Several hundred people from around Kitsap County gathered at Evergreen Park in Bremerton Saturday to protest against the company, Monsanto. From there they marched down Warren Avenue, finishing at the Norm Dicks Government Center. The event was planned as part of a global initiative called Millions Against Monsanto, in which hundreds of thousands of protestors gathered in more than 400 cities around the

world. The international event has come after years of public protest against Monsanto’s use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in crops, which critics say have been shown to cause cancer and health defects. “We need to get rid of Monsanto all together,” Taylor Niemy said as he addressed the crowd via megaphone. “We need to abolish them.” Niemy organized and led the Bremerton group in its version of the global initiative.

This past Saturday’s “The Unforgotten, Run to Tahoma” made it plain that veterans know how to take care of other veterans in this life and the next. “They came from different parts of this vast nation to eventually call Kitsap County home,” noted Kitsap County Veterans Advisory Board Chairman

Mark Lowe in his eulogy. “This is the place they called home finally. We don’t know their stories. But we do know that they served their country, that they are brothers and sisters in arms.” The celebration of life ceremony for “The Unforgotten, Run to Tahoma” honored 21 unclaimed, deceased veterSee TAHOMA, A9

Bystanders save man at Bremerton YMCA By Michelle Beahm mbeahm@soundpublishing.com

It started as a typical Thursday evening spinning class at the Bremerton YMCA, but it didn’t end that way. On May 16, a man collapsed from a heart attack after a spinning class at the YMCA off of Wheaton Way. Brian Sharpe, 61, had what the doctors later diagnosed as a myocardial infarction that

Thursday evening during the cool-down stretches of his class, he said. “I was exercising; it was near the end of the class,” Sharpe said. “I guess I collapsed.” Sharpe was diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromach cancer recently, but says he hasn’t had an attack like this before, and he doesn’t know what caused it. He says he doesn’t really remember See YMCA, A9
