More than counting fish

Volunteers keep an eye on stream health By KATHRYN TRUE For The Beachcomber

When John Martinak signed up for the Vashon Nature Center’s Salmon Watchers Program last fall, he wasn’t convinced he’d actually see a salmon. A busy stay-at-home dad of two boys, he enjoyed the forced downtime that visits to his “watching spot” along Judd Creek afforded him. But the water seemed too shallow and the obstacles too big for a salmon to manage — once an avid fly fisherman, he had an eye for such things. Martinak looked forward to the peaceful breaks, though he was still skeptical about seeing a fish — until one day when he heard something new. “I could hear this splashing way downstream, but I thought it was probably something else,” he said. “Then a half-hour later, I was amazed to see a fish come by. I expected it to be more of a frenzied activity, but the fish was methodical. It would scout out the next hurdle and clear it, then keep on going.” Martinak eventually counted 12 coho salmon as they made their way along a restored section of Vashon’s largest creek. He had the best luck during the worst weather, so if it was stormy, he’d head to the spot in hopes of glimpsing another fish. Unfortunately, the relative lack of wet fall weather (remember all that November sunshine?) probably played a roll in the low numbers of returning salmon to island creeks

An unexpected partnership is about to breathe new life into struggling culinary landmark Sound Food, as the island’s well-attended soup club Meat & Noodle finds itself a permanent home. Meat & Noodle’s Lauren Garaventa and her business partner Brandon D’Imperio have worked out what amounts to a gentlemen’s agreement with Sound Food’s current owner, Jeff Cunningham, whereby

Garaventa and D’Imperio will manage and develop the property, and Cunningham has agreed to take it off the market. “Everyone is here on a handshake,” said D’Imperio, a chef who moved to Vashon from Los Angeles just two months ago. “This was perfect timing,” added Garaventa. “Meat & Noodle needed a permanent location that was no longer my house.” SEE RESTAURANT, 11

OUT WITH THE OLD AT VASHON HIGH SCHOOL High school students commemorated their last day ever in the old Vashon High School building by leaving their mark, literally, on the school. On the last day of the term, Friday, Dec. 20, most teachers allowed and even encouraged students to write and draw in the classrooms and hallways. Walls became impromptu student art projects filled with names, quotes, jokes, doodles and more than one “YOLO.” Pictured at left, junior Zach Oriel adds to a colorful wall in the theater. At the end of the day, Principal Danny Rock came on the intercom system and led a school-wide countdown to the final bell. Students will return to classes on Monday in the new high school building, which will be unveiled to the community Sunday at an open house event (see story, page 4). The new school has been under construction next to the old one for more than a year, since the fall of 2012, and district and VHS staff spent more than a month packing supplies and preparing for the big move over winter break. Crews will begin demolition of the main building as well as building B and the maintenance building in mid-January. Sarah Low/Staff Photo

New high school poised to open its doors

Fire station hosts mammography mobile service

By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

After more than a decade of planning and a year and a half of construction, the new Vashon High School building will open to the public this weekend. Students will serve as tour guides at a community open house Sunday and lead groups through the 80,000-squarefoot structure. Those who attend may also choose to explore on their own, said VHS principal Danny Rock. Docents will be on hand to explain significant features of the building, and as a backdrop to the day’s events, teen musicians and adults who are VHS alumni, employees or parents will perform. Rock, who began his tenure at the high school this year, said he is excited for students to begin classes in the building next week, and he feels that the new space is a respectful one for learners, noting that it is environmentally sound, expansive, beautiful and utilitarian. “I feel honored to work in an environment like this, he said. Moving into the new high school was a large task, Rock said, with teachers packing up their belongings in the weeks preceding winter break and a moving company stepping in as soon as the break started to get the job done in time for classes to start on Jan. 6. Once students and staff are settled in the new building, Rock said he will be interested to see how the new environment influences learning. “I am most looking forward to seeing how students and teachers use the flexible and collaborative spaces, he added. Superintendent Michael Soltman has

The building was made possible by a $47.7 million bond Vashon voters approved in 2011, and the school board chose to include several green features during the building process. One of the hallmarks of the building is its “porosity, according to Brian Carter of Integrus Architecture, the firm that designed the building. The term refers to the intermingling of the indoors and outdoors, which the building does in several ways, including the use of abundant windows, doors that roll up to the outside and inclusion of wood harvested from the

school property. Each classroom in the high-tech building is outfitted with a voice amplification system as well as a projector that the teacher will control via a laptop, Rock noted. Students will sit in chairs with wheels, something Rock said has been proven to help with the learning process. “Students don’t require an ideal space to learn, but with it, there is that much less resistance, he said. The open house will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Additional tours will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday mornings through February.

Women who choose to get their mammograms on Vashon will now go to the fire station for the service. Assured Imaging, which provides mobile mammography in several communities, including Vashon, made the change from its mammography coach last month, according to Carrie Pender, an executive vice president with the company. The coach — a large, specially equipped vehicle that provided monthly mammograms on the island — required a prohibitively expensive repair, she said, and she reached out to the Vashon community to find a suitable alternative location for the services. Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) personnel stepped up, Pender said, and provided a space for the December appointments with just a few days’ notice. “I’ve never had anything go so quickly or so smoothly, Pender said. Now mammography services are set to be at the fire station for all of 2014. Typically, they will be the first Friday of each month. Hank Lipe, VIFR’s fire chief, was not available to comment, but Susan Wolf, the district secretary, said Lipe supported this endeavor because VIFR is a health safety organization, and he believes providing space for the mammograms is a community service. Each month on Vashon, Pender said, about 50 women receive mammograms through the mobile service, the highest number among the communities they serve. — Susan Riemer

