Pierce Transit kicks off Gig Harbor trolley service Posted online Tues., July 9 Photo Courtesy Pierce Transit Gig Harbor residents and visitors Tuesday boarded the first of many Pierce Transit trolley trips this summer that will connect the historic downtown waterfront to the Uptown shopping district. The service offers trips every 30 minutes between 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with extended service to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The service will end on Sept. 28. Local and regional leaders held a ribboncutting ceremony at 10 a.m. at Skansie Park to herald the new transportation service. "Trolley service has been a goal of the Gig Harbor community for a number of years," said Pierce Transit CEO Lynne Griffith. "With such strong support from community stakeholders, the time is right to pilot this project." "The trolley will help reduce congestion in downtown, connect the downtown and uptown districts and renew interest in public transportation," added Gig Harbor Councilmember and Pierce Transit Board Member Derek Young. The pilot project, which is a partnership between Pierce Transit, Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Merchants of Uptown, and the City of Gig Harbor, will not reduce existing service on Pierce Transit’s Routes 100 and 102, which currently serve the City of Gig Harbor. Posted online Tues., July 9 Roof repairs top Commission agenda Port of Tacoma commissioners are expected to vote this week on whether to spend nearly $4 million to replace the roofs covering two Port-owned buildings on the Tacoma tide flats. The buildings, located at 401 Alexander Avenue and 2000 Taylor Way, were identified as part of a priority list of asset reinvestment projects that were a result of developing the organization's strategic plan. The project calls for removing and replacing the existing roofs, repairing structural deterioration, and providing safety improvements for maintenance access on both buildings. In addition, the building located at 2000 Taylor Way will undergo drainage improvements to eliminate future water damage. The total project is expected to cost approximately $3.9 million, which includes $395,300 in design costs (funding for this phase was approved in April) and approximately $3.5 million in construction costs. If the request is approved by commissioners, Port of Tacoma staff would advertise for bids next week, award a contract next month, and complete the project in December. A third building, located at 3319 Lincoln Avenue, was also identified as a candidate for reinvestment. According to Port of Tacoma staff, repairing the roof isn't justified at this time due to the "functional obsolescence of the building and the lack of a commercial driver." The Port of Tacoma Commission is expected to vote on the issue during its meeting on Weds., July 10 at noon at The Fabulich Center (Room 104), located at 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. More information is available online at portoftacoma.com. Posted online Tues., July 9 Free Port of Tacoma boat tours The Port of Tacoma will offer free guided boat tours next month to give visitors a ship-side view of one of North America's largest container ports during the 21st Annual Tacoma Maritime Fest, which will be held at Thea’s Park and Foss Waterway Seaport between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 24 and Sun., Aug. 25. The Port of Tacoma boat tours will be offered on Sun., Aug. 25, with departures from 535 Dock Street occurring at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. Tickets are required and will be available at the Port of Tacoma booth beginning at 9 a.m. the day of the tours.
