Stand-up comedy comes to Enumclaw Expo Center

any Washington TV aficionados have fond memories of the 1980s and ‘90s. New York and Los Angeles may have had Saturday Night Live and the rest of prime time, respectively, but Seattle had “Almost Live!,” a locally produced sketch show that proved nationally influential, launching the careers of

entertainers such as Joel McHale and Bill Nye the Science Guy. On Saturday Dec. 22, the Enumclaw Expo Center will host a stand-up comedy show featuring two “Almost Live!” alumni: Brooks McBeth and John Keister.

Keister, of course, was the host of “Almost Live!” from the 1988 season onward. But the Enumclaw show is a special homecoming for McBeth,

The criminal trial for accused Enumclaw pastor Malcolm John Fraser has again been delayed.

COMEDY FROM 1 whose stand-up act was recently featured on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

McBeth is a Renton native, but his family ties through his mother, a schoolteacher, run deep in Enumclaw.

“Most of my family … is from Enumclaw and still lives here,” McBeth said. “I spent my childhood here.

So it’s exciting to be able to perform here.”

He’s an alumnus of Lindbergh High School and Green River Community College, who broke into television as an intern for “Almost Live!” During his early tenure, he managed to grab air time as “Intern Brooks.” One particularly self-deprecating early sketch, “A Special Offer From Brooks McBeth,” saw “Intern Brooks” offer, unsuccessfully, to solve

McBeth earned his way into the show’s writer’s room and cast, appearing in recurring sketches such as “Jus’ Pimpin’” alongside McHale.

After the cancellation of “Almost Live!” in 1999, McBeth was flown to New York to audition for “Saturday Night Live” to no avail. He decided it was time to move to Los Angeles, home to the majority of television’s writing and performing jobs. There, he earned his way onto the writing staffs of “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn,” then “Trigger Happy TV,” a oneseason U.S. adaptation of the British hidden camera show.

on the FOX-aired sketch series “MADtv,” where he stayed on for two seasons. “(It was) a place a thousand times more chaotic and a little more stressful than ‘Almost Live’,” he said.

“These guys are incredibly talented.”

Working from a competitive writer’s room he was able to bring 15 of his sketches to air. Some of his work includes “Suge Knight’s Court-Ordered Holiday Album,” and the Special Patrick sketch “Special Olympics.”

“It’s great writing for shows,” McBeth said. “At the same time, the work you put out changes as it

www.courierherald.com passes through different writers hands. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen.”

He began performing stand up to find another outlet for writing and performing. Unlike television, stand up provided a direct connection between comic and audience, something that appealed to McBeth.

He went through the typical pitfalls and rites of passage of breaking into stand-up comedy, a disastrous first set included. He went out on the road with other comedians, opened for headliners and built up his own material.

“What’s funny is when I open for Joel McHale, or Jack Black, or whoever, the audience will get a little annoyed that there’s a comedian before the comedian they came to see,” McBeth said. “But I like that. I like the challenge of winning them over.”

While he’s not afraid to confront a particularly aggressive heckler, McBeth said he believes most heck-

lers heckle because they genuinely want to be a part of the show and don’t know proper show etiquette; in their case, a Katt Williamsstyle direct retaliation doesn’t help the comedian’s cause.

“It depends on whether the heckler is coming from a real negative place, or just had too much to drink,” he said. “If I have to go after somebody, I will, but if 300 is the average number of people I have at one of my shows, there are 299 people who want to have a tremendous night. When I break it like that to confront one person, it can make the night less fun for the other 299.”

His format helps. McBeth eschews much of the standard comedian-talkingto-audience for a show he estimates is 40 percent rehearsed material, 60 percent participatory “town hall.” He will invite questions from the audience, touch on locally important events; the goal is to snow-

ball starting points into an improvised stream-of-consciousness.

“Each show is tailor made for each show’s audience,” he said. “For Enumclaw, I’m going to do a slideshow, I’m going to talk about my childhood in the area, and I’m going to tell stories about what it was like.”

“Comedy in the CLAW!” will begin at 8 p.m. Dec. 22.

Money was taken but no one was hurt the evening of Dec. 11 when a lone gunman robbed the Stop N Shop convenience store.

The business is at the intersection of state Route 169 and Southeast 416th Street, just north of the Enumclaw city limits.

