Charter review hearing, City Manager contract and streamlined permitting Tacoma residents will have plenty of opportunities next week to learn more about what's happening in city government. On Tuesday, councilmembers will hold their regular weekly study session and council meeting. Also on Tuesday, Tacoma City Council's Economic Development TACOMA CITY HALL Committee will meet to receive an informational briefing on the 2013 Public Facilities District Report, as well as an update on the City of Tacoma's "One Stop Permit Center." Council's Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee will meet on Wednesday, and council's Public Safety, Human Services, and Education Committee will meet on Thursday. Here is a look ahead at some notable meetings, events, and issues on deck next week at Tacoma City Hall. -- Todd Matthews, Editor ONE STOP PERMIT CENTER UPDATE Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee will meet Tuesday morning to receive an update on the creation of Tacoma's "One Stop Permit Center," which aims to improve customer service and the delivery of permitting services to the community. Last year, Tacoma's Planning and Development Services Department created the permit center, which is located on the third floor of Tacoma City Hall, in an effort to fully integrate permitting functions in a centralized location in order to improve the customer service experience, as well as improve the effectiveness, timeliness, and efficiency of permit intakes, reviews, and inspections. Councilmembers were last briefed on the plan during a study session in April. The council committee will discuss the topic during a meeting on Tues., Feb. 11, at 10 a.m., at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., Conference Room 248, in downtown Tacoma.More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org.
Posted online Thurs., Feb. 6 CHARTER REVIEW PUBLIC HEARING ON FEB. 10 Tacoma's Charter Review Committee will hold a public hearing next week to gather public comment and recommendations from residents for changes to the Tacoma City Charter. The 61-year-old charter serves as Tacoma's governing document and is reviewed every 10 years by a citizens committee. Any proposed changes are then reviewed by councilmembers before they are approved or rejected by Tacoma voters. Ten years ago, the committee recommended nearly two-dozen charter changes. CouncilmemTACOMA CITY CHARTER bers pared that list down to 11 proposed changes, and voters approved all the changes. Last month, Tacoma City Council appointed 15 people to serve on the committee, which will review the city's charter and make recommendations for changes this spring. Committee members include Bill Baarsma (Chair), Theresa Baker, Gary Brackett, Mabel Edmonds, Tim Farrell, Eric Hahn, Charles Horne, Justin Leighton, Mark Martinez, James Merritt, John Messina, Kenneth Miller, Patricia Talton, Catherine Ushka, and Justin Van Dyk. The Charter Review Committee public hearing will be held on Mon., Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in the Tacoma Municipal Building Council Chambers, 747 Market St., First Floor, in downtown Tacoma. Members of the public will have three minutes to address the Charter Review Committee. This public hearing will be one of many opportunities for residents to share ideas about

CITY MANAGER EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT Councilmembers are expected to vote Tuesday on a resolution that would reconfirm the appointment of T.C. Broadnax as Tacoma's City Manager and authorize the execution of a twoyear employment agreement that would expire CITY MANAGER on Feb., 12, 2016. BROADNAX Broadnax was hired as Tacoma City Manager two years ago after working nearly 20 years in local government in San Antonio, Tex., and Pompano Beach, Fla. Councilmembers are scheduled to vote on the resolution during its meeting on Tues., Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., City Council Chambers, in downtown Tacoma. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. $3.4M SAFER GRANT APPROVAL Councilmembers are expected to vote Tuesday on a resolution that would formally accept a $3.4 million grant awarded to the Tacoma Fire Department from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program to fund up to 20 front-line firefighter positions for two years. The SAFER grant is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
