wo weeks of swirling and contradictory reports based on unnamed sources and cryptic public statements about the return of the NBA to Seattle came to a jubilant end on Monday as the sale of the Sacramento Kings to a publicityshy investor became official.

This time last year, few in Seattle could pick Chris Hansen out of a crowd of the hundreds of thousands of crestfallen Sonics fans pining for the loss of their franchise. Today he’s a newly christened public hero, as he and other investors, including Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, reportedly forked over $340 million to the Maloof family and another owner for a 65 percent share of the team. The exact terms of the deal were confidential.

Sen. Tom’s Caucus

Washington state Democrats are fuming over the decision of two of their legislators to join Republicans to take over the Senate.

“Perfidious” is what some Democratic activists are calling Senators Rodney Tom and Tim Sheldon.

Why’d they do it?

A Machiavellian play for power has been suggested, but it seems likely that something deeper was at work. Sheldon tells SW that, as a legislator from a rural district (comprising parts of Mason, Thurston, and Kitsap counties), he got tired of the Puget Sound–centrism evident among Democrats.

If they remained in control this year, he says, the lion’s share of Senate committee chairs would have gone to legislators from either Seattle or Tacoma. Last year, in what he sees as evidence of “insensitivity” to his part of the state, the Democrats proposed a budget that would have cut $1.2 million from the Mason County budget.

Perhaps even more than Sheldon, Tom seems like a man caught between parties. The Mercer Island legislator used to be a Republican, then switched sides in 2006, explaining that the “far right has complete control” of the GOP. Yet when he got to the Democratic caucus, says Deputy King County Executive Fred Jarrett, a former legislator and friend of Tom, “I think he found that he did not fit there as well as he would like to.”

Tom tells SW that he still considers himself a “staunch Democrat,” but also concedes that he’s more fiscally conservative than many in his party. He says Democrats have a “We can’t say no to anybody” approach, particularly when it comes to their favorite government-funded programs.

It’s hard to know what the now-reigning Republicans in the Senate will do this year, but on at least one key issue, the two parties may not be as far apart as some believe.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn, in an interview with SW, observes that both parties now recognize that they are obliged to come up with much more money for schools—a state Supreme Court ruling ordering just that gives them no choice. “The Democrats are saying $4 billion, the Republicans are saying $3.5 billion,” Dorn says. He adds that the parties don’t agree on how to come up with the money, but in dollar amounts, they’re within shouting distance of each other. NINA SHAPIRO E news@seattleweekly.com

Maybe it was her background as an attorney general, or maybe it was her natural inclination, but as governor, Chris Gregoire was an extraordinarily tough clemency judge. She granted leniency far less often than her predecessor Gary Locke had, denying even cases that the state Clemency and Pardons Board thought warranted mercy.

“Her standards were tough and stayed tough until the end,” says Jeff Ellis, a Portland-based defense attorney who worked on several clemency cases in Washington.

“Also, she never used her clemency power in a political way. Status or who you know did not make a difference.”

That’s not to say she didn’t loosen up just a bit in her final days. Before leaving office last week, Gregoire granted 10 pardons or commutations, including two of Ellis’ clients: Stonney Marcus Rivers, sentenced to life on a three-strikes-and-you’re-out conviction after a motel-room robbery, and Ethan Durden, who burglarized the homes of drug dealers, earning a 22-year sentence.

Not so lucky was Joseph Scott Wharton.

When Wharton, now 49, was sentenced to life in 1997, King County Superior Court Judge Michael Fox declared the case “tragic.”

Wharton had committed a string of robberies in Kent, earning him a third strike. “Certainly, there were instances where victims were scared out of their wits and felt threatened, and these are very serious crimes,” Fox observed as he sentenced Wharton, according to The Seattle Times. “But Mr. Wharton never struck anybody, he never shot anybody or stabbed anybody.” Yet, he said, the threestrikes law gave him no choice but to condemn Fox to prison for the rest of his life.

In recent years, though, prosecutors have realized that they have far more discretion under the three-strikes law than previously thought. In nonviolent cases, prosecutors will now frequently downgrade a charge so that it doesn’t trigger a three-strikes penalty. About five years ago, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg launched a review of old cases to address what he said was an inconsistency between the way his office had been handling cases prior and the way they were handled at the time. And he began to support clemency petitions for those he felt had been unfairly sentenced.

Wharton made Satterberg’s list. In a November letter written to Gregoire and the state Clemency and Pardons Board, Satterberg noted that Wharton’s crimes were driven by his crack habit, since broken. Fox also supported Wharton’s clemency petition, as did conservative radio personality John Carlson, who’d co-authored the threestrikes law.

In a letter to the board, Carlson said he had supported clemency only once before for a three-striker (Stevan Dozier, whose 1994 robbery conviction resulted in an automatic life sentence). Wharton earned his support, Carlson said, because of his “sincere, repeated, and successful” efforts to address his drug addiction and his “efforts to help younger inmates turn their lives around.”

On Dec. 7, the board voted unanimously to

recommend clemency. A little over a month later, Gregoire told Wharton’s attorney, Harry Schneider, that she hadn’t had sufficient time to review the case, and that it would be best handled by the new governor.

“The clock ran out,” says Satterberg.

“Nobody knows how long it will take the new governor to turn his attention to clemency and pardons, but it typically takes at least a few years for new administrations to get comfortable with the exercise of that extraordinary power.”

Still, Schneider says he’s hopeful that Jay Inslee will tackle the case at least before his first term is up. NINA SHAPIRO

SRAEL KEYES killed people, but he didn’t have an exact count, he said,

sitting at a table in an Alaskan jailhouse, hands folded in the lap of his jumpsuit. A dozen? Keyes couldn’t say for sure. Or wouldn’t. But eight seemed a good number, including four he killed in Washington, where he was raised, served in the Army, and began to murder strangers.

Thirty-four years old, uncaring eyes set deep in a stony face, Keyes began to recite his modus operandi as if reading off a checklist from the serial killer’s handbook.

Rule #1: Must have multiple personalities.

“There is no one who knows me,” he said in a raspy voice, “or who has ever known me, who knows anything about me, really.” Talk with them and you’ll get the he-wasa-nice-quiet-guy answer.

“They are going to tell you something that does not line up with anything I tell you because I’m two different people, basically,” he continued. “And the only person who

one of Israel Keyes’ family, girlfriends, co-workers, or buddies, officials say, apparently suspected he had been killing and raping strangers and robbing banks from the Olympics to the Adirondacks, from Canada to Mexico, for more than a

decade.

“Keyes told us he was able to make up excuses why he’d go off for long periods of time,” says Kevin Feldis, an assistant U.S. Attorney in Anchorage. “He did say, though, that it was becoming more difficult to live with others and still commit his long-distance crimes.”

But at the start of the century, not even law-enforcement authorities knew there might be a serial killer roaming the U.S. Until he began his jailhouse interviews last year, only Keyes knew of the connection between, for example, the June 9, 2011 abduction, rape, and strangulation of Lorraine Currier, 55, in Vermont, and the Feb. 1, 2012 abduction, rape, and strangulation of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig in Alaska. Keyes confessed to both murders, and to killing Currier’s husband Bill.

Keyes had been off the radar, living at the northwest tip of the continental U.S. in Neah Bay, staying at his rundown home in the woods near the St. Lawrence River in New York, or taking up residence in Alaska with a girlfriend and his daughter.

From Anchorage last year, he continued the murder marathon he’d begun in Washington more than a decade earlier, hopping jets to the lower 48 and setting out on scouting treks in rented cars. For mayhem, it

There was the likable, easygoing Keyes, who became an atheist despite—or perhaps because of—being raised in a Bible-thumping home of 10 kids. In adulthood, he grew to be an efficient carpenter and craftsman with a 10-year-old daughter.

Then there was the mysterious loner Keyes, who read up on Ted Bundy and became a travelin’ man, making up stories so he could disappear for days and weeks at a time. A sociopath and an alcoholic, he got off on the nightmarish terror he saw in the eyes of his victims.

Good Keyes could be funny, Bad Keyes tended toward morbid. Once when he used an ATM, the bank video recorded him wearing a ghastly “Ghostface” mask similar to the one worn by the serial killer of teens in the Scream movie series. It was Bad Keyes’ idea of a joke: The bank card he was using had been stolen from his latest serial victim, a teen girl he’d killed and dismembered.

As he sat in the Alaskan jail and reminisced last year, the FBI agent and police officer interviewing him tried not to appear overeager, one of them jotting down occasional notes on a legal pad. They nodded and asked short, encouraging questions as the overhead camera recorded Keyes’ travelogue of killings.

Rule #2: Pick your victims at random.

“Back when I was smart [before he got caught] . . . I would let them come to me in a remote area,” the slightly built, curly-haired murderer said. “I would go to a remote area that’s not anywhere near where you live, but that other people go to as well.”

