Auburn voters will decide who gets to stay in the hunt for Position 4 on the City Council by casting their ballots in Tuesday’s primary election. The top two vote-getters among Frank Lonergan, Thomas Sauers and
Yolanda Trout will advance to the Nov. 5 general election where they will vie for the right to represent the residents of Auburn. Position 4 is an open seat, now held by Nancy Backus, who is running for mayor. Backus, the deputy mayor, Councilmember John Partridge and
Iraq war veteran Scot Pondelick are vying for mayor. Pete Lewis has decided not to pursue a fourth term in office. On page 8 of this issue, the Auburn Reporter presents profiles of the City Council candidates based on information received in questionnaires emailed to each candidate.

The City of Auburn will receive $3 million from the state’s new capital budget for a 20,100-square-foot community and events center to be constructed in Les Gove Park. Sen. Joe Fain (R-Auburn) requested and advocated for the capital budget appropriation on behalf of the City. “The new Auburn Community & Events Center will truly have something for everyone,” Fain said. “Auburn is a growing and diverse city that deserves quality facilities. This centrally located gathering place will provide new opportunities for kids to learn and play while expanding services to seniors. Increasing access to a variety of classes, events and cultural programs will help grow the sense of community that