According to information provided by Sgt. Cindi West, public information officer for the King County Sheriff’s Department, a single suspect walked into the store at about 8 p.m. Brandishing a handgun, he demanded money from the cash register and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The Enumclaw Police Department was the first agency to respond and an EPD spokesman confirmed that one shot was fired during the incident.

County authorities called for a K-9 unit to help with the search, but the suspect was not apprehended.

West described the suspect as a white male, possibly in his mid-30s, of average height and above-average weight. He carried a black backpack and was wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt and light-blue jeans, with a black ski mask covering his face.

Buckley burglary A Buckley business owner is hoping police apprehend the crook who broke into her salon, trashed the place and made off with $600 and miscellaneous merchandise.

For the past seven years, Vikki Cowden has owned and operated Shear Magic on Main Street. It’s a familiar stop for regulars, having operated for 15 years as Ladies and Loggers before Cowden took over.

When an employee arrived at work the owning of Dec. 13, she noticed windows were open. When she saw broken glass, she called the police.

Cowden said she has heard of other businesses being targeted and hopes everyone will take precautions.

Under cover of darkness, someone broke the window of a rear door at her business, reached through and gained entry to the building at 912 E. Main.

Aside from cash, the burglars took products, an air compressor and other “really stupid things,” Cowden said. The intruders paused to eat some fruit roll-ups and, not content to simply steal, the intruders also vandalized the interior.

Cowden remains hopeful that police can nab the culprits, but realizes the odds aren’t in her favor. Neighboring businesses were closed or vacant and Buckley City Hall — directly across the street — wasn’t open when the crime occurred.

“Nobody saw or heard a thing,” Cowden learned.

Individual Achievement Program • Each year, the Enumclaw School District offers the opportunity for students in kindergarten through fourth grade to take the qualifying assessment for placement into the Individual Achievement Program for highly capable students.

This year’s test for students in second through fourth grades will be from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 9 at Southwood Elementary School. Kindergarten and first-grade assessment will take place during regular school days in April, at each student’s school site.

Testing days for each school for kindergarten and first graders will be communicated as needed with families who have signed their kindergarten or firstgraders up for testing, once those dates have been determined.

Those interested in having their child assessed for the Individual Achievement Program can now register at the office of their child’s school.

The deadline for signing up all students will be Jan. 25. Parents, teachers, or community members may recommend students for testing.

The newest delay stemmed from a request

by Fraser’s legal counsel.

According to spokesman Ian Goodhew of the King County Prosecutor’s Office, Fraser’s attorney filed a motion “to have the computers of the Enumclaw Police Department forensically examined for emails potentially relevant to the case.”

Superior Court Judge Beth Andrus ruled that the request be acted upon by Jan. 4 and set the new trial date.

Fraser was arrested by Enumclaw police March 20 of this year. According to charging papers, he is alleged to have had repeated sexual contacts with a girl

during 2005 and 2006.

A “probable cause” statement issued by the Enumclaw Police Department said the issue was first brought to police attention March 12, when the EPD received a report from Child Protective Services. According to the police document, CPS said a youngster “had been molested by the assistant pastor of a local church during the time frame of 2005 to 2006.”

The victim alleges Fraser visited her room more than 20 times, after midnight, and touched her in an inappropriate manner. Fraser “would cover her mouth so she would keep quiet and not yell,” according to the report.

The victim said she attempted to fight, but Fraser would threaten to hurt the child or her mother. The victim said Fraser informed her she would go to hell if she told anyone what was occurring.

POLICE BLOTTER HOME BURGLARY: Police took a report Dec. 15 of a burglary committed at a vacant home on Sun Mountain Drive. The victim was to provide a list of missing items.

ROBBERY?: A call was transferred from King County Nov. 15 from someone claiming to be a victim of a “strong-arm robbery” in which a purse was taken while the victim walked to a mailbox. An officer arrived and found no one home at the stated address. No further action was taken due to a lack of information.

FIGHT IN PROGRESS: Officers arrived at 11:30 p.m. to a Railroad Street address and the report of a fight in progress. Contact was made and all involved declined to press charges.

WELFARE CHECK: Police received a request Dec. 14 to check on the welfare of children at a Jewell Street address. Officers found multiple issues to deal with, including an intervention, a pending divorce and alternate placement of children.

SUICIDAL: Police and medical personnel responded at 1:43 a.m. Dec. 13 to an address on 264th Avenue Southeast, where a person had taken an unknown quantity of pills.

