Indianola port down to 1 member Joan Wald resigns; no business can be done until after Nov. 5 election By RICHARD WALKER and KIPP ROBERTSON Herald staff
INDIANOLA — Indianola’s port district now has one commissioner.
Joan Wald resigned Wednesday, as District 3 commissioner, citing Commissioner Jeff Henderson’s changed position on the temporary closure of the Indianola dock and accusing opponents of the dock’s closure of “direct[ing] their venom at me personally ...” The port commission voted June 27 to close the dock to the public in response to an engineer’s con-
cerns about the ability of the dock to accommodate large crowds, spurring protests from some residents. The closure, initially proposed for a month, continues until an engineering firm determines the best way to improve the 100--year-old dock so it is more stable. Judith Frank resigned July 29 as District 2 commissioner. Frank and Wald’s positions are on the Nov. 5
general election ballot; they had chosen not to run. The candidates are Eric Cookson, Matthew Smith (write-in), District 2; and Patrick Hatchel and John Lane, District 3. Kitsap County Elections Supervisor Delores Gilmore said Wednesday that the County Commission has up to 180 days to make an appointment; the election is in 75 days. See RESIGNS, Page A3

POULSBO — Now may not be the best time for North Kitsap School District administrators to put district property on the market. According to appraisals done by Gary Lyman, a real estate appraiser for Richards & Associates, neither the district’s administration offices on Caldart Avenue or land near Island Lake would sell quickly. But if the district did sell either property, there could be a financial gain. The district had the properties appraised to look at potential revenue. The North Kitsap School Board was expected to discuss the appraisals Thursday night during the regular board meeting.
