Project could bring improvements to East Side Tacoma park
Port of Tacoma News File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Protecting water quality tops commission meeting agenda The Port of Tacoma Commission is expected this week to consider the construction of stormwater treatment facilities on three Port sites. The Olympic Container Terminal and North and South intermodal rail yards exceeded the Department of Ecology's stormwater benchmarks for zinc, a common culprit in maritime industrial settings due to the high concentration of galvanized metals and container coatings. As a result, the Port must upgrade stormwater treatment at these sites by the end of 2014. Following the action agenda, commissioners will hear the results of a recent public opinion survey of 500 Pierce County citizens on their views about economic development, transportation and the role of the Port. The Port of Tacoma Commission meeting will be held on Weds., Feb. 12, at noon in Room 104 of the Fabulich Center, 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. Meetings are streamed live online at portoftacoma.com. 81