The subject was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital on an involuntary commitment.

FRAUD REPORT: Police took a report Dec. 13 from a citizen whose daughter had been the victim of a financial scam. The victim had cashed a fraudulent check she received in the mail, then purchased money orders and sent them as directed.

KNOWN SUSPECT: An officer responded to a Roosevelt Avenue address the afternoon of Dec. 10, following a report of property being stolen. An officer filed a report and attempted to contact a named suspect. The suspect’s girlfriend said she would make sure the missing item was returned.

DRINK DRIVER: Police were notified at 3 p.m. Dec. 10 of a motorist who was swerving into oncoming traffic in the vicinity of state Route 410 and Warner Avenue. An officer located the vehicle and made an arrest for driving under the influence. The vehicle was impounded.

DOMESTIC: Police responded at 7:30 p.m. Dec 9 to a Grand Fir Drive residence and a report of a domestic dispute involving an intoxicated man who was refusing to leave.

He departed shortly before police arrived and could not be located. The woman involved in the dispute was advised to call police again should the man return. A second call came less than an hour later, with the victim stating the man had assaulted her and left the house on foot. He was found nearby and taken into custody for fourth-degree assault.

TWO CHARGES: A traffic stop at 1:30 a.m. Dec. 9 resulted in the driver arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

The vehicle was impounded.

FELONY WARRANT: A woman arrived at the police station lobby the afternoon of Dec. 9, asking to speak with an officer. It was determined she was wanted on a King County arrest warrant and was turned over to county authorities.

He was born Dec. 2, 1965, in Provo, Utah, and had lived in this area 30

Deck the halls with airborne flu germs, hack-hack-hackhack-cough, hack-hack-hack-phlegm.

Contrary to this column’s title, I did not have the fortune and foresight to ask Santa for protection against any of the three flus making the rounds this year. As I write this almost a week after the fact, I’m still trying to cough out the little elf in my throat.

In defense of walking bags of disease everywhere, sometimes it’s hard to tell when you’re under the weather. I mean, I know it’s unlikely that you can get black lung from a clean, air-conditioned office — some might even throw out five-dollar words like “imposDaniel Nash sible” — but who can Staff Writer really say?

(Editor’s note: Doctors. The answer is doctors.)

Hourly workers who don’t have the benefit of sick time or a flexible schedule can feel — and usually are — obliged to tough it out to keep the rent paid and the heater running. I’m lucky enough to have both those benefits, but I remember when I didn’t and it’s not fun.

Other times the pressure is psychological. Probably most people have had at least one boss who believed “quarantine” was French for “slacker nonsense” and preferred the extraclean countertop gleam that could only come from a layer of virus-rich sweat.

Here are some of my sick day tips: 1. Bad movies. I’m not talking about actual bad-bad movies, like “Act of Valor” (I realize I’m probably alone in that opinion, so feel free to write hate mail to the address at the bottom of this page). You’re not trying to make yourself more sick. I’m talking about guilty pleasures like “Resident Evil,” “Sleepaway Camp,” “Death Wish” or the lesser Bond flicks.

2. Busy hands. It’s not a good idea to push yourself when you have the flu, but you can’t sit and watch the tube the entire time you’re out of commission. A minor engaging activity will stave off mental sluggishness, which I find contributes the lion’s share to cabin fever.

3. Feed yourself. This sounds like a no-brainer, but cooking — and the resulting dishes — is the last thing you want to deal with when you’re sick. Sometimes it just seems easier to skip a meal. That’s a mistake.

4. While you’re at it, drink your water. Another seeming no-brainer that’s easy to forget.

5. Comic books! I don’t know about you, but my concentration suffers when I’m down for the count. It’s the perfect time to read, but reading becomes more difficult, a literal headache over an extended period of time. Most pharmacy drug stores carry “Spider-Man,” “Archie” or “MAD Magazine.”

You know, if you’re not a complete dork like me and keep a box full of picture books in your home.

I would like to put in my two cents. You know when you are driving down the road and see a dead animal? And for whatever reason, you have to look at it? I get the same thing when I read Mr. Elfers’ articles each week. I don’t care much for his topics of discussion. But I have to read it.

I never cared much about politics until President Obama was elected.

It’s not about “right-wing, left-wing, conservative, liberal”….it’s about one thing. Right and wrong. We are in a world today where doing wrong things are considered fine.

