Port Townsend, Sierra Club criticize Navy over jet noise

Jason Park considers his blue and green Seattle Seahawks bracelet among his most treasured possessions.

There’s a sentimental attachment because it was made by his stepdaughter. But its value steeped in superstition far outweighs all others.

Park has worn the bracelet for every home Seahawks game the last two seasons, but couldn’t find it last Sunday when Seattle lost to the Arizona Cardinals for its first home loss in two years.

“Whenever there was a commercial break, he was trying to find it,” said his wife Drea Park.

Kelly Emerson will not seek re-election

Island County Commissioner Kelly Emerson announced over Christmas that she won’t seek reelection next year.

Emerson represents Island County’s District No. 3, which includes Camano Island and North Whidbey.

Transition students collect food for local children

Even when temperatures dipped during the second week of December, the chill didn’t deter students from their prime directive.

“It was really cold,” student Diamond Antoniou said.

“My fingers were purple.”

For the past two months, Oak Harbor High School Transition students collected food outside Alberstons and Saar’s Market Place Foods. The food will go to Back Packs for Hunger, a service project they started at the beginning of the school year.

“We started it because kids didn’t have food at their place,” Antoniou said.

During that cold week, one of the donators gave the students handwarmers so they be more comfortable while enduring frigid temperatures.

“It made my hands nice and warm,” Antoniou said.

From noon to 1 p.m. each Monday, the students hand a list to customers entering the stores with items they need.

The sheets they were handing out had “peanut butter” and “jelly” highlighted, since they didn’t have a lot back in the classroom. They had more than enough Top Ramen and macaroni and cheese stored in their classroom.

As the students strategically positioned themselves to intercept the most people entering the store, they still communicated and encouraged one other.

“Diamond, here comes somebody,” student Rachel Miller would say, as someone would walk to Antonious’s side.

Miller said it’s hard to talk to strangers, but it feels good once its over, especially if it results in a contribution.

“The first week (we were out here) we got a lot,” Miller said.

The most food the group has collected in one hour was three full tubs. They faired well on this trip, filling one tote full of food to stuff backpacks with later in the week.

The students won’t be out during their vacation from school, but Miller said they’ll be back at it once school starts again.

Transition class is for 18- to 21-year-old students who received special education services and are learning how to be independent adults working, living and recreating in the community, said Diane FeslerMacaluso, Transition coordinator.

The students brainstormed service project ideas and came up with providing backpacks filled with food for students at Broad View Elementary. Currently they are filling backpacks for five students to take home so they have enough food

Fesler-Macaluso said her students were responsible for all phases of the project. From requesting businesses’ permission to collect outside their store fronts, to picking the elementary school to help — this has been their own project.

“It is great initiative on their parts,” said Janet Tagge, Broad View Elementary School counselor.

Tagge receives the backpacks and then makes sure they go to students who need them.

Since the elementary school is close to the high school, it makes it easy for dropping off and picking up the backpacks.

“Other schools would love to have this program,” Tagge said.

The project also helps the students get out and talk to people, said Linda Lee, a paraeducator for Transition.

Donators sometimes leave items at the customer service counters for the students to pick-up, Lee said.

The businesses are great partners

and supportive of the project.

After collecting food, students packed the bags. Student Narrisa Backman helped other students efficiently pack. She said they needed to cram two weeks worth of food instead of one since schools would be on break. She went around with other students lifting the packs to make sure they weren’t too heavy for the elementary students to carry home.

In addition to volunteering for their own service project, the students work at an array businesses and nonprofits around town to improve their work skills. Some of the businesses and organizations include Salon 7, Wind and Tide Book Shop, Whidbey Animal Improvement Foundation and Hand-in-Hand Learning Center.

“We find places that are a good fit,” Fesler-Macaluso said.

To begin, the students have job coaches to help learn the ropes until an employer is comfortable with them working on their own. Then the teachers hold monthly evaluations to see how the student is doing.

“It’s a scaffolding technique,” Fesler-Macaluso said.

The goal is to keep building their skill set, Fesler-Macaluso said.

Each student has goals for what they want to do when they are finished with Transitions.

Could Camano Island become county’s fourth city?

The City of Camano?

To some, that has a nice ring. To others, not so much.

While opinions vary, an effort is under way to incorporate Camano Island, and supporters hope that by 2015 island residents will be making many more decisions for themselves.