Water district considers Self-defense classes for kids, adults to begin this month changing share policy for new developments By SARAH LOW Staff Writer

Developer plans to break ground on new lodging this spring By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

Vashon’s largest water purveyor is poised to change one of its policies, allowing a developer to move forward on plans to build a multi-unit hotel in Vashon town. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the board of Water District 19 will discuss and hear public comments on a policy change that would allow more than one structure to share one water unit, commonly called a water share. Under its current policy, every freestanding structure must have its own associated water share. The board will likely vote on the change later this month. Water district officials say the policy change makes sense and is one the district has been considering for years. It is acting now because Scott Shapiro, managing director of Eagle Rock Ventures, a Seattle real estate and development firm, has applied to use his four water shares behind Vashon Village — which he also owns — to serve a new multi-unit retreat center-style hotel called The Lodges on Vashon. The water district is obligated to provide Shapiro with four shares, something it agreed to in a settlement following a lengthy legal battle over water shares with the property’s former owner, Dan McClary, who had planned to build a hotel there. Shapiro, who purchased the property in 2012, has proposed splitting those four shares between 16 to 18 small and highly water efficient structures, something district officials say is acceptable, as plans for the development show that even during peak times, the hotel would still use no more water than four shares provide. “They have a property that meets the usage requirement and it would be approved in a straightforward manner if it wasn’t for the number of structures,” said Bob Powell, a Water District 19 commissioner. The district could make an exception to its current

policy, but decided a policy change made more sense, Powell said, and was advised the same by its attorney. Jeff Lakin, the district’s general manager, said he supports the policy change, explaining that he believes the district should be concerned with how much water a new development will use, not how it is configured. Allowing multiple structures to share water shares could actually help developers who have an eye toward conservation, he added. “The one water unit per physical building thing is not going to be accommodating to out-of-the-box thinking and design like we’re starting to see,” he said. Shapiro, who also owns the Spinnaker Building in Vashon town, said that while the district is obligated to provide his new hotel with four shares, he has planned for the Lodges of Vashon to conserve water and be sustainable in other ways, similar to some of his other projects in the Seattle area. He expects the hotel will earn a silver or gold LEED certification. “It’s just the smart thing to do from an environmental standpoint and a marketing standpoint and the smart thing from a community standpoint,” he said. Shapiro said his firm expects to break ground on The Lodges on Vashon this spring and to open them this summer.

The new year on Vashon will bring a new learning opportunity to islanders both young and old in the form of a self-defense course based on the American Kenpo Karate style. Alex Echevarria, a fourthdegree black belt with more than 26 years of experience in the martial arts, will teach eight-week courses for kids and adults beginning Jan. 8 at the Open Space for Arts & Community. “Taking care of ourselves is all about awareness, conditions in our environment, avoidance and psychology,” Echevarria said. “We just need training to remember the things we all know instinctively.” After eight years of visiting friends that live on the island, Echevarria and his wife Jean moved to Vashon from Colorado after he retired from teaching high school philosophy and history last June.

“We’ve been wanting to move here for a long time. It’s home, it’s where we always should have been,” he explained. Though both Echevarria and his wife are artists — she makes wood block prints and he makes concrete sculptures into Japanese folk art — martial arts have been a part of his life since he was 9 years old, and self-defense is something he believes everyone should know, he said. “Not just women,” Echevarria said. “Men can be especially vulnerable. There is so much pressure on them to be the defenders, but many have anxiety about not being able to defend themselves or others.” Echevarria, who is currently teaching a kickboxing class at the Vashon Athletic Club, emphasizes that while the self-defense course will utilize principles and techniques from the Kenpo style of karate, it is not designed for con-

Classes will be held on Wednesdays from Jan. 8 to March 5 at the Open Space for Arts & Community. The kids’ class (ages 6 to 13) costs $56 and will be from 4 to 5 p.m., and the adults’ class (ages 14 and older) costs $80 and will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Registration begins 30 minutes before the first class.

Putting out a newspaper in a place as lively and quirky as Vashon Island is a job that’s fun, certainly challenging and always rewarding. Here at The Beachcomber we count ourselves lucky to get to know our community so intimately and bring you the news and information you’ve come to count on each week. But we can’t take all the credit because we couldn’t do it alone. As 2013 comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who supported the newspaper this past year. The Beachcomber gets a hand from a slate of community writers and photographers, both regular and occasional, who ask for no more than their name by their work. These volunteers are most notable in As 2013 comes to a close, we the opinion section, where guests regularly contribute want to thank everyone commentaries, adding perwho supported the sonality, perspective and newspaper this past year. some humor to our pages. Kevin Joyce, Will North, Kevin Pottinger, Greg Wessel and Chris Austin, some of our most regular contributors, thank you for keeping us laughing and pondering life on this eclectic island. The sports section is also driven by volunteer writers — parents, coaches, players and other volunteers who attend local games and generously cover them for the paper. Rita Allman, Pat Call, Cheryl Cochrane, Bruce Cyra, Ezra Lacina, Karen O’Neil, Kelly McEachern, Gary Means, Cheryl Pruett and Kevin Ross have all helped us cover our athletes. This past year regular features have been graciously contributed by a couple of island writers. Bruce Haulman continues to bring history to life with his Time & Again columns, and Jenn Reidel has helped us get to know our neighbors better with her Welcome Vashon interviews. We also want to recognize the many photographers who occasionally share their work with us. Terry Donnelly, Jeff Dunnicliff, Mick Etchoe, Kelly Keenan, Ralph Moore, Ray Pfortner, John Sage and Robert Teagardin have all contributed photos that have added greatly to the paper. This is also sadly the last year we’ll be able to thank Rik Forschmiedt, a talented island photographer and former Beachcomber employee who contributed sports shots weekly until he moved off the island last summer. Finally, we’re ever grateful to our readers. You’re a loyal audience week after week, and you often help shape the paper with a visit to the office with a news tip, a thoughtful letter to the editor, a question about a topic we haven’t covered, a kind correction when we get a fact wrong or appreciation for a story well done. We’re also deeply grateful to our advertisers, many of whom support this paper week after week, through thick and thin. Our newspaper couldn’t exist without you. Thank you for your support.