I am saddened by the thought of the next generation not being taught honor and integrity. For example, is it right or wrong to spend more than you make — blow a bunch of money you don’t have and not be able to pay your high debt? Or is it OK these days to do whatever feels good at the time? What about lying?

My parents taught me from as early as I can remember that lying, no matter how big or small was bad.

That’s something naughty you just don’t do. Sure, it’s easier to fib. When you’re caught in a situation, you want to cover it up.

What about those government “leaders” who lied over and over, right to your face about the Benghazi attack? And that’s cool? To lie to us Americans? I guess it’s OK now to not tell the truth. If our president lies and gets away with it what is

that teaching us? Our kids? Piece by piece, our country is slowly being taken away. And people don’t realize this or even see it coming. That is the difference between the Dems and Reps. I know what’s coming and it scares me.

I do my “homework.” I disagree with living in the past. I’m looking into the future and these shady government leaders that “we the people” elected — well, get ready for ugly because it’s on the way.

Rich Elfers also says that “pride and arrogance defeated the Republicans in 2012”. Really? No. It was partly the extremely one-sided media (pretend Romney was the president and he lied right out of his teeth about Benghazi. The one-sided media would have been all over that like flies on you-know-what). Part of it

Presidents used media wisely A major reason President Obama won the elections of 2008 and 2012 was because he and his advisers harnessed the power of the data-mining capacities of the computer and the mass appeal of the Internet. Obama for America polled, communicated with, organized and milked supporters for donations more effectively than any other candidate in American history.

If we look at our national past, we see three other presidents who used the media of their day to sway public opinion to change the nation.

The first president to use the media to serve his purposes was Teddy Roosevelt. His term of office began

with the death of President William McKinley to an assassin’s bullet in 1901. McKinley, by example, taught Roosevelt what not to do in dealing with the press.

Back in the 1890s before Roosevelt became president, two New York newspaper publishers, William

Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, had national inf luence because of the size of their publications and the use of paid reporters.

Other newspapers throughout the country used the New York World and the Morning Journal as sources for their stories.

The publishers competed with each other and used sensationalized news accounts to stir up public sentiment against the Spanish who were trying to put down an insurrection in their Cuban colony. The writing style of Pulitzer and Hearst became know as yellow journalism.

Teddy Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the Navy at the time, observed this new media power and decided to use it to his advantage when he became president.

Teddy was masterful in using newspapers to shape public opinion. T.R. was able to bring an end to unhealthy corporate meatpacking practices in companies like Armour and Company. He did this by publicly supporting and advertising the socialist journalist Upton Sinclair’s book “The Jungle.”

People were shocked at Sinclair’s stories about how rats, rat dung and rat poison all ended up in their breakfast sausage. So many Americans quit eating meat as a result that it was the meatpacking industry itself that lobbied Congress to pass meat inspection laws to regain public trust.

media of his era, the radio, to gather support for his New Deal programs during the Great Depression of the 1930s. FDR’s radio “Fireside Chats” allowed him to use his powerful and engaging personality to bring about major changes to the government. That same personality came through to harness the nation’s support for U.S. involvement in World War II. President Ronald Reagan, a former actor, knew well how to harness the power of the next media, television, to bring about conservative changes to the nation in the 1980s. Reagan’s engaging personality and story-telling gift drew both Democrats and Republicans to his point of view to change the direction of the nation yet again.

As demonstrated by these four presidents, using emerging media to shape public opinion is very powerful.

President Obama used electronic social media to win re-election, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to use it to bring about the changes he wants in the nation. Time will tell whether he will be able to harness support or whether social media will turn around and crush its most effective proponent.

Looking back upon I was 7 or 8 years the Christmases I’ve old. That Christmas known, a few stand Eve, I was so flushed out prominently with excitement and from all the rest. FITNESS FROM 8 more important than reaching some short-term goal, New Year’s resolutions will become a thing of the past.

Question: I’d love to run a 5K with some friends this spring, but I am not active at all right now. How should I go about training for something like this?

Answer: This is a great question!

There are actually several plans on the Internet that can take you from the couch to the 5K course in as little as eight to 10 weeks. In fact, you can even use one of these plans if you have no intention of running a 5K, but simply want to start incorporating fitness (running) into your lifestyle.

