Persistence paid off for Frank Penwell and Consignment Treasures.

After nearly 15 years of wrangling over local land-use regulations, the Roche Harbor Road recycle and resale operation has a new permit and is ready to roll, or, more to the point, ready to build.

On Sept. 4, the county hearings examiner issued a decision approving a new conditional-use permit for the property. Frank Penwell is pleased, but his neighbor Mark Larsen isn’t.

“He just wanted to wipe the slate clean, be forgiven, and then go back and continue to operate the way he has in the past,” said Larsen. “I’m not bitter or angry about it, just disappointed because nothing will change. My only hope is that he runs the recycling business into the ground.”

Another neighbor who opposed Penwell’s operation, Ross McCallum, also attended the hearing. He couldn’t be reached for comment about the latest developments.

Monument in spotlight BLM to host ‘listening sessions’; seeks input, ideas on monument

In the words of Marcia de Chadenedes, acting director of San Juan Islands National Monument, the process of developing a plan for newly created monument promises to be “lengthy,” even ponderous perhaps.

Maybe that’s to be expected when one takes into account that it consists of roughly 1,100 acres of non-contiguous land scattered throughout an archipelago of islands, and that those lands either together or individually are home to an assortment of historic, cultural and recreational sites, as well as a great deal of pristine natural habitat, or take into consideration that the Bureau of Land Management, entrusted now with creating a plan for one of the nation’s newest monuments,

has developed a regimen for management of monument like the one in the San Juans only once before.

The California Coastal National Monument spans 1,100 miles, from Mexico to Oregon, and consists largely of islands, rocks, reefs and beaches. It just happens de Chadenedes worked on development of its management plan for threeplus years.

Challenges notwithstanding, the BLM will take its first steps in creating a plan for the San Juan Islands National Monument by hosting a series of public meetings: Thursday on Orcas, 6-8 p.m., at the senior center: Friday on Lopez, 6-8 p.m., at Woodmen Hall; and Friday on San Juan, 10 a.m to noon, at the Grange Hall.

De Chadenedes describes the meetings as “listening sessions”, wherein islanders, supporters as well as critics, can weigh in and have what they like to see happen with the monument included in the public record. “It’s everybody’s monument,” she says.

An Orcas Power & Light Cooperative lineman critically injured after coming into contact with a high-voltage line on Lopez Island on the morning of Sept. 20, Kevin Zoerb, regained consciousness Sunday evening.

He remains in critical condition in the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but is breathing on his own and taking nourishment, according to OPALCO. On Sept. 20, at about 9:30 a.m., he was nearly electrocuted while working at the south end of Lopez.

‘Super Heroes’ help Park & Rec shine In its first full year of operation, Island Rec's booster club, Families and Neighbors Support, contributed a total of $8,200 to help offset the cost of the park and recreation district programs.

The funds, which include $6,300 for Island Rec's "Free Movies in the Park" series, provided additional funding for the popular "Music on the Lawn" free summer concert series and subsidies for swim lessons for 40 children.

Island Rec recognized FANS contributions by presenting the group with bright yellow, rain repellent capes at the showing of "The Incredibles," the second film in the September series of Movies in the Park.

“They are truly super heroes to Island Rec and this community for funding Movies in the Park” said Island Rec Director Sally Thomsen.

“Although I was unable to make capes for all FAN Club members they too are Super Heroes.”

With the fire danger beginning to wane and the return of sustained rainfall and precipitation, San Juan County’s fire services are preparing to change the fire risk from “Moderate” to “Low”.

With the risk of a damaging wildland fire diminishing, burn permits will be available beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“Residential” permits allow for a fire up to 10 feet in diameter; the fee is $15. Permits will be valid through June, 2014.

State law prohibits the use of burn barrels, and fires kindled with a permit may only burn natural, untreated wood.