“This is really about local control, getting people on Camano to have a bit more say on what happens at home,” said James McCafferty, a Camano resident and a member of the group working toward incorporation.

Formed about one year ago, the organization doesn’t have a formal name yet and is small with only about a dozen members. But it’s beginning to grow, said McCafferty, and their ranks now include one of the island’s most influential people — former longtime state senator Mary Margaret Haugen.

McCafferty is quick to point out, however, that the effort is not about her.

Residents exploring incorporation are politically diversified and not all were Haugen supporters, he said.

“This is not a Mary Margaret project,” McCafferty said.

Haugen is in full agreement. In a telephone interview recently, Haugen said she is enjoying retirement from decades of politics in Olympia — she was unseated in 2012 by Sen. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor — but did eagerly agree to help out when asked.

it’s a long way to Whidbey Island,” Haugen said.

Many see Camano as Whidbey’s often forgotten or overlooked twin sister, an island in the shadow of power. Decisions are made in Coupeville, the county seat, which is an hour-long drive from northern Camano.

According to Haugen, it’s 50 miles from her house and laws are crafted by people who have never even set foot on the island she calls home.

“You could be on the planning commission and make rules for us but have never been here,” she said.

“It’s about self governance,” she added.

If Bainbridge can do it Camano Island isn’t without a voice, however. Commissioner Kelly Emerson serves as District 3’s representative on the county’s highest decisionmaking body — the Board of Commissioners. But Haugen and McCafferty say representation on the board is one of the challenges of being so close yet so far away.

As just one of three votes, Camano’s commissioner is serving with two elected officials who represent Whidbey constituents. The potential is there for Whidbey’s

interest to receive priority, McCafferty said. Ironically, Emerson is the sole county commissioner who has voiced outright opposition to the effort.

“The only person who’s been negative about it has been Kelly Emerson,” he said.

The group recently met with Emerson and they claim she was less than supportive, a position the commissioner confirmed in a statement to The Record recently.

“As I am against the oppression that big government places on its people, clearly I would not be supporting the effort for the expansion of government on Camano Island,” she said.

Emerson also wrote in her October newsletter that incorporation would just result in “another layer of government.”

“More government equals more taxes,” Emerson wrote. “More taxes equals less interest in investing on Camano, more fleeing from Camano and Island County going deeper down the road of becoming a two-class society.”

She also called out Haugen’s involvement specifically, saying the former senator was “one of the strongest backers of the Growth Management Act” but that she is “now seeking a way

around the regulations for her homestead.”

Haugen acknowledged that Growth Management Act requirements would pose some problems for making the entire island one city, though she pointed out that it has been done successfully elsewhere.

Bainbridge Island, which was largely rural except for the city of Winslow, incorporated about four years ago.

According to Mayor Steve Bonkowski, the idea behind the effort was, again, to gain additional local control and be able to make wanted zoning changes in rural areas.

Approved by ballot measure, voters approved a request to expand Winslow to encompass the entire island and be renamed the City of Bainbridge. It passed narrowly with many outside Winslow wanting to remain rural Kitsap County residents, Bonkowski said.

“It was very close,” he said.

Also, due to the establishment of Winslow, the island already had fire and police departments, as well as school districts.

“We had a lot of the infrastructure already,” Bonkowski said.

One of the biggest headaches was finding funding for the 150 miles of road that snake across the island.

Its maintenance is now the responsibility of the city.

Bonkowski said part of the solution has been found in partnerships with the county and other municipalities in Kitsap County. Together they apply for regional monies for mutual benefit, he said.

According to Haugen, if

an island like Bainbridge can incorporate, so can Camano.

She added that Emerson’s opposition has not dampened the effort, but actually worked to legitimize the complaints about poor representation.

“I think it’s fueled the effort,” Haugen said.

Real problems or imagined According to McCafferty, Camano Island may not have an existing city, such as Winslow, but it does already have infrastructure, from fire and school districts to water and library districts. All those services will still exist if incorporation is successful, and what isn’t can be contracted out, McCafferty said.

He alleges it may actually be a financial benefit to both Whidbey and Camano, specifically concerning law enforcement. The Island County Sheriff’s Office has

complained in recent years of budget cuts and manpower shortages. Reducing its scope may help cut down on expenses, such as hauling those arrested on Camano to Whidbey jails.

“This may be financially smart,” McCafferty said.