And if you’re choosing people to kill, he said, you can’t be too picky.

“You might not get exactly what you [want].” But on the upside, “there’s also no witnesses, really. There’s nobody else around.”

Yet, unlike serial killers who are more likely to terrorize their own communities, Keyes had a signature tactic: He literally went the extra mile to target strangers, traveling hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles—in one case, at least 6,000 miles round-trip—to find his desired targets. He blended into the landscapes of faraway towns, watching potential victims or scoping out neighborhoods for the right house. He especially favored secluded parks, trailheads, and—more Bad Keyes humor—graveyards.

As he explained to his jailhouse inquisitors, he saw America as one big killing field. Investigators would later confirm that Keyes racked up tens of thousands of miles over the past 15 years, much of them traveled in search of victims. From just October 2004 to March 2012, he took at least 35 road trips and flights, traveling for weeks on end throughout the continental U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii.

Some trips were made to commit crimes, others for non-lethal pleasures—visiting family members living in the East, Midwest, and South.

The builder and handyman helped supplement his jaunts with the proceeds of several U.S. bank robberies along the way, officials say.

It was worth the time and money, Keyes told Alaska FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden and Anchorage Police officer Jeff Bell during the taped jailhouse interviews. Murder, he said, was “a rush.”

Goeden could see Keyes was thrilled to recount his bloody adventures.

“He enjoyed it. He liked what he was doing,” she would tell reporters after conducting 40 hours of talks with Keyes.

Bell agreed. To anyone who would ask why he killed, Keyes would answer: “Why not?”

dark,” erasing any electronic trail by turning off his cell phone and using cash instead of credit cards.

At various remote locations, he also took the time to strategically hide “Kill Kits,” as officials called them—burying weapons, body-disposal tools, and chemicals for later use. Investigators say he claimed to have buried the kits in half-a-dozen states; they’ve found two so far, in New York and Alaska.

One contained a shovel and jugs of Drano.

Only Keyes knew of his link to at least five other murders he would briefly sketch out during the months of questioning after his March 13 arrest in Texas last year. He also described at least two bank robberies he cleanly pulled off: one in 2009 in Tupper Lake, New York, and another near Fort Worth, Texas, last February.

Officials suspect there were more.

Though the heists were thousands of miles and years apart, security-camera videos show him wearing the same striped and padded gloves and holding what appears to be the same silver-and-black semiautomatic handgun at both banks. In other words, he had a pattern.

The long-winded Keyes also confessed to the burglary and arson of a home in Texas, and the abduction and rape of a teen Oregon girl in the late 1990s, when Keyes was around 18.

Additionally, he said in the interviews, he had been on the verge of committing three other murders last spring. From a sniper’s position at an Alaska park, he had trained his rifle—equipped with a homemade silencer—on a man and a woman when a police officer happened to pull up and chat with them. He then decided to take out the cop as well. But a second officer suddenly appeared, and Keyes backed off. “I almost got myself into a lot of trouble on that one,” he said with a chuckle.

The Oregon rape was his first real crime, Keyes said. But now that he was admitting to having murdered or assaulted people most of his adult life, police wondered what he might have done in his youth. Keyes grew up in Colville, a small Stevens County town (population 4,700) about 70 miles north of Spokane. That’s where he got his adolescent jollies, he told investigators, by torturing house pets. That’s also where a 12-year-old disabled girl was killed in 1996, when Keyes was around 17, her prosthetic feet found in a river and her body hidden in the woods. Did Keyes have a role in that?

He wasn’t saying.

And who were all these other victims he refused to identify? Could he have been the killer of, say, Seattle librarian Mary Cooper and her daughter, Susanna Stodden, shot to death at the Pinnacle Lake trailhead in Snohomish County in 2006? That memorable case occurred while Keyes still lived in Washington, and seems to fit his m.o.

On the other hand, investigators also had to weigh whether Keyes was exaggerating his murderous prowess. After all, in that Anchorage jailhouse interview room from April to December last year, he was running the show. Sometimes sipping coffee and nibbling at a bagel, he sat at the head of a long table, offering elaborate testimony

on the Koenig and Currier murders, aware that police already had enough evidence to make a conviction likely.

But he gave scant details of the four Washington slayings and another on the East Coast, allowing only that he buried that victim’s body somewhere in New York state. He also led investigators to believe there could be at least three more victims beyond the eight he claimed. As he talked, major cold-case investigations were quietly launched in Seattle and elsewhere.

“We continue to review all unsolved homicides and many missing-persons cases across the state,” Seattle FBI spokesperson Ayn Dietrich says. “We don’t have an exact number, but it’s in the dozens.”

Noting that law-enforcement agencies are involved coast-to-coast, Dietrich adds, “It’s challenging because the victims we know of span such a diverse range of age and circumstances.” The more Keyes talked with investigators, the more inscrutable his crime trail seemed to become.

he killer’s strategy of driving or flying extraordinary distances to randomly select a target was adopted by Keyes in part from the m.o. of another Washington serial killer, Ted Bundy. His legendary murder trail stretched from the Northwest to Florida, where Bundy, raised in Tacoma, died in the electric chair at age 42 in 1989.

In fact, Keyes’ murder marathon at one point took him to Bundy’s birthplace, Burlington, Vermont, where Keyes ended up abducting and killing Lorraine Currier and husband Bill. Bundy, the self-described “most cold-hearted son-of-a-bitch you will ever meet,” was born there in 1946 to then21-year-old Louise Cowell at the unwed mother’s home. (She claimed to have been “seduced” by a sailor.)

Young Ted Cowell was raised to believe his grandparents were his parents and that

mom Louise was his older sister. After marrying Tacoma hospital cook Johnny Bundy in 1951, Louise told him the full story. She defended her son to the end, once telling the Tacoma News Tribune, “Ted Bundy does not go around killing women and little children!” She died last month, at 88, from “a long illness.”

As The Burlington Free Press recently reported, Keyes was “stunned” during his jailhouse confessionals when detectives asked him if he knew that Burlington was the notorious killer’s hometown. As it turned out, the paper said, “Keyes had traveled to his idol’s birthplace and didn’t even know it.”

Nonetheless, “He knew a lot about Ted Bundy,” said Anchorage police detective Monique Doll at a December news conference. Keyes had studied Bundy and other murderers, although, Doll noted, “he was very careful to say that he had not patterned himself after any other serial killers, that his ideas were his own.”

Keyes differed from Bundy in two obvious categories: Keyes covered more ground, and he didn’t wait around for an executioner to finish him off.

On the morning of Sunday, December 2, Keyes was found dead by suicide in his Anchorage jail cell, having slit his wrists with a contraband razor blade and hanged himself with a bedsheet. He was a month and five days short of his 35th birthday. He left a note, too bloodied to decipher, officials said, though it’s being analyzed at an FBI lab.

Alaskans weren’t exactly saddened to hear that the man they knew as the accused murderer of Samantha Koenig had saved taxpayers the time and money to convict and imprison him. Some wanted him dead from the beginning: When Keyes tried to make a Bundy-like run for it from the courtroom during a hearing last year, the Anchorage Daily News reported that some members of the audience shouted “Kill him!” as guards quickly subdued Keyes.

But in the days following his suicide, authorities began to reveal details and release videotapes of his confessions to the murders of Koenig and the Curriers. They also announced he had admitted to killing others, opening a whole new catalog of coldcase slayings. To keep Keyes talking, police had agreed with his request to withhold any disclosures of their findings while the confessions were in progress.

They hadn’t solved all his alleged crimes, authorities conceded. But they felt they’d solved the puzzle of Israel Keyes. He “didn’t kidnap and kill people because he was crazy,” Detective Doll said. “He didn’t kidnap and kill people because his deity told him to or because he had a bad childhood. Israel Keyes did this because he got an immense amount of enjoyment out of it, much like an addict gets an immense amount of enjoyment out of drugs.”

He took pleasure from recounting his homicidal feats as well, and was not considered a suicide risk, authorities said. So his surprise death was perhaps a final defiant act in a life filled with them, leaving police holding notebooks of tantalizing, half-told tales of murder.

“That was a real setback for the investigation of the other cases,” says Seattle FBI spokesperson Dietrich. “It could take years, and then some.”

As the accused killer of Koenig, Keyes was charged in federal court with “kidnapping resulting in death,” a capital crime. With the death penalty looming and evidence mounting, Keyes decided to open up.

U.S. Attorney Feldis explains how that came about: “We laid out our photos, videos, the ATM records, and other evidence, and explained there was no doubt he’d be convicted [of the Koenig murder]. With his attorney’s approval, he agreed to talk. That’s when he confessed.”

But then he didn’t stop with Koenig. Investigators had found news reports on the Vermont double murder stored on Keyes’ home computer, and asked him about it.

“He continued to talk, and we became convinced this [Koenig’s murder] was not the first time he had killed someone,” says Feldis.

