Tacoma Rail hosts open house, free train rides

Posted online Weds., Aug. 7 Photo Courtesy Tacoma Rail Tacoma Rail will host an open house this month in an effort to educate the public about the organization's freight-switching service that supports the Port of Tacoma. Visitors will enjoy a free train ride; walk through a locomotive and caboose; tour rarely seen rail maintenance equipment, rail yards and other rail operations; and check out model trains during the event. The Tacoma Rail open house will also include games, clowns, food, and giveaways. As part of the event, Tacoma Rail will collect donations for FISH Food Banks of Pierce County. Visitors who want to donate should bring non-perishable foods in boxes, cans or plastic containers. Some of the highest-need items include baby food, peanut butter and tuna. "It's a great opportunity to see the railroad and the port from a view you can't get any other day," said Tacoma Rail Superintendent Dale King. "Our eco-friendly locomotives will pull the passenger train through the Port of Tacoma." The Tacoma Rail open house will be held on Sat., Aug. 24 at 2601 N. Frontage Road (off State Route 509 between Port of Tacoma Road and Milwaukee Way) in Tacoma between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Parking is limited. Free shuttle buses will run every 45 minutes between Tacoma's Maritime Fest at Thea's Park to Tacoma Rail between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (The last bus will leave Tacoma Rail shortly after the last train returns at approximately 3 p.m.). Pierce County to replace North Warren Street Bridge Posted online Thurs., Aug. 8 Images Courtesy Pierce County The North Warren Street Bridge that crosses Muck Creek in Roy will be closed for four months starting Mon., Aug. 12 so the bridge can be replaced. North Warren Street will be closed between Water Street West and Cedar Street West during the work. Motorists will be detoured along State Route 507 and East Gate Road. The new bridge will be 36 feet wide, including the shoulders, and approximately 70 feet long; 14 feet wider and 18 feet longer than the existing bridge. The approaches to the bridge will be reconstructed and repaved, and the bridge will have paved shoulders. "The new two-lane bridge will be constructed with prestressed, precast concrete girders, which will reduce the amount of time necessary for con-

struction and therefore reduce the length of the road closure," said Pierce County Public Works and Utilities bridge engineering supervisor Kraig Shaner. "The additional width will provide more clearance for vehicles crossing the bridge, while the increased length will provide a larger opening for high creek flows." The existing steel bridge, made from an old railroad flatcar, was built in 1977 and carries approximately 3,632 vehicles a day. The project is being managed by Pierce County for the City of Roy. Quigg Brothers Inc. is the general contractor. The construction costs are approximately $1.2 million. The project is funded by the Federal Bridge Replacement Program.