Most of the plans start with combination walk/jog/walk session, three days per week, steadily increasing the actual jog time from just two or three minutes to about 10 minutes by weeks four or five.

At this point, you also start to add an extra day of training, totaling

four sessions each week. As you continue to increase your jog time, you gradually remove the walking warm-up, thereby finishing each workout with just a basic walking cool-down.

By the time you get to 10 weeks, you should be able to run consistently for 25 to 30 minutes without stopping.

Question: I’m looking to add some serious muscle mass and I’m curious about the engineered weight gainers out on the market? In other words, do you think weight gainers should be used to gain weight?

Answer: Weight gainer supplements can have a place when it comes to adding muscle, but here’s my general philosophy on the matter. First of all, we know calories are of prime importance if gaining weight is the goal. We also know that some people simply can’t eat enough to gain the type of weight

that they’d like. This means liquid calories become pretty important because liquids obviously aren’t quite as filling as solid foods. But my personal preference would be to create my own weight gainer smoothies with real foods like fruits, yogurt, protein powders, oats, milk and even things like peanut butter, frozen yogurt and a little bit of chocolate. Then, you can combine these “beverages” with some hearty meals and you’ll be on your way to a bigger you in no time. If you’ve found a particular weight gainer supplement that you happen to like and you can afford it, then you can certainly go that route, too. I just happen to be a “food first” kind of guy and I’ve always found my smoothies and shakes more palatable than what is on the market. In the end, do what you think is best and don’t forget to train for weight gain as well.

Hoe, hoe hoe – a Merry Christmas to all This year marks The the 30th anniversary of writing this Compleat weekly column.

Home That’s more than Gardener 1,500 columns, most inspired by readers Marianne Binetti who once mailed in Columnist questions but now use email to ask for answers to a multitude of gardening questions.

One Christmas, years ago and home with small children, I penned this poem as a tribute to Santa at Christmas. It still remains my most requested reprint. So thanks to the garden clubs, nurseries and green thumb friends who pass it on year after year, and the newspapers that continue to print a local garden column. As is my tradition, anyone can reprint this column without my permission or copywrite restriction. You can also go to my website at www. binettigarden.com to download an email or printable version of the gardener’s take on Christmas: ’was the week before Christmas, and all through the yard, not a gift was given, not even a card.

The tools were all hung in the carport with care, with hopes that St. Nicholas soon would repair, The shovel with blade all rusty and cracked, the pitchfork still shiny, but handle it lacked.

When out on my lawn, (it’s brown and abused) I could see poor old Santa, looking confused.

No list had been left for Santa to see, no gardening gifts were under the tree.

But wait there’s still time, it’s not Christmas yet, and gardening gifts are the quickest to get.

You can forget the silk tie, the fluffy new sweater, give something to make the garden grow better.

If she wants a gift shiny, then don’t be a fool, it’s not a dumb diamond, but a sparkling new tool.

If fragrance is listed you can forget French perfume, it’s a pile of manure that’ll make gardeners swoon.

Give night crawlers, not nightgowns, the type of hose that gives water.

(Anything for the kitchen is not worth the bother.)

At the time, I was living in a gated community with a backyard pool, where I’d often swim on weekends and occasionally take a quick dip before going to work.

Somehow, swimming on Christmas seemed blasphemous. Thereafter, I made a solemn oath never to spend another Christmas in warm climates.

Which accounts for my ex and I spending the next Christmas in New York City. To actually stroll through the colorful decorations and the traditional music that surround the ice rink and line the corridor toward St. Patrick Cathedral is truly a wonderful and mind-boggling experience.

Closer to home, there was my first Christmas in a downtown Seattle hotel. Joyce and I had spent the afternoon shopping and the evening strolling through the twinkling lights along Firth Avenue, snacking on roasted chestnuts and enjoying a splendid dinner between drinks in any number of cozy, little clubs. Then, instead of disrupting our tranquil mood by driving home, we simply crashed in the Mayflower.

If you can afford the tariff in these lean financial times, such an excursion is highly recommended.

Lo and behold, old St. Nick had already come and gone, leaving his bountiful wonders behind! Gee whiz, Dad, didn’t you see him?

“Well, not exactly,” he explained. “But I thought I heard something in the living room.”

After an awesome surprise like that, there was no going back to bed. So I experienced the splendid excitement of Christmas morning on Christmas Eve with both my parents.