Sheriff Mark Brown isn’t too sure. Running an effective law enforcement office so far away “certainly is a challenge for me,” said Brown, but contracting services out or starting a new department will be equally challenging.

But Brown says they have bigger problems ahead, particularly becoming an urban growth area, or UGA, one of the precursors for incorporation.

“I think law enforcement would the least of their problems,” Brown said.

CAMANO CONTINUED FROM A4 light from the commissioners. He also said a Camano Island city wouldn’t need to start its own police department, that it could contract out with Stanwood police or Snohomish County, which proposed taking over law enforcement on the island a few years ago.

Many are against the incorporation effort, said McCafferty, because of inaccurate assumptions.

That includes requirements for UGAs and the need to have existing services.

“You don’t have to do all that, you don’t,” he said.

There are very specific steps, however, that must be taken. Camano must first be designated a UGA. A feasibility study would follow and then a percentage of voters who participated in

the last election would need to sign a petition to put it on a future ballot. Only then would island residents get to vote on the measure.

It would not be the first time. The same measure was overwhelmingly defeated in 1991 when 2,569 people voted against the proposal. Just 334 voted in favor of it. Haugen, however, says times have changed and that Camano Islanders are much more receptive to the idea today.

“It was a totally different island,” Haugen said.

McCafferty is equally optimistic but said there is still much research that needs to be done to determine whether incorporation is really best for Camano.

“We want to see a rational model on what this really means,” McCafferty said.

“It has to be something that’s good for both sides of the water,” he added.

By JERRY CORNFIELD A preview of coming attractions and distractions for lawmakers next year can be found in the pile of legislation awaiting them when they return to Olympia in January.

There have been 59 bills filed early — 38 in the House and 21 in the Senate — dealing with specialty license plates and protecting hospital employees from violent criminals, as well as naming a state waterfall and ensuring natural disasters don’t shut down government.

Here’s a sample of new laws House and Senate members are already pushing: One overpass, hold the art: There’s a move afoot to end the prettification of bridges, overpasses, sound walls and off-ramps. House Bill 2092 would bar state transportation agencies from spending public funds to “acquire works of art” or make “decorative finishes or designs that are not integral to the function of a transportation structure.”

Washington Pot & Trust: Who better to handle the cash for the pot industry than the state, right? Senate Bill 5955 creates a publicly owned trust to “act as the sole depository for in-state marijuana producers, processers, and retailers and to use taxable earnings from those deposits for the benefit of the people and economy of the state.”

All in the cannabis family: You won’t get high off hemp but you might make money selling oils, clothes and other products made from this variety of cannabis sativa.

Senate Bill 5954 sets the rules for a new industrial hemp industry. Growers will need licenses and pay fees, and those dollars would be deposited in the proposed publiclyowned trust.

Specialty collegiate plates: The University of Washington has a specialty license plate. So do Washington State University and Gonzaga. Seattle University may be next. That’s the idea behind House Bill 2100 which would direct proceeds from any sales into a student scholarship fund.

A layer of protection: When a person suspected or convicted of a violent crime is brought to a hospital for care, sometimes they attack nurses or other employees.

Under Senate Bill 5968, these potentially violent individuals must be accompanied by a law enforcement officer or guard at all times during the visit.

Don’t stand in front of the bus

Editor, After seeing the disgruntled group of Outlying Field Coupeville protesters pictured on the front page of a Seattle newspaper on Dec. 23 and reading a myriad of letters on the OLF topic, I wish to express some views of my own.

It has become abundantly clear that the major issue is home values and not “noise.” Folks who bought homes in Admiral’s Cove did so because of a couple of reasons, very affordable prices as opposed to other areas and the great view of the Olympics and the sound.

When my wife and I first moved here in 1980, one of the first areas we considered was Admiral’s Cove — very affordable, nice homes, great views.

But our realtor said that it could be a very noisy area in that there is a Navy airfield nearby and to “come down here when the planes are flying.” The realtor told us that the home we were interested in had a $5,000 “bounty” she would be paid by the seller if she sold the home, apparently for that very rea-

son, noise. Just the other evening I had a friend and former realtor tell me that one of the people that is always complaining in the Whidbey News-Times about the noise was in the process of buying a home in Admiral’s Cove in 1985. This realtor advised him that it was very noisy down there (around OLF and surrounding area), but the person bought a home there anyway because of the price and said “the noise wouldn’t be a big deal.” Apparently he has changed his tune.