With his attorney, federal public defender Rich Curtner, not present, Keyes chose to open up about the other crimes.

Feldis and fellow assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Russo developed what they considered a lawful way to continue the talks. “Keyes wanted to talk to us and did so willingly—that was his choice,” says Feldis. “We read him his Miranda rights each time, and advised he could have an attorney present, and each time he waived that right.”

Curtner and Keyes’ two court-appointed Seattle attorneys, Jackie Walsh and Mark Larranaga, did not respond to requests for comment. However, it appears they opposed the continuing talks. In a federal court filing in October, Walsh noted that “the government’s repeated contact with Mr. Keyes” was “interfering with counsels’ ability” to properly defend their client.

Facing possible execution, Keyes may have hoped to plea-bargain a life sentence in return for his confessions. Green River killer Gary Ridgway did that in Seattle in 2003. By helping investigators unearth some of his victims’ hidden remains, Ridgway worked a life-withoutparole plea deal even though he had killed, officially, 48 women. (He said his body count likely numbered more than 70, but he had lost track).

Keyes never asked during the conversations that the death penalty be taken off the table, Feldis says, “although we had not made the decision yet whether to ask for it.”

So why was Keyes spilling his secrets?

“He had felt increasingly emboldened and invincible over time,” Feldis says. “He committed crimes his whole life, and was never caught. I don’t think he really ever even had close calls. He told us he never planned to be taken alive. He thought he would shoot it out with police in the end.” After being taken down without a shot by a single officer in Texas, he was defeated, and ready to tell his story.

He had reigned at least as long as Gary Ridgway. And he outdistanced Ted Bundy, whose 30-murder spree covered seven states between 1974 and 1978, though he, like Ridgway, is thought to have more victims.

What worries investigators today is, if Keyes roamed farther and was active longer than Bundy, could he have killed more than his idol?

is first murder, Keyes told authorities, was the double slaying of a couple in Washington sometime just after 2001, about the time he left military service at Fort Lewis and settled in Neah Bay, on the Olympic Peninsula. He says he also killed two others in the state, in separate incidents, between 2005 and 2006, but gave no further details.

“It is unknown if these victims were residents of Washington or if they were vacationing in Washington but resided in another

well liked here,” said Irving.

Keyes moved to Anchorage in 2007, where he started up a small carpentry/construction business and later moved in with a new girlfriend. His daughter also lived with him part of the time. He left behind no record of serious legal violations in Washington other than a minor traffic stop in Thurston County in 2002 and a drunk-driving bust at Fort Lewis in 2001.

For the latter infraction, he did a day at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac and was fined $375.

According to interviews and police and public records as well as his videotaped confessions and investigators’ press conferences, Keyes was the second-born of a Mormon couple on January 7, 1978, in Richmond, Utah, near Salt Lake City. His parents relocated to Colville when he was of preschool age. He was subsequently home-schooled, as were his nine siblings—some given earthy, Biblical names, such as sisters Sunshine, Charity, Hosanna, and Autumnrose.

Theirs was a family built around stern religious beliefs, which over the years included Mormon, Amish, and Christian Identity practices. Israel learned early to use his hands, building a log cabin when he was 16, according to a posting last year on his one-man Alaska construction-company website.

Family members living in Indiana and Texas did not respond to requests for comment. Kimberly Anderson, the woman who lived with Keyes in Anchorage at the time of his arrest, could not be reached. But prosecutor Feldis says she is not a suspect and had no

A recent online newsletter from an Indiana food co-op describes Autumnrose and Hosanna Keyes as “sisters in a large family living in the country near Harlan and Grabill. They have lived all of their lives on a homestead and have taken an interest in various homesteading arts,” including how to make goat-milk soap.

Autumnrose Keyes has, however, described the family atmosphere growing up and her struggle with religious teachings in a “Testimony” she wrote in 2011. It was posted on the website of the Church of Wells, a controversial evangelical church in Wells, Texas, which her mother, Heidi, attended.

“Around the age of 11 and 12, my heart turned in rebellion toward my parents,” she states.

“My two older sisters and I were in a kind of revolt against them. We had friends they did not like, we secretly listened to music they forbade, and we got away with as much as we could . . .

“At 13 I fell into grievous sin that my parents did not know about. I began to doubt God’s existence and planned to leave my family as soon as possible and dive head-first into sin. I’ve thanked God many times for my earthly father, who was a strict man. When my sins came to light by God’s mercy, he pulled me away from my circumstances and moved the family to an Amish community.

“Things must have looked patched up.

After some time, we had a new life, we had friends in the community, and we definitely

state,” says Mary Rook, special agent in charge of the Anchorage FBI office. “It is also possible Keyes abducted them from a nearby state and transported them to Washington.”

Keyes and his family left Colville in the late 1990s, relocating to an Amish community in Maine. In July 1998, young Keyes, who had recently bought a small, isolated house in Constable, New York, joined the Army and was inducted in New Jersey. He trained at Fort Hood, Texas, then was stationed at Fort Lewis until July 2001, doing a brief tour in Egypt. An Army spokesperson says Spec.

Keyes served honorably as an “indirect fire infantryman” capable of manning mortars and handling automatic weapons as well as locating and neutralizing land mines.

Details about his post-Army life are still emerging, but Keyes lived and worked as a carpenter and handyman on the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay for most of the next six years. A Makah Tribal Council spokesperson refused to comment, but Tribal Police Chief Charles Irving says that Keyes had been employed as a maintenance worker for the council, handling repair jobs and construction chores.

Keyes didn’t stand out as anything other than a likable guy, Irving says. He lived with a woman who bore their child, and he seemed to have kept out of trouble. “He had no runins with the police,” said the chief, who noted that the Makah community was taken aback at news of Keyes’ murderous past. “A lot of people were surprised because he was pretty

my parents, yet not a closeness or submission. My father passed away when I was 18. I regretted so much my rebellion and the cold distance I’d had toward my father.”

She describes a long period of confusion in her attempts to believe in God and seek eternal life. A few years ago, though, she said God “gave me the holy spirit” after she followed His command to be baptized.

Chevie, who in 1996 murdered Arkansas gun dealer William Mueller and his wife and small daughter in an attempt to help cover up Timothy McVeigh’s role in the Oklahoma City bombing, was on the run when he was memorably caught on videotape attempting to kill an Ohio state trooper and a sheriff’s deputy in a wild shootout.

srael Keyes, conversely, became a resolute nonbeliever, though he was in apparent agony about it, according to Jacob Gardner, a pastor at the Church of Wells. He says he met Heidi Keyes in Indiana, and she and other family members followed Gardner when he moved to the east Texas church. (Some called the church a cult after the death of a member’s baby last May.

Morlin, a former reporter for the Spokane Spokesman-Review, quotes Pastor Henry on the law center’s Hatewatch website as saying of Keyes, “I know his family lived here for a time. I don’t remember seeing him here at our church, but he could have been.”

However, Henry later told a Spokane TV station that the Kehoe brothers came to the church only once, and that Keyes attended a

Gardner describes Israel Keyes as breaking down in tears when family members got into a debate over religion after the wedding of one of the Keyes daughters last February.

Gardner, who didn’t respond to requests for comments, posted an audio recording online of a sermon he gave in December describing the event. When one family member asked Israel Keyes when it was that he “chose to hate God,” Keyes began to tremble. “He could not answer,” says Gardner.

Others told Keyes they had prayed and wept for his godless soul. One of his sisters— totally unaware of his crimes, the pastor says—told Keyes, “It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, God will forgive you.” The sister was fighting back tears and so was Keyes, who told her, “You don’t know what I’ve done . . . I have to drink every day to forget about it.”

Says Gardner: “Finally it got so heated, it was so impassioned, [Israel] broke down weeping in the middle of the reception.”

Keyes did, however, attend an area church as a teen in Colville, as did two of his childhood friends and neighbors, young Chevie and Cheyne Kehoe, who went on to become notorious domestic terrorists and white supremacists and are now in prison for murder and attempted murder.

According to Bill Morlin of Montgomery, Alabama’s Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups in America, the Kehoes and Keyeses were members of a church called The Ark, which preached

couple of times but never returned. He said he was turned off by the threesome because they all acted like “hot shots.” His church no longer believes in white supremacy, Henry added. “Our Heavenly Father made every race and he made them because he wanted them. He doesn’t put one above the other.”

hough Keyes told Alaska investigators he tortured cats as a kid and had emotional issues, could he have killed 12-year-old Julie Harris of Colville in 1996? A Special Olympics champion with artificial feet, Harris’ body wasn’t found until a month after her March disappearance. Launched originally to find the then-missing Samantha Koenig, the Facebook site has since been renamed “Have You Ever Met Israel Keyes?” Several posters, including one who lived in Colville, figured the Harris slaying likely set off young Keyes on his longdistance journey to murder.

