County names preferred site for transfer station By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com
King County has identified its preferred alternative for a new recycling and transfer station in South King County. And it is neither of the two com-
mercial sites in Auburn that had caused so much concern last fall. According to an email that Pat McLaughlin, division director of King County’s Solid Waste Division, sent to the City of Auburn last Friday, the preferred alterna-
tive is at 28721 W. Valley Highway S., northwest of the 37th Street Northwest and West Valley Highway intersection. King County records describe the site as 222,156 square feet of vacant, industrial land, north of Alaska Span Trans-

OPENS FOR TRAINING
Jockey Jennifer Whitaker, above, takes Wasserman, Emerald Downs’ all-time leading earner, for a workout last Friday, the official start of winter training at the Auburn track. Whitaker has been aboard the 11-year-old gelding literally thousands of times the last eight years – in 59 of 74 career races, including six stakes wins, and for virtually every jog, gallop and workout along the way. Whitaker knows Wasserman as well as anyone does. “He’s really happy, he loves it here,” Whitaker said. “He’d rather be here than the farm.” Some 60 horses were on the grounds on a recent foggy Friday morning. The horse total will increase daily for the 75-day meeting run from mid-April to late September. RACHEL CIAMPI, Auburn Reporter
