Bellevue motorcycle police officer makes back-to-back burglary busts A sharp-eyed motorcycle officer on Thursday, April 25, arrested two burglary suspects minutes after the alleged crime – and a day after arresting two other burglary suspects in a different Bellevue neighborhood. Officer Seth Tyler, a seven-year veteran of the Bellevue Police Department, was heading north on Interstate 405 in response to a burglary reported by a homeowner in the Skagit Key neighborhood in southwest Bellevue. After getting a description of the suspected getaway vehicle over his radio, Tyler spotted the silver Mercedes Benz: going the opposite direction, southbound. Tyler did a quick turnaround at the Lake Washington Boulevard exit and gave chase, catching up with the Mercedes after it exited at the 44th Street exit in Renton. He called in the Renton Police Department to assist before pulling over the two suspects, a man and a woman. Meanwhile, a motorist had reported a
package thrown out of the Mercedes. It turned out to be jewelry taken from the house in Skagit Key. The Thursday bust continued a hot streak for Tyler. On Wednesday morning, while on routine patrol, Tyler arrested two ex-convicts suspected of casing a north Bellevue home for a burglary. Police say the pair admitted they intended to burglarize the home, and that they had knocked on the front doors of two other houses, but were confronted by homeowners. “Officer Seth Tyler showed what excellent police work and collaboration in the Bellevue PD is all about,” said Police Chief Linda Pillo. “He was observant, he was aware of his surroundings and he acted on his suspicions to prevent this, and probably other burglaries.” SEE BURGLARY, 18

Bellevue gets top bond rating
The nation’s leading bond rating agencies have given Bellevue its top top rating. Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s last week gave Bellevue AAA and Aaa ratings, respectively. The ratings – the highest available to an organization – indicate the level of risk of city bonds. The high ratings means the city will pay lower interest rates on money it borrows for capital projects. “That Bellevue continues to receive the highest rating available is a tribute to the fiscal stewardship exercised by everyone in the organization,” said Jan Hawn, the city’s finance director. “City staff made sure we lived within our means the last few years as we wrestled with the economic downturn." Hawn said Bellevue is in a "great" position to finance some of its major capital projects, such as work related to the East Link light rail line.

International School in the Bellevue School District is one of the top 10 public high schools in the nation, according to the newly released 2013 Best High Schools rankings from U.S. News & World Report. It also ranks as the top school in the state. International is ranked ninth among the more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia reviewed by U.S. News. Newport High (91), Bellevue High (125) and Interlake High (282) finished among the top 300 schools in the nation and earned Gold Medal status. Bellevue schools also claimed four of the top 10 “Best Schools” spots in Washington state. In addition to International School’s top ranking, Newport placed third, Bellevue fourth and Interlake eighth. “I’m very pleased to see the hard work of our students, staff, parents and community reflected in these strong rankings,” said Superintendent Tim Mills. The 2013 U.S News Best High Schools list looks at state proficiency test data and how well schools prepare students for college. It’s a three-step process using data from the 2010-2011 school year. International School had a college readiness index of 100, which is based on the percentage of 12th graders who were tested and passed AP exams. All of the International students took the AP exam and all of them passed.