But a spokesperson for the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office says that while a review of the case was made, there’s no apparent connection between Keyes and Harris’ murder.

Stevens County Sheriff Kendle Allen also recently told a local reporter that Keyes is not a suspect and that “he was a kid when he lived here.” (News stories from 1996 indicate the person of interest in the killing was actually a boyfriend of the mother’s, who weeks earlier had assaulted the girl’s brother.)

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office had no comment on any Keyes connection to the 2006 Cooper/Stodden murders at Pinnacle Lake, although the Seattle FBI office indicates the case is among the many that have been or are being reviewed. The murders fit into Keyes’ timeline of being in Washington and

bear similarities to his near-shootings of a couple and a cop in an Alaska park. But the slayings do not match the description Keyes gave of his Washington killings. Rather, he told of two separate homicides in that time period.

In Eugene, Oregon, detectives do see Keyes as a possible suspect in the 2005 Lane County campground murder of two local educators, Stevan Haugen, 54, and Jeanette Bauman, 56, and their dog. They were shot to death July 1, 2005, while on a camping and fly-fishing trip, the Eugene Register-Guard reports. There were no signs of struggle or sexual assault.

Other jurisdictions are reporting that they’ve reviewed cold cases but came up empty. In King County, for example, “We do not have anything that matches,” says King County Sheriff’s spokesperson Cindi West. “I don’t think they had specific enough information to give any agencies anything to really go

He led Bill to the basement and tied him up. Back at the car, Lorraine had almost gotten free, but Keyes tackled her as she started to run, then took her to the house’s second floor. Back in the basement, Bill was yelling for his wife, and Keyes began hitting him with a shovel. When he continued to yell, Keyes shot him to death.

Back upstairs, Lorraine likely knew her husband was dead. Keyes then raped her and choked her out during the sex act. Finally, he took her downstairs and strangled her to death.

State Attorney Donovan fought back tears as he recounted what he called the couple’s courageous attempts to fight back, and their love for each other. They were complete strangers to Keyes, he noted, and died frightening deaths.

He has her turn out the lights, then he crawls in through the service window. He is then seen leading her off toward his truck with her hands bound with plastic ties.

on. But talking with our detectives, there does not seem to be anything that fits.”

East Coast investigators have confirmed, however, that Keyes was the killer of the Curriers in Vermont last June, in a case that shows the lengths to which Keyes was willing to go to leave a cold trail. From Anchorage, he took a plane to Chicago (a gun and a dismantled silencer in his checked baggage), visited family in Indiana, possibly drove to his run-down home on a 10-acre plot in upstate New York, and then motored down to the Burlington area. There he checked into a motel and spent three days looking for his prey, eventually selecting the Curriers.

“He was specifically looking for a house that had an attached garage, no car in the driveway, no children, no dog,” Chittenden County State Attorney T. J. Donovan said at a Vermont news conference last month, relaying what Keyes had told Alaska investigators.

Keyes was swift and merciless. He cut phone lines outside the house, then broke through a door wearing a headlamp. In a matter of seconds, he confronted the couple in bed at gunpoint, bound them with zip ties,

» FROM PAGE 13 FBI account of events, Keyes drove around town, explaining he was kidnapping her for ransom. Koenig told Keyes her family did not have much money. Keyes said they could ask the public for help in raising it. He promised not to harm her if she cooperated.

He sent two text messages from her cell phone, one to her boyfriend, another to the owner of Common Grounds. The messages

made it appear Samantha was having a bad day and was leaving town for the weekend.

Keyes kept her cell phone, and got her ATM PIN number.

He then drove to his home, a house in West Anchorage owned by his girlfriend, isolated on a dirt road. Keyes put Koenig in a shed, tied her up, and turned the radio up so no one would hear if she screamed. He drove to Koenig’s house and got her ATM card from her truck, drove to an ATM, and successfully tested the PIN number. He returned to the shed.

Says the FBI report: “Keyes then sexually assaulted Samantha and asphyxiated her.

Keyes left her in the shed and then went back inside his house, where he packed for a preplanned cruise that he was taking from New Orleans. He left early that morning [February 2] for the cruise.”

While Anchorage officials and Koenig’s family and friends frantically searched for her, handing out flyers and holding a candlelight vigil, Keyes sailed around the Caribbean. He returned more than a week later and used Koenig’s cell phone to pretend she was still alive, sending a text message and demanding $30,000 ransom from her family.

The money was deposited in Koenig’s account and Keyes began to withdraw cash, first in Anchorage and later while he traveled south again, from Nevada through

Texas. The FBI, watching the account electronically, alerted local authorities each time he withdrew money. But he wore a disguise to fool the bank cameras, and always slipped away before police arrived.

Keyes had already broken most of the rules that he claimed to have abided by—not killing locally and leaving no trail. Then came another mistake: At one of the banks, in Arizona, where he had dutifully hidden his face with the Scream mask, the ATM camera recorded the image of his car, a rented white Ford Focus, driving off. An allpoints bulletin was issued.

A week later, on March 13, a highway patrolman stopped a white Ford Focus for speeding through Lufkin, Texas. After seeing Keyes’ Alaska driver’s license, the officer called for backup. Inside the car, investigators found an evidentiary jackpot: gun, dye-spattered cash from a Texas bank robbery, the Scream mask, and, most critically, Samantha Koenig’s cell phone and Visa debit card.

In the following months, during the jailhouse interviews in which he confessed to Koenig’s murder, Keyes couldn’t really explain why he didn’t follow his own crime rules.

Investigator Doll had a theory, though: Keyes had become captive to his drug-like compulsion. “In prior cases, he had enough self-control to walk away,” she said. “But with Samantha, he didn’t.”

n December 10, the federal case against Israel Keyes was officially dismissed, as the court order notes, “because the defendant is deceased.” But much of the legal story remains untold. The Alaska Dispatch, a feisty online news site in Anchorage operated by former Seattle Weekly writer Tony Hopfinger, is seeking to have the federal files unsealed.

“Transparency is essential to public accountability of the criminal-justice system,” Hopfinger says in an affidavit. “Given Mr. Keyes’ self-admitted and wide-roving killing spree, there is unquestionably huge public interest in and fascination with the defendant and the way the investigation and case progressed.” Federal officials last week said they don’t object to at least a partial release of records, leaving it for a judge to decide.

Two days before the barista’s murder case was closed, Keyes’ funeral was held in Deer Park, down the road from Colville.

His family picked Stevens County for the December 8 ceremony should any of Keyes’ old friends choose to show up. None did.

Only his mother, four of his sisters, and three brothers-in-law made up the small gathering of grievers at Lauer Funeral Home. All had flown into Spokane with pastor Jake Gardner, the only one who would speak with reporters. He made it clear that Keyes had earned no one’s forgiveness.

“Israel rejected the gospel and thus the outcome of his life is this tragic story,” said Gardner, standing outside in the snow. “He’s not in a better place. We believe that he’s in a place of eternal torment.”

Gardner said Keyes would be buried later.

The pastor would not say where. It seemed poetic justice. Much like Keyes hid the bodies of his victims, his family would hide his. E randerson@seattleweekly.com

Toiling for Gold

Early Chinese immigrants made no distinction between Canada and the United States when traveling to “Gold Mountain,” their colloquialism for North America. In David H.T. Wong’s graphic novel Escape to Gold Mountain (Arsenal, $19.95), racial prejudice knows no borders, either. Accessible in a way that dry history textbooks are not, his account covers the hardships of ChineseCanadians (and -Americans) over the span of 150 years. Although the comic-book format makes some serious moments darkly funny, one reads with horror about atrocities once commonplace in our backyard. Did you know that Chinese hop farmers were slaughtered in their tents in Issaquah? Or that, also in 1885, Tacoma’s Chinatown was burned to the ground by racists, giving the name “Tacoma Method” to similar scare tactics across the nation? These often-untold tales add gravity to an already somber account inspired by the Vancouver, B.C., author’s own family history.

The Shock of the Old

Igor Stravinsky’s score for Le Sacre du Printemps has been raising eyebrows since it premiered 100 years ago, with a performance that ended in a riot. Since then, it’s been a challenge for choreo-graphers and audiences—an artist needs real guts to take it on. Montreal-based Compagnie Marie Chouinard has plenty of daring, and choreographer Chouinard’s eclectic movement style—combining high-intensity modern dance with experimental theatrics— launches her Rite of Spring directly into the middle of the controversy. The UW Symphony Orchestra will perform the score, as part of the on-campus Rite of Spring Centennial Celebration, which includes other dance performances, lectures, and presentations. Also on the bill tonight is Chouinard’s hyperkinetic 24 Preludes by Chopin, accompanied by local pianist Brooks Tran.

Wild Style

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is usually in the news for all the wrong reasons, with civil war and Hutu/Tutsi conflict nearing two decades and five million dead. Then there’s the Sapeurs subculture of Brazzaville, dating to the ’60s, which you never read about. Its name is derived from the acronym SAPE—the Société des ambianceurs et des personnes élégantes.

