As the story has been passed down through generations, it is said that the city of Bremerton had inadvertently built portions of its wharf, an important commercial and transportation hub, over privately-owned tidelands. The property owner’s threatened lawsuit prompted a signature-gathering campaign by citizens to put the formation of a port district within the city of Bremerton’s boundaries on the ballot in the hopes of resolving the dispute. Many changes within the Port District have transpired these 100 years and the Port is looking forward to recounting and celebrating its history with the public.

POULSBO — The North Kitsap School Board's decision to close Breidablik Elementary School has been upheld by the Kitsap County Superior Court. Superior Court Judge Anna M. Laurie issued her ruling Sept. 13. “Based on the foregoing analysis, the school board made a reasoned decision with room for multiple opinions and therefore the decision was not arbitrary and capricious,” the court ruling states. The school board voted unanimously Feb. 28 to close the school, effective the end of the 2012-13 school year. The decision was based on the recom-

POULSBO — School board candidate Cindy Webster-Martinson picked up an important endorsement this week — from her opponent. Steve Hancock posted on the NK Education Facebook page Sept. 21 that he’s
dropped out of the race for North Kitsap School Board District 1. However, his name will still appear on the ballot; that deadline was May 20, according to county elections office. Hancock, a restaurant manager and former Poulsbo reserve police officer, said he made the decision to drop out of the race after talking
to his campaign manager and friends. “I have no qualms about what I can do. I can jump in and learn as I go along, but what the board needs at this point is someone with a little more experience and a background in education,” Hancock told the Herald

KINGSTON — The two candidates for Kingston Port Commission District 1 agree on aspects of the port’s future — it needs to focus on economic development, for example — but not necessarily on the approach. Bruce MacIntyre and Nels Sultan are on the Nov. 5 ballot.

POULSBO — The Port of Poulsbo is preparing to resubmit its request to annex more territory around Liberty Bay, and this time, it could cast a larger net than before. Port commissioners met Wednesday afternoon to discuss how to proceed with their aims toward enlarging the port district’s boundaries. Commissioners returned to the drawing board after a technicality prevented their measure for annexation from inclusion on the November ballot. Commissioners want to try again in a special election in