The fact is that these same folks are the same type who buy near a major airport, train tracks and gun ranges and then complain about the noise. They’re not kidding anyone, they bought because of lower home values.

The same idea goes for the people who got the Kettle’s Trail built and then complained about the seasonal hunting there. They refuse even to stop using the trail during the short hunting season and then using it the other major portion of the year. No, they wanted hunting banned all together. (No, I am not a deer hunter.)

Additionally how does one group get off calling itself “Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve?” Isn’t that Federal Park Land and how many actually live on that land? One comment has been made

about the Commissioners “throwing us (COER) under the bus?” No, not true at all, for you stood in front of the bus and got run over because you didn’t do your homework like the rest of us. We bought in Dugualla Bay; yes, another “noise zone” but our realtor gave us a map showing the area and what we could expect from plane noise.

We made an informed decision, and bought based on all the facts.

As for noise, our Navy aviators are training so you will not be subjected to the noise of enemy bombs dropping, rockets and bullets flying into your home. Yes, and roadside bombs can be quite noisy as well. Never heard one but they are quite loud.

And you say “We are not against the Navy.” You say you are not, but if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it probably is a duck. So don’t say you are not against the Navy because you sure sound like it since you have filed a lawsuit against the Navy. It would seem to me that you should be making a case against your realtor who ill advised, or worse, didn’t advise you like mine did back in 1980, against buying near OLF. At 12:05 p.m., a caller reported a road rage incident on S.E. Bayshore Drive. The driver of a blue Sedan went into reverse and backed into a Scion.

At 12:19 p.m., there was a report that an “aggressive resident” at a S.W. Sixth Avenue facility slapped staff members and hit another resident.

At 1:31 p.m., a caller reported being chased down by two dogs in the N.W. Rigging Street neighborhood.

House Bill 2121 would require every elected official to complete a training course within 90 days of taking office.

When voters fill the unexpired term of a partisan county office, as they will for Snohomish County executive next year, a primary is held even if only one candidate files.

Under House Bill 2106, no primary would be held in such instances.

The candidate must still go before voters in November in case a writein candidate surfaces.

In the event of an emergency: Washington’s constitution lays out how government

will operate in an “emergency resulting from enemy attack.” It doesn’t mention other emergencies like a natural disaster.

Moore

Dorothy Fowler Moore

Dorothy Fowler Moore, 93, died peacefully at her home in Coupeville on Dec. 19, surrounded by members of her family. Her death came 75 years and one day after her marriage to Carl C. Moore.

Dorothy was born on May 27, 1920, in Walla Walla to Opal and Felix Fowler.

She and her brothers and sisters grew up on a farm near LaCrosse in Whitman County, Wash.

She attended schools in LaCrosse, where she was a top student, active in sports and student activities.

Following graduation from LaCrosse High School in 1937, she attended Kinman Business College in Spokane and worked as a bookkeeper for the Brownie Baking Company in Spokane.

On Dec.18, 1938, Dorothy and Carl were married in Spokane.

They had known each other from childhood, and Carl was also attending Kinman. Dorothy and Carl lived in Spokane, where Carl worked as a bookkeeper and purchasing agent for Inland Empire Rural Electrification, until 1941.

Carl was then hired as manager of the Stevens County Rural Electric Cooperative in Colville, Wash. They lived

at Colville from 1941 until 1952. Their sons, Michael, Richard and William, were born during their Colville years. Dorothy was active in the Colville Congregational Church, Eastern Star and Colville community activities.

In 1952, the family moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where Dorothy lived for the next 46 years and where their daughter, Judith, was born.

In Lewiston, Carl was active in business, served four terms in the Idaho State Legislature, was manager of the Port of Lewiston and was chairman of the Idaho Transportation Department for several years.

Dorothy was active in Lewiston’s CongregationalPresbyterian Federated Church, where she was a long-time member of the Women’s Association and served several terms on the church board.

She was a member of a garden club, the Pollyanna Community Club and the League of Women Voters of Lewiston, and was awarded a life membership in the Orchards School ParentTeacher Association in recognition of her many years with the PTA. Dorothy also served for many years as a 4-H Club leader and received a lifetime award for her work. Dorothy was an active member of the Democratic Party, serving several terms as an elected county precinct committee member.