(Roughly translated: the Society of Party Revelers and Elegant Persons.) Photographing these dandy Sapeurs since the mid-’90s is Baudouin Mouanda, who’ll attend the opening of his first U.S. show. Trained in Kinshasa and Paris, Mouanda is very much a street photographer, a fashionista in the tradition of Bill Cunningham who seeks out beauty, frivolity, and excess. His frames explode with giddy, defiant finery—

Burning With Experience

Marcos and Rubina Carmona have been performing in Seattle and elsewhere as Carmona Flamenco for almost 40 years, in an art form that showcases experience. They’ve done big theater gigs, but lately they’ve been concentrating on their cabaret show, an intimate performance that springs from the early roots of flamenco. Rubina, who began as a dancer, has matured into an astonishing singer; she hosts a core group including Marcos on the guitar and their son David Carmona on percussion. Ana Montes, in her prime as a dancer, will tonight join this family show, concentrating the energy that would fill a 1,000-seat house into a space smaller than your living room. Coastal Disturbances

A port city with a long history of Asian immigration, Seattle is the perfect setting for New York novelist Julie Otsuka to talk about the illegal World War II internment of JapaneseAmericans (the subject of her 2002 novel When the Emperor Was Divine). And you couldn’t ask for a better stage interlocutor than novelist Jamie Ford, whose father wore an “I Am Chinese” button here during his ’40s childhood—to avoid being confused with despised Japanese-Americans. (This was the subject of Ford’s 2009 novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, set in the ID, where he grew up; today he lives in Montana.) Ford, whose great-grandfather changed the family surname from Chung, and Otsuka will tonight discuss immigration, assimilation, and Otsuka’s most recent novel, 2011’s The Buddha in the Attic, about mail-order Japanese brides in the early 20th century. Whether of Chinese or Japanese ancestry, families up and down the West Coast have long been rocked by waves from across the Pacific, their loyalty and patriotism called into question. there’s no miserablism here. His subjects are proud peacocks, like the zoot-suited throngs of postwar L.A. or the Mods of ’60s London, who strut in the public square in wild hues and giddy patterns. There are no drab military uniforms or reminders of the carnage upriver; these are the garments of aspiration, joy, and the rejection of violence. For the Children’s Film Festival (now in its eighth year), parents always need to consider how old their kids need to be for a given movie. Opening the fest, the animated French Zarafa is subtitled—meaning second-grade reading skills are required.

Then there’s the Bambi-like death of an animal mother and the subjects of colonialism and slavery in the Sudan, circa 1827. NWFF recommends 8 as the minimum age, but I’d qualify that as a very mature, non-squirmy 8 for this 78-minute adventure. In other words, Zarafa requires some patience. Fleeing from slavers, little Maki befriends an orphaned giraffe meant to be an Arab gift to King Charles X of France, where long-lashed Zarafa ends up as a popular zoo attraction.

(That last bit is actually true.) This entails a balloon ride over the Mediterranean, a comely pirate queen, a crash in the snowy, wolf-infested Alps, then a long stay in Paris— lovingly rendered by Jean-Christophe Lie, one of the animators behind 2003’s The Triplets of Belleville. Maki’s comic-historical journey borrows bits from Tintin and Victor Hugo; and if, after the movie, your kids ask about slavery and the ethics of animal captivity, it’ll have some educational benefit, too.

plotting to steal a rare coin—on the Rep’s mainstage rather than in the smaller Leo K. Theatre yields an Alice in Wonderland effect.

Eugene Lee’s towering set turns Donny’s resale shop into a multilevel warehouse of categories of stuff (e.g., a chain gang of floor lamps). It’s more like a confiscation depot than the dumpy junk shop traditionally depicted.

Against these epic surroundings, director Wilson Milam and his actors make unconventional character choices. Charles Leggett, sporting a ducktail as Donny, flattens his speech, measuring it out punctiliously in a way that estranges him from us and from his old buddy Teach—Hans Altwies, who rules the stage every moment he’s on it. He’s wonderfully entertaining, though his bizarre, laser-precise Saturday Night Fever moves and hair-trigger reactions render him a showman/clown. But by far the weirdest choice is to have Zachary Simonson play Donny’s assistant Bobby with Asperger’s. The literal-minded youngster of the trio, Bobby is the script’s mechanism for sympathy, a well-meaning waif. Trussed by Deb Trout in a leather jacket so small as to resemble a bolero, Simonson’s body seems shriveled into an S shape, as though permanently absorbing a blow. His words emerge in a monotone so irritating that one dreads his appearances, which was surely not Mamet’s intent; worse, it undercuts the power of the ending.

Staged in this existentially cavernous wasteland, this is not typically juicy Mamet.

When you’re mounting a show as widely seen and enjoyed as this one, it’s challenging to keep it surprising. This production certainly does that. MARGARET FRIEDMAN

players? There’s a slammin’ band of rockers roaring through Balagan’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, led by local drag luminary Jerick Hoffer. His Hedwig comes off as an effortless extension of himself—the glam-meets-punk equivalent of the Slim Shady/Eminem split personalities. Hoffer stomps, romps, and shreds his elastic vocal

If evangelicals can hate the sin but not the sinner, is it cool to hate the play but love the

cords as the role requires, but just as Hedwig herself is missing something essential at her core, so is this glimpse into transgenderism.

There’s no one with whom to empathize.

Unlike the musical it most closely resembles, The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig is neither funny nor whimsical. But because it’s outrageous and in-your-face, it’s become a cult phenomenon since John Cameron Mitchell originated the 1998 show.

Hedwig’s tale of woe is also the source of her liberation, literally and figuratively, from the yoke of masculinity and her roots in East Germany. After agreeing to part with his genitalia (in an operation that left him/her with that “angry inch”), Hansel becomes Hedwig and moves to the states, where she is soon jettisoned by the American G.I. who talked her into the whole misbegotten affair. In her despair, Hedwig falls in with a pimply kid (future rock star Tommy Gnosis, heard only in sound clips), and with him creates songs that launch his superstardom. Gnosis dumps Hedwig, leaving her to play in seafood restaurants.

Hedwig is backed by a ferocious live band (the encore included celebratory covers by Bowie and The Sweet). But, outside of Erin Stewart’s star turn as Hedwig’s singing parter, Eastern-bloc Axl Rose look-alike Yitzhak, there are no other characters of substance.

And as it becomes clear that Yitzhak is Hedwig’s current husband and onstage doormat, it’s obvious that Hedwig regards herself as the only marquee name in her universe.

This Hedwig is a blast-furnace punk-rock extravaganza with all the technical elements stitched together to rough-hewn perfection by music supervisor David Russell and director Ian Bell. Go expecting searing performances from the unforgettable Hoffer and crew, and you’ll leave elated. Go hoping for anything else, and you’ll be checking your watch. THE MOUSETRAP The first rule of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is: You do not talk about The Mousetrap.

So successful has been this rule that the whodunit has run continually in London since its 1953 premiere. This adorable production, wittily directed by Jeff Steizer, offers further insight into its record-breaking longevity. Five guests arrive at Monkswell Manor during a snowstorm, joining the inn’s owners, Mollie and Giles (Hanna Lass and Richard Sloniker), on Jason Phillips’ atmospheric neo-Tudor parlor set. Amid jockeying for rooms and spots by the fire, the inn’s population dwindles, and a clever inspector (Jared Michael Brown) arrives on skis to investigate possible connections to a recent murder in the

• ANDY WARHOL’S FLOWERS FOR TACOMA When

the Tacoma Dome opened in 1982, the city’s 1 percent for art program allocated $280,000 to decorate the arena. A panel was established, including local citizen advisors and three national experts; it solicited five proposals, Andy Warhol the boldface name among the finalists. What he proposed was to drape a giant orange daisy over the top of the roof. It was based on a prior appropriated image and a history of silk-screened flowers dating to 1964. TAM’s exhibit is actually a survey from Warhol’s commercial art in the ’50s to his final few flower sketches in the ’80s. Warhol returned to flowers several times during his long career, helpfully detailed in a timeline by TAM curator Rock Hushka.

The pricey dome pitches so angered the public that the city council repealed the measure in 1985. (When tempers cooled, the council reinstated it in 2000.) And here’s a final irony: The panel and city council rejected Warhol in favor of Stephen Antonakos, a New Yorker whose neon waves—originally to be affixed to the roof—were then installed inside the dome, out of public view . . . unless you’re a Justin Bieber fan. The theme for this year’s BAM Biennial is “High Fiber Diet,” meaning all manner of yarn, fabrics, upholstery, embroidery, and sewing. And ammunition? My favorite piece here—among 44 by Northwest artists—wouldn’t look out of place in an armory. A wall display of bright-red shotgun shells, Howard Barlow’s Once in a Blue Moon is intended as a celebratory (now) and memorial (later) salute to his wife, fellow artist Lorraine Barlow. (Her sewn funeral shroud, called Final Embrace, rests just below.)