But that was nothing compared to the first Christmas I spent with my ex-wife’s family. Admittedly, it was a large family and my ex seemed intent on buying presents, however small, inexpensive or silly, for everyone.

Consequently, she and her mother ended up with an entire guest bedroom in the family home filled with gifts. I’d never seen so many presents outside of Macy’s and I found myself wondering what kind of moneyed, materialistic windfall I’d stumbled into.

Carli Capponi

Carli Capponi of Enumclaw passed away on December 9, 2012 in Yakima, WA. She was born Carlesta Tost in Cumberland, WA on November 1, 1916, the 15th of 17 children to John and Mary Tost. Her father and mother moved to Enumclaw shortly thereafter and were farmers in the Krain area of Enumclaw. At the age of 16, Mom left the family farm and moved to Seattle where she worked as a nanny and housekeeper for well to do families in that area.

Mom always said she would never marry a farmer and would not live on a farm again. However a young man named Jack Capponi, from a neighboring farm in Enumclaw, kept making trips to Seattle to win her heart. In May 1940 they were married and she moved with Dad to the Capponi family farm in Krain. They had three sons; Jim, Dennis and Michael. They operated a dairy farm and a milk and freight hauling business. With the help of her boys, mom milked the cows and ran the dairy while dad ran the trucking business. In 1959, when Jim left to attend WSU, the cows were sold and mom “retired”.

Retirement was not for mom so she maintained a large garden, took painting classes and was on a bowling team along with dad. When Dad finally sold the trucking business, they purchased a travel trailer and a small boat so they could go fishing with friends. They even made one trip to Yellowstone National Park with Jim and his family. Mom loved to travel and in 1990, after much talking dad agreed to go on an ocean cruise to the Caribbean with Jim and his wife. Mom and Dad loved the trip and in later years took two more ocean cruises to Alaska with friends. Dad passed away on December 6, 1998.

Mom decided she did not want to live on the farm any longer and moved into an assisted living facility in Enumclaw. In 2005 Mom moved to an assisted living facility in Yakima to be near to Jim and his wife.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents John and Mary Tost, sisters, Tony, Francis, Mary, Polly, Josie, Ann, Betty, Jennie, Nellie, Minnie and Alice, brothers, John Jr., Charley, Jack, Louis and George. She is survived by her sons Jim (Doreen) of Yakima, Dennis (Judy) of Elma, Michael (Willie) of San Jose, CA., eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services were held December 17th at the Enumclaw Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.

Enumclaw grad graces Mist roster An arts student with an eye for fashion, Melissa Bernasconi knows a certain look can bring beauty and style.

But looks can be deceiving, especially when you strap on a helmet, don shoulder pads, apply eye black and carry an attitude.

The Enumclaw woman — who studies fashion marketing at The Art Institute of Seattle — moonlights as a gritty, secondyear running back and safety for the Lingerie Football League’s Kent-based Seattle Mist.

Tackle football is rugged business, but something the 23-year-old Bernasconi embraces. For Bernasconi, it’s a blend of action, impact and grace — a some-

times savage game in which art is put in motion.

“I love it. It’s insane,” said Bernasconi, an Enumclaw High graduate who played fastpitch on scholarship at Green River Community College. “When you get on the field, it is all emotion, adrenaline. It happens so fast and it’s so much fun. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Jingle Bell Run! PE Teacher, Jill Carlson, had many students who qualified to participate in the second annual Jingle Bell Run! In order to qualify, students must have completed four running cards.

Each of the cards represents 25 laps and the laps are run during lunch recess.

On December 6th, the following students from Southwood Elementary were treated to a special pizza lunch in the Running Club Café and then donned those jingle bells and holiday hats for their fun run around the school!

The following article was in this month’s statewide WASA (Washington Association of School Administrators) Hotline publication. We appreciate Rachelle Underwood sharing with us so we can share with you! We hope you can join us on our next bus tour!

As I was ushered through the hallways and classrooms of Franklin Pierce and Enumclaw School Districts during their Focus on Education bus tours, I was amazed at how much school has changed. And…how much it has stayed the same. Many individuals who joined me on these tours would likely say the same— particularly a retired gentleman who, 30 years prior, was the principal of Enumclaw High School.

From higher education partners to public officials (currently serving or running for election), Washington State PTA members, retired educators, and business owners, both Franklin Pierce and Enumclaw hosted diverse groups of individuals with differing views of public education. Many were not aware of the severity of budget cuts to education, our victory in the McCleary ruling, or the importance of technology in the classroom.

