State grant could help grow Tacoma's urban forest program The City of Tacoma is poised to receive a funding boost to its urban forestry program thanks to a grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. This is the third grant awarded by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to the City of Tacoma in the past three years for urban forestry efforts. In 2010, Tacoma was awarded a $10,000 grant to assist with Tacoma Municipal Code revisions and stakeholder

meetings related to the city's urban forestry and open space programs, and a $20,000 grant to address the city's inventory and strategic urban forest management plan related to Tacoma's neighborhood business districts. The latest grant will help offset the costs of tree planting projects around the city, such as the Hilltop Diversitree Project, which aims to plant more than 200 trees in Tacoma's Hilltop Business District, as well as the purchase of a wide array of tree types, species, and ages in order to support diversifying the city's urban forest and growing the canopy cover from 19 per cent in 2009 to 30 per cent by 2030. The grant funds must be spent by the end of this year. Tacoma City Council is expected to vote on a resolution to accept the grant during its meeting on Tues., Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., First Floor, City Council Chambers.
