Candidates file for city council elections
Donut hole bill signed by Gov. Inslee

Candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond City Council races. Mark Lanza, who has served on the Covington City Council for several years, is running unopposed in his race for re-election to Position 2. Lanza is seeking his fourth term on the City Council. Joseph Cimaomo, Jr., filed to challenge David Lucavish for Position 4. Cimaomo ran unsuccessfully in 2011 against Marlla Mhoon. Lucavish was originally appointed to the council in 2008. Jim Scott filed for re-election to Position 6. He is being challenged by Zbigniew George Tomalik. Scott, who is seeking his third term on the council, was first elected in 2005. Filing began May 13 and
Gov. Inslee signed Senate Bill 5417 Tuesday afternoon which will allow Maple Valley to annex the donut hole property. The bill, which faced a last minute challenge by King County, will enable cities to annex larger chunks of property than state law previously allowed. In a letter dated May 15 King County Executive Dow Constantine and other members of the Metropolitan King County Council urged Gov. Inslee to veto the bill. “Now comes the really hard work,” said Maple Valley Mayor Bill Allison in a phone interview May 22. “It’s going to take another year, year and a half to annex the property, but this allows us the opportunity to do that.” Maple Valley officials advo-

Johnathan Hillstrand has written and illustrated three children’s books this year, a departure for the co-captain of the F/V Time Bandit, one of the boats featured on Discovery’s hit show “Deadliest Catch.” Hillstrand, who lives near Covington, found himself with some extra free time last June when he was laid up after a bull riding attempt ended badly and
Hillstrand ended up with multiple broken ribs. “I got hurt real bad at a dude ranch,” Hillstrand said. “Stayed one day too long and decided to get on a bull.” He started drawing pictures for his two grandchildren while he recovered and found himself making up stories to go with them. “I wrote these books for them,” he said. Then Hillstrand made the decision to reach a wider audience

and turn his love of drawing and his stories into books. “I made up a story about a little bird that wanted to be a pirate,” Hillstrand said. One of Hillstrand’s goals was to weave lessons into the stories to encourage and inspire readers young and old. In his first book, “The Adventures of Little Bird: Pirate Dreams,” Hillstrand encourages readers to chase their dreams and not give up even in the face of challenges. “(It’s) a good lesson for big people and little people,” he said.
