylor not only fell in love with Haroz but the island as well, and he proposed two months later. Though choosing Vashon for the location of their wedding seemed a given, Haroz and Taylor weren’t sure they’d be able to pull it off, as they’d have to plan and make arrangements from where they lived in Baltimore. Haroz’s mother, however, began to ask around for ideas on how to get things done through her island friends, and the community responded, providing a network of resources that would make Haroz’s dream wedding possible. The couple decided to keep their ceremony and reception simple, taking on do-it-yourself projects and using as much local fare as possible. The location was the easy part, as Haroz’s family still owned a summer house in Burton with a large lawn where the ceremony could be held by the water. The two were wed by rabbi — Taylor is Jewish — and made their own

The couple handed out jam made with Vashon blackberries. chuppah out of island driftwood. Certain elements for the day were handled by off-island businesses. Seattle-based Skillet took care of the catering with its mobile trailer. Tents, restrooms and the band for the reception also came from off-island. But everything else was purely Vashon. Using the Burton Coffee Stand’s message board like a wedding coordinator’s command center, Haroz and Edmunds managed to take care of every detail. Instead of a cake, the couple decided to use Vashon’s abundant blackberries for cobbler and pies, and they made blackberry jam to give as favors to their guests. Friends and family — and even kids who’d seen the event take shape via the coffee stand — picked the berries all summer, and they were stored at Harbor Mercantile. Haroz found her photographer when Edmunds posted a message at the coffee stand and multiple people responded. And Sarah Perlman, formerly of the popular island music duo RedPerl, provided music for the ceremony, a connection that was once again made through the coffee stand.

Married beneath a Vashon lighthouse A Point Robinson wedding makes for a memorable day

I never dreamed of my wedding day as a girl. I never talked about wedding colors with friends or married my stuffed animals. In adulthood I didn’t give weddings much thought either, and certainly never pinned about them on Pinterest. So when my boyfriend Nick got down on one knee last year, I knew I wanted to get married, but I had no idea what that wedding would look like. The two of us considered all sorts of settings for our big day. There were elaborate gardens, country clubs with water views, even barns that rented out for weddings. But none of those places felt like us — not to mention they usually charged an arm and a leg. We soon realized that the perfect spot for our nuptials was right on Vashon, a place I already lived and a place we’d both fallen in love with since I began working at The Beachcomber three years before. Why not say “I do� at a beach where we’d strolled the shore many times picking up beach glass, where we’d poked starfish during the low tide festival and where we knew the keeper of the lighthouse personally? Our wedding at Point Robinson was like nothing I could have dreamed up as a girl. On a mercifully sunny day last August, we said our vows in front of a sparkling blue Puget Sound, beneath a driftwood arch assembled by our friends. We did little decorating for the event, as Point Robinson is full of natural beauty. A verdant hillside was the backdrop for the day, and the events unfolded on a lawn surrounded by driftwood and rustling beach grass, all set off by a striking red and white 1915 lighthouse. After the ceremony, our friends and family enjoyed the beach and climbed to the top of the lighthouse. Dinner was a simple but elegant spread, the main dish being sockeye salmon my husband’s uncle caught in Alaska, prepared by a caterer his family knew. For drinks, we offered Vashon-made Cliff’s Beer and wine we picked up at the local grocery store. A large vanilla cake from Snapdragon was topped by a hand-painted bride and groom, and small

berry and apple tarts were served. As the evening waned, I threw my bouquet from the top of the lighthouse and guests took to the dance floor — a large, homemade floor we borrowed from a generous neighbor and pieced together the night before. Our minister danced; so did my 89-year-old grandmother. Just when we thought the day could be no more lovely, the sun began to sink and melted into a colorful sunset, drawing those who weren’t still dancing down to the water. Nick and I stole away for a quiet moment together on the beach. The cliche exit by sparklers we had planned was ruined, of course, when half of our guests suddenly had to catch a ferry. We quickly distributed the sparklers anyway, and all had a laugh waving them around on the lawn. One of my favorite moments of the night came during the toasts, when Captain Joe Wubbold, who’d helped us for months with our wedding arrangements, gave what he called a captain’s blessing. He said he hoped the aids to navigating our new life together would be “on station and watching properly,� providing good direction just like the working lighthouse before us.