New building turned out well I recently toured the new high school building and was very pleased with what I saw. I regret losing the main classroom building we created in 1972, but it would have been very difficult, disruptive and a series of compromises to remodel that building instead of providing a new one. I congratulate the school board, staff, architects and contractors and all the citizens of Vashon that supported the effort. Our tax money was well spent. — Keith Putnam, architect

Sports

Local coaches do more than teach the game Here is the thing: The Vashon Island Soccer Club fall soccer season is now complete. On top of the many volunteer hours put in to run the club, a lucky few had the honor of coaching a team and got to spend several hours a week with the kids, doing what they love to do. The kids drive the coaches crazy; the coaches drive

— waiting to get a password reset. Kathleen Johnson of Vashon Youth & Family Services was very generous to pay for the background checks and insurance required for us to be volunteer navigators. Synthia Downs and Donna Donnelly of Vashon Medical Reserve Corp paid for the all-island mailing, explaining the ACA rules and upcoming events. And then after the park district refused to let us use Chautauqua for free to sign people up for health insurance, they came through again with money to cover the cost of the room rental. And lastly, a big thank you to Ava Apple of the Vashon Senior Center for letting us use the senior center for sign-ups for free. Everyone who volunteered and everyone who came to get health insurance had a few groans when the site went down and a few laughs and, yes, many, many cheers when someone was signed up successfully. Many islanders now have health insurance for the first time and walked out with smiles on their faces. We Vashonites know how to work together.

the kids crazy; everyone works through all that. As the coach you win a few, lose a few, put on some Band-Aids and apply some ice, and hopefully impart a few life lessons along the way, and then the season ends. There is this gap, this unfulfilled gap, as the kids go back to their life, and these wonderful humans you were getting to spend several hours a week with just evaporate. My friend and coach extraordinaire Bruce Morser pointed this out to me some years back, and it is just always so true. So there are really only two solutions: Start the next round of practices now, or you take on coaching other sports. Basketball, wrestling, lacrosse are winter/ early spring sports that can always use a few more good coaches, so that is the good news. There is a phrase for you: You are the “usual suspects.” You coach multiple sports tirelessly (not to mention being on school committees, parks committees etc.), and this way you get to see these kids through several cycles each year and avoid the “gap.” Eleven-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater once said, “Surfing is like the Mob or something, (once you are in) you are not getting out.” The same could be said of coaching.

Local volunteers signed up more than 350 households I want to thank all the volunteers who trained, took the test and became navigators to help our island friends and neighbors sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. We collectively signed up more than 350 households, of which about 80 percent qualified for Washington Apple Health, the free health coverage. These wonderful volunteers are Alice Larson, Camille Staczek, Carmelita Logerwell, Carol Ireland-McLean, Chaim Rosemarin, Cherry Champagne, Chris Davis, Debi Richards, Gretchen Gannett, John Staczek, Kate Smith, Kathleen Davis, Kim Farrell, Lee Ockinga, Linda Fox, Mona Hardy, Rhoda Karusaitis, Roxana Rivas, Steve Benowitz, Trudy Rosemarin, Van Crozier and Wally Fletcher. We could not have reached as many in the Hispanic community without the help of Jessica Lisovsky, who was so very patient and willing to be on hold with the Washington Exchange — it seemed forever

Bellingham company will build two new water taxis The King County Ferry District, which provides Vashon’s water taxi service, has selected the Bellingham-based All American Marine to design and build two new water taxis to replace its pair of 25-year-old leased vessels. The new catamarans will replace the Rachel Marie and Melissa Ann — vessels that have been operating the district’s two routes from Vashon Island and West Seattle to downtown Seattle since 2010. The new passenger ferries will each carry 250 passengers, 78 more than the boats they will replace. Joe McDermott, chair of the ferry district and Vashon’s representative on the King County Council, said in a press release that the new boats will make water taxi service more reliable. The ferry district continues to see increased ridership on both its routes, and sometimes the most popular sailings fill, leaving riders on the dock. “This action will lead to more reliability and capacity for water taxi riders,”

McDermott said. “We continue to see increased ridership, and these new boats will help us meet the demand of King County residents looking for an alternative to single occupancy cars.” The new water taxis will also have wider doors for quicker loading and unloading, more space for bicycles and will be more comfortable for passengers, according to ferry district officials. Design and construction of the two vessels is expected to cost $11.8 million, 80 percent of which will be funded by the Federal Transit Administration. Construction is expected to begin in early 2014. The first vessel will be completed by mid-2015, followed by delivery of the second vessel in late 2015. According to its website, All American Marine has been building boats in Bellingham for more than 20 years, and in 1998 it moved into the high-tech catamaran business when it established a partnership with New Zealand naval architect Nic deWaal.

