Animators bring motion art to Langley
BIGcomesGIVING in all sizes
By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record For all the art forms in Langley, animation is a new addition. Drew Christie, Amanda Moore and Dane Herforth, all animators at Kalakala Co., recently opened a combination store and studio in the Langley Village suite formerly occupied by The Record. Christie, the lead artist and animator, keeps almost 30 sketchbooks in the store for customers and visitors to peruse. They show the tiny storyboards he made for some of the animated shorts he has produced, like “Allergy to Originality,” featured on the New York Times’ Op-Doc section. His short films have been screened at the Sundance Film Festival, and have won awards at the New York Children’s Film Festival, Ashland Independent Film Festival, and MOHAI History is _____ Film Competition. The Stranger, an alternative weekly publication in Seattle, nominated Christie for a Seattle Genius award in 2012 for his body of work in animation. “If I can draw all day long, that’s what I’d do,” he said. Several years ago, Christie started in filmmaking. He moved to animation because it allowed him greater control and manipulation of a scene everything from characters to setting and lighting. “I was sick of trying to get my friends to be in my movies,” he said. The upstairs section of their leased space is where the animation magic happens. Christie’s desk, a former drawing board used by SEE ANIMATORS, A5

Anchor Books & Coffee, one of the last meeting places and morning watering holes in Clinton, will make its last cup of joe Dec. 30. Owners Bruce and Trish Didier, Clinton residents themselves, announced Dec. 1 they would close the cafe and used book store. For the past several months, they tried to sell the business on Highway 525, but to no avail. “We just don’t have the time to devote to the management of the store,” said Bruce Didier. “And it’s not proving to be profitable, and not something we can continue to subsidize.” The Didiers — Bruce works in construction and Trish is a second-grade teacher at Coupeville Elementary School — opened the shop in May 2011 to much acclaim after the ferry area went without a sit-down cafe for years. It became a go-to place for Clinton residents to grab a latte and thumb through old paperbacks while chatting with neighbors and friends. Didier said there are 600 people signed up for trade credit through Anchor Books & Coffee. But business was hitand-miss, said one of the store’s employees who called the ferry a blessing and a curse. “When it’s slow, it feels extra slow,” employee Matt Bell said. “There has

Two citizen groups take aim at Commissioner Johnson Leader questions her Christian values, Navy support By JANIS REID South Whidbey Record Representatives of two citizens groups that complained about Navy jet noise took aim at Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson on Monday. Michael Monson, president of Coupeville-based Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, or COER, and Garrett Newkirk, member of North-end group Concerned Citizens of Island County, took turns reading a letter to commissioners calling Johnson’s recent letter of support for the Navy “misleading and inappropriate.” Also reading was COER member Catherine Andrews. Johnson presented her letter of support for the Navy and its operations, along with an economic impact study, to base commander Capt. Mike Nortier during one of last week’s public scoping meetings for the Environmental Impact Statement on the Navy’s new EA-18G Growler. In their prepared comments, Monson and Newkirk said that Johnson’s written support “was not voted on by the Board of Island County Commissioners. Neither does it represent the opinion of all or most of the citizens of Whidbey Island.” In their letter, they said a main concern of the antinoise group is Johnson’s use of official Island County stationery to write her letter of support for the Navy and its operations. “Commissioner Johnson has the right to express her personal opinion; however, using her title of com-

Price Johnson agreed, adding that she herself has written similar letters. It is common for commissioners to do so as long as they make it clear it is a personal opinion and not the consensus of the board, Price Johnson said. Johnson said the anti-noise groups’ public criticism is “gamesmanship” intended to “shake her up.” “It’s just a tactic designed to get under my skin and get a rise out of me,” Johnson said. Commissioner Kelly Emerson was absent from
Monday’s meeting. About a dozen anti-noise group members attended the commissioners’ regular meeting. The groups’ open letter about Johnson was addressed to U.S. Navy Admiral Bill Gortney, Ted Brown, EA-18G Growler environmental study project manager, and Nortier. “Please understand that Johnson is not speaking for many citizens in Oak Harbor and across Whidbey Island,” the letter said. “Many citizens, including the growing number of those in the undersigned organizations, do not now and will never accept as a reality the hazardous levels of noise saturating our communities from Growler operations. “Johnson simply does not speak for us on this issue.” In her response to the groups’ statement, Johnson referred to an email from Monson calling into question her Christian values because she is a Navy supporter. In the November email, Monson also accused Johnson of putting the needs of the business community