Where to wed?
Vashon is full of venues With scenic parks, lovely churches and large rental estates, Vashon has a wide range of venues for couples tying the knot and options to fit every budget. Use this non-exclusive list as a starting point for exploring all the unique locations the island has to offer. Parks showcase the best of Vashon’s beauty and can be more affordable that other rental options. Point Robinson Park, with a lighthouse and views of the water and Mount Rainier, is a popular choice. West-facing Lisabeula Park also has a large lawn with a view of the sound, and it gets evening sun. Winghaven Park is a lovely spot for a smaller, more intimate ceremony. Park weddings can be tricky to plan, but many caterers can work out of mobile kitchens, and generators and amenities such as extra restrooms can be brought in as well. Several of Vashon’s churches can be booked for weddings, and many offer kitchens and reception halls as well. Burton Community Church on Quartermaster Harbor and Havurat Ee Shalom on the west side of the island have historic buildings that provide the perfect

settings for a quaint island ceremony. Other churches offer larger, more modern worship halls. For a rural or rustic feel, consider renting out an island farm venue such as the Old Chaser Farm or the locally famous Jesus Barn Farm. Madrona Meadows Bed & Barn also offers a large barn tucked away in the woods. Vashon is known for its beautiful beaches, and several waterfront locations can be rented as wedding venues. Camp Burton offers a large shoreside lawn as well as an indoor event hall and kitchen facilities. KVI Beach House overlooks the beach and sleeps about a dozen people, and at Villa Vashon guests can watch the ferry come and go at a convenient north-end location that’s right on the water. Inland weddings can be just as beautiful, so consider the wooded AYH Ranch Hostel, where guests can also stay and camp for the night, or the new Froggsong Gardens (featured at right). If all else fails, ask that island friend or neighbor if you can hold your event on their large lawn or beach house. You may be surprised by the answer.
Couples going all out for their Vashon wedding might consider Froggsong Gardens, a 4-acre garden and estate that opened this year for wedding rentals. Froggsong is the private estate of islanders Cindy and Steve Stockett, who have spent years creating and tending to an elaborate garden that includes perennial and ornamental gardens, a long rose pergola, multiple ponds, a knot garden, cascading water features, a parterre and a stone ruin. Situated on a 16-acre property, Froggsong has been featured in several national magazines, is regularly visited by gardening clubs and was part of Vashon Allied Arts’ most recent garden tour. “The garden is extremely well known in garden circles and nationally,” Steve said. The Stocketts have hosted nonprofit events and galas at Froggsong and recently decided to open the property as a wedding rental that can accommodate up to 250 guests. The garden includes a 1,500-square-foot tiled patio and a 1,000-square-foot greenhouse, meaning guests can go indoors if necessary. Renters also have access to ample parking, buildings on the estate and a kitchen. With rental rates starting at

Wrestlers roll through sub-regionals By CHERYL PRUETT For The Beachcomber
The Vashon Pirate grapplers made an impressive statement, winning their sub-regional tournament by more than 100 points last Saturday at Bellevue Christian High School. The team sent 18 wrestlers into the first weekend of post-season playoffs, qualifying 15 for next weekend’s regional tournament in Castle Rock. Taking on all schools in the Nisqually League, the Pirates steamrolled their way past Eatonville, Bellevue Christian, Cascade Christian, Port Townsend and Chimacum. Eight Vashon wrestlers made it to the finals, with six crowned champions. Sophomore Chase Wickman had no competition for the day, thereby winning by default. Sophomore Shane Williams won his bout and took first place. Senior Trevor Figgins took first in the 138-pound weight class. Senior Shane Armstrong returned to action with the handicap of a heavily bandaged hand and still took first place. Senior Preston Morris’ opponent failed to wrestle in the final, so Morris took the championship by default. Senior Louis Jovanovich muscled his way through to a championship medal. Making the finals and taking second place were sophomore Clyde Pruett and senior Codi Williams. In this tournament, the top three in each bracket move on. If players lose the match for third and fourth place, their season is done. Coaches Anders and Per Lars Blomgren predicted a good outcome for the third- and fourth-place battles, noting that the Vashon squad has a history of performing well in that round. Indeed, each of the seven who were facing elimination all made it through.

