Sound Transit considers fares for downtown Tacoma Link light rail
Posted online Thurs., Sept. 12 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Sound Transit is accepting public comments on a plan to implement fares for riding downtown Tacoma's Link light rail. Tacoma Link light rail is Sound Transit's only fare-free service and has provided free rides since it began service a decade ago. According to Sound Transit officials, free fares are typically allowed in instances when it would cost more to collect fares than the amount those fares would generate. Ten years later, however, that policy no longer applies because Tacoma Link light rail serves about a million rides annually. Collecting fares would generate revenue sufficient to cover collection costs and help offset operating costs, according to Sound Transit officials. If approved by Sound Transit Board of Directors, an adult fare could range from one dollar to two dollars, with lower rates for children, seniors and people with disabilities. This summer, Sound Transit began to meet with citizens, community groups, social service organizations and other stakeholders to inform the community about this potential change, discuss potential impacts that collecting fares could have on low-income and minority populations, and to develop appropriate actions to mitigate those impacts. Later this month, Sound Transit Board of Directors is expected to consider whether to charge fares and, if so, how much they will be. If fares are adopted, Sound Transit will not begin to collect them until mid-2014 or later.
Artist selected to create welcome gateway to downtown Tacoma
Posted online Thurs., Sept. 12 Photo Courtesy Engineered Artworks The City of Tacoma will host two community meetings this month to introduce the artist who has been commissioned to create artwork for the downtown Tacoma gateway intersection of South 26th Street and Pacific Avenue. Those attending the meetings will have an opportunity to meet artist Sean Orlando (pictured), view samples of his work, provide input, and learn more about the project. "I am very excited for this opportunity to share my work with Tacoma," said Orlando, an Oakland, Calif. native whose work will be among the public art pieces for the Sound Transit D-to-M Streets track and signal project that extends the Seattle-Tacoma Sounder commuter rail line from the Dome District to
South Tacoma and Lakewood. "I'm particularly interested in hearing about the needs of the community and learning more about this area." An open house will be held on Weds., Sept. 25 between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Anthem Coffee, located at 1911 Pacific Ave., in downtown Tacoma. A "meet-the-artist" reception will be held on Weds., Sept. 25 between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at 301 Puyallup Ave., in Tacoma. A design concept for the gateway project is under way and will be released later this year. A schedule for construction of the artwork will be established once design is complete. The City of Tacoma's Arts Program staff is managing this project for Sound Transit's Public Art Program.
Sound Transit will hold an open house on the issue on Thurs., Sept. 19 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Pantages Theater, located at 901 Broadway, in downtown Tacoma. Sound Transit will also hold a public hearing on the issue on Thurs., Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. in acoma City Council Chambers, Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, in