The piece is more than a little morbid.

Inside each shell—1,000 in all—are cut-up scraps of Lorraine’s wedding dress. But a select number are instead loaded with her post-mortem wishes (these number 21, as in a 21-gun salute); still others contain Howard’s future memories of his wife. The whole project is proleptic: envisioning the end long before its arrival, considering marriage from both a past and present perspective (it’s a contract that binds beyond the grave). and Anne’s dilemma with dispassionate, clinical observation. The camera seldom moves. There are few close-ups. Amour often plays like a Frederick Wiseman documentary.

But is this a near-documentary you want to see? Well, how old and healthy are you? I found Amour to be less emotional and excruciating than expected, yet I learned precisely nothing from it. For me, owing to direct personal experience, the movie has nothing new to say. As depicted—and Haneke is being quite realistic here—aging is more brutal than all the violence in Django Unchained. If you’re younger, if your parents are healthy, you may be startled by Georges and Anne’s decisions about life and death. But they’re realists. “It will go steadily downhill, and then it’s over,” their daughter is told. And she must absorb that fact: Life itself is cruel. There is no consolation, only an end. Hollywood generally treats aging as an ennobling process, a time of gauzy reflection or an opportunity to transmit sage wisdom to towheaded grandkids. Beyond Cocoon or On Golden Pond, what the movies really like to do is use geezers for flashbacks: One minute you’re Wilford Brimley, lulled into a summer dream on the front-porch rocker, then you’re Ryan Gosling, storming the beaches at Normandy.

This is not a view shared by Austrian director Michael Haneke. From Funny Games to The Piano Teacher to Caché, he has specialized in an impeccably crafted cinema of cruelty, repressed passion, and dread. Secrets will out, violent urges find expression, and sexual impulses can never be denied. There is nothing reassuring about his movies; they are specifically made to unsettle. Although Amour topped many critics’ 10-best lists last year, it was—for family reasons—the #1 entry on my “I do not want to see this” list for 2012. And yet it’s not so awful and dispiriting as I’d imagined. Its progression is nothing if not logical and familiar: the medical crisis, doctors, the daughter’s visit, nurses, rehab, moments of resiliency and love, the “Never take me back to the hospital” demand, setbacks, adult diapers, despair.

That’s the way the end-of-life process works. I’ve been there, I know. And Haneke knows too. He renders Georges

willingness even to do a little slapstick. Here, playing an uptight gallery owner whose unmarried partnership is unraveling, she dances with strippers, blithely breaks glassware, and sleeps with a boorish contractor (Benoît Poelvoorde) who walks her into one drunken scene like a wheelbarrow—Huppert hooting with delight, marching on her hands, as if she’s 7 years old.

Her old boyfriend (André Dusollier) is seriously old, while Agathe still has some life in her. (They have a teen son between them, who’s BFFs with the contractor’s son.) Then, to Agathe’s shock, white-haired publisher François takes up with a younger woman! François moves out, virile Patrick moves in, and everyone is quite civil about the coupling and uncoupling. (Only in France, right?) My Worst Nightmare is equally a sex comedy and a class comedy, as the hautbourgeois Agathe and François both discover the earthy pleasures of drunken hookups and lowered standards. Given the huge success of The Intouchables, “loosen up” would appear to be the new national motto of France—or of French film comedies, at least. If Huppert continues to have this much fun onscreen, dour old Haneke may never hire her again. And that might be a good thing for them both. BRIAN MILLER

This doc is Wagner for Dummies, and I mean that in the best sense: I can’t imagine a more engaging basic introduction to the composer whose work still fills opera houses and starts arguments around the globe, 200 years (as of this May 22) after his birth. If you wonder why Wagner’s operas have been a cornerstone of Seattle Opera’s repertory, and why his music inspires such fanatical devotion, both positive and negative, British actor/raconteur Stephen Fry may offer some insight as he travels Europe exploring his fascination with the composer.

Fry starts in Bayreuth, where Wagner, not content to merely dash off scores and hand them over to others to stage, built an opera house to his own specifications: “Stratford-upon-Avon, Mecca, and Graceland all rolled into one,” Fry calls it, which gives you an idea of the level of unabashed hagiography we’re dealing with.

From Switzerland to St. Petersburg to Nuremberg to England he goes, outlining Wagner’s life, dropping in on rehearsals, and discussing the music’s hold on him—a fraught question, considering Fry himself is Jewish and lost relatives to the Holocaust, and Wagner was a virulent anti-Semite and the Third Reich practically built its entire aesthetic identity around him. (Nuremberg is the site, not by coincidence, both of Hitler’s most infamous mass rallies and of Wagner’s most fervently patriotic opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.)

At last Fry talks with cellist Anita LaskerWallfisch, whose musical skill saved her life when she was assigned to play in the Auschwitz camp orchestra. Despite this searing experience, which spiritually broke many musicians, Lasker-Wallfisch claims that “music is not sullied for me.” Her unsentimental rationale for refusing to banish this most politically tainted of composers from her life: “How much do we grant the Germans in their quest of destroying everything?” GAVIN BORCHERT E film@seattleweekly.com

As always, wife and young mother, Anna (Keira Knightley) falls madly for a Russian officer, Vronsky (powder-puffed Aaron Taylor-Johnson). The first of this match’s tragic consequences is Vronsky’s jilting of Princess Kitty (Alicia Vikander) who, in the B story, is courted by the surly, shy, and awkward Levin (Domhnall Gleeson). Knightley’s emotions come through with a gasping immediacy, and Jude Law deserves special notice as Anna’s cuckolded husband.

Determined to smuggle the houseguests out of Iran by disguising them as a film crew on a location scout, CIA exfiltration expert Tony Mendez (Affleck) enlists the help of John Chambers (John Goodman), a movie makeup artist, and Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin), an old-school producer. Affleck’s movie is a love letter from Affleck to the industry that made him, shunned him, and loves nothing more than to be loved. Russell’s previous movie, you’d be left with a close, fractious family like the Solitanos of his hugely appealing new Silver Linings Playbook. Instead of Boston Irish and boxing, we have Philadelphia Italian and the Eagles. The family patriarch (a fine, restrained Robert De Niro) is an OCD bookie bound by strange rituals to the team; his wide-eyed wife (Jacki Weaver) is the nervous family conciliator/enabler; and their volatile son Pat (Bradley Cooper, wired) is fresh out of the nuthouse with a restraining order from his ex. But Pat claims he’s a new—and newly positive—man. He’s looking for those silver linings through self-improvement: reading, running, losing weight, scheming to win back his wife. Is another explosion near? Russell keeps the film constantly off-balance, but his pell-mell approach suits the story of Pat’s mania and wrong-footed romance with young widow Tiffany. In that role, Jennifer Lawrence is a revelation: tough, proud, and even more titanic in her instability than Pat. Silver Linings is one of the year’s best films, and Lawrence a deserving Oscar nominee.

The Spice Is White

The truth about why Korean chefs are leery of setting Caucasians’ tongues on fire.

akji bokkeum, the classic Korean octopus dish that’s a stated specialty of Shoreline’s SanMaRu Grill, is typically roughed up with a jab/cross/hook of chili-based heat. Most preparations call for pan-frying the chewy tentacle segments with red chili-pepper paste, red chili-pepper flakes, and fresh red chili peppers, which collude to make your nostrils quiver. But the forlorn nakji bokkeum with noodles on our table was a weak shadow of what the menu promised: Its crimson sauce was so intensely sugared that the dish tasted eerily like what Olive Garden would serve in never-ending portions.

“I don’t know what’s in it,” our server confessed when we asked him whether the chef had unconventionally added tomatoes to the stir-fry. “I told him not to make it spicy.”

When we protested that we’d ordered the nakji bokkeum precisely because it was spicy, he demurred, “Americans don’t like it.” Only after he’d extracted a guarantee that we wouldn’t hold him responsible if we saw stars and sweated through our socks did he consent to ask the chef to remake what was left of our dish. He returned minutes later

with the thickly sauced noodles, shrunken from another run through the frying pan,

tweaked to “three-star heat.” According to our server, that’s the default setting for

Korean customers. (Although neither the menu nor the server initially alluded to a spice scale, receipts showed that every dish served to us palefaces featured one-star heat.)

The revised dish was spicier, but still a far cry from spicy: My grandmother, who made a mean chicken croquette, would have called it “highly seasoned.” The modest addition of red chili-pepper paste, the gochujang that’s crucial to Korean cookery, blotted out the strange Italian-American flavors that clung to the first onion-laden serving, but its influence ended there. We asked whether we might upgrade to five-star heat, a request that clearly unsettled our server: He delivered the now-microscopic dish along with a pitcher of ice water and three blue plastic glasses. The chilis were finally vivid, and pleasantly so.