Taking third place and moving on were sophomores Chester Pruett, Logan Nelson and Franklin Easton. Freshmen Bryce Hoisington and Cori Williams, junior Joe Coller and senior Ian McWhirter also took third in their weight classifications. Competing for Vashon and finishing fifth were Marquis Stendahl and Andrew Wittwer. Sophomore Hunter Stanley won a match in the tough 145-pound weight class and finished just out of the medals. Match of the day belonged to Chester Pruett, who faced his nemesis from Bellevue Christian in the brawl for third and fourth place. It was a nail-biting scrabble for the entire five minutes with several lead changes and a tight score throughout. The last time these two evenlymatched wrestlers faced each other, Pruett lost in overtime. The Pirate grapplers were lining the mat jumping up and down, and the Vashon crowd roared as Pruett got the win,
10-8, and punched his ticket for regionals. His mother got two new gray hairs. The coaches were exceptionally pleased with the team’s performance. “Embracing the battle and resiliency have been focal points for us all season,” said coach Anders Blomgren. “This showed today. But we’ve got to keep piling our dirt to make that mountain. Celebrate today. Then back to dig dirt, carry the bucket next week.” That’s the team’s mantra for this year: Dig dirt, carry the bucket. Firstyear wrestler McWhirter summed the day up best when he came up to his mom, flush with victory, dripping with sweat and grinning like the devil, “Mom, I’m going to regionals,” he said. — Cheryl Pruett is the mother of two Vashon wrestlers.

Basketball victories lead to new coaching record

The Vashon Pirate hoopsters went 2-0 last week with commanding victories over Bellevue Christian and Chimacum. On Tuesday, the Bellevue Christian Vikings made the trip to Vashon to take on the highly ranked Pirates. The game started well for Vashon, who scored quickly and played solid defense. Senior captain Owen Brenno turned in an impressive first quarter scoring 6. At the end of the first quarter, Vashon was up 17-10. Halfway through the second quarter, junior captain Jessie Norton came alive, getting more aggressive on offense and defense, highlighted by Norton ripping the ball from a Viking’s hands and going coast-to-coast for the lay-in. At the half, Vashon still had the lead, 31-21. In the third quarter, the Pirate offense came out firing on all cylinders. Norton continued to drive the lane with success, and overall Vashon’s offense was clicking. There was no shortage of highlights for the Pirates. Sophomore Sam Yates made a great play, grabbing the rebound off a missed free throw then sinking a corner 3. Junior Ian Stewart had the highlight of the period, nailing a shot while getting knocked down to beat the shot clock then making the free throw. Overall Vashon outscored Bellevue Christian 24-11 in the quarter. Vashon put the brakes on their scoring attack in the fourth quarter as head coach Andy Sears gave his backups some playing time. However, the Pirate defense did not let up, allowing only 8 points in the fourth and sealing the victory. The 66-40 domination gave Sears his 210th win, setting a new school record for overall victories by a head basketball coach. Sears has achieved this milestone in only 13 seasons while the previous record took 26 seasons to accumulate. Norton led the Vashon scoring with 16, followed by sophomore Noah Chee with 12 and Brenno with 11. On Friday, the Pirates made the long drive to Chimacum to take on the struggling Cowboys. The first quarter went just as expected, pure domination. Yates scored first for the Pirates with an inside bucket then added two 3-pointers to jump start Vashon’s offense. allowing only 4 points in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, Vashon was up 17-4. Chimacum’s offensive play improved greatly in the second quarter, but it was not enough to impose a threat on Vashon. Norton was taking over on offense in the second quarter, at one point making a shot over three defenders. At the half Vashon, was up big, 38-17. Things didn’t change much in the second half. Chimacum had been put in too big of a hole to recover. Norton continued to wreck the Cowboy defense, showing why he is one of the best offensive players in the league. In the fourth quarter, Chee made a spin move layup, leaving his defender lost in the paint. The final highlight of the night was turned in by sophomore Sean Delargie, when he knocked down a 3 pointer. In the end Vashon was victorious, winning by a score of 68-42. Norton again led the Pirates in scoring with an impressive 24 points, followed by Yates with 14. At press time, the Pirates had two regular season games left to play, one against Eatonville and one against rival Charles Wright. Pirates end week with a decisive victory Girls team nears the end of its regular season By GARY MEANS For The Beachcomber
The Pirate girls basketball team played twice last week, dropping a close game at home against the Bellevue Christian Vikings on Tuesday before winning on the road versus the Chimacum Cowboys on Friday. The Pirates played outstanding defense against the Vikings, which led to them trailing by only a single point at halftime, 18-17. Through most of the second half, the margin between the teams stayed small, and the score was tied with less than two minutes to play. The game turned when a Pirate miss on a 3-point opportunity was followed by a 3-point shot from the Vikings. Vashon narrowed the lead back to 1, but had to put the Vikings on the line to regain possession, ultimately losing 40-35 in a game that was closer than the final 5-point margin. Tianna Koenig and Siena Janetty added 4, while Natalie VanDevanter added 2 and rounded out the Pirate offense. “Our offense played with the most maturity we have had all season,� said coach Henry Porter after the game. “The girls were finding the open shooter, and we did a great job taking the shots from where we wanted to take them.� Vashon played Eatonville Tuesday for senior night after press time and are slated to finish the regular season against Charles Wright on Thursday.