In Enumclaw, many tour guests were excited to see children engaged after witnessing firsthand the power of the Promethean Board.

From what could have been a difficult math lesson for students, guests saw the effectiveness and visual appeal of applying technology to classroom curriculum. Guests were also impressed with Enumclaw’s CTE program, including a very successful and savvy student-led coffee stand called “Buzzy’s.”

At Franklin Pierce, tour guests validated the importance of group learning, leadership, and accountability. In one science class at Ford Middle School, students worked as a group to complete an in-class assignment, then reported to their peers on what they learned. Students later rated themselves on their quality of work and explained the reasoning for their self-score.

Having one of the highest poverty rates in the area, guests were surprised to hear Franklin Pierce has outperformed their demographic and made significant gains in reading, writing, and math.

No matter how much curriculum and teaching has changed over the years, some things remain the same: students eager to learn and the perseverance of school administrators and teachers who strive to give every child an opportunity to learn.

Focus on Education provides a way for our communities to see schools in action—but more important—community members see the kinds of opportunities available to a public education student. Focus on Education is an effective tool that influences our communities for the better. Knowledge is power, and this event greatly improves public perception about K–12 education in Washington State.

Congratulations to Frank Hewins, Michael Nelson, and all other superintendents and their staff for a job well done for this year’s Focus on Education!

There’s no letting up for the girls of the Enumclaw High gymnastics program.

Still riding high from last season’s state title, the team has opened the 2012-13 season with a pair of convincing performances.

The latest came Dec., 12,

when the EHS crew hosted a four-team meet at Peak Gymnastics. Enumclaw totaled 165.4 team points to race past Auburn High, which finished with 147.25.

Sumner was third with 140.8 and Bonney Lake trailed with 125.45.

The White River High girls placed third and the Hornet boys were sixth during the two-day Hammerhead Invitational wrestling tournament.

The tourney was contested Friday and Saturday at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion in Bremerton.

The White River girls were led by Sam Mitchell

and Dylan Fagan, both fighting their way to the championship round.

Once in the finale, Mitchell took a 5-2 decision to claim the crown at 190 pounds, while Fagan was pinned to claim second place at 170.

“You don’t always get the calls, that’s the nature of the sport,” coach Rich Valdez said.

Adding to the Hornet girls total, Hannah Lewandowski pinned three opponents on the way to a third-place finish at 235 pounds, Jamie Meagher won the Sportsmanship Award and placed fifth at 155. Kendra Blue, Morgan Shirey and McKinsie Shirey also finished fifth.

The Hornet boys saw two grapplers make their way to the finals. Brandon Short made the most of his opportunity at 152 pounds, earning a hardfought decision to take the tourney title, while Cody Schwab lost by decision to take second at 120.

Trevor Kurtz also was a major contributor, winning his consolation bout at 138 pounds to place third.

The Enumclaw and Sumner girls squared off Saturday on the Enumclaw basketball court with EHS winning 40-30.

Both teams made solid runs with Sumner taking the first quarter 11-7 and Enumclaw showing its strength in the second, scoring 21 points to Sumner’s seven.

The Hornets’ outside shooting came to life in the second frame, which put the Hornets up for the remainder of the game.

Calli Remitz was the leading scorer for

the Hornets with nine, followed by Katie Holland with seven.

Enumclaw took a 28-18 advantage into halftime.

In the fourth, Enumclaw played well in the paint and pressured the ball defensively, holding Sumner to four points while the Hornets hit seven.

Enumclaw travelled to Auburn Mountainview Tuesday and hosts Lakes 7 p.m. Thursday. Both are South Puget Sound League 3A games.

Slow down and celebrate the future coming of Christ because it is the norm in our sociChurch ety. I would suggest Corner that it is worthy of celebration because it is a day on which Mike Iversen the fabric of the Rainier Hills Young Life universe was forever changed. As we move ever closer to the celebration of the birth of Christ, let us consider what this feeling of anticipation and eager expectance is all about.

First, we are waiting to celebrate the

birth of Christ, the coming of the savior of the world. This appearance of Jesus has already come and we are remembering that some 2,000 years ago God became man and was born into a life like you and I. His coming had been anticipated for hundreds of years and even though we only await its celebration for a few weeks, we are able to consider the gravity of Jesus being “God with us.” God himself entered the world in a specific time and space in order to set us free.