The nakji bokkeum incident wasn’t the first evidence of SanMaRu’s bowdlerizing instincts. I’d previously popped into the restaurant, which recently underwent its second ownership change in three years, for a warming bowl of sundubu, the traditional

“We’re always trying to make adjustments,” he says, attributing the impulse to the country’s long history of poverty. “We’ve been at the bottom once, and we want to get out of there.”

Gold gets around the problem by showing up at restaurants until servers relent. “They either get used to me or give me the real stuff to get rid of me,” he says.

But he’s also made peace with Korean restaurant owners’ reluctance to challenge American palates. “The problem is that it comes out of hospitality—the desire to give you what they really think you’d like,” he says. “It took me a while to figure that one out.”

hen diners stray beyond their native cuisines, they attribute their adventures to curiosity. They want to understand people halfway around the world by learning how and what they eat.

But sometimes the real lesson lies in the dishes they can’t get.

If an American eater says he’s a sophisticated food lover, he expects to be served the fertilized duck embryos he’s craving.

Anything less strikes him as an unforgivable breach of contract. But Koreans have a different perspective: They hail from a country where until recently “ethnic homogeneity” was a national point of pride. They’re culturally disinclined to interpret food preferences on an individual basis. Many Korean restaurant owners firmly believe all Americans don’t like spice and funk, so they try to protect us from it. That authentic kindness reveals more about the Korean people than a pound of gochujang. E

The spaghetti with briny cured tuna heart, crushed Calabrian chiles, olive oil and parsley leaves evokes the feverish, lascivious spring that many chefs forsake in favor of celebrating the season’s tender greens. The pasta preparations change daily, so check Easton’s blog for a running roster. $ PALOMINO EURO BISTRO 1420 Fifth Ave. Ste 350, 623-1300. Located on the top floor of City Center, Palomino is a stylish restaurant that attracts droves of 20 and 30-somethings, especially at the end of the work day. It serves standard midscale American fare (pasta, seafood, steak) that’s decent but forgettable.

However, the happy hour (4–6 p.m. and 9 p.m.–close, daily) is an absolute steal, featuring brick-oven pizzas, appetizers like calamari and mussels, house wines, and specialty cocktails. As a friend put it, this is the place you take your date when you’re having an affair: quiet to the point of being clandestine, with fabulous, romantic views to the west, north, and east from downtown. The Watering Hole: The Augustus, 3601 Fremont Ave. N., 547-5103, FREMONT The Atmosphere: There aren’t many respectable places in Fremont for the 30-andover crowd to settle in for a cocktail. The Augustus, however, is a happy exception. On a recent Sunday, Pappy, the owner’s large, docile dog, roams the room. He fits nicely with the space’s mellow vibe.

Booths and high tables hug the interior wall, a few stools line the front window, and a small seating area is arranged in the back of the room. A tarnished copper bar counter is one of the few elements carried over from the previous tenant, The Rogue & Peasant. The bottle collection on the back of the bar is being built slowly and methodically, with common favorites already in stock.

The Barkeep: On a recent weekend afternoon, co-owner and veteran mixologist Robb Sheldon is working the bar. Sheldon has completed stints at Grey and Liberty, and before opening The Augustus, he spent two years revamping Whisky Bar. He founded The Augustus with his wife Sarah and the owners of neighboring restaurant Hunger. Sheldon favors drinks “with a nod to the masters” that are prepared with no more than three or four ingredients. “I try to leave herbs for the kitchen to use, except mint,” he says.

Since the start of the year, Seattle restaurants have organized a pair of benefits for uninsured employees stricken by serious health issues, following in the footsteps of MurrayAid, which has thus far raised $212,000 for legendary local barman Murray Stenson’s pulmonary care.

Yet despite patrons’ generosity, fundraising hasn’t been a permanent endeavor for Seattle’s eating-anddrinking houses.

The cafe at FareStart, the culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged men and women, is the closest thing in Seattle to a charitable restaurant, a concept that’s rapidly gaining traction across the country. But, unlike FareStart, the new crop of charitable restaurants functions exactly like standard restaurants, except that their proceeds are divvied up among community organizations.

“Cause doesn’t shout to make itself heard,” The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema wrote in his recent review of D.C.’s 3-month-old “philanthropub.” “The only pitch you get from your server is

for a drink or some food, and it might not be until the end of a meal that you realize all your chewing and sipping are for good causes.”

At Cause, diners are asked to check off their choice of four charities when they pay their bills.

After the restaurant pays its expenses and salaries, all profits are donated in proportions dictated by customer vote. Although Sietsema, who awarded Cause two stars and plenty of chicken-wing praise, says it’s too soon to know how much money the restaurant will raise, its founders are aiming for $80,000 to $100,000 in the first 12 months.

In Houston, meanwhile, the Organized Kollaborative on Restaurant Affairs (OKRA), an alliance of communityminded restaurant owners, last year opened its Charity Saloon, which directs 100 percent of its profits to charity. Here, guests receive one voting token with each drink, and the charity which receives the most votes at the end of the month is the beneficiary of the bar’s donation. The White House in Austin, a collection of food trucks assembled around a dive bar, uses a similar system to determine the recipients of its funds.

“I believe, or want to believe, that there are some great intentions here,” says restaurateur John Howie when asked whether a charitable restaurant could fly in Seattle. Howie is deeply involved in a number of philanthropic causes, including a Thanksgiving dinner for the needy at which he feeds 500

people, an annual event since 2003; the recent second annual Stone Soup for Kick Hunger Chowder Challenge; and a cocktail benefit for breast cancer in October.

Yet Howie’s skeptical of the business models behind charitable restaurants, wondering how they’d respond to a drop-off in customer traffic.

“My biggest question is: ‘Is this a sustainable concept over the long haul?’,” he wonders aloud.

Pointing out that he and Tom Douglas have long supported charitable organizations without attaching the “charitable” label to any of their restaurants, Howie suggests that restaurant owners are better positioned to serve their communities when they’re not locked into a donation structure. “Then again, maybe bringing it out into the open, as these restaurants are doing, will empower more people to do more,” he adds. “We can only hope.

“With our community being as progressive and as philanthropic as it is, I would suspect that you may see something like this in Seattle in the near future,” Howie continues. “Again, though I question the sustainability of these concepts, I don’t see any harm in them.” E hraskin@seattleweekly.com

Pies like the REM (with pesto, portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, caramelized onion, goat cheese, and mozzarella) and the Eartha Kitt are nicely in theme with the music venue. Though the bands can be hit or miss, fresh, artisanal ingredients like Laura Chenel Goat Cheese and Zoe’s meats make them reliably tasty. $$ TAWON THAI 3410 Fremont Ave. N., 633-4545. Thai restaurants in Fremont are almost as common as 2-year-olds in Columbia City. Tawon Thai looks as pleasantly appointed as its competitors, but the kitchen doesn’t sugar up its curries as much as the others do or lighten up the fish sauce and lime on its salads. The cooks also diverge a bit further afield from the standards. If you’ve eaten a hundred different pad see euws in your life, try the kow soi, curried noodles laced with pickled cabbage; if you’re dead bored with spring rolls, order the miang kam, and fill raw spinach leaves with delicate pinches of dried shrimp, coconut, lime, peanuts, and onions.

Gorelick praises Skerik as being “very funky,” but wasn’t familiar with the Dead Kenny Gs until he was asked about them for this article. He says the name doesn’t bother him at all. “People can do what they want with that kind of sarcasm. It doesn’t bother me,” Gorelick says. “I know what I do and I know what kind of musician I am and how hard I practice.”

s polar-opposite as their sounds are—Kenny G’s Velveeta-smooth, Skerik’s often almost impossible to trace back to a musical instrument—the two players, strikingly, share a dedication to constant improvement and a refusal to rest on their laurels. “I practice my saxophone every day for three hours because I’m just an animal about being the best, the best that I can be,” Gorelick says.

“I’m proud that when I stand up onstage and play that I have 30- to 40,000 practice hours underneath my belt.”

Skerik says that when he’s on the road, he often looks for teachers in cities he’s visiting. “Every town has a badass,” he says. “Omaha, Nebraska; Ames, Iowa—there’s always some badass there. If I have a day off or something, I look for ‘Who’s a good teacher in this town?’ The more ideas, the more input you can get—it can only help.”

As for the coming year, Skerik plans to dedicate much of his energy toward promoting Live at the Royal Room, his latest

record with yet another ensemble, Skerik’s Bandalabra. Gorelick will appear in a commercial, which he is contractually obligated to stay mum about, and continues to look for new avenues and collaborations to expose listeners to his music. “As you know,” Gorelick says, “the radio stations are not playing music like they used to 10 years ago.”