Beginning Oct. 1st, burn permits may be obtained in person from the fire districts on Orcas, San Juan, Lopez and Shaw Islands. Permits will also be available on line at the San Juan County Fire Marshal’s Web site: www. sjcfiremarshal.org.

“If a large number appear [indoors] at a specific season, it is usually late summer and coincides with the mating season of the given species,” said Crawford.

Spiders are “cold-blooded” and not attracted to warmth.

“They don’t shiver or get uncomfortable when it’s cold, they just become less active and eventually, dormant,” Crawford said.

According to the staff of the WSU Plant and Insect Diagnostic Laboratory staff spiders, due to their predacious nature, are beneficial; they trap and eat flies and other insects. Spiders should be conserved not eradicated, they added.

Spiders in Washington state that have a venomous bite are black widows and hobos. Black widow spiders are common in eastern Washington, and a few small populations exist on the western side of the state, according to the Washington Department

of Health. Hobo spiders are found anywhere in Washington. Symptoms associated with spider bites can vary from minor to severe. For Crawford, many mystery bites are falsely attributed to spiders.

“Spiders have no reason to bite humans,” Crawford told the Seattle Times. “They are not bloodsuckers.

They are not even aware of our existence.”

Only a few people have ever died from spider venom, he writes on his website.

For some islanders, watching the spiders arrive is a thrilling moment.

Orcas residents Victoria and Bathan Shaner sat down for dinner last week and noticed an arachnid show unfold outside.

“The spider would wait at the top of the web for the ants to land then would maneuver down to put the ant to sleep, spin it in the web, then move to the next one,” Victoria said. “It was incredible to watch what spiders can do and the web itself was beautiful.”

Skipper, 2nd mate of Hyak placed on administrative duty Washington State Ferries removed the captain and the 2nd mate from duty onboard the Hyak and placed the two on administrative assignment in the wake of the vessel's collision with a sailboat two weeks ago in Upright Channel.

The state ferry system convened a board of inquiry to investigate the collision the afternoon of the crash.

WSF spokeswoman Marta Coursey said placement of the two employees on administrative assignment is routine procedure as part of such an investigation.

ew residents seem to be appearing on the island every day. They are found in windowsills, porches, hanging off plants and in nooks and crannies.

“Spiderwebs are everywhere in my yard,” Orcas resident Nicole Cline said.

The species islanders are watching crop up are known as European cross spiders. Individual spiders’ coloring range from light yellow to dark gray, but all have mottled markings across the back with five or more white dots forming a cross.

Rod Crawford, curator of arachnids at the Burke Museum in Seattle, told the Seattle Times in August that the presumed spider boom this year is a phrase he has heard every year for the last 30 years.

“There are always lots this time of the year,” echoed Orcas Islander Rochelle Severson.

Crawford accounts for the increasing visibility of these eight-legged creatures due to spiders coming into maturity and needing more space to make cobwebs. The spiders are hatched in early May and become adults in the late summer.

On his website, Crawford goes on to explain that August and September are the worst time of year for northern hemisphere spider collectors. Only a few spider species including the larger orb weavers and the giant house spiders are mature at that time, but not many other spiders are.

Crawford is clearly prepared for a range of arachnid-oriented questions from the funny to the bizarre. His FAQ page is full of topics from swallowing spiders while sleeping to camel spiders that run 25 miles per hour screaming like a banshee to a gigantic spider that lives in tunnels under Windsor Castle.

These are all myths that Crawford dispels.

The Hyak, a Super Class ferry with a 144-vehicle capacity is capable of traveling up to 17 knots. It collided with a 28-foot sailboat, the Norma Rae, Sept. 13 at about 2 p.m., while en route to Orcas Island. shortly after leaving Lopez.

The sailboat's lone occupant, a man in his mid60s, was transported to San Juan Island's Peace Island Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries shortly after the collision.

The heavily damaged sailboat was towed from the crash scene by a boat provided by state Fish and Wildlife, but it later sank,

reportedly in 250 feet of water.