before the safety of residents. “As a practicing Christian, how do you justify putting economic interests before the health and well-being of fellow humans?,” Monson wrote. “Don’t your Christian principles take a higher authority? “Mine do, I live my faith every day, not just Sunday,” Monson wrote. “I find that
a very strange thing for you to do. Don’t your fellow human beings come before the greedy desires of the business community? How can you possibly justify this? You no longer work for the (Oak Harbor) Chamber of Commerce.” Monson, who described himself as a devout Christian, defended his email Tuesday. He said he didn’t intend it to be a “below the belt comment,” but simply a question “from one Christian to another.” Johnson said Monday she can very easily reconcile her Christian values with Navy support because she believes “poverty is cruel.” Some Navy supporters said they fear that a closure of OLF Coupeville would place NAS Whidbey at risk of closure, putting thousands of people out of work, Johnson said. COER filed a lawsuit against the Navy in July asking a judge to compel the Navy to complete an EIS on the Growler, which the group claims is louder than previous aircraft.
The group is calling for a closure of Outlying Field Coupeville, where carrier landing practices are conducted. The Navy announced plans to complete an EIS in July, but said plans for the study have been in the works for some time. The Navy has also conceded that it exceeded estimated touchand-gos at Outlying Field in Coupeville by about 3,000 over the past two years. Touch-and-go operations were suspended in May for 2013, but the Navy has announced plans to resume the operations in January. “I’ve weighed all the facts and right now my focus is the impact this will have on our economy,” Johnson said Tuesday. “I’m not turning my back on people who are affected, but … my priority is protecting this economy. “If there are ways to mitigate the effects, let’s do it, but I will discuss that at the appropriate time, in the appropriate place… which is not grandstanding at a microphone,” Johnson said.

The Wave Venture powers through Admiralty Inlet to repair fiber optic cables.
Big boat fixes Admiralty Inlet cable By NathaN WhaleN South Whidbey Record A large ship floating for more than a week near the Coupeville-to-Port Townsend ferry route piqued the curiosity of nearby residents. It turns out the Wave Venture, a 464-foot vessel owned by United Kingdombased Global Marine Systems, has been sailing in the area while its crew repairs fiber optic cables. Raymond Loe, who lives in the Teronda West area on Central Whidbey, said he noticed the vessel about a week-and-a-half ago. He said the ship sparked his curiosity as he and his wife would watch the Wave Venture and several smaller tugs work in the area day and night.
Anne Leboutillier, head of marketing for Global Marine Systems, said there are several reasons a break in a cable line can occur. Such breaks can be caused by a ship’s anchor, fishing trawlers or severe weather. Eighty percent of cable faults are caused by fishing and shipping activities, according to information provided by Global Marine Systems. Remaining breaks are caused by natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, waves and sea currents. Crews use remotely operated vehicles to search for and help locate breaks in the cable. They also cut the area of the cable to bring it back to the ship so repairs can be made, Leboutillier said. The depth of Admiralty
Inlet in the area where the work was done, the speed of the currents and tidal conditions posed problems for repair work, she added. “It sounds likes it’s been a very challenging repair,” Leboutillier said. Roe said the Wave Venture sailed from Admiralty Inlet on Thursday evening. According to Leboutillier, 98 percent of the world’s communications is transmitted through fiber optic cables. That information includes financial and corporate information, social media and telephone calls. Global Marine Services has a 160-year history of working with telecommunications, oil and gas and energy industries. The company manages a worldwide fleet of cable repair vessels.