She worked on her husband’s legislative campaigns and in statewide campaigns for U.S. Senator Frank Church and Idaho Governor Cecil Andrus, among others.

Dorothy worked as a secretary for the Hundrup Insurance Agency in Lewiston to help with her children’s college expenses.

College in Lewiston, where she pursued her life-long passion for painting. She also made quilts of artistic design for each of her children.

Dorothy had a deep love of reading and learning, which she instilled in all of her children.

Dorothy and Carl traveled extensively, both in Carl’s work and after his retirement. They visited many parts of the United States and made two visits to ancestral homes in Gloustershire, England.

After Carl’s death in 1993, Dorothy continued living in the family home in Lewiston.

In 1998, she moved to Coupeville, where her daughter and her family lived.

Coupeville was Dorothy’s home for the last 15 years of her life. She was an active member of the Coupeville United Methodist Church and made many good friends through her church and P.E.O. activities.

The center of Dorothy’s life, however, was her family.

She outlived her own parents and all of her sisters and brothers, but continued to attend annual gatherings of her extended family as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Michael Moore (Linda Schrock) of Boise, Idaho, Richard Moore (Andrea) of Spokane, William Moore (Jonelle) of Mesa, Ariz., and Judith Moore (Jim Short) of Coupeville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Dorothy was Friday, Dec. 27, at LaCrosse. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the Coupeville United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that memorials be given to Coupeville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or, for contributions to support young women in education, to the P.E.O. Star Scholarship, c/o P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.

Fred Shepard

Former State Farm agent Fred Shepard passed away on Dec. 17, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Fred is survived by his beloved wife Shirley, daughter Tracey (husband Kevin Brown), son Brian (wife Marci Vickery), grandsons Tyson and Colton Shepard and numerous siblings and extended family members from his Ohio birthplace.

Fred truly embodied the “good neighbor” philosophy while operating his Oak Harbor State Farm agency from 1983 through his retirement in 2009. Fred’s agency was a community resource, where Fred and Shirley supported local charities, doled out advice and took more than a few folks under their wing.

Fred was a member of the Masons and the Lion’s Club and a volunteer with wife Shirley at the Whidbey Playhouse. He was legendary for his extensive knowledge of trivial facts and his sense of humor.

If the measure of a man’s life is how he treated others or the number of times he made people smile or how much he was loved, then Fred Shepard’s life was an immeasurable success.

A family service was held on Dec. 20. In lieu of flowers, please honor Fred by giving to your favorite children’s charity.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Gabriel Ferguson.

Peter was born in Seattle to Edwin and Helen Guthrie and was a veteran of World War II, serving as an infantryman and driver. He loved the family place on Whidbey Island, Wash. and visited as often as he could.

Peter spent most of his adult life in Northfield, Minn., where he taught psychology and ser ved twice as department chair at Carleton College from 1960 until 1992.

His interests were in the nature, causes and treatment of developmental delay, the history and treatment of people with mental retardation and the areas of cognition, motivation and learning.

His passion for psychology was contagious, and he inspired and mentored many students with his positive attitude, holding as a high priority doing what was needed to bring out their best work.

Peter loved the outdoors and spent much of his free time outside, walking and biking in clement weather, cross-country skiing in the winter, sailing, hiking and camping.

His love of travel brought him repeatedly to explorations of Europe, Canada and Mexico.

He was known for his good humor and cheerful manner, his humility and compassion. He had a great love of reading, a fondness for world music, sea shanties and cowboy songs, photography, wood-and canvas-working and caring deeply and actively for his community.

A special thank you to the Northfield Care Center, where Peter resided for the last months of his life in the loving care of this special place.

The memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Carleton Chapel with a reception at the Carleton Great Hall after the service.

Memorials are preferred to the Northfield Union of Youth.

Jeannette Norman

Jeannette I. Norman passed away in her sleep Monday morning, Dec. 16, 2013, at her residence in Seattle.

Jeannette was born to Francois Xavier Lizotte and Helene Gaudette Lizotte on March 16, 1925, in Nashua, N.H. She lived in Nashua until her marriage to Ward T. Norman on March 18, 1946.

Together they found their way to Fairbanks, Alaska, where they homesteaded in 1948.

In 1956 they relocated to Huachuca City, Ariz., where Ward took employment with civil service.

In 1959 Jeannette and Ward settled in Oak Harbor, where they lived for 44 years.

