Wedge neighborhood apartment fire causes $75K in damage

Posted online Fri., Dec. 7 City Council to discuss human services program funding, MLK development planning Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to discuss funding recommendations for human services programs through the City of Tacoma's community services fund. The city has appropriated funding according to the strategic priorities identified in the City's 2010-2014 Human Services Strategic Plan. During a study session Tuesday, staff will provide information on the 2013 and 2014 external funding recommendations for human services, community mobilization and economic development. A public hearing on the issues is scheduled for later that day at City Hall. In addition, Tacoma Community and Economic Development Department staff will provide an update on the MLK Subarea Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Project. The City is in the process of issuing the first formal draft of the Subarea Plan and associated draft EIS for community review and input. An open house was held on Dec. 5. Councilmembers will not take public comment during this week's study session, which will be held on Tues., Dec. 11 at 12 p.m. in Room 16 of Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St. Audio from the meeting will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and online at tvtacoma.com. Washington State ranks number one in the nation for broadband adoption, network speeds and economic structure according to a study released this week by TechNet, a network of CEOs and senior executives that promote the growth of technology-led innovation. "The state's ranking reflects state broadband planning going back to 2008 and more than $2.3 billion in public and private investment in infrastructure and training during that period," said Will Saunders, program and policy director for the Washington State Broadband Office. "The study also confirms that we are ideally positioned for economic growth based on this

The state's index rating is based on measures that "promote economic development, build strong communities, improve delivery of government services and upgrade educational programs," according to the study's lead researcher, John B. Horrigan. Horrigan helped write the National Broadband Plan and was a researcher for the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Posted online Fri., Dec. 7 Photo Courtesy Tacoma Fire Department Tacoma fire fighters responded early Friday morning to a report of a house fire in the 1600 block of Division Avenue in Tacoma. According to Tacoma Fire spokesperson Joe Meinecke, crews arrived to find a first floor apartment fully charged with smoke and fire. Crews worked swiftly to attack the fire that had burned through the floor into the basement of the building, ventilate the smoke from the area, and alert and evacuate occupants in neighboring units. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and there were no injuries to report. The vacant apartment was under remodel and the cause of the fire was determined to be spontaneous combustion of oily rags left in a metal can.
