Murray Morgan Bridge Tacoma's vital link is restored

Land stewardship group to sell 95-acre Pierce County farm Posted online Tues., Feb. 5 Photo Courtesy PCC Farmland Trust PCC Farmland Trust, a non-profit organize that aims to secure, preserve and steward threatened farmland in the Pacific Northwest, has announced it is accepting offers from experienced farmers for purchase of the Sturgeon Farm, a 95-acre farm located in Orting and the Puyallup River Valley. According to PCC Farmland Trust officials, Sturgeon Farm was operated as a dairy until the late1990s, and includes an estimated 70 acres of tillable ground, 20 acres of pasture, five acres total of forested upland slope, numerous farm buildings, perimeter fencing, water rights, and one home site for a new build. The asking price for the farm is a firm $620,000 and is based on a current appraisal. The farm is located in an open space corridor that is a continuum between Mt. Rainier National Park and Commencement Bay and is directly adjacent to the recently conserved 100-acre Orting Valley Farms consisting of three separate organic farm operations. Farmers interested in purchasing the property must submit a formal offer to PCC Farmland Trust, including a current business plan and demonstration of financing pre-approval from an agricultural lender by June 30, 2013. Currently listed at appraised value, only full offers for the entire 95 acres will be entertained. More information is available online at pccfarmlandtrust.org/work-with-us/need-land/current-opportunities.

Photos By Todd Matthews, Editor City of Tacoma officials re-opened the Murray Morgan Bridge to vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Feb. 1. The bridge has been closed since November 2007 when a Washington State Department of Transportation inspection deemed it structurally deficient. In January 2011, the City of Tacoma kicked off the almost two-year project of rehabilitating the bridge and restoring it to its original color. The Murray Morgan Bridge serves as a vital link between downtown Tacoma and both the East Foss Peninsula and the Port of Tacoma. It provides an emergency route for the port, fire and police services. Bridge access also fosters economic development on the East Foss Peninsula and will improve access to businesses, according to city officials. The city will celebrate the 100th anniversary and re-opening of the Murray Morgan Bridge with a slate of special events. On Tuesday, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland officially declared Feb. 11-16 as "Murray Morgan Bridge Week." Tacoma businesses are celebrating by offering discounts and specials to customers. The celebration will also include a 5-kilometer evening fun run on Thurs., Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. and a rededication and christening ceremony on Fri., Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. For more information, visit tacomadailyindex.com.