There’s also space for Herforth, who assists Christie with animation, and for Moore, who plans to set up a sewing station. While Christie, Moore and Herforth earn a living from their animation projects, which include commercials and commissioned projects like a piece for Vanity Fair
that illustrates the 1940s, the store is a new enterprise. “It’s a good way to showcase our work,” Moore said. Though open just two weeks, the store has attracted a bit of interest from passersby and other business owners in Langley. During a recent visit before the store opened, a few people came in and wanted to see what Kalakala Co. offered. “Everyone seems to be very interested and supportive of us,” Christie said. The Kalakala Co. crew had plans to reciprocate that interest with ideas to host animation workshops that include live demonstrations. For now, they are busy working on a couple of com-

mercials and engaging a new community with their moving art. “Humans love seeing artwork and seeing the world through someone else’s vision,” Christie said. They are also just the type of working professionals city leaders have hoped to attract to town. Christie is 29 years old, Moore is 32, and Herforth is 25. Attracting young “knowledge workers,” people who can do their job anywhere, to move to and work in Langley was an emphasis of recent economic forums organized by city leaders. It seems that goal is beginning to be realized with the opening of Kalakala Co., though it did
not require much pandering or advertising. “Drew and I have always been charmed by Whidbey,” said Moore, Christie’s partner. They also needed more space than Seattle afforded them, making Langley an attractive alternative. The locally-owned bookstores, the music shops, even the architecture attracted them to the seaside city. Along with the animation studio, Kalakala Co., a street-level shop near P.S. Suisse and the liquor store in Langley Village, also offers several products, though product is probably too industrial a term. They have $28 tote bags that are decorated with abstract designs, screen-printed cards for $7.50, prints and original pieces of Christie’s art for as much as $300. They also have tea towels — two for $20 — which have an abstract design as well. A tea towel is a piece of cloth that can be used as an apron, for drying produce after it is washed and to keep baked goods warm. “Nobody knows what a tea towel is, but they’re our best seller,” Moore said. “Everything is for sale, except the sketchbooks.” Kalakala Co., named for a decommissioned ship of the Washington State Ferries system, uses an open space office. A projector plays animation clips onto the back wall, which serves as a sampling of their work for drop-in customers. They wanted to make sure to thank Jess Marie Griffith, who set up the store including its branch fixtures which hang some of the wares. Mike Johnson handles the screenprinting.

This Christmas, we wish for ...
It’s Christmas morning and people all over the world are opening presents. While the true joy of this tradition is in the giving, getting is fun too. Here’s what we were hoping to find under the tree. Kimberlly Winjum, associate publisher I always ask for my favorite perfume — which lasts me all year — Calvin Klein Euphoria. I’m also hoping for flannel pajama pants because they are comfy and that’s what I hang out in at home. Finally, I want a small George Foreman grill. I used it to death when they first came out and would love to have a smaller version again. Ben Watanabe, reporter At the top of my list, Santa, is a new telephoto lens for my Canon Rebel. It would help capture the action at South Whidbey sporting events and account for my shaky hands. Next, I would like a full tackle box and a lighter fishing pole with better action, even though the stiff rod defined my arms pretty well as I hit Bush Point at least three times a week this season. A gym membership would be great, but it would also need to come with the motivation to use it. Celeste Erickson, reporter Dear Santa, This year for Christmas I would like Beyonce’s new album in my Christmas stocking. My annual Christmas wish came early this year with another great Beyonce and Jay-Z duet, so thank you, Santa, for that Christmas miracle. I also would like treats year round. Please inspire our publisher, Kim Winjum, to make those oh-so delicious candied pecans and cookie trays every-so-often. Also, no more sudden deaths of my favorite characters on Downton Abbey, please. The season ended nearly a year ago, but I’m still distraught. Nancy Waddell, volunteer proofreader More commas, fewer apostrophes! More hours in the day. A home for everyone. Mayor’s beat Centennial reflections By FRED McCARTHY South Whidbey Record As Langley’s Centennial Year of 2013 draws to a close, there were many things in the city that were accomplished. Our Centennial year was characterized by the dedicated volunteer efforts of many people who gave generously of their time, talent and treasure to the city. It’s always risky to name individuals because inevitably someone important will be left out, but here goes anyway. The history of the city was told and celebrated by many volunteers in presentations, tours, dramatic interpretive plays, publications and events. A guardian and curator of our history, Bob Waterman, led the way for many of these memorable activities. Janet Ploof, Bernita Sanstead, Val Easton, Cathy Rooks, Jim Sundberg and others tended the City Hall edible garden. From the crew at The Record, happy holidays. It’s also clear that restricted development of residential properties within certain noise zones on Whidbey Island is the responsibility of local government and not the Navy. Therefore unbiased logic would lead most people to conclude that the local activists are gunning for the wrong target. But, then, perhaps they have ulterior motives they’re afraid to admit. Individuals like Steve Trembly voluntarily mowed Seawall Park, and guerrilla painters, such as Tucker Stevens and John Lawson of the Langley Men’s Club, painted the temporary railing near the slide area on Cascade and put up a new sign in Generation Park. Miriam Coates led a Feed the Children initiative in Langley Park. Sharen Heath told many of the people stories and events of Langley in her informative “I Love Langley” blog. Three well-organized economic forums were hosted by two city council members, Rene Neff and Bruce Allen, and an incoming council member, Margot Jerome. Over 100 individuals attended one of the three forums and expressed statements of hope and optimism about the future. We finished the First Street water project, paved two streets — Anthes and Langley Road — and supported the Port of South Whidbey in completing waterline and marina improvements. It was a successful year for our 100th birthday year as a city. So much more happened and I invite others to share the parts I left out. We are excited about what the future holds for our city.