before they attended the hearing on the county’s proposed amendment. “The closing of the sale of the building is really predicated by whether or not we can use it,” Anglin said. “In order to encourage support of our use, we feel it’s important to introduce ourselves to the community prior to the public meeting.” The proposed amendment, which was announced last Friday, stems from a conflict between a marijuana ordinance passed by the county council last year and the Vashon Town Plan, which is folded into the King County Comprehensive Plan. The ordinance, adopted in December, allows legal marijuana businesses to set up shop in parts of King County zoned as Community Business and Industrial. However, when businesses began to express interest in growing and processing pot on Vashon — particularly at the K2 building — officials with DPER realized that a special business district that Vashon’s Town Plan Committee created in 1996 would prevent marijuana business in much of the island’s core. The business district, which creates a zoning overlay in parts of Vashon town, Center and at the K2 building, has many permitted uses outlined by the creators of the 1996 town plan, but marijuana growing and processing are not included. So far the only companies to apply with the state for marijuana licenses inside the special business district have been ones interested in the K2 building. One company applied for a license using the address of the Vashon Athletic Club, but the club’s owner said the application is not legitimate. Verner said the county council wasn’t aware of the zoning conflict when it passed the December ordinance. Now in order to allow marijuana business in those parts of Vashon, she said, it has proposed amending the comprehensive plan to add those uses to the zoning overlay. The proposal would allow marijuana growing, processing and retail at properties zoned Community Business, and growing and processing at those zoned Industrial. “In my opinion, this is really going back to fully implement the intent of the council,” Verner said. Joe McDermott, Vashon’s representative on the King County Council agreed. He said he supports the proposal and believes it would have wide support on the council as well. “My goal from the beginning is to be consistent across the county in how we permit growing, production and retail operations and to not have special circumstances for any part of the county,” he said. “When we were doing the adoption of the ordinance, I was unaware of the special town overlay, so I do think it’s consistent to not prohibit it in the town overlay.” Officials at DPER said last month that a comprehensive plan amendment was possible, but that it would require a long process with ample opportunity for public feedback, likely taking up to a year to complete. The proposal announced Friday, however, will be forwarded to the county council by March 3 and could go up for vote as soon as late March. If passed, it would require final approval by County Executive Dow Constantine. Ty Peterson, a commercial product line manager at DPER who previously said the amendment could take a year, explained that such amendments have sometimes taken a year to be completed, but the coun-