Jeannette was active in the St. Augustines catholic church in Oak Harbor.

She also enjoyed square dancing with the Whidbey Whirlers.

She worked at A&H Hardware in Oak Harbor in the 1970s, and was a telephone operator in Nashua in the early 1940s.

Jeannette was welltraveled, and made friends where ever she went.

Jeannette and Ward raised three children, Judy, Clyde and Clay. Jeannette always displayed patience and tolerance, looking for and trusting she would find good in all and helping those in need.

She was strong willed, practical, intelligent, caring, accepting, wise, understanding and loving of all that is.

Jeannette was preceded in death by her husband, Ward; daughter, Judy; son, Clyde; and her sisters, Joan Dietrich and Lorraine Vendetti.

Jeannette will be missed by her son Clayton of Seattle; her brothers, Donald Lizotte of Loveland, Colo., and Gerald Lizotte of Fairbanks, Alaska; her three grandchildren, Marc Norman of Blaine, Collin Hooper of Richland and Kayla Norman of Tucson, Arizona; and one great-grandchild.

At Jeannette’s request there will be no formal services held in her honor.

’Cats win 3 individual titles at Morin Tournament

Three individual champions led the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team to a fourth-place finish in the 12-team Graham Morin Invitational at Squalicum High School in Bellingham Saturday, Dec. 21.

The Wildcats put in a solid showing even though they did not enter wrestlers in two of the weight classes. In all, eight of the 12 Oak Harbor wrestlers who competed placed in the top six.

Oak Harbor finished with 176 points, trailing Snohomish (252), Port Angeles (224.5) and Ferndale (191).

Cedarcrest followed Oak Harbor with 122 points, then came Nooksack Valley (95), Snohomish No. 2 (86), Bothell (81.5), Lynden (71), Woodinville (55), Sehome (49) and Squalicum (44).

Though Snohomish won the tournament, all three Oak Harbor wrestlers who captured titles defeated Panthers in the finals.

Jeremy Vester (132 pounds) defeated Keaton Mills 6-2, Jahleel Vester (138) thumped Noah Bomar 14-0

and Kekai Tarrant (170) blanked Mark Currier 4-0.

Mark Johnston (160) also reached the finals where he fell to Cedarcrest’s Ely Malametz.

Both Christian Bertram (113) and Jackson Constant (285) lost in the semifinals but eventually placed third.

Earning fourths were Jacob Dugin (195) and Sebastian Ceaser (152), missing the finals by one point.

Ray Quinday (220) nabbed sixth.

Oak Harbor coach Peter Esvelt said, “We had some great performances from guys who have been quiet so far this year – namely Tarrant, Dugin and Ceaser.

It was a great team effort with everyone cheering each other on.”

“We have a long break to work on a lot of needed improvements before we wrestle again at the Everett Classic on Jan. 4,” he added.

In the Washington Wrestling Reports’ 3A state rankings Dec. 15, Jahleel Vester was ranked third in his weight class; Constant was ninth; and Bertram, Jeremy Vester and Johnston were 11th.

Emily Huffer places in 6 events at finals Emily Huffer placed in all six of her events at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Washington State Senior Short Course Championships Dec. 19-22 at Federal Way. Huffer, who is from Oak Harbor and competes for the Bellingham Bay Swim Team, helped BBST finish eighth out of 46 teams at the meet.

By finishing in the top eight in her six events, Huffer, 17, placed 10th overall in the girls division.

NW Aquatic Club sends 6 to PNS meet Six North Whidbey Aquatic Club members competed at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Championships Dec. 13-15 in Federal Way and helped NWAC place 26th out of 51 teams.

NWAC was led by junior squad member Olivia Tungate, 13, who placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.98), fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.94), seventh in the 100 fly (59.92), eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:14.7), ninth in the 100 back (1:01.77) and 11th in the 400 IM (4:45.54). Oak Harbor sisters cook up idea to help those from community in need

It was her oldest sister’s idea. And to Taylor Marrs, it was a good one.

What better way for a 3-year-old to spend time than to sit at the kitchen table with her two big sisters and spread thick slabs of frosting on dozens of sugar cookies.

Taylor was taking the job seriously, using a little extra force to apply sprinkles.

“Mom, Taylor broke the sprinkles,” 7-year-old Lauren Marrs shouted from across the table.

But the avalanche of sprinkles kept coming, nearly burying one cookie.

