Pedestrian traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14, according to the World Health Organization. The Sumner School District partnered with East Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Sumner Police Department to encourage safe walking skills in celebration of International Walk to School Day, Oct. 9. Daffodil Valley Elementary hosted its inaugural walking school bus as part of the Safe Kids Walk to School Day Parade. Students met at the district building and took a sunny stroll to Daffodil Valley Elementary. The parade was escorted by an East Pierce fire engine and Sumner police officers. East Pierce safety clowns had fun with the children and discussed pedestrian safety tips like the importance of traffic signals, hazard identification, crosswalk use and not using cellphones and iPods
