File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Most major cities struggle to combat graffiti, and Tacoma is no exception. To that end, City Hall made several efforts this year to curb such illegal activity.

In September, City officials announced a pilot program aimed to remove graffiti from private property within 72 hours ("Pilot project aims to quickly remove Tacoma graffiti," Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 20, 2013; "City Hall to step up graffiti removal efforts in Tacoma," Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 24, 2013). The program, which is currently being rolled out, calls for the City of Tacoma to hire a contractor to remove graffiti on private property located within so-called "key corridors" that include downtown Tacoma, bicycle and pedestrian routes, and areas with a high concentration of commercial properties, hotels, and multi-family properties, according to a presentation made by City staff to Tacoma City Councilmembers. The graffiti clean-up service would be provided free up to three times for private property owners who elect to participate in the one-year pilot program. If the same property is tagged more than once, City staff would work with property owners to take preventive measures in order to continue to receive free clean-up services.

"It's a great opportunity to take those highly visible corridors and give them some special attention," said Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax.

Earlier this month, City officials announced incidents of graffiti throughout Tacoma are on the rise: 471 reported incidents so far this year, compared to 280 reported incidents last year ("Tacoma offers tips to combat graffiti," Tacoma Daily Index, Dec. 16, 2013).

City Hall and Tacoma Police Department officials encouraged property owners to move objects vandals can stand on away from walls; place motion-activated lights around properties to deter graffiti vandals; create barriers along walls using plants with thorns; and use a protective sealer or coating to protect brick or cement surfaces.

On a related note, the popular Graffiti Garage, a downtown haven for artists to legally spray paint their work, closed on Nov. 1 ("Downtown Tacoma's Graffiti Garage artist venue to close," Tacoma Daily Index, Oct. 25, 2013). The owner of the privately-owned garage, located at 723-737 Broadway, decided to limit its use to that of a commercial parking garage, citing feedback from neighboring businesses and concerns regarding safety and liability, according to City officials.

UW Tacoma to host 8th Annual MLK Unity Breakfast

Images Courtesy University of Washington Tacoma The University of Washington Tacoma will host the 8th Annual MLK Unity Breakfast next month to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his historic civic leadership that inspired a nation to strive for equality.

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that declared "separate but equal" unconstitutional and began the integration of the public school system, forever changing the educational landscape in America.

This gathering honors the message of Dr. King and the progress he continues to inspire.

To recognize this important event in the civil rights movement, the landmark Supreme Court decision that desegregated public education, the organizing committee has invited Cheryl Brown Henderson to give the keynote address at this year's MLK Unity Breakfast. Brown Henderson is one of the three daughters of the late Reverend Oliver L. Brown, who, along with 12 other parents led by the NAACP, filed a lawsuit against the local Board of Education in Topeka, Kan., on behalf of their children in the historic case Brown vs.

Board of Education. Upon appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, the case became the lead among five other legal challenges. Oliver Brown died in 1961 before knowing the impact his case would have on the country.

Tacoma Link open house Jan. 9

File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Sound Transit will host an open house in January to discuss expansion plans for Tacoma's Link light rail.

In May, Sound Transit Board of Directors identified the North Downtown Central Corridor (Hilltop via the Stadium District) as the preferred corridor for the potential expansion of Tacoma's Link light rail system. Sound Transit, in cooperation with the City of Tacoma and Pierce Transit, is now beginning the next phase of the project to further define and evaluate route alignments in the corridor.

An open house will be held on Thurs., Jan. 9, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Stadium High School, Auxiliary Gym, 111 N. 'E' St., in Tacoma.

Brown Henderson has an extensive background in education, business and civic leadership. She currently serves as president and CEO of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence, and Research, which she founded in 1988. Since its establishment, the Brown Foundation has provided scholarships to 40 minority students; presented awards to local, state, and national leaders; and sponsored programs on diversity and educational issues for some 4000 people.

Brown Henderson is also the owner of Brown & Brown Associates, an educational consulting firm, and has an extensive background in education, business, and civic leadership, having served on and chaired various local, state, and national boards. Additionally, she has nearly two decades of experience in political advocacy, public policy implementation, and federal legislative development. She is also an associate with the Westerly Group, a public advocacy firm in Washington, DC. The breakfast will also feature performances by local Gospel Group, Jerusalem's Gate, Kellie Richardson (renowned local spoken word artist/poet), and UW Student talent.

The 8th Annual MLK Unity Breakfast will be held on Mon., Jan. 20, between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at the University of Washington Tacoma, William W. Philip Hall, 1918 Pacific Ave., in downtown Tacoma.

The Unity Breakfast was established by the Black Student Union to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, and inspire members of the campus community to continue to work to make his vision of an equitable society a reality. The program recognizes students, faculty, and community members for outstanding service to the community through the Dream Awards which are presented during the program. The breakfast is planned with an inclusion of area youth and strives to provide opportunities for service and reflection through the Week of Service events.

This year's Unity Breakfast is co-sponsored by the Division of Student and Enrollment Services and the Black Student Union.
