A closer look at TAM's $15.5M expansion

Images Courtesy Olson Kundig Architects When Tacoma Art Museum completes its $15.5 million, 16,000-square-foot building expansion and renovation in late-2014, the expectation among its officials is that visitors will be impressed. The project will include a variety of new features and amenities: over 50 percent more gallery space and a more welcoming environment for the community to enjoy and explore the museum's collections; a new large-scale entry canopy that aims to create a junction between the existing museum and the new wing as a public gathering area, and visibly announce the museum to Tacoma's bustling cityscape; and the much-touted Haub Wing, which will house the Haub Family Collection, one of the leading collections of Western American art (the building, with its high windows and exterior screens, derives its aesthetic from pieces of Tacoma's history, such as traditional Native American long houses and historic railroad box cars, according to museum officials). Construction on the project, which is designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects and was unveiled earlier this month, is expected to begin this fall. The museum is part of Tacoma's Union DepotWarehouse Historic District/Union Station Conservation District. As such, Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission reviewed the design proposal Wednesday at City Hall. Commissioners reviewed a 22-page packet prepared by Olson Kundig Architects that included detailed diagrams and renderings. Many of those images are included in today's edition of the Tacoma Daily Index.