Freshman pin hands Falcon wrestling a win By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Seth Schille, a Falcon freshman, didn’t know what winning his 120-pound-class match would mean for the wrestling team but his coaches did. If he pinned his opponent, his points would and did secure a victory for South Whidbey over Lakewood on Thursday night. “I didn’t realize until after the match when the coaches told me,” Schille said. “We were sorta going back and forth a little bit.” Schille, the second-to-last match of the night, took to the mat against Lakewood’s Matthew Ramirez. It was an even bout through the first period after neither could gain the upper hand for a takedown. Starting in the down position in the second period, Schille stood up and broke Ramirez’s grasp, getting a point before quickly shooting at his legs for a takedown. In a matter of seconds, Schille had Ramirez on his back for the pin, and the South Whidbey win. “It was an exciting match,” said Falcon head coach Jim Thompson. “Dual meets are hard, they’re brutal.” Falcon freshman Hunter Newman opened the meet with a forfeit win in the 132. The easy win put South Whidbey ahead, which the Falcons added to in the next few bouts. Senior Tyler Russell pinned Michaela Jackson, 132 pounds, in 1:57, just before the first period’s time was up. Lakewood gained its first points in the 145-pound match. Lakewood’s Drake Mosteller pinned Donnie Sutton in 1:02. Then came two of South Whidbey’s most consistent weight classes this season, which have nearly guaranteed victories. In the 152, Falcon senior Andy Madsen made quick work of Lakewood’s Austin Hudson, pinning him in 45 seconds. Madsen has seven pins in seven matches. Kyrell Broyles, also a Falcon senior, followed suit by pinning Lakewood’s Brett Gustaf in 1:31 in the 160-pound match. Lakewood’s Gage Gilberston won the 170-pound match over Falcon senior Calvin Shimada, who has been ill much of the week, in an 11-3 decision. In the 182, Lakewood’s Jeff Harrison pinned Falcon senior Jose Chavez in 1:48. South Whidbey and Lakewood traded forfeits in the 106 and 195-pound divisions, which gave Falcon senior Beck Davis a victory. South Whidbey freshman Cameron Lobdell defeated Lakewood’s Tommy Mosteller 18-11 in the 106-pound bout, setting up South Whidbey’s showdown win by Schille.

South End leaders honor Porter By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record
Praise came from all over Washington and landed in Jim Porter’s hands for 30 years of public service on South Whidbey. Porter attended his last meeting Tuesday, Dec. 17, as a South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District commissioner. Among his spoils are letters from Gov. Jay Inslee, Sen. Maria Cantwell, State Sen. Barbara Bailey and State Reps. Norma Smith and Dave Hayes, a handwritten note from Sen. Patty Murray, an official Parks resolution recognizing Porter’s dedication and an engraved wood plaque. And there are the memories he will carry, memories of founding the district in 1983, watching a forest become Community Park and the Sports Complex, working for 30 years to publicly fund an aquatic/ community center — still unrealized — and of missing family time for monthly Wednesday night meetings. “It’s been a great ride the last 30 years,” said Porter at the meeting this week. He paused to gather himself and wipe away a tear before remembering some of the work he did the past three decades, the people he worked with on the parks staff and fellow commissioners. “I feel the commissioners past and present have shown great stewardship of the public’s money.” After spending nearly half his life — he’s 67 — sitting through parks board meetings, next month will be the first Porter won’t be at. He never lost an election, though to his memory he never had an opponent. During his time on the board, the parks district