Penwell says that over $150,000 in local community contributions have been made, including scholarships and contributions of goods and money to numerous local community groups.

He pointed to passage of the growth management act in the 1990’s and “continual changes in land use regulations” as the source of many problems for Consignment Treasures.

He also says mistakes by county staff and the intrusion of politics into the process cost the non-profit “15 to 20 thousand dollars in fees and related costs, and added lots of unnecessary aggravation.”

“We’ve applied for permits for everything we’ve done,” said Penwell. “You have to follow the rules, and I did.”

In addition to permitting recycling drop-offs, the new conditional-use permit allows Consignment Treasures to build a new sorting building and shed-roof additions to accommodate recycling drop-off and storage. A building formerly used for storage can now be used as retail space.

Penwell says that the CT Recycling unit will now be able to expand its recycling and reuse activities and “serve San Juan Islanders in a more efficient manner.”

The hearing examiner included several conditions in his decision. CT must complete a landscaping and lighting plan, a noise mitigation plan, and a written plan to protect the aquifer recharge area. It must also agree to fire protection requirements suggested by the fire marshal, and allow site inspections by county staff. The county staff recommended against issuance of the new CUP. County Councilman Bob Jarman, a supporter of Penwell who organized a community meeting supporting Penwell and Consignment Treasures before his election, was pleased with the CUP decision. “I’m excited about what’s happening

Anacortes, operator of Orcas Medical Center on Orcas Island, participated in the selection process but decided not to participate in further negotiations with PeaceHealth.

The PeaceHealth agreement with UW Medicine specifies, "This Agreement is not a merger, acquisition, corporate restructure or lease and does not constitute a change in governance or change in mission for either organization."

The agreement specifies eight "examples of advanced medical care" that might be provided by UW Medicine to PeaceHealth. Some of those specialty care services include level 1 trauma and burn care, cancer care, organ transplantation, complex cardiac and vascular care and complex neuro® logical surgical care.

He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center and admitted to the burn unit in critical condition.

The family set up a Caring Bridge site (www. caringbridge.org/visit/kevinzoerb) to provide updates and send messages to Kevin and his family. As of Monday, Sept. 23, 61 wellwishers sent messages.

A “Zoerb Family Fund” has been set up at Islanders Bank to help with expenses.

According to Opalco, the last accident of this kind was on Oct. 14, 1980, when Opalco employee Ole Pederson was killed after coming into contact with a high-voltage line on Lopez Island.

Islanders Bank recently hired Sherm Losee as senior vice president/chief credit officer. A former northern Utah regional president of Zions First National Bank, Losee will supervise all lending activities at Islanders Bank.

At Zions Bank, Losee's duties included financial management, sales and overall supervision of 24 branches in a sixcounty region of Northern Utah.

Leadership SJs hosts Open House series

Leadership San Juan Islands invites islanders to participate in its annual five-month professional development program.

In 11 sessions, January to May, participants become more knowledgeable and skilled at getting things done in the county.

Gamble by board puts co-op at risk

Two little known facts about OPALCO’s “Broadband Vision”: 1) OPALCO has approved over $5 million for “backbone” network investments, including $3 million already spent in infrastructure, $1.2 million on broadband studies, and a significant chunk to procure 700 MHz frequency.

2) The Board voted that these “backbone” costs are to be underwritten 100 percent by members through electricity rates, instead of being partially recovered from Century Link, ISPs and broadband users through lease or network fees.

Five million dollars amounts to roughly a 2.9 percent “tax” on the entire OPALCO membership,

assuming these costs are paid over 10 years.

We want fast, reliable internet, too. But we have questions and concerns.

Are we happy about our electricity rates being “padded” to subsidize broadband and cellular users?

Specifically, are each of the “backbone” network investments justifiable as an improvement in the electrical system?

Or do some investments (e.g. procurement of the 700 MHz frequency) make sense only if you count their non-electricity benefits— while making electricity users shoulder the costs?