Acclaimed Seattle author will speak at two Vashon events By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer

For a writer with a reputation for penning books about ordinary people living through extraordinary times, Seattle author David Laskin hit the jackpot when it came to his own ancestors. “The Family: Three Journeys into the Heart of the 20th Century” tells the remarkable story — spanning the tumultuous last century — of what happened to three branches of Laskin’s mother’s family. Laskin will come to Vashon twice to discuss this new, narrative nonfiction book. The Vashon Ecumenical Book Group will host Laskin from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Bethel Church, and all are invited to join the discussion. Then at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Vashon Bookshop, Laskin will read from “The Family.” Laskin’s previous award-winning books include “The Long Way Home” and “The Children’s Blizzard.” With little stretch of the imagination, Laskin’s family history of emigration from Russia makes for a dramatic tale. His grandfather’s sister arrived at Ellis Island with $5 in her pocket and ended up a major American tycoon as the founder of Maidenform. Other relatives immigrated to Palestine in the 1920s and endured the historical machinations of that era and area. Still others perished in the Holocaust. Yet for Laskin, his family’s narrative is but a universal story about the plight of people forced to leave their native country, or who voluntarily exit, due to a tidal wave of events washing away the foundation of their ordinary lives. “We all have amazing family stories and wrenching encounters

“Heat” is one of several photos from Africa and India by Nicholas Wiesnet that will be on display at The Hardware Store Restaurant this month.

David Laskin will speak about his new book, “The Family,” at Bethel Church as well as at the Vashon Bookshop. with history,” said Laskin in a recent online interview. “My hope is that readers will look at their own families in a new light. ... Our families may not make it into history textbooks, but that doesn’t mean they did not make history. History has made and broken all of our families. When readers turn the last page of ‘The Family,’ my hope is that the next volume they pick up will be the family photo album or scrapbook.”

Ian Moore and his band return to the Bike

Islander Ian Moore and the Lossy Coils will play a show at The Bike with the FieldHands.

Vashon guitarist and singer-songwriter Ian Moore has played music with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and ZZ Top to large audiences across the U.S. and Europe. On Vashon, Moore and The Lossy Coils will play a show with limited seating (100 tickets) at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Red Bike. Moore’s music contains elements of folk, rock ‘n’ roll, world music and blues. Moore began his career in Austin, Texas, and soon became known as a teenage guitar prodigy. His work has been compared to well-respected names in both classic and contemporary rock and roll music. The FieldHands, a rock band that originated on Vashon, will open for Moore. $12 tickets at brownpapertickets.com.

What is it about an island with a small population that produces such a large number of artists? For Vashon native and cinematographer Nicholas Wiesnet, 25, it’s all about observing nature, color and the randomness of light. As a cinematographer who currently lives and works out of Los Angeles, Wiesnet has spread his artistic wings across the globe, inspired by the roots of his island home. “I was conscious of the beautiful light on the island; it is so different in “I always admired each of the seasons. I always admired the natural beauty around me,” said the natural beauty Wiesnet, whose photographs from around me.” Ethiopia and India will be on display Nicholas Wiesnet, beginning Jan. 3 at The Hardware photographer and cinematographer Store Restaurant. The son of two documentary producer/directors, Wiesnet never imagined his path would lead to cinematography. His early interests included all things artistic, from cartoon drawing to architecture, with a later focus on photography in high school. While he loved the way film captured light, something went missing from photography for Wiesnet. When he realized cinematography enlivened still images with movement, his passion for the medium took off. “I will always do photography,” said Wiesnet, “but as a profession, cinematography is it.” With a quiet chuckle, Wiesnet added that his parents were thrilled with his choice. After filming a documentary in the Omo River Valley of Ethiopia, an area bordering Kenya and South Sudan that National Geographic calls the final frontier of Africa, Wiesnet stayed on to photograph the Kara and Hamur tribes of the region. “The Kara are incredibly generous and kind people,” Wiesnet said. “My experience there has profoundly affected my world view.” Twelve photographs from that trip will be part of the upcoming show. Following another job filming a documentary on healthcare in Kolkata, India, Wiesnet took his still camera and traveled north to Rajasthan, where he shot numerous portraits, a dozen of which will line the back gallery walls at the restaurant. Southeast Asia tops Wiesnet’s photography wish list. Paid work interrupted his recent plans to visit Myanmar and Vietnam, shelving that trip for now, but Wiesnet’s motivation runs deep, and he seems undeterred. “Compassion is at the heart of everything I do. I’ll do this for the rest of my life.” An artist’s reception will be Friday, Jan. 10.

Bergamot to close for artist’s sabbatical Bergamot Studio, Kassana Holden’s textile and photographic image design hub, will be open by appointment only from January through March, while Holden is on design sabbatical. “I’m deeply thankful to all the islanders and off-islanders, artists, designers and customers who have contributed to the success of Bergamot Studio this past year,” said Holden. “I look forward to returning in April after this creative interlude, with new inspiration and new products.”

