City officials: Building, development pick up By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

Things are starting to stir in Auburn’s building and development sector. For one thing, the number of single-

family resident permits issued in 2012 was the highest it has been in years, according to Kevin Snyder, planning and development director. “As we come to the end of 2012, we’re fast approaching 406 new

single-family home building permits issued, which is our best year since 2004,” Snyder said. “And although there are a lot of external factors that we cannot control that may upend what I’m about to say, from all our

Local animal shelter begins to take shape By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

There are the usual loose ends to tie up at the new Auburn Valley Humane Society Animal shelter on A Street Southeast a week before its Jan. 1 opening, desks to be moved, banks of cages waiting to be fit together. And as yet, the barkers and mewoers and kibble munchers for which the place has been built are elsewhere. In the midst of it all is shelter director Kelley Durham, orchestrating an army of volunteers pouring in to put everything together and ticking off the points of an

ichael Hursh is advisor to the mayor. Don’t turn, though, his title could change. It’s happened before. An average of once a year since the City of Auburn hired him in January 2007.

“I’ve had five titles and six offices,” Hursh said. Perhaps there’s an acknowledgement among all those titles and offices that thinking up one job description for a guy who seems to be everywhere, doing everything human-services related is no stroll in the park. “I have a few roles that are complementary to my work at City Hall, within

the context of my desire to serve Auburn,” Hursh said. Indeed, those “few roles”, which see him providing for and ministering to residents on behalf of the mayor, encompass all the areas that affect the daily lives of the city’s residents. extensive check list of must-dos. It will be, Durham said, a fullyequipped, up-to-date shelter, thanks in overwhelming part to the generosity of the community, which has taken the shelter into its arms and supported it in 10,000 ways great and small. “The community has just been unbelievable,” Durham said. “I would say 99 percent of what you see as you walk around has been donated by the community.” First up, the check-in and check-out area, dominated by a reception desk [ more SHELTER page 3 ]

Comedic taste of ‘Almost Live’ comes to the Auburn Ave Theater By SHAWN SKAGER sskager@auburn-reporter.com

Big-time comedy comes to the Auburn Ave Theater on Friday with Brooks McBeth and John Keister taking the stage for a one-two punch. The show reunites some of the comedians who were part of the Northwest’s own iconic television sketch comedy show, “Almost Live”,

which ran from 1984-99. “It’s super enjoyable to come back (to the Northwest),” said McBeth, a Green River Community College graduate who lives in the Los Angeles area. “I’m always thrilled by the fact that I know all the quirky details of the Northwest and can make fun of them.” According to McBeth, the tone of Friday’s show is similar [ more COMEDY page 6 ]
