School board approves bond, levy measures BY DANIEL NASH BELLEVUE REPORTER

The board of the Bellevue School District voted Nov. 19 to put a bond measure and two levy measures on the ballot for the Feb. 11 special election.

The levy measures are renewals of the district’s Educational Programs and Operations Levy, presently set to expire in 2014, and the Technology and Capital Projects Levy, set to expire in 2015. The Educational Programs and Operations Levy funds 27 percent

of the district budget, according to a news release. A renewal would approve the total levy of $253.8 million in taxes, to be collected in increments annually through 2018. The Technology and Capital Projects Levy finances the Dis-

trict’s Capital Projects Fund for investments in facility improvements, computer technology, technology infrastructure and training in said technologies. A renewal would approve the total levy of $104 million to be collected through 2019.

The holiday season is in full swing, and this year’s Snowflake Lane production in downtown Bellevue promises to be the largest and most extravagant yet. The Bellevue Collection, along with Greg Thompson Productions, has expanded the show and added fresh, new styling. The event will debut at 7 p.m. today (Nov. 29) with the arrival of Santa. The

production continues at 7 p.m. through Dec. 31, except for Christmas day. New this year is Santa’s parade that will take him and visitors to a treelighting ceremony at Bellevue Place Wintergarden. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the Wintergarden where a 30-foot holiday tree will be lit. Visitors can snack on cookies and cocoa, and have pictures taken with Snowflake Lane characters. As in the past, Snowflake Lane will

change to Celebration Lane and give it a New Year’s twist from Dec. 26-31. This portion of the production will include New Year’s music, lights and holiday characters. Now in its ninth season, Snowflake Lane continues to increase in audience size. The Bellevue Collection has been working with the city of Bellevue to manage the large crowd size, according

Metro Transit will begin three months of meetings across King County to inform riders of proposed drastic bus cuts due to the absence of funding. One of the meetings will be in Bellevue from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E. Metro is facing proposed cancellation of 74 bus routes and revisions to 107 other routes unless a stable funding authority is granted by the state Legislature. Without the funding, Metro would have to reduce costs in 2014 and in 2015 as temporary funding expires and reserves are exhausted. The proposed cuts could mean a loss of 14 million rides annually, and would revert Metro’s service to levels not seen since 1997 – even as ridership nears all-time highs. Metro provides about 400,000 rides each day and is nearing the annual record of 119 million riders reached in 2008. Other Metro meetings are scheduled at: · Federal Way: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 6-8 p.m., Federal Way Community Center, 876 South 333rd St. · West Seattle: Tuesday, Dec. 3, 6-8 p.m., Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, 4408 Delridge Way S.W. · North Seattle: Thursday, Dec. 5, 6-8 p.m., North Seattle Community College, 9600 College Way N. · Downtown Seattle: Tuesday, Dec. 10, noon to 2 p.m., Union Station, 401 S. Jackson St. · Kent: Monday, Dec. 16, 6-8 p.m., Kent Commons, 525 Fourth Ave. N. · Kirkland: Thursday, Jan. 16, 6-8 p.m., Peter
