Pierce County to begin Larchmont Wetland Reserve project Posted online Tues., July 9 Photos Courtesy Pierce County Midland residents will see work start in mid-July on the nearly 17-acre Larchmont Wetland Reserve to reduce flooding in the surrounding neighborhood and provide habitat for wildlife and improve the quality of stormwater runoff. The Pierce County Public Works and Utilities project is located east of McKinley Avenue East and between 91st and 96th streets. Work on the site includes modification of drainage ditches on the property that impact existing wetlands. Crews will also excavate a seasonal pond to provide habitat for animals that depend on wetlands. "The Larchmont Wetland Reserve project is intended to help families and community members all along Clover Creek feel more secure during storms when a lot of rain is coming down," said Pierce County Public Works and Utilities Surface Water Management division manager Harold Smelt. "Not only will this project store excess water during storms, it will also provide habitat and an alternative means of compensating for wetland impacts from certain development projects." This wetland project is proposed as a "bank" to help public projects and private developers mitigate for impacts to wetlands on construction projects in the same basin. Qualifying public and private projects located in the same basin would pay a fee toward developing and maintaining these wetland areas, like Larchmont, and relieve the project developers from any further mitigation burden. The In Lieu
Fee Program is in development pending approval by Pierce County Council and state agencies. A branch of the north fork of Clover Creek flows across the property and is an important part of the plan. Most of the $704,000 project is slated for completion in September, though native plantings will be installed later in the fall. A grant from the Wash-
Walk Tacoma series continues July 17 with candy tour Posted online Weds., July 10 Downtown On The Go will continue its Walk Tacoma series next week with a free walking tour that will highlight Tacoma's rich history in candy making along a 1.1-mile walking route. The tour, which will be held on Weds., July 17 between noon and 1 p.m., will start at Tollefson Plaza, located at South 17th Street and Pacific Avenue, and head to the Dome District, with a ride back on Tacoma's Link light rail. Participants will learn about Tacoma's sweet side from historian and author Ron Magden. Along the route, participants will also be able to sample some of Tacoma's finest candies and baked goods. The walk event is free and there is no need to pre-register. Walk Tacoma is an eight-event walking series held on the first and third Wednesdays
from April through August. The fun, themed walks, now in their fourth year, encourage downtown employees and residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to encourage downtown employees to walk during their workday, whether it is to and from work, at a lunch break, or to a nearby meeting. Walking maps of the routes are available at no cost at Downtown On the Go, located at 950 Pacific Ave. (Suite 300), at many downtown businesses, or by contacting Downtown On the Go Coordinator Meagan Kula at (253) 682-1734 or dotg@tacomachamber.org.