If some of these investments only are viable with a cross-subsidy, are we okay with that? If so, to what extent are we willing to cross-subsidize?

Can OPALCO show a cost-benefit analysis to ensure our padded electricity costs do not exceed benefits to local economic development? And even then, we need to acknowledge equity issues: winners and losers are not necessarily the same.

Perhaps it’s wise to pause and re-think the board’s decision. Put the 700 MHz frequency procurement process on hold until its economic merit, without cross-subsidization, is evident.

Feisty to a fault, Betsy Roberts lived life with flair, and on her own terms

n a rainy Sunday afternoon, about a month before she died, Betsy Roberts trudged along West Side Road, moving purposefully “to see a friend” she told me, as she accepted an offer of a ride northbound toward Roche Harbor.

She was wary until I told her I was a reporter with the Journal of the San Juan Islands, then she talked almost non-stop for the half-hour ride.

“You might be interested that I was the foreman on the Ruth Neslund trial,” she said, starting a quick-paced monologue that had me wishing I had my voice Steve Wehrly recorder with me.

Interlaced with comments about her 30 years living on San Juan Island, a place she said she dearly loved, she admitted her jury service was an important episode of her life, but she wanted me to know there was more to her than that trial.

She told me she read, and wrote, “a lot.” I asked what she read; she said, “Mostly history, especially medieval history, which I studied in college and love.” She was also a fan of Winston Churchill, she said, and named a restaurant in Friday Harbor “Winston’s”.

Without being asked, she said, “Ruth Neslund did it, but I felt for her.” Roberts was quoted in Ann Rule’s book saying, “It was not a decision we wanted to come up with. But the evidence was too much. It was a difficult case for all of us.”

We had driven along West Side Road, Mitchell Bay Road and West Valley Road to the Roche Harbor Road corner. She abruptly said, “Let me out here; this is close enough.” I said I wanted to talk more about the Neslund trial; she pulled her business card (“Betsy Roberts, Certified Residential Appraiser”) out of her bag and said, “Call me; I’ll talk more.”

When I tried the number a few weeks later, the phone had been disconnected. She had died.

Talking to her friends and her only child, Oren Wool, I learned that there was indeed much more about Betsy Roberts than her participation on the Neslund trial. “It was a wild ride with her, she attracted people to her,” said her son, who is Executive Director of the Sustainable Enterprise Conference in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Betsy was born Elizabeth Ann Roberts in California in 1943, graduated from Glendale High School, and attended UC Berkeley in the ’60s - until she was expelled for participating in the demonstrations and campus occupation of Sproul Hall, led by Mario Savio, Joan Baez and others.

She’s survived by two sisters, one brother and two former husbands.

She considered herself part of the Jack Kerouak/Allen Ginsberg “beat generation” – but she liked the University of Alabama, from which she graduated with a degree in history in 1978. And she liked clothes (“always looked great,” said a friend), traveling (she was a TWA stewardess and ticket agent who used her travel bonus extensively) and Jerry Garcia.

In 1980, she came to Friday Harbor with her then-husband Dale Blackburn. She designed the house on Bailer Hill Road that she lived in for the rest of her life. She was active in the Animal Protection Society, the theatre, the library and the Democratic Party.

Greg Canova, brought in from the Attorney General’s office to prosecute Ruth Neslund for first-degree murder, remembers Roberts and the trial.

“It was the hardest case I ever tried,” said Canova, now a superior court judge in King County. “Presiding juror requires multiple personal and analytical skills, and patience. She did an exceptional job and kept all jurors fully involved, and brought in a verdict in less than a week.”

Charlie Silverman, San Juan County Deputy Criminal Prosecutor, who was co-prosecutor in the Neslund trial, said he knew Betsy more from working with her on the local Democratic steering committee.