Second, as we prepare for our celebration on this very special Tuesday, we consider

the coming of Christ now to each and every one of us, personally. The coming of the baby on Christmas was both the fulfillment of centuries of anticipation and the beginning of a new story, spanning millennia. And this story includes you and I, as we come to Christ in the here and now, so he comes to us, promising a full and abundant life. And his grace and mercy are so great that he shows his love for us even when we don’t show it back.

By Britt Nelson Director, Plateau Outreach Ministries One of our regular visitors, a homeless man, came in last week not feeling well. He was not his usual self. We had him sit down, gave him something warm to drink, and had him rest a bit. Soon he was lying on the bench, saying “something doesn’t feel right.” As we sat with him and asked more about how he was feeling, we determined it was better to get him to a doctor than risk sending him back to his tent.

Because the number of staff and volunteers are limited at any one time, this situation presented a challenge in transporting this client.

We experienced that wonderful timing we often see around here.

Pastor Dan just happened to come in on one of his usual visits to check in. He always greets us with kindness and always asks “How are you all doing today?” When Pastor Dan asks how you are doing, he really wants to know. His concern for our wellbeing as caregivers is genuine. This day he also asked, “Is there something I can do?”

Thankfully Pastor Dan was able to give our client a ride to the hospital.

Early this year, a man came in needing assistance. We helped him with food, propane and worked with him on some steps he needed to take to help himself. We saw him every few days while he was trying to get back on his feet. His past included drugs, alcohol and some violence. We were able to help him here in our office, but the day he needed a ride to his home just out of town, we needed help. Again, a community pastor happened to be at POM for a meeting. He offered to give this young man a ride. It was a good opportunity for this client to share his story again, and the pastor provided additional emotional support at a critical time in this man’s life.

Plateau Outreach Ministries was founded by and continues to be supported by the churches of the Plateau Ministerial Association.

As we care for our neighbors in need, these churches and pastors care for us. Our work is often difficult, emotionally challenging, and always pulls at your heart.

Our ability to greet clients with compassion and understanding, even on the hardest days, is fueled by the prayers we receive from the churches, congregations and pastors of our community. Each Wednesday before opening our doors for food bank, we receive a blessing for our staff and volunteers who serve and for each person who enters our door needing help. This week it was cold outside, and clients were already in the door before we had opened. Our circle expanded to include not only pastors, volunteers and staff, but clients and a few donors who also happened in at that moment. This time together gives us strength and hope. While the shelves often run low, we have never run out.

We are called to care for each other and we are thankful to be here to assist our neighbors. We are thankful for the support we receive from the community’s pastors, churches and everyone throughout the community that keeps us in their thoughts and prayers. Volunteering Can Be Easy and Rewarding For many of us, December is a month when our thoughts and concerns for the less fortunate in our communities really come to the forefront. This is no doubt due in part to the holidays we celebrate and due in part to the seasonal weather. Cold, wet and windy days remind us how tough life can sometimes be. For an organization like Food Lifeline, the less fortunate are always at the forefront of their thoughts and efforts. Each year in November and December QFC is proud to support Food Lifeline in the Puget Sound area and the Oregon Food Bank in Oregon with a twomonth campaign to collect both food and cash for these organizations. Our campaign is called Bringing Hope To the Table. The food and money that is accumulated helps sustain these organizations and their clients for months after the holidays are over.

QFC is also proud to be a year ‘round partner with these organizations in providing wholesome food through the Grocery Rescue Program. Food that no longer meets our standards for quality and

freshness, but that is still wholesome and healthful is donated and used to feed hungry people through the great work of these organizations. Much of the great work that Food Lifeline does would not be possible without the assistance of a large group of volunteers.

Nora Peters, a Grocery Rescue Program Representative at Food Lifeline notes, “All non-profits agree that volunteers who give their skills and time are a precious resource and are really the backbone of our operations. This is even more true at Food Lifeline where every year over 9,000 volunteers help us sort and repack food donations, help with administrative tasks in our office, and with food and fund drives. These volunteers are the equivalent of 20 full-time employees!”

Many volunteers return often to help Food Lifeline, but the door is always open for people who want to donate even just a few hours of their time. As the Food Lifeline website notes, “Businesses, schools, social clubs, faith-based groups, service