RESTAURANT CONTINUED FROM 1

Coming into the new partnership, D’Imperio and Garaventa have both developed their own unique pop-up dining ventures, temporary restaurants that serve special, one-night-only meals at specified locations. Garaventa, a former restaurant accountant and tour manager for traveling bands, was tired of traveling and had always been interested in food, she said, but didn’t want to become a line cook. So after taking some butchering classes, she moved to Vashon from Seattle in 2011 to apprentice as a butcher for La Boucherie, the farm-to-table operation of Sea Breeze Farm. After La Boucherie stopped its regular dinner services last spring, Garaventa decided to strike out on her own, starting a pop-up soup club that focused on her favorite food: noodle soup, and specifically Asian noodle soups, made by hand and using locally grown ingredients whenever possible. This included the meat and stock, since Garaventa raises pigs, sheep, ducks and chickens herself. Garaventa began the aptly named Meat & Noodle Soup Club — whose motto is “Raise Meat. Roll Noodles. Make Soup. Eat.” — and has been creating mouth-watering, visually stunning Asian soup dishes since May of last year. Garaventa’s noodle soups are influenced by several Asian styles, including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Singaporean. “The soup club has gone very well,” she said, noting that seats have filled up quickly and the club now holds double seatings to accommodate more people. “We’re always full, but there are usually some spaces left close to the date of a dinner,” she said. Meat & Noodle has become known primarily through word of mouth — though it does have a Facebook page with almost 400 fans and a partnership with Seattle Distilling Company. The only way to attend a meal is to get on Garaventa’s email list. D’Imperio, for his part, was born and raised in Los Angeles and is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef who has honed his skills working at several notable L.A. restaurants. Over time, his passion shifted from the kitchen to the land and the origins of the food he cooked. He eventually purchased a 3-acre farm just outside Los Angeles, where he raised livestock, maintained an heirloom garden, made pasta, baked bread and even brewed beer, all in support of his own farmto-table dinner club venture. When he moved and bought a farm on Vashon, D’Imperio knew he wanted to con-

tinue in this vein and while researching the local food scene he discovered Garaventa, who was ready to take her soup club to the next level. That’s where Sound Food comes in. D’Imperio contacted Jeff Cunningham, who along with Greg Stoffer has owned Sound Food since 2007, but has seen the formerly popular eatery struggle to regain its place on a changed island and in a changed economy. Cunningham put the property up for sale about eight months ago. “There has been some interest in it, but no serious offers,” Cunningham said, noting that there have also been people interested in leasing the space, but he did not like any of their business plans. Cunningham, a third-generation islander, is the grandson of Bill Cunningham, who owned the Vashon Tavern, and son of Don and Gert Cunningham, who built the landmark Spinnaker Restaurant. He said he likes Garaventa and D’Imperio’s vision to keep good food the focus of the venue. “Restaurants and food have always been a part of my family in some way. It’s important to me to maintain that legacy,” he said. Right now, the only definitive plan for Sound Food is that it will be the permanent home of the Meat & Noodle Soup Club, which will continue to hold dinners on Sunday evenings as soon as as the pair completes the permitting process, which Garaventa hopes will be in February. It will also be licensed as a commercial kitchen, and the space will still be available for private events. Garaventa will be the general manager and D’Imperio the executive chef. Beyond that, both have ideas and plans for Sound Food, encompassing a broad range of possibilities. They have discussed everything from restaurant-style food service to teaching classes; running a bakery to providing butchering services; catering to potentially partnering with the schools; and of course, farm-to-table dinners, using nothing but local ingredients. “There are so many possibilities; this is a fantastic multi-use space for good food,” D’Imperio said. “We want to make something really amazing out of what we have in that space and with all of Vashon’s resources.” Cunningham agreed. “I believe they can do this; I think it’s going to be fun,” he said. “I want to drive by and see lights on and action inside, and I’m willing to forego some income to see that happen.” To be on the email list for the Meat & Noodle Soup Club, email Lauren Garaventa at meatandnoodle@gmail. com. Soup Club events take place on designated Sunday evenings and cost $30 per person, per evening to attend.

Hoopsters ranked at top of the league Jessie Norton sets new scoring record for Vashon

Nine athletes travel to invitational

By EZRA LACINA For The Beachcomber

The Pirates are undefeated so far and are ranked number one in the Nisqually League. The most recent competition included two road games at Auburn Adventist and Cascade Christian. The Pirates were victorious in both games, defeating Auburn Adventist, 77-51, and Cascade Christian, 62-38. The Pirates faced the Auburn Adventist Falcons in a nonleague meeting. The game started off well for Vashon, with senior Owen Brenno scoring two quick inside buckets, but the Falcons answered with scores of their own. The two teams traded scores for most of the first quarter, but then Vashon junior Jessie Norton started scoring almost every time he touched the ball. At the end of the first quarter, the Pirates held a narrow lead with a score of 21-17. In the second quarter, the Pirates started to play great defense. Norton had two great blocked shots, and 5’10” junior Ian Stewart impressively blocked a 6-foot, 5-inch center for the Falcons. Norton continued to drive the lane with authority, sinking almost everything he put up. Sophomore Sam Yates and Stewart also added to the scoring frenzy, with the defense focusing on Norton and leaving them open. When the first half came to a close, the Pirates found themselves winning, 45-26. The second half revealed more Pirate dominants. Sophomore Noah Chee started the Pirates off with an excellent spin move layup. The Falcons were outmatched in every way. The Pirates were faster, smarter and more skilled, and the Falcons had no answer for stopping Norton. The game ended with the Pirates slaying the Falcons, 77-51. In the victory, Norton set a new school scoring record, scoring 39 points and breaking the previous record of 38 set by former Pirate star Alex Wegner. Two days later the Pirates traveled to Cascade Christian for a league rivalry game against the Cougars. The Pirates started off a little flat, but quickly turned it around, led by Yates and Norton. The Cougars were playing a rough style of defense, hand checking Pirate players up and down the court. At some points it looked like they thought it was a football game. Despite the rough style of play, the Pirates managed to score

In the second quarter, Vashon played amazing defense, allowing only 4 points. Norton and Yates continued to score with consistency. With half of the game in the books, the score read Vashon 29, Cascade 14. Vashon maintained a commanding lead through the third quarter, beating the Cougars at both ends of the court. Norton capped off the quarter hitting an NBA-range 3-pointer to beat the buzzer. As the final period began, it was clear the Pirates were on their way to a win, but they didn’t let up on intensity. With 1:54 left in the game, coach Andy Sears sent in the bench. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Vashon students started to chant “200! 200!” as this victory was the 200th for Sears. Yates led the Pirates, scoring 26, and Norton followed him with 23, going 9 for 9. The Pirates will play at home against Life Christian at 7 p.m. Friday. — Ezra Lacina is The Riptide’s sports editor.