“She was progressive, feisty and had good ideas,” Silverman said. “Against the Iraq war and the first person I knew who said something was wrong with the housing market. About 2004 or 2005, she told me and the local Democrats that no-down, variable rate mortgages and the inflated housing market were going to get ordinary people into trouble. She was right, as we have seen.”

“She did a very good job, kept the discussion on the subject and would smooth things over when people started to get unhappy. She was capable and even-handed and intelligent. None of the jurors had any complaints about her.”

“An admirable, amazing woman,” said Bogen, “we loved her a lot. She just knew how to do everything right, though sometimes she could be difficult, even hard to like, especially the last few years. What an entertainer. She gave great parties, cooked wonderful dinners.

“Her Christmas decorations and her gardening were always outstanding—when I first went in the early 80s she actually had real candles on the tree. She was a good friend, active with the library, animal rescue, and helped in the garden at the Mullis Center. She actually gave tea parties—with hats. And she was a fan of Jerry Garcia, whom she said she had met.”

If Betsy Roberts had a theme song, it might have been Edith Piaf ’s “No Regrets”, which was also the title of Anne Rule’s book about the trial. She was the kind of person you wish you had known better, and earlier.

Carl Francis Robinson, 88, passed away on Sept. 19, 2013 at the Village at the Harbour, with his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, and their daughter, Jill, by his side.

Carl (Mickey), son of Laurence L. and Mary Opal (Donaldson) Robinson was born on May 16, 1925 in Yakima, Wash. He was a good student and loved to build model airplanes and gliders.

After graduating from Yakima Contributed photo High School in Carl Robinson: 1925—2013 1943, he joined the U.S. Army/ Army Air Corps. He served in WWII as a 1st Lieutenant instructing pilots in AT-6 (advanced trainer) airplanes. He returned to Yakima after the war, where he attended Yakima Valley College and worked as a crop duster.

In 1950, he married Dorothy Aileen Yates, after five years of dating, following a blind date. During their dating years he disassembled a car and rebuilt it from pieces.

Carl was a serious, contemplative and meticulous person, taking time to make proper decisions. He was also adventurous, becoming a pioneer parachute jumper.

Their only child Jill, was born in 1955.

The family moved to Seattle in 1959, where he graduated from the University of Washington with a Master’s Degree

in Geology. Carl worked for Burlington Northern, testing land for minerals and writing reports and contracts on promising land purchases for the railroad until his retirement at age 58.

His weekends were usually spent at Snohomish Airport, where he was a lifetime member of the Seattle Skydivers Club and made 330 jumps. In 1985, Carl and Dorothy moved to Friday Harbor, Wash.

Carl enjoyed making and sharpening knives, fishing, camping, practicing archery, target shooting, reading, and talking about airplanes and flying. He was an active member of the American Legion, Post No. 163, participating in many events, including the honor guard in parades and funerals.

He was a member of the NRA with a strong belief in the right to bear arms. He was a member of the Republican Party, but more importantly supported politicians who believed and supported the Constitution and Bill of Rights, less federal government control and more people’s rights.

Carl is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Jill and son-in-law, Ned Bailey; granddaughter, Sara Bailey; grandson, Daniel Bailey, of Tempe, Ariz.; brother, L.A. (Hap) Robinson; and nephews Todd and Pat Robinson of Anacortes, Wash.

Ron Meng: 1954—2013

N.W. marine industry veteran passes

Ron Meng, founder and owner of Islands Marine Center, Lopez Island, Wash., passed away peacefully Aug. 22, 2013 after a three-year battle with cancer. Truly a self-made man, Ron started IMC some 40 years ago, literally from the trunk of his car, servicing what was then a sizable fishing fleet on Lopez.

Gradually, he and his wife Jennifer purchased waterfront property, developed a full-service marina and shifted their emphasis to recreational boaters as the commercial fishing industry waned.

