Tacoma Goodwill to open coffee shop in Hilltop neighborhood
Wells Fargo plans downtown Tacoma relocation Posted online Tues., Jan. 28 Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Photos By Todd Matthews, Editor (ABOVE) / Unico Properties (BELOW) A contractor was hard at work Tuesday afternoon in downtown Tacoma converting street-level retail space once home to a cafe and wine bar into Wells Fargo Bank's new main branch. According to public records available on the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of the Comptroller of the Currency Web site, Wells Fargo submitted an application to relocate its downtown Tacoma main branch from 1201 Pacific Avenue (Wells Fargo Plaza) to 1001 Pacific Avenue on Aug. 16, 2013. The request was approved on Sept. 4, 2013, following a two-week public comment period. The Tacoma Daily Index contacted Wells Fargo to ask when the bank planned to open the branch in the new space, how many employees would work in the new location, and reasons for the branch relocation. "We are relocating our downtown Tacoma banking store," Wells Fargo spokesperson Lara Underhill told the Index on Tuesday. "We aren't ready to release the details just yet, but I will have all the information ready for you early next week." The Index contacted Unico Properties, which owns and manages Wells Fargo Plaza, to ask if Wells Fargo was moving entirely out of the 23-story, 43-year-old building, or only part of its operations, if Wells Fargo Plaza would be renamed, and whether or not any plans were under way to lease the space that would be vacated by Wells Fargo.
"Today we don't have any comment on this item," said Unico Properties General Manager Russ Davis. "I can say that the building is and will remain named Wells Fargo Plaza." The space at 1001 Pacific Avenue was once home to Bernardo's Aroma Cafe and Vinum Coffee and Wine Lounge. Last year, Opus Bank opened a branch at 950 Pacific Avenue, just a half-block south of the new Wells Fargo location.