Vashon grapplers strong at Idaho tournament

The Vashon Pirate wrestling team made a good showing at the prestigious Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Dec. 20 and 21. This annual invitational tournament posts 64- and 32-man brackets stacked with the best high school wrestlers from a three-state region across all classifications from 1A to 4A. With the team’s strong showing at last year’s tridistrict tournament, the Pirates were allowed to bring 10 wrestlers. One was out due to illness, but the rest made the long, snowy drive and represented Vashon well. At the end of the second grueling day, sophomore Chase Wickman took third. Wickman won his first match, pinning his opponent in the first round. His second match didn’t go so well, and he fell, 9-14. Bouncing back, his third match was a win, 9-0. Wickman won his

fourth match, then got to face the opponent who had beaten him in the second-round bout. Tied after two rounds, Wickman allowed an escape, then down by 1 point, got the takedown with 17 seconds to go and won by one. The match for third place was another thriller, with the feisty 106 pounder going into overtime before winning with a takedown. Senior Shane Armstrong battled through his bracket to a seventh-place finish. Armstrong won his first two matches before losing and then worked his way back up the backside of the bracket. Also competing for Vashon were Preston Morris and Logan Nelson, who both notched wins; Shane Williams, Chester Pruett, Franklin Easton, Joe Coller and Louis Jovanovich. Last Saturday the Pirates hosted the annual Rock Tournament. Results were not available at press time, but will be reported next week. Next up, the Pirate wrestlers will travel to the Everett Classic tournament on Jan. 4. — Cheryl Pruett is the mother of two Pirate wrestlers.

Pirates defeat Falcons, fall to Cougars Victory is first for girls team this season By GARY MEANS For The Beachcomber

The Vashon Pirate roundballers notched their first win of the season on Dec. 18 in a home game against the Auburn Adventist Falcons. The Pirates grabbed an early lead that they never surrendered on their way to a 32-16 final score. Seniors Anya Quig and Tianna Koenig combined to score 20 points, with Quig tallying 11 and Koenig adding 9. Siena Jannetty scored 6 points for the Pirates, while Kate Atwell, Kalie Heffernan and Maria Benavente added 2 points each. “It was good to get that first win even if we did not have the complete effort that we aim for,” said coach Henry Porter after the game. On Friday night, Dec. 20, Vashon traveled to Puyallup to take on the Cascade Christian Cougars, who lost only three games last season and are expected to be one of the better squads in the Nisqually League this year. The Pirates jumped out to an early lead against the Cougars but ended the first quarter down 17-13. For the first five minutes of the second quarter, the Cougars extended their lead by only 1 point, but the half ended with Vashon down 32-21 in part

due to losing the services of Quig after a third foul. The half ended when a Jannetty shot from beyond half court just rimmed out and was collected by Atwell, who hit a buzzer-beater to cut the Cougar margin. Vashon pulled to within 7 points in the early moments of the third quarter, but that was as close as the Pirates would come as foul trouble and turnovers played key roles a 70-33 final score. Vashon scoring was distributed across the team, led by Jannetty’s 9 points. The remainder of the scoring line featured Quig (8), Koenig (5), Benevente (4), Eva Anderson (3), Atwell (2), Kalie Heffernan (2) and Lilly Hennessey (1). The Pirates played both games last week without the services of Annika Hille, who had averaged more than 8 points per game in the first four games. “We certainly missed Annika. She brings a great defensive energy and has been a leading score,” Porter said. “Regardless, we played very well for most of the first half,” he added, “so I know that as a team we can bring the right energy level to be competitive. We just have to make that happen across the entire game.” The Pirates’ next game will be against Life Christian High School at home at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. — Gary Means is the assistant coach of the Vashon girls basketball team.

SALMON CONTINUED FROM 1

year. But even though overall the 2013 numbers were low, Shinglemill — Vashon’s second largest creek — had a notably good year, with more than 28 fish counted and nine redds, compared to 2012 totals of only four fish and two redds. “We are currently trending up on Shinglemill, which is really exciting,” said Tom Dean, director of the VashonMaury Island Land Trust, which has conservation projects on both Judd and Shinglemill Creeks. “We’ve made enough investments in (the creeks) that we’re just getting to a point where we can pay more attention to the nuances of watching the salmon to see where they are spawning — what does the gravel look like, what’s the passage like, is there enough shade, is there enough food?” One big factor, especially for Shinglemill, is that the traditionally heavy bursts of rain each fall tear out salmon redds. According to Dean, a dry year may bring down spawning numbers, but it may also increase survival rates among juvenile fish. Dean is watching Shinglemill closely because the land trust invested in a large salmon habitat restoration project

there from 2006 to 2009. The project involved moving more than 100 logs into a half-mile stretch of the creek above Cedarhurst Road. One thing island creeks share is their decided lack of woody debris, which creates pools and is key to good salmon habitat. Dean said he appreciates the Salmon Watcher Program because participants provide important data about island streams that can help the land trust make its case in funding applications. Each salmon watcher is assigned a stretch of an island stream, where they observe and record what they see for at least two 15-minute sessions each week from mid-October through December. Thirty salmon watchers collected data in 2013; in addition to tallying salmon, they made note of the weather, changes in the stream and other wildlife they encountered. High school sophomore Cayce Morrison joined the program to fulfill a citizen science requirement for his biology class, but so enjoyed the experience that he said he’d like to do it again next year. “Since Vashon is not that big, it’s really cool that we have salmon here and that they’re making a comeback,” he said. Besides logging 15 salmon, Morrison added another important wildlife sighting to island nature records: He was one of four people last fall to spy a creek-loving bird

The Rev. Canon Carla Valentine Pryne The Rev. Ann Saunderson, Priest Assoc.