ty council can act on proposals as quickly as it chooses. McDermott said that the timing for the amendment seems normal, especially considering that the council spent a significant amount of time on the marijuana ordinance it passed last year. “It’s still fresh in our minds,” he said. Jim Chan, DPER’s director of permitting, pointed out that the amendment is not the only hurdle preventing Bakkhos from carrying out its plans at K2. Since the company would also like to manufacture marijuana packaging products at the property, it would need to get the building rezoned from Community Business to Industrial. Anglin concurred, but said that he believes Bakkhos would have to get the building rezoned to make edible pot products at the site as well, as its process for infusing candy and other food products with marijuana is considered to be manufacturing. Chan said Vashon’s town plan is the only one in unincorporated King County, so Vashon is the only place where local zoning conflicts with the county’s December ordinance. Other cities in King County and across the state have passed local ordinances attempting to prohibit or limit marijuana business in their towns, something Vashon does not currently have the option to do, Chan said. Should the comprehensive plan amendment be approved, and should Bakkhos close on the K2 building and get it rezoned, the company will still be required to obtain marijuana growing and processing business permits from the state, as well as a Conditional Use Permit from the county. McDermott said he has heard from islanders who support Bakkhos’ plans on Vashon as well as those who have concerns. While he hasn’t taken a stance on the potential business at K2, he said he believes it is in the island’s and the county’s best interest to see K2 used again. “A productive use of the K2 facility, whether it’s the current proposal for a marijuana grow operation or something else, using the site productively is very much in the island’s best interest,” he said. Other islanders are attempting to organize conversation around the developments at the K2 property. Tim Johnson, president of the Vashon Maury Island Community Council, said the council was already planning to discuss marijuana at the K2 building at its next regular meeting, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24. “I hear a lot of people talking about it, and I’ve heard so many rumors it will make your head spin,” Johnson said. Johnson said he thought the community council could be a good place to gauge community sentiment about the issue, learn what questions islanders have and try to get answers. “Instead of people one-on-one talking all over about what they think, maybe we need to have a group conversation about what’s important, what do we know and what do we not know,” he said. Bill Moyer, executive director of the Backbone Campaign, is raising questions about potential contamination at the property, a former ski manufacturing site. Moyer said he is working to find out whether thorough environmental testing has been completed at the site. He said he is concerned that the environmental assessment previously performed by K2, which Bakkhos is relying on in its purchase, may not be adequate, and that potential contamination could pollute groundwater in
the future. Moyer said he and a small group of islanders are also exploring alternative uses for the site and possible funding sources for development there, should the sale to Bakkhos not go through. “It’s not that we’re hoping for contamination. … The most important thing is we are not failing to find out one way or the other in our one moment of leverage,” he said. On Monday night Moyer announced a public meeting for tonight, Wednesday, to discuss the issue with those interested. A representative of the K2 Corporation could not be reached for comment, and representatives from Cushman & Wakefield, the commercial real estate broker selling the K2 building, have not returned calls from The Beachcomber. Anglin, however, said he is aware of Moyer’s concerns and believes they are unfounded. He said he believes the environmental assessment of the site that Bakkhos was provided was conducted to industry standards. The report has been examined by their lawyers, he said, and the company believes there aren’t contamina-

tion issues at the property. “The concerns that people have are based on suspicions that we don’t have,” he said. McDermott said he is aware of the environmental concerns about the site and is currently trying to get more information from the county and the state Department of Ecology.