Back in 1983, South Whidbey Parks started with a 40-acre donation from the Waterman family and now manages about 420 acres: Community Park, Sports Complex, Trustland Trails, Deer Lake, Lone Lake and Goss Lake. His work was honored by several people at the meeting Tuesday night. Porter is now the proud owner of a one-ofa-kind South Whidbey Little League hooded sweatshirt with “Porter” screen-printed on the back. Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy presented him with a framed certificate in honor of Porter’s public service. Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson, who represents South Whidbey, gave him a letter of appreciation on behalf of the county commissioners. The Rotary Club of South Whidbey Island honored him earlier with the Paul Harris Award, the highest award the organization gives to a non-member.

This plaque was given to Jim Porter at his final South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District commissioners meeting on Dec. 17. In front of the engraved wood is a pile of letters praising Porter for 30 years of service. “You’ll have to get some plaques now, won’t you?” said Don Wood, the parks board president. Parks Commissioner Matt Simms talked about the footprint the parks district has had since its creation. Simms estimated 1 million people have visited the parks over the past few decades, and shared a story of overhearing a baseball team parent from Kirkland tell her family that it was
“The most incredible park I’ve ever seen.” “That’s a huge impact that came from Jim’s work,” Simms said. one of the highest areas for traffic volume on Whidbey Island. Traffic in the area was one reason the owner of Jim’s Hardware chose to move to Ken’s Korner Shopping Plaza, a few minutes up Highway 525. The owner, Becky Bell, said South Whidbey residents didn’t want to come to Clinton and deal with the ferry traffic. “On the heels of the other businesses that have moved in the area, in this case it’s something actually closing, it’s a social gathering place every community needs,” said Jack Lynch, a member of the recently established Clinton Community Council. “It will be missed.” Lynch, a Clinton resident, was no stranger to Anchor Books. “I think I was Bruce’s first customer at 7 o’clock the first morning he opened,” Lynch recalled. “He made me a mocha coffee. Whidbey Island Winery’s merlot reaches top of state blogger list A Whidbey merlot just got a bit juicier. Whidbey Island Winery’s 2011 merlot has been rated the No. 1 wine for a list by blogger Stan The Wine Man in his blog for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The list, called “Top Forty Under Twenty Bucks” is an annual list of wines that are currently available for purchase and cost under $20. “We’re thrilled to have this recognition, we have always tried to make outstanding wines that are affordable,” said Greg Osenbach
of Whidbey Island Winery. “The ‘Sideways’ joke about merlot just makes it more of a challenge.” The top forty wines were chosen from wineries in Washington, Oregon, California, Portugal, Spain, Chile, Italy, France, Germany and New Zealand. In the review, Stan wrote, “Merlot lives! I dare you to drink a glass of this and disagree with me on the quality of this juice. When I tasted this, all I could do was say ‘wow!’ ” This is the 23rd year of production for Whidbey Island Vineyard
& Winery, which sells directly from the winery while also distributing to store and restaurants on Whidbey Island and mainland Washington. Estate-grown grapes provide wines unique to the Puget Sound Appellation and an extensive list of red grapes are sourced from some of eastern Washington’s vineyards. The wine list currently features eleven red wines, five white wines, a rose and a Barbera port. The tasting room is located at 5237 Langley Road.

Selling your home means you will bear a heavy responsibility – setting the asking price. Some owners believe their agent sets the price. Not so. The agent is an invaluable information resource – but does not set the price. You do. Your agent may implement a brilliant marketing program, attracting many prospective buyers to your home. Prospects may get excited and see themselves owning your home, but the ultimate sale will occur only if you have priced the home fairly. Begin by asking your agent for details about all sales in your area over the past twelve months. Eliminate those which sold a the highest and lowest prices. Next, compare the financing, any special incentives offered, and the conditions of those homes already sold. Look at the sale times too, an consider eliminating the longest (overpriced) and the shortest (underpriced). Take a look at the price variance among those which sold. Try averaging their sale prices, taking into account differences in square footage. Ask your agent which sales appear most typical or similar to the home you are offering. What was the asking price to sale price percentage? If most homes sold within 3% of their asking price, be careful not to set a price more than 3% above the market. Price our home high and you may wait. Price it right and you will move!