Our beautiful Mary E. Taylor Knight slipped away peacefully on Saturday, November 30th 2013, with her loving husband Jim of 62 years by her side. Mary was the first born of 10 wonderful children to Ernest and Denise Taylor of Grass Range, Montana. She was born December 25th 1930. Mary is survived by her loving husband Jim, eldest son Earle (Robin), daughter Valarie (Harold), son Greg (Teri), and daughter Susan (Ken), 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter, along with many other dear family members and friends. Mary graduated from Issaquah High School in 1950. She married Jim Knight in 1951, living in Seattle and eventually moving to Vashon Island to enjoy the country life, and raise their children for the next 19 years. While on Vashon, Mary was seriously involved within the community and dedicated herself to young people; she was extensively involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and volunteering her time throughout the PTA programs. After the kids were older, she worked for the Vashon School District as a fabulous cook. Along with these duties, she and Jim were avid square dancers, and organizers within the square dance community. Living in Kent for the past 35 years, Mary was known throughout the state for her work for Square Dancing Clubs, on CPS and State councils, as well as the National Conventions. She worked in real-estate for many years, and enjoyed reading, cooking, knitting, sewing, camping, and especially her family and many friends. A loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, sister in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother; her inner light shines bright with her love for all. Our hearts are heavy; our loving memories are forever. Mary’s loving heart and loving smile, along with her twinkling eyes will remain in our hearts for evermore.

that’s rare to the island, an American dipper. Bianca Perla, director of the Vashon Nature Center and Salmon Watchers Program, said the dipper sightings are encouraging, as the birds thrive on clean water and a healthy invertebrate population, the same needs that juvenile salmon have. “The creek functions as an entire system, so when we see more dippers, that’s encouraging to me for the salmon population,” she said. Perla noted it’s difficult to know whether the sightings of salmon and other species signify vastly improving numbers or are due to the fact that there are more eyes on the creeks now. The Salmon Watchers Program started just a few years ago, and Perla is looking forward to collecting years more of data. “These are initial observations, and we’re starting to document that trend so over time we can develop some comparisons,” she said. Twelve-year-old Mabel Moses is a second-year salmon watcher whose lively photographs and videos documented 2012’s big return. She has seen many creatures on her watch, including signal crawfish, an owl, heron, coyote scat, “raccoon prints everywhere” and salmon at Shinglemill and at Judd Creek near her home in Paradise Valley. “I didn’t know salmon could get through such shallow water, and it’s cool that they are right down by our house,” she said. “I didn’t believe it until I saw them.” King County Basin Steward and islander Greg Rabourn has been watching Paradise Valley pools closely after he

managed a restoration project last summer to improve salmon habitat on a quarter-mile of Judd Creek on a land trust conservation easement. Rabourn, who was pleased last fall to unseat the land trust’s Abel Eckhart as the reigning “first salmon sighting of the season” champ, is a big fan of salmon watchers, who, he says, help the county know when and where the salmon show up on Vashon. “It’s great that people are getting involved and appreciating what some consider to be an invisible resource,” he added. “I hear all the time: ‘There are no fish left in these streams; I’ve never seen anything.’ When people actually witness the beauty of salmon in theses creeks, they are more likely to protect the resources necessary for salmon survival.” Longtime island environmentalist Yvonne Kuperberg moved into her home just above Shinglemill Creek in 1979, but it was more than a decade later when she saw her first salmon there as a member of the island’s

first group dedicated to counting salmon, the Salmon Stalkers. “To find fish living in it was absolutely amazing,” Kuperberg said. “When we first started watching, we walked our section of the creek and we’d see a lot of fish.” King County then ran a citizen salmon watching program on Vashon sporadically in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2011, the program was revived by Perla, an ecologist who at the time had recently moved back to the island and started the Vashon Nature Center. The center forwards all its data to King County, and may some day become affiliated with the county’s salmon watching program. “Vashon Nature Center’s mission is to help create a community of islanders who are paying attention to the natural world, enjoying being out in it and learning about it,” Perla said. “When you get a group of people together who all appreciate salmon, it touches on a lot of things we’re trying to do — not only learn about nature and different species, but from each other, and to make friends

while contributing to a database of island flora and fauna.” Only 50 years or so ago, it would have been nearly impossible for volunteers to count salmon because there would have been too many to count. In working with islanders Jim and Elaine Scott on a recent land acquisition at the mouth of Judd Creek, Dean learned a lot about creek history. “They used to see huge runs of salmon here,” he said. “That’s not so very long ago, and it’s not entirely crazy to think that we could rebuild a portion of those runs with what we’re doing here.” — Kathryn True is a local writer and outreach coordinator for Vashon Nature Center. This article, the second in a short series featuring citizen science projects on Vashon, was written with funding from the Vashon Nature Center.