Ron was a skilled mechanic and an avid fisherman, two traits that he blended successfully to design and bring to market his own brand of northwest-style boat: the Ocean Sport Roamer. Coming up on hull No. 100, this unique brand was a source of great pride for Ron, as he actively engaged his favorite pastime – fishing trips to Barkley Sound.

Ron was born Feb. 6, 1954, in Seattle, Wash., to Godan and Florence Meng. He spent his youth in the Normandy Park neighborhood of Seattle, moving to Lopez Island in 1972. The next year, Ron married Jennifer Collman, also of Lopez. The couple started their business, Islands Marine Center, the same year.

Theodore Vern Coffelt: March 20, 1930 —Sept. 5, 2013 Vern Coffelt was born in Westsound on Orcas Island to Amos and Helen Smedberg Coffelt.

He grew up on the Smedberg farm on Turtleback Mountain, the third of four brothers. The family worked the farm for a frugal and healthy livelihood, learning old world farming know-how from his grandfather John Gus “JG”

Smedberg. Vern’s father Amos worked on the early freight boats and ferries, and died in 1942.

The family was very young. The Coffelt boys were known for being an active, lively bunch who worked long and hard to make ends meet. Vern and his brothers Jack, Amos (Ed) and Russell all attended grade school and high school on Orcas Island.

In 1950, the family moved from the Smedberg place on Turtleback to the fertile Crow Valley farm. Vern stayed with his mother to work the place now known as the Coffelt Farm.

Helen Coffelt passed in 1955. Vern was left with an active farm and fulltime operation with sheep, cattle, dairy, poultry and a hay crop to manage. Vern cherished the farm education he had with his grandfather Smedberg on the Turtleback farm.

Family farms were struggling to survive in those years and Vern found it prudent to find other work for several years to support the farm. In 1977, Vern and Sidney Reynolds were married and formed a life partnership and team that has carried the farm to the successful operation it is today.

He seldom left the farm and put each day to his calling of working the farm. He loved his work and was committed to producing the best quality food he could for Orcas Island.

Aug. 20, 2013 was Vern’s last day on his beloved farm. He did the chores and daily work and then suffered a crippling stroke during the night. He was airlifted to the hospital in Bellingham and then to Whatcom Hospice House in Fairhaven where he rested, was tended to by Sidney and visited by family and friends.

The Wolverines scored early, often and with ease in a 69-0 runaway win over Orcas Saturday, Sept. 21, in the 23rd annual meeting between the two inter-island gridiron rivals.

On Friday Harbor’ first play from scrimmage, senior tailback Nate Steenkolk bulled through the Vikings defensive line and rambled 55 yards for a touchdown, and the rout was on. The Wolverines had a 27-0 advantage and the game well in hand by the start of the second quarter of play, tallying four touchdowns in their first nine plays.

With the victory, the Wolverines posted their secondstraight Island Cup shutout, following last season’s 41-0 win a year ago in Friday Harbor.

But the degree of difficulty is expected to climb considerably when the Wolverines face local rival La Conner at home this Friday. The Braves (3-0), the state’s 2B Division runner up a year ago, have nearly their entire starting lineup back from a year ago, Friday Harbor Head Coach Richard Ledford said.

“We’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right things in focus and not just be resting on what we did this last Saturday,” Ledford said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to be prepared for them.”

Against Orcas, however, the Wolverines encountered little resistance from an outmatched and inexperienced Vikings squad, which lost starting quarterback Demitri Pence to a wrist injury shortly before the half.

On the Wolverines second possession, running back Willie Blackmon scored on a 37-yard TD run and safety Amer Melic tallied the team's third touchdown of the opening quarter after picking off a pass and returning it 94 yards into the end zone. Blackmon had two touchdowns and 134 yards on only four carries. Melic scored twice as well, following up the “pick-six” with an 82-yard kickoff return to start the second half.

Friday Harbor led 41-0 at the half, and 62-0 midway through the third quarter, and let the second string take over from that point on in what proved to be the highest scoring total by either team since the Wolverines and Vikings first began head-to-head competition on the gridiron in 1973.