Come to think of it, dealing with a lack of airplay—even from KEXP, which Skerik calls a “three-chord ghetto”—is another thing the odd couple have in common.

in the posh Point Dume neighborhood of Malibu, Calif., while Skerik lives in the working-class Top Hat enclave in White Center. Skerik’s recent collaborators include colleagues on the hippiefriendly Jam Cruise; Gorelick has recently worked with Foster the People and Katy Perry, and last year provided the music for “Love on Ice” alongside Gladys Knight at Kent’s ShoWare Center.

Gorelick’s instrument of choice is the skinny soprano sax, while Skerik favors the lower-voiced tenor. Gorelick’s music defines the smooth-jazz genre—even if that’s not a term he uses himself, preferring to call himself a “saxophone player trying to become a better saxophone player”—and Skerik named his band the Dead Kenny Gs to take aim not at Gorelick, but rather at the incessant pigeonholing he’s faced as an instrumentalist.

“There’s definitely no resentment,” Skerik says. “I don’t know him personally. We use his name to symbolize smooth jazz.

Smooth jazz, if you’re an instrumental musician, is such a clear target. Every fucking few years it’s just some new, lame categorization to just bring instrumental music down.”

Skerik says the band name was pitched to him by a friend.

Scared that someone else would get to it first, he formed the band the next day. “Wouldn’t you start a band if somebody gave

hen Kenny Gorelick was a teenager in the early ’70s, he took saxophone lessons from a man named Johnnie Jessen in a sparsely decorated room across from the downtown Seattle Nordstrom’s.

“His whole philosophy was tone,” Gorelick says. “He was a great guy to be around. He taught me to care about the instrument and practice.”

Gorelick studied with Jessen for about a year. “After that, I didn’t feel like there was anything more he was going to teach me,” he says, “other than what I needed to do, which was go home and practice.”

By the time Eric Walton started lessons with Jessen a few years later, the room was still bare, but for a picture of Gorelick on the wall. He too remembers Jessen focusing on tone and preaching the virtues of blowing long, whole notes into the saxophone. “It’s one of the best things you can do on the saxophone,” Walton says.

“It actually helps you play faster. It has an odd way of affecting other seemingly unrelated [things].” Like Gorelick, Walton studied with Jessen for about a year, then moved on.

Today, both men are world-renowned saxophone giants. After his year with Jessen, Kenny Gorelick became Kenny G, the bestselling instrumental artist of all time. Walton, one of the freakiest, most versatile players in the game, rose to prominence with his band Critters Buggin and performs as Skerik with many bands.

One of them, the Dead Kenny Gs, released an EP last year entitled Gorelick.

Aside from their common teacher, similarities are scarce.

Skerik is the recently married father of a teenage daughter, Gorelick the recently divorced father of a teenage son. Gorelick lives

arrett Croxon started writing songs on his guitar back around 2006, but first played them onstage less than a month ago. In the interim, Croxon, 27, has served as the drummer for a number of local acts—Little Penguins, Tea Cozies, C’est la Mort, a brief stint with Fleet Foxes.

“I was busy enough to the point that I didn’t really think about it. But over the years, I kind of got tired of playing drums, so I thought I’d do something else,” Croxon says over a bottle of Negra Modelo at the

Saint on Capitol Hill. He’s bundled up in a black beanie and a matching black scarf; also around his neck is a chain with two charms: a gun and Saint Christopher, the patron saint of protection. “I grew up Catholic, so I think it’s kind of funny,” he says.

Croxon’s solo recordings started out as sparse folk melodies, but, he says, “I got kind of carried away, and just started recording more and more stuff, to the point where I realized, ‘If I’m going to perform this live, I need a band.’ ” Last summer he assembled two more guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer, who now make up Midnight Blooms (originally called Midnight Veils, they recently changed their name at the request of the Seattle psychedelic outfit Midday Veil) and who are seated around him at the Saint.

Chad Cassady is a voluble, long-haired former Tacoman who answered a Craigslist ad that sought a “guitarist who just wants to fucking play.” Stephen Robert is a muscly folk singer and the editor of the Capitol Hill Times. Andrew Gaskin and Will Hallauer were poached from Erik Blood’s band. Hallauer isn’t here tonight—there’s speculation that he skipped band practice last night to go see Lady Gaga at the Tacoma Dome with his wife—but Gaskin is; he and Croxon have been friends since they went to the same middle school in Everett.

Midnight Blooms’ ambrosial sound, flush with looping layers of guitar and Croxon’s smooth vocals. “It’s not predictable,” says Robert. “It’s like the same parts recycled, but in different ways. There’s a little more disjointedness to it.” I mention that one of their songs, a pretty, pensive track called “Carousel,” reminds me very much of the music of Red House Painters, the melancholy San Francisco group fronted by sadcore saint Mark Kozelek. Croxon nods and does a slow-motion fist pump: “Yeah, they’re pretty much the band that got me playing guitar.”

Midnight Blooms have almost nine complete songs; they’d like to have an EP completed by summer. There’s an open niche for a band like theirs in Seattle, where the current rages are for hyperactive punk, dance-ready synth-pop, and country-fried folk. The Good Wives Last month, on his 28th birthday, Jake Bruggman, frontman of the local folk-rock band The Good Wives, was diagnosed with stage IIIB Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Bruggman has already begun the debilitating process of treatment, and while he is fortunate to have health insurance, he’ll have a sizable deductible to pay; he won’t be strong enough to work for at least the next six months; and he has to move out of his shared housing into an apartment by himself to sustain the spotlessly clean living environment his immune system now demands. A prolific off-the-top lyricist, the dexterous Aceyalone helped build the most prolific open-mike rap workshop on earth, Project Blowed, into a legitimate movement that in the ’90s turned the Project’s South Central L.A. Good Life Cafe into a traditionalist rap mecca of sorts. As an artist, his smooth positivity flows like water over beatnik jazz and soul instrumentals, whether on a solo classic like All Balls Don’t Bounce, any of his rap-poetry work with Haiku D’Etat, or select winners from his RJD2-produced Magnificent City. His pro-love community ethos has helped create a healthy alternative to the violence-fetishizing gangster sect that has defined Cali rap for so long. Suffice to say, tonight should be all love. It’s been 12 years since Hamilton Leithauser and co. formed the Walkmen in Washington, D.C. (their Facebook history timeline hilariously commemorates such moments as “A bill arrives from London, England, in the amount of 1000 British Pounds–owed for having 2000 copies of our first record ‘Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone’ destroyed.”), and they’ve never sounded better. The band’s fifth and sixth albums, 2008’s You & Me and 2010’s Lisbon, resonated with a deep, sentimental sense of drama, and their latest, last year’s Phil Ek–produced Heaven, went further by introducing a new, resplendent, even relaxed glow to their sound. “Stick with me/Oh, you’re my best friend/All of my life/You’ve always been,” Leithauser tenderly sings on the title track, sounding like a far cry from the guy who snarled “You’ve got a nerve to be asking a favor” on the band’s aggressive 2004 breakout track “The Rat.” Tonight’s show will be opened by the far-from-mellowed-out Father John Misty (who’ll also headline the same venue on Jan. 29). Why, in a world filled with turkey basters and professional semen wranglers, would you opt for the old-fashioned approach? Obviously this guy has grown attached, and that’s why everything turned to shit.

Think about it. He’s been happily boning dudes for however many years, and now he’s trying it with a girl— and I’m guessing he’s appalled to find out that he actually likes it. Most of us aren’t 100 percent gay or straight (check out that famous Kinsey scale), and he likes you enough to be best friends with you, but now he discovers he actually likes schtupping you too? Confusion! It’s like how the biggest homophobes are often the biggest closet cases. What they can’t accept makes them angry. It’s a dude thing.

And because he can’t cop to his feelings for you, he’s resorted to slut-shaming, which is just silly. It’s not as if you’re smoking crack, just a little pole. Regardless, bringing a baby into this mix sounds like a really bad idea. Unless he can simmer down and lighten up, it may be time to abort this mission. E

Dear Dategirl, I am a 41-year-old woman and have been trying to get pregnant with my gay best friend. I’ve always thought it would be a great idea to raise offspring with someone with whom I am not romantically involved, as (I rationalized) the stability of the child’s home life would not be contingent on the stability of a romantic relationship.

However, now I think I may be completely fucking wrong!

Several issues have come up recently, but the main one is this: I also happen to have an out-of-town male lover, which seriously pisses off my gay maybe-baby daddy. I’ve confirmed with doctors that as long as we are safe, there’s no medical reason not to. In fact, anything that relaxes me is good for potential conception (this other man is not a daddy candidate for various reasons).

None of this matters to my friend, who says it’s a deal-breaker if I keep sleeping with this guy. He swears he’s not jealous, but that it is just “wrong,” and shows that I’m not being serious about our “project.” I’ve encouraged him to sleep with other people, but he insists on remaining celibate except for our sessions (yes, we’re trying the old-fashioned way, which I think contributes to the problem).