Clarence “Clancy” Cole On February 3, 2014, another member of The Greatest Generation died unexpectedly at his home at the age of 89. Clancy was born on May 22, 1924 in Lake Stevens, Washington, the sixth of seven children. His early childhood involved frequent moves as his father, Clarence “Baldy” Cole, was the chief field engineer on many of the major dam construction projects in the Northwest. He spent his high school years in the town of Wilbur, where his father was the first person hired on the Grand Coulee Dam construction. He lettered in three sports, including football where he led the State his senior year averaging over ten yards per carry. After high school, a football scholarship to Gonzaga was canceled at the last minute when the school eliminated its football program. Eastern Washington College was happy to fill the void. He played one season for Eastern before he was drafted into the Army in 1943. During his initial basic training in Bremerton, he was surprised to learn that he had set the base physical fitness record for the highest score. He was eventually accepted into the Army Air Corps where he became a P-51 pilot. After the war, Clancy returned to Seattle and graduated with a business degree from the U.W. He met and soon married his wife of 60 years, Mickey, who predeceased him in May 2011. They raised their two children, Michael and Susan, in Seattle on Magnolia where Clancy enjoyed coaching multiple youth sports teams for many years. Clancy worked a decade as a tool and sporting goods manager at Nordby’s Supply at Fisherman’s Terminal. He then became regional sales representative for Ingersoll Rand, where he was perennially the international sales leader. In 1984 Clancy & Mickey retired to Vashon Island where they had previously owned a weekend cabin. He remained active and involved as a docent at the Point Defiance Zoo and at the Museum of Flight, as well as an active member of the Vashon Island Golf Club, Kiwanis, American Legion/ VFW, the Eagles, and Church of the Holy Spirit on Vashon Island. Clancy is survived by his son Michael (Laurie) and daughter Susan, grandchildren Alison, McKenna, Owen and Aidan and great grandchildren Liam & Henley. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, February 15th at 11 a.m., at The Church of the Holy Spirit, 15420 Vashon Island Hwy SW, on Vashon Island. and told him not to return to the park. He filed a formal grievance on May 23. In an investigation interview, Richard said that deputies told him that people in the neighborhood were worried because their was a “black man in a mail truckâ€? and there was additional concern because the island has rapists and pedophiles — a point he said they brought up often. Interviews with the deputies, however, paint a different a picture of the exchange, and both deputies said they were extremely surprised by the complaint. Both deputies, whose names are redacted in the official documents, said they never brought Richard’s race into the conversation and were unaware he is African American until they met. They also said they did not say anything about rapists and pedophiles. One of the deputies, however, said he had told Richard that there was heightened concern on the island because of recent reported cases of child luring. Additionally, in their interviews, the deputies said that Richard was the person who suggested he leave the park, and they told him that was not necessary. One of the deputies in particular expressed that the allegations run counter to their work on the island. “It’s just, it’s really, it’s frustrating because ‌ the sheriff’s office on Vashon, unfortunately, has a black eye from a prior deputy going absolutely bezerk,â€? he said in the interview, referring to former Dep. Kevin Savage, who was fired from the force in 2011. “We’re like trying to, you know, we’re doing such a good job. ‌ I worked the White Center Storefront for several years, and so I’m all about that
community relations and that positive image of the sheriff’s office, and that’s what we’re doing on Vashon.� The investigation documents also include interviews with two islanders peripherally involved with the incident, Tom Kicinski, the assistant rowing coach, and Marianne Metz Lipe, whose daughter rows and who called the police to check into what seemed to some in the rowing community like a potentially suspicious situation. Kicinski told the investigation interviewer that some parents had shared their concerns about who might be driving the large, white truck, which appeared to be unmarked. Kicinski said the truck kept showing up about 20 minutes before practice, parking up close to the water. No one ever got out, Kicinski said, but he would notice the truck leave during practice. Because the cab was elevated, they could not see in. Additionally, Kicinski said, some of the girls on the crew team commute and often saw the same truck on their morning ferry to the island — a combination that left them and their parents feeling uneasy. Lipe told the interviewer that when she learned of the concerns, she offered to call authorities the next time the truck appeared. Kicinski said on May 21, he texted Lipe that the truck was back, and when she received the text, she called to ask deputies to come look into the situation. She said she did not know at that time Richard is African American, and the recording of her call indicates that she made no mention of race. When the deputies came, Kicinski said he was out on the water coaching, but from his vantage point, 200 to 300 yard away, the interaction between the deputies and Richard seemed casual. Reached last week, Richard noted his

disappointment in the investigation’s outcome. “I don’t think it was fair or just,� he said. He has not been back to Jensen Point since that day, he said, and now parks his truck by the post office and spends his off-hours at the library to avoid such an encounter again. He would have liked an apology, he said, and added that he declined to pursue further action because he works for a friend and does not want to cause any difficulties for him. In his emailed comments about the investigation, Sheriff Urquhart noted that the major at the Burien precinct is African American. The major reviewed the investigation and determined the finding should
be non-sustained. He could have asked for more information if he had found anything missing, Urquhart said, but did not. Urquhart added that the investigation was reviewed for fairness by the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight, a civilian auditor. The director of that agency is African American as well. Finally, Urquhart said, one of the deputies involved has two African American step children. Born 2002, Bobbie has been with her person all of her life but sadly, circumstances have suddenly changed and she has come to VIPP to find a new home. Bobbie is a tiny sprite of a cat with large ears and inquisitive and soulful eyes. She is very loving and she has great house manners. She has a lot of life and love to give to any lucky person who would choose her. Bobbie came to VIPP on 1/18/14.
Ginger Snap came to VIPP when her person moved off the island into an apartment complex. Ginger is used to going in and out and her owner feared that she would be hit by a car in her new surroundings. For that reason, she ended up at VIPP. Ginger Snap has had a tough time adjusting to her new life as a shelter cat and she dreams of the day when she can be in a home again. Ginger Snap came to VIPP on 12/24/13.