Next Friday Harbor (2-1) will face Division 2B rival La Conner, at home, Friday, Sept. 27; kick off is 7 p.m. The Wolverines host Division 1A regional rival Meridian the following week, Friday, Oct. 4, kick off is 7 p.m.

A dozen Spanish-speaking San Juan Island children learned more about the national park in their backyard and about national parks nationwide thanks to a $15,000 grant from the National Park Foundation and a partnership with San Juan Island Library.

San Juan Island National Historical Park received a 2013 "America’s Best Idea" grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks.

Inspired by the Ken Burns’ documentary “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” the America’s Best Idea program funds park activities designed to connect diverse populations throughout the United States with their national parks.

The park is using a portion of the funds for a pilot program in partnership with the library to reach out to

‘Granny’s Clan’ nets trio of book awards Now, what could be better than having your book win a prestigious, national literary award?

Well, how about three?

That's the number of awards recently bestowed upon “Granny’s Clan: A Tale of Wild Orcas,” a nonfiction children’s picture book about the Southern resident orcas that live in the Salish Sea. Written by Dr. Sally Hodson, former executive director of the The Whale Museum, and illustrated by Orcas Island artist Ann Jones, Granny’s clan was selected the 2013 Book of the Year, children’s category, by the Izaak Walton League, 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Award, as a finalist in the category of children’s non-fiction, and earned first place in the Purple Dragonfly Children’s Book Award Children’s Picture Book category.

Published in September, 2013, by Dawn Publications, Granny’s Clan takes young readers on a real-life adventure with two young orcas and Granny, the clan’s 100-year-old matriarch as they welcome a new baby, “see” with sound, hunt for salmon, play, face dangers and encounter humans.

f you liked the county fair, you will love the fourth annual Great Island Grown Festival.

It’s a three island, 13 day extravaganza with a cornucopia of food, farms and friendliness - just the elements that have made the San Juan County Fair the “can’t miss” event in the islands for more than a century.

Spearheaded by the San Juan County Agricultural Resources Committee and the revitalized Island Grown in the San Juans program, the festival “celebrates the bounty of abundant farms and locally-grown food in our beautiful archipelago within the Salish Sea,” according to Island Grown’s extensive new website, islandgrown.net.

Food and more food will be the hallmark of the two-week-long event. Each island will provide multiple opportunities to fill your cupboard and yourself with local produce, seafood and fish. Orchid’s “Going Whole Hog” will be an all-day event starting at 10 a.m., featuring instruction on butchering, roasting and preserving pork. There will also be an allday Farm Olympics, with contests such as hay bale lifting and milk pail carrying. Proceeds benefit the Orcas School Farm to Cafeteria Program.

Surbaugh’s gourmet Island Harvest Pop-up Dinner at 6 p.m. will feature local ingredients from Maple Rock Farm, Coffelt Farm, Jones Family Farm and Buck Bay Shellfish. Locally produced beer, wine and spirits are included.

Lopez feasts include a Lopez Locavores Evening Meal at the School Oct. 3; Lopez on the Halfshell Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at Sweetwater Farm (with a tour); and a Farms to Feast dinner Oct. 13 at Jones Family Farm, prepared by chef Derrek Bugge from Frank’s Oyster House &

Champagne Bar in Seattle (also with a tour). Vita’s Wildly Delicious and watercolorist Tom Hoffman team up Oct. 11 and 12 for a two-day watercolor course followed by a wine-tasting dinner at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12.

San Juan Island will host its share of gastronomic delights, too. There’s a Chili Cook-off Oct. 6 at the Brickworks; a Bike & Gastronomic Tour the same day, with a lunch at Red Mill Farm; and a Tour the Fields, Taste the Feast event Friday, Oct. 11, with dinner following at Coho Restaurant in Friday Harbor.

The Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 Farmers Markets on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan islands will be overflowing with freshly harvested veggies and fruits, some of it ready to eat and some of it ready to cook. San Juan County’s farmers have learned to grow almost everything from spring to fall, so you can choose from a big variety, from greens to sausages to apples at peak flavor.

On Orcas, also Oct. 5 and 12, a Food Masters Workshop can inform you how the best farmers and processors grow, harvest and preserve.

Three workshops, 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day, will tell you about sustainable horticultural practices, at the Community Garden, and value-added production, at the Village Green.

And what’s a festival without a parade? Sponsored by the Grange No. 966, the Friday Harbor Fall Farm Parade Oct. 5 is a hoot-andholler event, from children with chickens and pets, to farm families with tractors and harvesters parading through Friday Harbor’s main streets to celebrate the resurgence of smalls farms and local food in the San Juans. It starts at the county fairgrounds at 2:30 p.m. and ends at Brickworks.

Love,betrayal,jealousy,onscreen National Theatre Live’s production of ‘Othello’ featured in SJCT’s HD-live series William Shakespeare’s classic tale of love, jealousy and betrayal will come to life on the silver screen, and in highdefinition, in the next installment of San Juan Community Theatre’s newly launched “HD-live” program, Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.

In National Theatre Live’s presentation of Shakespeare’s “Othello”, streamed via satellite to the Community Theatre HD screen, Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester (Henry V at the National Theatre, BBC’s Hustle) takes on the title role in the famous play about the destructive power of jealousy.

Othello, newly married to Desdemona—who is half his age—is appointed leader of a major military operation. Iago, passed over for promotion by Othello in favor of the young

Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. And disastrous results ensue.

Playing opposite Lester as the duplicitous Iago is fellow Olivier Award winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans, James Bond: Skyfall), who is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of Athens, One Man, Two Guvnors) on the heels of their acclaimed collaboration on the National Theatre’s recent production of Hamlet.

It’s not everyday that you get to ooh-and-ah at the spectacle of men in lederhosen, or women donned in dirndl skirts, is it? In fact, the opportunity comes around just once a year (at least, as far as we know).

San Juan Island will be outfitted up to its Bavarian best in celebration of the 19th almost-annual Oktoberfest, Saturday, Oct. 5, at the fairgrounds in Friday Harbor.

The almost-annual event will feature just about everything one might expect at any traditional Oktoberfest extravaganza, like Bavarian style food and drinks… and beer, naturally… funny hats, a Blakapelle oompah orchestra

led by event found Tom Starr—complete with accordions and tubas— plenty of polkas, with professional instructors to lend a hand, a series of sing-alongs, crafts for the kids, and a costume contest as well.

Perhaps there may even be a Chicken Dance or two.

Sponsored by San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce, Oktoberfest is a charitable event, with proceeds benefitting the various charities supported by the local Lions, Rotary and Soroptimists clubs.

A rain garden can prove an effective way to filter and collect storm water from roof tops, driveways, patios and other areas of impervious surface. NOTICE OF INTENT TO OBTAIN CUSTODY SAN JUAN COUNTY, acting as an authorized public entity with the authority granted in RCW 79.100, intends to take custody of the vessel ‘Attitude’, USCG #594582, on October 9th, 2013 (Custody Date).

The vessel, a 77’ wooden motor yacht has been declared derelict/abandoned as it meets the definition of a derelict/abandoned vessel as described in RCW 79.100(1).

Once custody is obtained, San Juan County is authorized to use or dispose of it in any appropriate and environmentally sound manner without further notice to the owner.

This vessel is moored illegally in Roche Harbor, San Juan Island. The Deer Harbor Bridge provides the only access to several hundred homes which must be maintained throughout construction. San Juan County has received a federal BRAC grant to replace the existing 52-foot three-

span timber bridge with a larger concrete bridge to be constructed in 2015. Design is expected to begin in November 2013 with a bid offering expected in late 2014.
