Economic splash: Pac-12 swims to FW By CASEY OLSON colson@fedwaymirror.com
The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center will be a very busy place in a little over a month. The Pac-12 Conference announced Wednesday afternoon
that the aquatic center in Federal Way will host the Men’s Swimming Championships from March 3-6. The massive meet was originally scheduled to take place at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif., but was moved to Federal Way due to an emergency
closure of the facility. The men’s event will begin immediately following the women’s meet at the aquatic center, which is set to run from Feb. 27 through March 2, along with both the men’s and women’s diving championships. Typically, the men’s conference
meet takes place the weekend after the women’s meet to better mesh with the NCAA championship calendar, but the Pac-12 commissioners thought it was the easiest transition to hold the events concurrently in Federal Way. [ more SWIMMERS, back page ]
Council appoints Noble-Gulliford and Maloney to fill vacant seats
By CASEY OLSON colson@fedwaymirror.com
The ultimate goal of most motivated high school students is to continue their education at a college or university. But some students have a harder road than others. Four such students made impassioned pleas to the Federal Way School Board during its Jan. 22 meeting regarding the much-publicized DREAM Act. The students hailed from Federal Way High School and asked the board to pass a resolution supporting the DREAM Act, which would provide a path to legal residency and citizenship to collegebound, undocumented students who have been educated in the United States. “This bill, if passed, will provide tremendous opportunities for my undocumented friends,” Federal Way sophomore Jenesis Garcia said. UPDATE
Following a day of interviews and deliberations, Kelly Maloney and Diana Noble-Gulliford became the newest members of the Federal Way City Council. A final list of 20 applicants competed for the seats vacated by Linda Kochmar and Roger Freeman, who were elected to the state House of Representatives last November. Maloney and Noble-Gulliford both took the oath of office Jan. 19 at City Hall. Maloney has had a career in marketing and business. She has worked on economic development projects with the city, including a recent TV commercial and branding message for the “Think Federal Way” campaign. In addition to initiatives aimed at improving the local business environment, Maloney has also owned and operated two small businesses in the communications field. She is currently the director of marketing for Orion Industries, an aerospace product manufacturer in Federal Way. Noble-Gulliford has community roots that extend back before Federal Way’s cityhood. She is president of the Historical Society of Federal Way, an active cultural force in the community that has led efforts to honor veterans and preserve local history. Examples of the latter include publication of a Federal Way history book and securing grants for remodeling historic landmarks like the cabins at West Hylebos Park. Noble-Gulliford also has experience serving on city boards such as the planning commission. [ more COUNCIL, back page ]
