Homeowners invited to free workshops on managing stormwater systems Pierce County homeowners and homeowner associations are invited to attend a free workshop this fall to learn how to prepare their stormwater systems for the rainy season. Homeowners will also learn how to manage their neighborhood associations or start one. "These free workshops will help homeowners learn how to protect the stormwater systems they own," said Dan Wrye, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities water quality manager. "These actions will help reduce flooding and protect water quality."

McCarthy tours Pierce County's $353M construction project Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy (pictured above right) joined staff Wednesday on a tour of the $353 million expansion project under way at Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. When the project is completed in three years it will increase sewer capacity, introduce new technologies that help protect the environment, build the foundation for meeting future environmental regulations, allow the county to repair and replace aging infrastructure at the plant, and increase the plant's footprint from 49 acres to 89 acres and treatment capacity from 28.7 million gallons per day to 43 million gallons per day. Infrastructure improvements consist of a new laboratory, rehabilitation of existing buildings, and expansion of many of the treatment facilities such as digesters, aeration basins and secondary clarifiers. McCarthy and Pierce County staff visited the site where contractors were at work digging new wastewater treatment basins (above right). These workshops are taught by Pierce County water quality specialists. Homeowners should register by Sept. 13 by calling (253) 798-2460, emailing PCSWMWorkshop@co.pierce.wa.us, or visiting co.pierce.wa.us/hoaworkshops.
