POULSBO — Charlotte Edwards was enrolled for two years in the North Kitsap School District’s Parent Assisted Learning program, which assists homeschooled students. The homeschool program was a better fit for Charlotte, who is an accelerated student, her mother Michelle said. With changes coming to the PAL program, however, Charlotte could be one of many students who will not
enroll with the program for the 2013-14 school year. During the PAL picnic June 10 at Raab Park, estimates of the number of K-8 students not returning to the program were between 30-40. An average of 62 students were enrolled in the K-8 PAL program this year, according to district Director of Elementary Education Patricia Moore. An average of 32 students were enrolled in the 9-12 section of the program. See PAL, Page A3

OULSBO — When Kelsee Bryant began reading for the Books for Bikes Challenge, she already knew what she would do with a bike if she won. And it wasn’t go for a ride. Kelsee, a fourth-grader, already has a bicycle. So she decided she would put the bike up for sale, and donate the proceeds to the Caring
for Carmen Foundation. The Pearson student wanted to help out Carmen Garringer’s parents as much as she can. Carmen, a Suquamish Elementary School student, is undergoing treatment for cancer. “I don’t need another bike,” Kelsee said June 7 during the 20th family barbecue at Pearson. “I read a lot.” It turns out all that reading Kelsee did paid off. She was one of four students at
Pearson to receive a bicycle from the Masons’ Warren G. Harding Lodge No. 260. The lodge gathered the bicycles for the second year for the challenge. Along with Kelsee, firstgrader Kye Brandon, secondgrader Emilio Douglas, and fourth-grader Farhan Suhaime won bicycles. Students participating in the challenge filled out reading See BIKE, Page A4

KINGSTON – There’s an adventurous side to David Williamson. The 2-year-old, who calls himelf “Ijah” – short for his middle name, Elijah -- likes Dora the Explorer, likes to go to the zoo, likes animals and fish, and
likes to draw his ABCs. In Minnesota for tests to see if doctors can transplant insulin-producing islet cells from his pancreas to his liver, he did what any kid does once he has the chance: He hit the hotel pool. Ijah is as courageous as he his adventurous.
