Firefighters fight a fire that was ablaze at a home Wednesday afternoon on Hawks Prairie Road.
A fire that took nearly an hour-and-a-half to extinguish destroyed a home Wednesday off Ault Field Road near Oak Harbor. The fire killed two dogs owned by the family. At approximately 11:45 a.m., firefighters from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a fire at a home on Hawks Prairie Road located behind the Market Town commer-
cial area near Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. When firefighters arrived, they found light brown smoke billowing from the eaves of the home. The family wasn’t home at the time of the fire, according to a news release from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue. Twenty-six firefighters from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and Navy
Region Northwest Battalion 3 responded to the fire. The news release states that fire suppression effort were hindered because of the home’s construction. It had a heavy plywood reinforced ceiling kept the fire confined to the attic and made accessing the fire difficult. Firefighters climbed onto the roof of the home and made ventilation holes to
relieve buildup of superheated gases to limit the spread of the fire and also apply water to the main part of the fire. The roof suffered a partial collapse in the area that sustained the heaviest damage, according to the release. Officials declared the fire contained at 1:16 p.m. Nobody was home and See Fire, A13
Beauty queen gets 4 years for 2003 murder
Washington author attends sentencing By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter
A dramatic scene unfolded inside Island County Superior Court Monday morning at the sentencing hearing of a former beauty queen who became a celebrity after being suspected of murder. A line of TV cameras pursued 47-year-old Peggy Sue Thomas as she entered court. A crew from NBC’s Dateline filmed her every move inside the court as true-crime writer Ann Rule
watched from the audience. Judge Alan Hancock sentenced Thomas to four years in prison, which was the recommended sentence and the maximum he could impose. Thomas pleaded guilty to rendering criminal assistance in the first degree as part of a plea bargain last month, just days before she was set to go to trial for the murder of Russel Douglas, 32. Thomas’ former boyfriend, James Huden, was sentenced last year to 80

Thomas remained silent in court, but became emotional at the start of the hearing as she spoke with
her two daughters. A corrections deputy searched Thomas in court and took her to jail. Under the terms of her plea, Thomas admitted to helping Huden after the murder was committed, yet Hancock said he believes
Thomas was involved in the murder. Thomas was the only connection between Douglas and James Huden, said Hancock. Thomas worked as a hairdresser with Douglas’ estranged wife, Brenna, in Langley.
