City of Tacoma News Posted online Mon., Jan. 27 19 Tacoma arts organizations will share $50K in City grants The Tacoma Arts Commission has awarded $50,000 in 2014 Arts Projects funding to 19 Tacoma organizations in support of public outreach projects in the fields of music, dance, theater, literary, film, urban, visual arts and cultural arts. The awards range in value from $1,000 to $4,000. "The breadth and quality of grassroots arts programing in Tacoma is consistently impressive," said Tacoma Arts Commission Chair Traci Kelly. "The range of community-based programs reflects our diverse neighborhoods and interests. We are proud to support this outstanding group of organizations." Funded projects include the production of five diverse cultural and arts festivals, visual art programs for families, urban art classes for youth, contemporary and multidisciplinary dance events, a variety of music performances, an international film series, poetry readings and workshops, arts components to a national conference and a community-wide guerilla art project. Funded organizations include the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, Children's Museum of Tacoma, DASH Center for the Arts, Fab-5, Fort Nisqually Foundation, King's Bookstore, Local Life, Metropolitan Glass, MLKBallet, Northwest Repertory Singers, Old Town Business and Professional Association, Puget Sound Poetry Connection, Second City Chamber Series, Sister City Council of Tacoma, Tacoma Concert Band, Tacoma Maritime Fest, the BareFoot Collective, University of Puget Sound, and the Washington State Historical Society. The Arts Projects funding program supports high quality community projects with a strong focus on arts that are accessible and affordable to the public. Twenty-three Arts Projects applications were submitted to the Tacoma Arts Commission with requests totaling $92,400. Arts Projects is one of three funding programs administered by the Tacoma Arts Commission. Open house planned for major Port of Tacoma Road project Posted online Mon., Jan. 27 Image Courtesy City of Tacoma Port of Tacoma Road property owners and businesses are invited to meet with City of Tacoma project managers and consultants to discuss vehicle access needs. The City is beginning design for a future rebuild of this road. A long and short-term goal of the project is to keep industry rolling. The project team will seek business and driver feedback on the project's traffic management plan and work oneon-one with property owners and Port tenants regarding design and construction access concerns. The first Public Open House will be held on Thurs., Jan. 30 at The Fabulich Center, Conference Room 104, 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. Representatives from the Tacoma Public Works Department will be there to provide a project update and answer questions. There will be two sessions, one from noon to 2 p.m. and another from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. According to City of Tacoma officials, the Port of Tacoma Road is in poor condition and needs to be rebuilt from the base up. The road Posted online Mon., Jan. 27 Meeting Wednesday to discuss Tacoma's planned improvements for pedestrians, cyclists The City of Tacoma will provide an update on its efforts to support walking and biking citywide during a presentation Wednesday at the downtown Tacoma Public Library. Staff with Tacoma's Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability will share accomplishments achieved last year, as well as planned enhancements this year. Attendees will learn more about $2.5 million in planned improvements serving pedestrians, trail and bikeway facilities, and upcoming Master Plan opportunities. The meeting will be held on Weds., Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Tacoma Public Library, 1102 S. Tacoma Ave. Tacoma's Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability serves to research, develop and make recommendations on sustainable practices and policies, track progress, promote sustainable practices, and establish community partnerships.

The project will replace approximately 7,800 feet of the road, from East 11th Street to Marshall Avenue. In addition to the rebuilt road, the Port of Tacoma Road project will also improve pedestrian access by completing missing segments of sidewalk to meet current ADA standards. Other safety improvements include a permanent traffic signal in advance of a future traffic notification system. The City and Port of Tacoma are partnering on this project and have obtained grant funds to cover more than 86 percent of the $496,000 project design cost. Posted online Mon., Jan. 27 Southbound Schuster Parkway closure ahead Southbound Schuster Parkway will close to vehicular traffic between South 4th Street and Pacific Avenue from Mon., Feb. 10 through Fri., March 21, to allow for stormwater improvements. Northbound lanes will remain unaffected. The improvements are designed to improve storm drainage and prevent flooding on Commerce Street near Spanish Steps. Detour signs will direct southbound traffic from Schuster Parkway to South 4th Street, Dock Street and to downtown or I-705 via the South 15th Street ramp. The Schuster Parkway sidewalk will be closed to pedestrians and users for two to three weeks during the road closure. Signs will notify pedestrians when the sidewalk is closed.