Lola L. Nass

JULY 29, 1921

TO

DECEMBER 18, 2013

Lola Louise Nass, age 92 years, of Seattle, Washington, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 18, 2013, in her home with family members by her side. Lola was born in Bloomfield, Nebraska, July 29, 1921, to Joseph and Blanche Gust. When she was an infant, Lola’s parents, older brother Norman Gust, and she, relocated to Alexandria, South Dakota, where they farmed the land and remained until March, 1938. By that time four more siblings were added to the family unit: Betty, Ellen, Earl and Janice Gust. Attending Alexandria High School in Alexandra, South Dakota, near the end of her junior year, Lola and family left their farm and drove from South Dakota to begin a new life on Vashon Island, Washington. Lola completed her junior and senior year at Vashon Island High School, graduating with the Class of 1939. On October 18, 1940, she married Henry Christian Nass, of Dockton, Washington, at the Vashon Lutheran Church (which is now the Heritage Museum on Bank Road). In the early 1940’s, Hank and Lola bought their first home on Cove Road from Mrs. Gorsuch. By the mid-1940’s they traded island life for that of the city by selling their Cove Road bungalow to purchase their Seattle home, where Lola lived for almost 70 years, until her death. She was widowed on June 3, 1984, when Henry died suddenly while they were on a fishing trip in British Columbia and she never remarried. Before starting her family with Hank, Lola enjoyed working outside the home in a variety of positions on Vashon Island, which included: waitressing at The Alibi; serving customers at the pharmacy’s soda fountain; beginning a coffee shop with her Aunt Alice (Gust) Hatchery. Her last paid position was in Seattle for the Washington Insurance Examining Bureau. Lola gave up her career and chose to be a “stay-at-home” mother in the late 1940’s. A member of the former Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Seattle, from its beginning, Lola walked in her Christian faith both inside and the outside of the church walls. A woman of strong character, she is remembered by most as always kind and full of grace, looking for the good in those with whom she encountered and delighting in serving others. Her love and appreciation for her country was only exceeded by her love of God and her family. Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Henry C. Nass, their infant daughter, Camille Marcelle Nass, brother, Norman Gust and sister, Betty (Gust) Larson. She is survived by her children, Thomas L. Nass of Covina, CA; Leah L. (Nass) Richardson of Seattle, WA; Dale J. Nass of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by her siblings, Ellen Chapman of Arizona; Earl Gust of California and Jancie Tanberg of Nevada. She was a Grandmother of six: Nicole Floyd, Adam Gabrielson, Brandon Nass, Zachary Nass, Thomas, Jr. “TJ” Nass, and Aaron Richardson; Great-grandmother of Parker and Caleb Gabrielson, Makayla and Braydon Nass, Cole Floyd, and two more great-grandchildren due in mid-2014. Lola is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Lola’s life will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014, 1 p.m., at Vashon Island Community Church, 9318 S.W. Cemetery Road, Vashon, WA 98070. A private graveside service will be held at Vashon Island Cemetery, Vashon, WA. Arrangements are by Island Funeral Service. The family suggests that memorials be made, in her name, to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Avenue N., Ste. 300, Seattle, WA 98109, or the charity of your choice. Please visit our online guestbook at www.islandfuneral.com.

Karl Osborne Steen Karl Osborne Steen passed away December 9, 2013 on Vashon Island, Washington. Karl was born on March 1, 1940, in Seattle, Washington to Frank and Gail Steen. Karl attended school on Vashon Island and in Cordova, Alaska, and graduated from Vashon Island High. Karl worked on a cattle ranch in eastern Oregon, and then went to Alaska to work at a herring reduction plant in Port Armstrong. Karl married the love of his life, Ruth Chowning, and they moved to Cordova, Alaska to raise their two sons. Karl opened his own business servicing engines for the Cordova fishing fleet. He later went to work for the State of Alaska until he retired in 1989. Many summers were spent commercial fishing with Ruth by his side. Karl also was involved in Ruth’s business, Steen’s Gifts, in Cordova. When they neared retirement age, Karl and Ruth left Cordova and moved back to Vashon Island where they built their dream home and took on the admirable duties of raising their twin grand-daughters Francesca Marie and Jonnelle Nadine Steen, known to all as Frankie and Jonnie. Karl was a past member of Elks International, Moose, Vashon Sportsman Club and the Vashon Yacht Club. Karl was proud of his Norwegian heritage, and was pleased to have met some of his relatives when they visited Cordova. Karl was also a gifted carpenter, mechanic, plumber, and electrician. He loved hunting and fishing in Prince William Sound with his sons and his friends. One of his early passions was flying; he was a skilled pilot, providing friends and family with many flying adventures. He was pleased that he was related to famed Alaskan Pioneer pilot Joe Crosson. Karl is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Robert and Karl (Tess) Steen, sister-in-law Jeanne Chowning, sister Kaye (Kim Graham)Steen, brother Mark (Lynne) Steen, granddaughters Frankie and Jonnie and their friends, plus numerous cousins in Washington and Alaska. As Karl and the family wished, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Vashon Community Care. Family and friends will remember Karl for his generosity of spirit, his ability to fix anything, his culinary skills, and his sense of humor. Ruth, his wife of 51 years, says, “Karl was larger than life and always made us feel safe and snug.”

Meet Akimi, Oh honestly, how come no one gets how important it is for us beauty queens to be the stars? Check out my fluffy fur, those dainty paws, my sparkling eyes and the sweet smile. Doesn’t that deserve the limelight? So if I get a bit snarly at other canine competition that wants to take my place, you’ll understand, right? I’ve got lots of energy and will protect you from all upstarts if you’ll give me the attention I crave. Come on, you won’t mind being upstaged by a dog – think of all the compliments you’ll get for owning a star!
