Tacoma hires Cherullo as finance director

Officials gather to officially re-open Tacoma’s historic Murray Morgan Bridge

Posted online Fri., Feb. 15 Photo Courtesy City of Tacoma Officials gathered Friday morning in downtown Tacoma to celebrated the rededication and centennial of the recently rehabilitated Murray Morgan Bridge, which originally opened on Feb. 15, 1913. The rededication ceremony began with a crossthe-bridge procession of cyclists, pedestrians, and classic automobiles courtesy of Tacoma's LeMay Museum across the bridge. Lane Morgan, daughter of the late Murray Morgan, christened the bridge with a bottle of Harmon's 11th Street IPA, a brew created especially for the celebration. A plaque was unveiled to mark the bridge rechristening. Guests included Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, Washington State Department of Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond, Former State Representative Dennis Flanigan, Former Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma, and State Representative Jake Fey. The Murray Morgan Bridge has been closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic since November 2007, when a Washington State Department of Transportation inspection deemed the bridge structurally deficient. In January 2011, the City of Tacoma kicked off the almost two-year project of rehabilitating the bridge and restoring it to its original color. On Feb. 1, the Murray Morgan Bridge opened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Final work on the bridge will continue through February. TV Tacoma recorded the event and will air it online at tvtacoma.com.

Posted online Tues., Feb. 19 City of Tacoma officials announced Friday Andrew Cherullo has been selected as the new finance director at City Hall. Cherullo will serve as financial advisor to the city manager and Tacoma City Council, and oversee the operations and activities of the city's finance department. He will begin working at City Hall on Thurs., Feb. 28. The position has seen some turnover since Finance Director Bob Biles, who was hired in 2008, resigned on May 18, 2012. Assistant Finance Director Jeff Litchfield filled the position on an interim basis while Tacoma searched for a new finance director. Litchfield was hired last year as city manager of Hondo, Texas, and left Tacoma City Hall in August. Steve Call was hired as the interim finance director while the city worked to fill the position permanently. Most recently, Cherullo served as the chief financial officer for the Washington State Health Care Authority in Olympia, Wash. Cherullo also served as the deputy executive director, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for the Massachusetts School Building Authority, and as the budget director and revenue director for the Massachusetts House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, where he began his career as a budget analyst. Cherullo has bachelor's degrees in economics and political science from the University of Montana, and a master's degree in economics from Tufts University. "Andrew brings tremendous strategic insight and financial experience to our organization, and he will play a key leadership role as we execute on strategies to move our organization into a more sustainable financial future," said Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax. "I'm looking forward to joining the team at the City of Tacoma," said Cherullo. "I stand prepared to help the organization tackle its budgetary challenges, move in a positive direction and maintain financial performance during these challenging times."
