Mayoral race going down to the last count By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

Auburn’s already close mayoral race tightened just a wee bit more as of the latest numbers at 8 p.m. Tuesday. City Councilmember and Deputy Mayor Nancy Backus holds the edge over City Councilmember John Partridge.

Backus, hoping to be Auburn’s first female mayor, has received 6,170 votes so far in the combined total of King and Pierce counties, 50.68 percent, to John Partridge’s combined 6,005 votes or 49.32 percent. In King County, however, Partridge has overtaken Backus, 5,192 votes, 50.62 percent, to Backus’ 5,064 votes, or 49.38 per-

Only 165 votes separated the two as of Tuesday’s last counts. “It’s closer than I would have liked, but I’m cautiously optimistic,” Backus said Tuesday evening. “I understand King County plans to be done with the majority of its counting by Thursday. taurant Impossible”. For Donel Brinkman, who has owned the Monkey for more than 16 years, being featured on the show – which airs sometime near the end of the year – was a mixed blessing, one that she hopes turns out to be a recipe for success. “It’s been a journey and the results were [ more MONKEY page 10 ]