“That’s a lot of sprinkles!”

Lauren said.

“I hope people like sprinkles,” added 11-year-old Jaden Marrs.

It was Jaden’s idea to make these cookies.

An idea that blew her father away.

She didn’t want to bake the cookies for her family.

She wanted to bake them and give them to those less fortunate in the Oak Harbor community.

This is one family’s act of kindness to brighten, and sweeten, the lives of others.

The Marrs family baked and frosted 20 dozen sugar cookies, wrapped them and gave them out as gifts on Christmas Eve to those who

First Community Christmas event offered food, company to those in need

The quality of the first Community Christmas won out over quantity.

Only about 40 people showed up for the first event on Christmas Day at the Odd Fellows Hall in Oak Harbor.

However, the experience was “absolutely” a success, according to Melissa Riker, one of the event’s organizers.

Two free meals were served to the community at the event with food provided

by Flyers Restaurant and Brewery. About 10 meals

also were delivered to people’s homes.

The idea to try to keep people in the community from spending Christmas alone came from Ryan Wallin, owner of Ronsons Design & Construction. A small group put the event together in less than a month.

The Community Christmas started with a biscuits and gravy breakfast and later included a chili and cornbread lunch.

“We had people coming in right away,” Riker said.

“We had a lot of food. We had some people donate some clothes at the last

minute and blankets and winter kinds of things like gloves and hats and people came in and got some clothes off the racks. It was really great.”

Riker said that there was plenty of leftover food, which was donated to the Spin Cafe, a food kitchen down-

town that serves free meals two nights a week.

Riker said she was pleasantly surprised by the number of volunteers who called her and wanted to help. She said she and Wallin already are planning to meet to discuss plans for the 2014 event.

Kory Dyer, a 2002 Oak Harbor High School graduate, organized the event on Facebook and said his 25 initial invitations ballooned to 1,000 in two weeks.

He said friend Teresa Besaw of Oak Harbor came up with the idea and he ran with it.

“Deception Pass is one of those iconic images,” he said, adding that he’s gotten responses from about 100 people who said they’d be attending, including some recognizable fans from Seattle.

“It’s a good location. Everybody knows it, even if they’re not from the island.”

The Parks wouldn’t miss it.

They’re diehard fans who dress up in elaborate Seahawks costumes at every opportunity.

Jason Park, a maintenance officer at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, and his wife both became fans after attending a game and getting caught up in the hysteria at Century Link Field.

“It was the vibe of the 12th man,” Drea Park said.

The game faces stay on even when they watch the action on television from their home near Cornet Bay.

Drea said her husband follows a specific pregame routine that involves waking up at a certain time, showering, shaving and then brushing his teeth only with a Seahawks toothbrush.

He’ll put on Seahawks socks then dress with a Russell Wilson jersey, but not until just before kickoff.

“He was trying to get a new Earl Thomas one but it sold out right away,” Drea said.

Dyer said he grew up a Seahawks fan and anticipates a strong showing against the Rams and continued success this season.

But first, he’ll focus on making sure Saturday’s event of showing Seahawks support goes well.

Dyer is asking that flags be hung on the bridge’s westside so that they will be visible for a photo from the beach below.

“I’ve been pushing for everybody to be responsible, be respectful and be patient,” Dyer said, adding that safety is top priority.

“It’s going to be a fun event. I plan to be the last one to leave to make sure it’s all cleaned up.”

Jack Hartt, park manager at Deception Pass State Park, said he was unaware of Saturday’s event. He said his only concerns were safety and traffic congestion; he planned to make the Department of Transportation aware.

“The DOT doesn’t like surprises,” Hartt said.

The city of Port Townsend has also voiced concern about jet noise and its lack of inclusion in the Navy’s EIS process, according to Port Townsend Mayor David King.

“We didn’t even know there was an EIS,” King said Thursday.

King said he was also unaware that the deadline for public input, Jan. 3, is fast approaching. King said he was in the process of discussing the issue with the city manager and city council members to see how the city wants to respond.

Several tests reportedly took place this summer over Port Townsend and Port Angeles, prompting both cities to ask the Navy for more proactive notices of the tests.

Meetings to take testimony in the preparation of the EIS happened in Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Anacortes earlier this month, but no meeting was scheduled on the North Olympic Peninsula or at any other location.

King said he plans to push for an extension of the comment period.
