Monday’s nearly freezing temperatures were not enough to stop about a dozen individuals from participating in a park restoration event at the Watershed Preserve in unincorporated King County just outside of Redmond. The event was held as part of the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which honors the late reverend on the holiday bearing his name by encouraging people to give back to their communities. For their part, the group at the Watershed Preserve, led by forest steward Mike Shaw, spent the day planting native trees and plants along the road running through the park. “It’s a great way to honor Dr. King and the service he provided to this country,” Shaw told the group about them volunteering their time. Shaw became a steward in 2010 through Forterra, an organization whose mis-

During the warmer seasons, the Green Redmond Partnership and City of Redmond hold work parties at various parks throughout the city each month as part of the Last Saturday of the Month program. The Grand Chapiteau seats more than 2,600 people, takes eight days to set up, stands 62 feet high and is 167 feet in diameter and requires 550 pegs (4 feet each) to hold it firmly to the ground. The Cirque travels via 65 trailers carrying close to 2,000 tons of equipment. The Cirque’s “Amaluna” will run from Jan. 31 to March 17. andy nystrom, Redmond Reporter

When Sharon Ilstrup traveled to Washington, D.C. with her family last weekend, the big plan was to attend President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Monday. The Redmond resident had wanted to attend the official inaugural ball later that night with her husband Blake as well. Unfortunately, Ticketmaster — the sales agent in charge of the ticketing process — had accidentally released the special login information for ticket purchases a day early and the couple missed their chance to get tickets. “I was bummed,” Ilstrup said. After the mixup, she told a friend who lives in Washington, D.C. that they would not be attending the ball. The friend, who works as an editor at CNN, asked why. After Ilstrup explained the situation with Ticketmaster, the 24-hour news network interviewed her for a story. KING 5 also interviewed Ilstrup and her husband. That story aired Jan. 18. U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who was still home in the [ more trip page 6 ]
